The second book in Islington's Licanius Trilogy - it's a good continuation of the story begun in THE SHADOW OF WHAT WAS LOST, and I think fans of that first book will find plenty in here to like and keep them engaged.

However, I'm not sure if the series is quite for me. Unfortunately, I can't quite put my finger on why. It's well-written, and the story is quite interesting. I just struggled to remain as fully engaged as I would like.

A cautious recommendation, then, to those who have enjoyed the author's other work.

This is an excellent epic fantasy sequel that makes me eager for the final book in the trilogy. Islington is definitely channeling his inner Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. I frequently recommend this book and series to my fantasy fan customers. Loved It!!

This is the second book in the series and it picks up right where the previous one left off. I think the magic system is well designed, the world building is great, I like the author's attention to detail as it relates to politics both high and low, and I think the characters are interesting. We learn a lot more about Caden in this book--and I have to admit, I love how he's dealing with him. Usually when you write the anti-hero type protagonist, you're left with a conundrum on how to make an evil character likable. Islington does something amazing. He wipes the character's memory and we essentially get a blank slate with Caden. Then as the series develops, we learn more and more about his back story. His motivations become clearer and, as a result, without too much info dumping at one time, we as readers, are able to connect with him. We begin to question our own assumptions about what exactly is right or wrong or is that dichotomy even relevant? Similarly, Islington's other characters are well thought out and developed.

Anyway, this is such a strong series, I would recommend it to anyone looking for something new. You likely wont be disappointed.
