I love when romances feature handi-CAPE-able characters and author Marie Meyer did it well in Live Out Loud. A woman, deaf since she was three years old, and a musician make a connection during a bar concert neither realizing just how desperately they will come to need one another in their lives. I enjoyed this book for many reasons; the heroine was smart, sassy, confident, and refused to let anything or anyone get in her way of achieving her dreams. The hero was driven, talented, sensitive, and a good person despite his worry of turning out like his father. Together they found ways to communicate and a sense of peace neither one had felt before.
Harper King reluctantly agrees to go with her roommate and best friend to a bar concert only because her roommate’s ex-boyfriend will be there and she wants nothing more than to make sure he doesn’t get his hooks in her again, what she doesn’t expect is to really feel the music or the immediate connection to lead guitarist, Thorin “Thor” Kline.
Harper hasn’t been very successful in the dating world, so she is skeptical when Thor asks for her number. I liked that she took his number and made him wait for her to call, but what I loved was that they were both very nervous on their first date. Thor because he recognized that she was different and it had nothing to do with her inability to hear and Harper because she wasn’t sure what to expect from an up and coming rock star. From that first date, I applauded Thor’s efforts to communicate with her both trying to understand her signing, making sure she could see his mouth and read his lips and also through text and notes (and let’s just say my heart melted a bit when they left the restaurant on their first date, but you’ll have to read the book to find out why).
Both Harper and Thor have complicated relationships with their parents but on very different levels. I was glad to see Harper work through some of hers during this story and while Thor had some resolution with his I hated that him sharing that piece of him with Harper was so glossed over especially since it was such a prevalent piece of him and a bone of contention between them. I felt a little cheated that that conversation was “off the page” so to speak.
There was no denying the physical connection between them and it was easy to see the peace they felt when together, I would have liked to see that emotional connection build a bit more over the course of the book. That being said, I love how easily these two managed to communicate despite the challenges between them and that right there is why this is such a fantastic romance.
Love is going out of your way to make the person you are with happy and in Live Out Loud both the hero and the heroine did that many times over. Thoroughly engaging with characters that leap off the page this is a book you don’t want to miss!

Unfortunately I was unable to get around to reading this book before it expired. Due to how NetGalley is set up, I am unable to remove this book from my shelf without leaving a review. As I have not been able to read the book, I am therefore unable to leave a review with my thoughts on this book.
Oh. My. God. The feels that Live Out Loud evokes... The emotional roller-coaster these characters take you on... Live Out Loud was so freaking good, I devoured it and immediately wanted more. First off, that cover. It's simple, but masterfully paints an image of the story. I loved so much about this book. The characters were lovable. Marie Meyer did a wonderful job of bringing Thor and Harper to life. The chemistry between them was off-the-charts. Marie's writing style was soulful and sexy. Live Out Loud will most definitely be one of my 10 favorite books of 2017. As a new-to-me author, I'm excited to see what Marie comes out with next.
This book sucked me in from the very beginning. I instantly fell in love with the characters. Marie took a real life situation and made us see it through a different perspective. With this book, we see how to total opposites will communicate with one another on a far more deeper meaning.
Thorin and Harper are total opposites to say the least. Thorin is a thriving musician whose career is starting to take off. Harper is deaf who is trying to be as successful as she can be. I loved Harper and how she looks at the world. She has come a long way in her life with everyone been disregarding her because of her being deaf. But she has not let that get in the way of achieving her goals. She is making her way through her career without letting her disability get in her way. Harper has to work twice as hard to get to the same page as everyone else.
Thorin hasn’t had a great childhood which results in how closed off he is now. He is used to just focusing on his music and keeping his bed warm on a daily basis. When Harper comes into the picture it becomes a game changer. He starts to feel things has never felt before and he doesn’t know how to handle them. With Harper though, he becomes a different person. He wants to be better because of her. Thorin opens himself up when he is with her but still keeps his past hidden.
I absolutely loved Harper, who she is on the inside and her outlook on life. She is always so positive about everything. Growing up her parents have treated her a certain way and her mom still tries to control her life. Her relationship is not a close one. Harper has overcome everything, not letting anything get in the way of her dreams. She is achieving well in school and is on her way to a great career. And she has not let being deaf get in the way of her love for music.
Music brought the two of them together. I love how Thorin is with Harper. He doesn’t let being deaf stop him from getting to know her, rather he uses it to get to know her better. Thorin is the sweetest with him, even going as far as learning how to communicate with her. He will do anything for her. Thorin is seeing life in a different perspective because of her and he is not taking anything for granted. But Harper feels that it’s too good to be true and is waiting for the shoe to drop. Her thinking, “what would a musician want with a deaf girl.” Plus her past experiences show that nothing good will happen to her. But their connection is undeniable.
Will Thorin and Harper ride through their differences? Or will their past make it all go tumbling down? Is their connection strong enough to keep them together?
First book by this author, I love this type of books and this book delivered what I always look in a good story. A great guy, a story that is very enjoyable and love. Harper and Thor are a great couple, both great characters and their story is fun to read, how they get to know each other and fall in love. The romance is sweet and lots of sexy times but not so much it is overwhelming. Looking forward for more books from Marie Meyer.

I enjoyed watching them come together and get through life's obstacles. From the first meeting these two felt a connection that grew stronger and stronger. I truly loved them together.

I really liked this book a lot. I decided to read this book because I really enjoyed the last book that I read by this author and I ended up liking this book just as much. This is a romance that just feels real which is really nice. I also loved the fact that this story is set in my hometown of St. Louis because it is really wonderful to see familiar landmarks worked into a story. This was a book that I was able to read for hours at a time and found it to be a really satisfying romance.
Harper was a great character. She is deaf and has had to work harder at some things in her life because of it. She is a pharmacy student who also works with deaf children at the local Y. Her roommate talks her into going with her to see a hot new band at a local club. She can't hear the music but she enjoys feeling it. She locks eyes with the guitar player in the band during the performance and he goes to find her as soon as it is over.
Thor works on cars by day and plays music at night. He doesn't really do relationships but there is something about Harper that wants to know better. Thor is also dealing with some pretty series family issues that has really had a big impact on his life. I loved Thor's character and thought he was a genuinely nice guy who is willing to make an effort.
I thought Harper and Thor were great as a couple. They have a lot of chemistry together and everything seemed to click between them from the very start. They both have family issues that they are dealing with although the situations are very different. They both come to each other with a bit of baggage. I liked how natural this pair were together and thought that the way they worked to communicate really added to the story.
I really liked the way this book came together. It was a lot of fun to watch this pair get to know each other and I think that the way the book was told from both Harper and Thor's point of views really worked well. The pacing of the story was well done with a nice balance of romance, family issues, and sexy times. I really enjoyed the descriptions regarding communication between the pair.
I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance. I thought that this was a really sweet but sexy story with amazing characters. I look forward to reading more from Marie Meyer soon.
I received an advance reader edition of this book from Forever (Grand Central Publishing) - Forever Yours via NetGalley.
This beautifully crafted novel tells a poignant story of healing, hope and true love. The author wove her story with sensitivity and a great deal of talent.
Thor Kline is the guitarist of an up-and-coming rock band, and some serious eye candy! Harper King is studying to become a clinical pharmacist. Right from the start, I loved how Thor and Harper connected when they first met. They have apparently nothing in common, and yet they are able to understand one another and accept who they are.
I appreciated how the author made them work so well, even though communicating is like exploring uncharted territory for both of them. Harper is deaf but she is an expert at reading people, and she is pleasantly surprised by Thor. He is downright adorable and treats her like he would any other person. He isn’t put off by her deafness and their natural connection is undeniable.
Harper’s life has never been easy, she had to overcome language barriers and the guilt and insecurities of her parents still negatively affect their relationship. They try to protect her but she wants to live her life, be accepted for who she is and make her own mistakes. Thor and Harper understand one another, they are speaking the same language and find strength in each other.
Live Out Loud is an emotion filled read that packs a powerful emotional punch. It is beautifully written, lyrical and perfectly paced. I definitely recommend it. It is a standalone told in dual POV.
Live Out Loud by Marie Meyer was such a great read!!
The characters and plot line were so intriguing, that I constantly wanted to keep reading to find out more!
The novel is so emotional as well! There are a few issues brought up in this novel, which I won't spoil for the readers, however, it is a situation not talked about enough in novels. It is because of this, that I completely fell for this book.
I definitely fell in love with this novel, and I can't wait to read more books from this author in the future!
4/5 Stars!
Received in exchange for a honest review.
Thor took my heart and breath away. This man saw harper and heard her voice without her saying a word. With Thor her world had words and a voice. He didn’t want her to change but went into Harper’s world and accepted who she was. He learned sign language so he could live out loud in her world. Be with her and understand who she is. She was seen as the person she was and not the one who couldn’t hear.
Thor though had demons and fears. It breaks your heart that he has such a amazing kind heart but doesn’t think love is in his life because of fear of being like his dad. It tore me to read that. he is nothing like his dad and it takes almost losing Harper to see that he wasn’t. It was having his world with noise become lost in silence without harper for him to realize he is a amazing man who isn’t his dad and one that is capable of love, anger, sadness and happiness without becoming something he isn’t. He has his world become alive with noise when Harper enters it. The silence of their conversations breathe life into him. They give him meaning and love. For Harper they give her acceptance, understanding and belief. They help one another find themselves, their courage and strength. The love they have for each other shines through in their actions. Thor and his moment swoon city. He is such a kind and caring man.
Harper tries hard to show that her ability not to hear doesn’t affect her. That she is capable of doing anything and she proves it. She does take mistakes harder due to insecurities that people view it as something other than a mistake but Thor does help her with this. He also helps her to talk to her parents about her feelings and bridge that gap. Harper gets a new start with her dad and her mom but her dad is more understanding to me. Her mom has the capacity to love and does just it is harder for her to let go than it is her dad.
Harper and Thor’s story is a beautiful story. We see two people trying to prove something. One that they aren’t someone and the other that being deaf doesn’t affect their ability to live, love and do any career. Both are loving, kind people. Their journey to acceptance and each other is filled with some hard choices and moments but one that is sexy, honest and sweet. Thor letting go and letting Harper in is amazing. Him deciding to take a chance is sweet and gives us a story to root for. A story of love, family, acceptance and finding a way to live loudly and have a voice when yours is silent. And see that silence isn’t that but life, love and a voice in itself if you just look beyond and see what is there. And what is there with Harper for Thor is beauty, love, support and the one that you are meant to be with.
I really loved this book about Harper, a deaf student about to graduate and start her rotation as a Pharmacy Tech at the children's hospital. And Thorin (Thor) a guitarist for an up and coming rock band - who sees Harper during a concert and decides to chase after her and ask her out.
All the two of them are opposites, they actually have a lot in common. Harper hasn't ever really dated anyone who is not hearing impaired. But there is a pull that she has never felt before towards Thor and so she decides to take a chance.
Thor comes from a home full of stress. His father physically abused him and his mother while he was growing up and so he's decided to never have a steady girlfriend, in fear that he would turn out like his dad. His dad started out loving his mom, but that all changed and he's so afraid to let someone into his life.
The chemistry between Harper and Thor is through the roof and Thor does everything he can to learn ASL so he can communicate with Harper.
Live Out Loud is a perfect life lesson love story that will steal a piece of your heart. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
you don't think about how certain things are hard to convey. in live out loud one of our main characters is deaf. harper king is not completely isolated, she can read lips, she speaks asl. her closest friend has learned asl in order to communicate with her. But asl is a language that isn't easily translated into the written word. asl is about movement and shape. the author did a brilliant job of incorporating the visual aspects of asl, while also differentiating to the reader what things were spoken and what things were signed.
thor reynolds, our hero, is an up-and-coming rock star. when he catches eye of harper at a gig he is intrigued by her. and her being deaf does not put him off. he's kind of the perfect guy about it really. he even goes out of his way to learn asl in order to communicate more easily with harper.
their first dates they rely on napkins and pens and their cell phone note apps and text messages. harper's deafness doesn't define their relationship. neither does thor's past, even though this is a concept he struggles with. his father was physically and verbally abusive. his mother only recently managed to get out of the toxic relationship and he's still her lifeline to safety. thor is afraid to get truly intimate with anyone because he fears that he will somehow be his father's son. in some ways, harper's deafness tricks him into becoming more intimate that he ever intended.
harper also has her reasons for being hesitant about the relationship. her previous partners were also deaf. and bridging the hearing and non-hearing world is not always a fun place to be, she's done that her whole life. her hearing parents have always made her feel lacking, not purposefully, but it's how she's made to feel regardless. as her relationship with her parents progresses to a better place and she understands her childhood a bit more, this allows her to open up to thor more than she ever intended.
this isn't to say that their relationship isn't without drama. the kind of baggage they carry around means that they are ripe for misunderstanding, and how they work through that will either break them or leave them stronger. this is a romance so you can guess which way it ends up. i really enjoyed harper and thor's story.
I always enjoy Marie Meyer's books and I think this one might be my favorite one yet. Her writing style really appeals to me and her characters are ones I am easily able to be sympathetic too and become invested in. She is an author I highly recommend and cannot wait to read more books by in the future. I am reviewing this book based on an ARC received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.
Review Scheduled to go live on blog on May 18th @ Naomi’s Reading Palace - http://nomisparanormalpalace.blogspot.com.au
Marie Meyer is a new to me author, and when I stumbled upon her book I had to give it a try. I really enjoy stories where the characters have to work hard because of the communication barrier between them. Thorin had a passion for writing and making music and their connection grew as Harper could feel it through the beats of his music.
I loved they way that Thor went out of his way to prove how sincere he was at beginning a relationship with Harper. He wanted to learn how to communicate with her, by learning her language. Difficult issues with his own family held him back a little, and he felt unworthy and determined that his relationship with Harper was only temporary.
Harper had never felt so accepted before, even by her own parents! She never expected a guy like Thor to see HER for the girl that she was. The more time they spent together, the easier it was for Harper to let Thor in, especially because he tried hard to make her feel normal.
I felt that this book didn't have the full impact that I hoped it would have. I missed a crucial moment between Thor and Harper in the beginning, right before their first date. Those moments when a relationship is first beginning are important to me as a reader. I was sick of Harper addressing Thor's by his full name over and over! Thorin Kline this and that, just Thor would've been ok. I was happy that Harper's relationship with her parents healed throughout the story, and that she had such a great friendship with her best friend Chloe. Overall, it was a sweet story of two people from different worlds that began a relationship, and a journey of a lifetime together.
I enjoyed this rock and roll romance with a twist. I loved the positive light shown on the deaf heroine. I liked Thor but he was a bit to angsty for me. There was some steamy hot sex scenes but there were also some sections that absolutely dragged. But Harper makes this a worthwhile read.
I thought I'd live in silence forever . . . and then I met him.
I'll never be able to hear, but music has always been a source of comfort for me. Rather than listen to the rhythm, I can actually feel the beat pulsing through me. It's pure bliss. So the moment I saw Thorin playing his guitar, I was mesmerized. I'd never seen anything more beautiful . . . or intimate. I couldn't tell where his body ended and the song began. He's everything I need in my life . . . I'm falling fast, hard, and deep.
I want him more than anything. But while I live in silence, Thor lives in secrets. He's holding something back-something that's keeping this intensity, this longing from being real. And the silence may be too loud to bear . . .
Harper King is deaf but that doesn’t stop her from enjoying music. Her friend takes her out one night to see a band that she’s crushing on and Harper ends up connecting with the guitarist of the band, Thor. Thor is enamored of Harper as she is with him. They end up going out and despite the difficulties in communicating they manage just fine.
Harper is in school and doing her pharmacy clinical rotation at a children’s hospital and doing really well. She lives with a friend and far away from her parents. She loves her parents but they try to coddle her because of her deafness. Despite their coddling, they never learned sign language which she hates. She believes that if they loved her enough they would have made every effort to learn to communicate with her in her language. When Thor states his desire to learn sign language, Harper is beyond thrilled. She tells him that she’ll teach him ASL if he’ll teach her how to play the guitar.
Thor has had a hard life. His father, who used to be a good dad became an abuser. His favorite punching bag is Thor’s mother but Thor finally got his mother away from his dad. He fears, however, that he’ll become just like his dad and this has kept him from any long-term relationships. Despite his fears he can’t seem to keep himself away from Harper. He wants it all but his fears may tear them apart.
Live Out Loud was a sweet romance. The relationship between Thor and Harper was so lovely and one that I really enjoyed reading.
Thor’s issues with his dad are many – completely justifiable. He wants to take care of his mother and keep her far away from his father. It’s obvious to the reader that Thor’s fear of becoming his father is ridiculous as he’s such a kind and generous person, but he has to get that through his head before he can completely commit to Harper. I loved that he finally managed to realize the truth and got his HEA with Harper.
While I really liked this book I have to say that it did lag at times. I understood Thor’s problem but I had a hard time with how he kept things from Harper. It made the book a bit frustrating at times, I must say. Overall, however, the book was really good and one I definitely recommend.

This is a contemporary romance story by this author. I really enjoyed this story, it was sweet with a different edge to it. The characters were fantastic, they had such an emotional connection. I was hooked from the first page and fell in love with the characters at the same time. I can't wait to read more from this author in the future.
Highly recommended
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book
I really enjoyed my first book by this author. It had me completely involved with the story from the very beginning. I loved the characters and the whole story, I also loved that the connection between the two felt real. This was a good book and I highly recommend it.
