Interesting and fun read with kids. Good facts about racing and driving. Good illistrations. Would recommend this book.
On Amazon this book is recommended for toddlers, but it seems too advanced in my opinion. The illustrations are suitable, but the text is not. However, a five-year-old who is heavily into cars will definitely enjoy this, as it contains a lot of information about training to be a race car driver. It includes the flags that are waved during the race, the job of the mechanics in the pit and the effort required before a race to learn the course and be fully prepared. It even mentions eating well and being physically fit, definitely something to aspire to.
My grandson thoroughly enjoyed this book. His dad works in NASCAR an this was a fun read for us.
I knew I didn't know a lot about race cars, but I had no idea how much I didn't know. I do know a lot of kids who will absolutely love this book. Some of the older kids will be checking this out to read to younger brothers and sisters simply so that they can read it themselves. I really like that the book is illustrated with very young children instead of adults. Lots of kids dream of driving race cars, and the illustrations will make the story more relatable for them.
An ideal reading material for the not very bookish dreamers of the grandstand! The book explains what it needs to become a Formula 1 race car driver. It is loaded with information and color. The informative text would have been a bit more simple to match with the illustrations but could overcome that hurdle with guided reading. It`s clear and vibrant illustrations would make it a favorite book for many little races, who`d go back to this again again.
The book touches all related topics from auto tracks, race cars to Formula drivers through a drivers preparation for the race and finally through a race to the finish. An engaging and satisfying read-aloud for little races to snuggle-up with their dads, obviously there will be a lot of questions to be prepared for and certainly some patience needed. The exciting subject matter of the book is also a great way to teach kids about the rewards of hard work and dedication. Sure to be a hit among the younger readers!
This book was sooo cute! So loaded with info on becoming a formula one race car driver. Some little child who loves cars, and racing, is going to love this book! Love the illustrations, too!
This delightful little book will surely be a hit with younger kids. With simple terms and language the author describes what it takes to be a successful Formula 1 race car driver, a race that is very well-known all around the world.
The author describes how a driver prepares for a race with the proper fireproof gear to wear (even his underwear), how he painstakingly studies the circuit and finally she describes the big race day itself. Slegers depicts an exciting event drawing crowds in the thousands that ends up with the winner of the race receiving a well-earned huge trophy and joining in on a happy celebration party that rewards all his team's efforts and very hard work. Well done everyone!
Kids will learn new vocabulary from the more advanced words introduced to the reader which is always a good thing. The technicalities of a race that the author has included will draw kids into the story and the fun, child-like illustrations that are vibrantly coloured and full of action drive her message home. What is that message? It is that being a race car driver is challenging and very hard work. The euphoric feeling that successful drivers experience as the black and white checkered flag waves in the breeze pumps them up to do it all over again in the next up-coming race. Race on..............
Right at the beginning I have a small quibble with the author, who as a European claims F1 has the most famous races; she’s apparently never heard of the Indianapolis 500. Not that I think the kiddies reading this will care, but if this is how sloppy the research is. . .
Thankfully she does get most of the stuff right, though on the list of flags she forgot the white. The writing is typically simplistic, as it should be, although I wonder if kids of the age this is intended for know what a mechanic or gas is. “Tune the motor?” Hope mom or dad are prepared to answer that question.
Colorful illustrations, facts presented in a a clear, east-to-understand manner, and cars--three things that will engage a child. Even this grownup learned something about how a race car driver prepares for a race and what happens during it. The book could have included a caveat about safety and the danger of fast driving outside of a specially designed track (and even inside one).
This is a fun book with some bright, clear and sharp images. It might be a little bit too technical in places though for the lower range for the age group its aimed at (such as the detail about the different colour flags used), but slightly older children will love it!
I am a little confused about the audience for this little book. The text explains about being a race car driver with language and vocabulary that seems to be geared to children 5 and up, yet the illustrations are very young and more geared to toddlers. There is some good information in the book and it finishes with a young boy in a pretend car practising to be a race car driver which is a nice touch. Would be a good addition to a unit on transportation as well as jobs people could have.
Not everyone can be a race car driver. It takes time and dedication to the sport. But with practice, maybe you can come out ahead of the race.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
Liesbet Slegers has done it again. I normally read these in Dutch, but I couldn't resist it when I spotted this one on Netgalley. I just had to read it. :) Racing, cars, fun illustrations!
The book is all about racing, mostly about Formula One. I don't really have much with the Formula One, or at least the races (too boring + too much noise, even on tv), I just love the cars and love seeing new cars pop up in the world with each new race. Plus I love finding out more about how the races work, and what is happening during a race. Most of the things in this book weren't new to me, though I did learn that the drivers have a straw inside of their helmet to allow them to drink!
I like how the book was at first a bit of a manual on what Formula One is, but then moves on to training, exercises, various days of the Formula One. Like on day 2 there is a time trial. The next day is the race.
The text is all easy and well-written. I am sure kids will love this book. Not only does it have fun information about races/Formula One, but it also has cute illustrations that show various things from races/Formula One!
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. If you like Formula One/racing be sure to check this one out.
