Lady Arabella Danvers and Nash, the Earl of Clarendon, could not have been more different. Nash was looking for the perfect countess, someone he would be proud to call his wife. Arabella preferred the idea of rescuing injured animals and nursing them back to health than settling down and getting married. The last thing she expected was to have a proposal from the Earl of Clarendon. He was, in a noble way, trying to spare her reputation for they had been caught in a darkened Library together. Arabella was sure of only one thing. She was not going to say 'I do' to one of the most arrogant men she had ever had the misfortune of meeting.
With an elegant wit and a fast paced plot, Callie Hutton draws you into the glittering world of the Ton. She portrays the era very beautiful, and her writing is clear and flowed smoothly.
In Nash, Hutton has portrayed a 19th Century Lord in all his fine and not so fine detail. Image is everything to Nash, he expects his wife to meet very specific standards, and therefore he comes across as an arrogant man, who to be fair, I wouldn't want to marry either. I found it really difficult to like him. He is so condescending to Arabella that I wanted to give him a piece of my mind on many occasions. He isn't the lovely Regency Rake that we so often find in such romances that is for sure, but then maybe that is a good thing. Love him or hate him, Nash is a proper English Lord of his time.
I also found it difficult to like Arabella. She is so selfish that it is unbelievable. Nash saves her reputation by marrying her, but she isn't grateful. When he tries to do nice things for her, such as when he asked the cook to prepare a number of dishes for breakfast because he didn't know what she liked, that was wrong. And for goodness sake, the poor man was allergic to cats, so why did she insist on having her wonderful collection of pets in the house? The two of them would argue over everything, and I really wanted them to find some common ground away from the bedroom. I have, to be honest, I missed the romance in this book. There was passion, lots of that, but no love. Please note, there is so much more to a relationship than what happens in the bedroom. I would like to have read about their relationship a year on to find if they had actually found something in common rather than learning to live with each others faults.
Despite my complaints about the protagonists the story was very well written, and I think Hutton gave a realistic account of life in the ton and for that I commend her.
I give this book 3 stars.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley for review consideration.
Marrying the Wrong Earl by Callie Hutton is another fine addition to the Lords and Ladies in Love Series. Book 2 is Lady Arabella Danvers and Nash, the Earl of Clarendon’s tale. This story is fun, perfectly paced and totally entertaining. Marrying the Wrong Earl sucked me in from the very first page. A recommended read!
Please note that an ARC was generously provided in exchange for an honest review of which this is both honest and completely voluntary.
I enjoyed this novel. The plot contains romance and about accepting a person for who they are and not trying to change them. Would love to read more books by this author
I wasn't sure how I'd like this book. Really, a lady who fancies herself a freelance vet, taking in stray, injured animals and performing surgery and first aid on them? But I was able to get past the story device and found I liked the H and h very much, despite some flaws. He is a bit prideful and constantly telling the h how to behave. She places her animals well being above her marriage. And neither thinks they love or need the other. Despite those flaws, they have a passionate relationship, and when their own selfishness separated them, both soon realized what they had lost. Ending up with a sweet story, with a well matched couple.
A wallflower who rescues animals, tending to their injuries, and is not afraid to live the life of an eccentric spinster. She happens along a proper Earl, who likes to live a life that follows the rules of society. They both end up trapped in a marriage due to a scheming mother, whose plan fails to trap the right couple. Despite their differing views on how one should live, they end up falling passionately in love, despite it taking awhile to happen.
Now I really liked Callie Hutton's "Marrying the Wrong Earl". It was a good solid historical romance. Unique plot.
Love the book. The quick wedding between Arabella and Nash is full of ups and down and much humor. Thru it all Arabella keeps her head held high and weathers all the barbs. They both come to realize, after a brief separation, they are deeply in love with each other. It is a wonderful story of love conquers all. I would highly revommend this book.
Arabella and Nash's banter was always so whitty but got annoying very quickly. They had to fight over everything and yet fall in love dispite all their arguing. I get she wanted to help animals but she could have learned to compromise sooner.
It was a little choppy and jumped in certain areas. The book relied more on the physical attraction than slowly building a connection meaning it was hard to see how they could like each other for quite awhile. There were a couple of plot lines left open like the investment and the Jones son who stole from the estate. The characters needed more depth and seemed mercurial such they were very mad one moment then kissing the next. I also don't understand why Nash kept telling Arabella not to worry what people think then loses his temper when she does something inappropriate. Arabella had deep empathy for animals but could not extend that to her husband. In other words there were conflicting personality traits. I liked the book but was confused because the characters were not consistent.
Another hit for Callie Hutton! Lady Arabella Danvers was up for this season. She was hopeful that if she is forced to marry, she could at least find someone with whom she would enjoy spending time. Truth be told, she would rather spend her days with her pets. But her mother has her sights set on marrying Arabella to the Earl of Pembroke, an unsightly man who just happens to be rich. She encourages his pursuit of her daughter at every opporutnity. Arabella has already turned down three offers, and has tried her best to dissuade the earl's pursuit. She has no intentions to let this man--old enough to be her grandfather with a fat, fleshy sweaty body--become her intended. In fact, she hoped to deflect his offer if there was any way possible, and cannot understand her mother's persistence in trying to saddle her with someone from whom she just wants to run and hide.
Arabella loves animals and is passionate about helping them. More often than not, if she cannot find someone to take the animals after she has healed them, she keeps them as pets. She is much more willing to spend her days as a spinster taking care of animals. This hobby of taking in strays with wounds and fixing them up has already earned her a questionable reputation with the ton.
She has promised a cat to a woman in town and decides to deliver the animal. On the way there, the cat finds her way out of the basket she is being carried in, and up a tree. Not able to stand losing her animal, Arabella convinces an innocent bystander, the Earl of Clarendon (Nash), to help retrieve her cat. Despite falling in the mud, tearing the seat of his pants, and succumbing to his allergy of cat dander, the Earl climbs the tree and retrieves the cat. His walk through Hyde Park ruined, he leaves as quick;ly as possible, hoping to never cross paths with either Miss Arabella Danvers or her cats again.
Later that same night Nash joins his sister and her husband at the Ashbourne ball, thinking he may 'settle' and offer for a young debutant -- Lady Grace. But he doesn't count on seeing Lady Arabella --his sister's closest friend. The two are forced into a waltz by his sister, and do nothing but irritate each other throughout the entire five minute affair. In need of some peace of mind before he proposes to Lady Grace, Nash heads to the Ashbourne dark library hoping to take a breather before making his proposal. Unbeknownst to him, Miss Danvers receives a note on the ballroom floor requesting she attend her mother immediately, who was waiting for her in the Ashbourne library. She rushes there thinking her mother ill. Nash and Lady Arabella find themselves together in the library - in the dark. They argue and Lady Arabella tries to leave. But as luck will have it, Lady Arabella trips and lands in his arms at the same moment her mother springs the parson's trap that she had intended for her daughter and Lord Pembroke, only to find the wrong earl was caught. Her mother and some frineds who would be witnesses catch Lady Arabella and Lord Nash in each other's arms, in the dark.
Compromised and facing ruin, Nash realizes that not only will Lady Arabella be ruined, but his good name will take a hit. There is nothing for it but to marry. But does the marriage have a chance of a happier ever after? And what will this rocky road look like?
Ms. Hutton does a great job with her characters. She takes the storyline of marrying off a young debutant to for the sake of money, and makes it one that you never saw coming. The story flows quickly and has hilarious moments. I read from cover to cover - not wanting to miss anything. I have not missed a single Regency written by Ms. Hutton, and look forward to her next one. This book deserves all five stars - I hope anyone that loves Regency Romances picks it up!
I really enjoyed this historical romance. It was really fun and enjoyable with some wonderful characters that really grow throughout this story. I have not read the story before this one but have read the author before and this story was as good as the previous books I have read.
The wrong earl is really about Arabella and her mother. Her mother is desperate to marry her off but she keeps trying to find old men and so A keeps turning them down. In desperation her mother sets a trap for A and she invites the earl that wants to marry her, to join her. Instead Nash enters and ends up in the dark with A and so thats how she ends up trapped with the wrong earl into marriage.
Nash and A are not strangers. A is best friends with his sister and the afternoon they get trapped together he helps her rescue a cat. He thinks she is a menace and she thinks he is very stuffy and uptight and she would be right, and he is is right as well.
So what happens when the menace and the stuffy earl get together? Well thats when this book gets fun. You see A gets very sick and Nash takes care of her and thats how they start liking each other. The big issue between the two is that A is an amateur veternarian. And Nash thinks countesses should not take care of animals.
Both characters really grow in this book and I really enjoyed watching that happen and watching them for for each other. They also are really adorable together and I really loved watching them become a couple..
I received this from Netgalley/ Publisher in exchange for an honest review. I have already read several books from this author and I have enjoyed them. I was really excited for this one but I was disappointed. Arabella is a lady who is forced into a marriage with an Earl. This Earl was just a huge overbearing jerk. He got on my last nerve. Arabella loves taking care of animals but her new husband forbids it. I mean really she never stood up for herself. She never talked with him just took care of animals. She drove me nuts too.
This book was pretty average as stories go. Similar premise that I've read before. Nothing very interesting.
Another entertaining read in the Lords and Ladies In Love series from author Callie Hutton. Marrying The Wrong Earl started well with the main characters of Arabella Danvers and Nash, The Earl Of Clarendon. Their unconventional pairing was fraught with challenges from the start but the many happenings and shenanigans of both characters never failed to bring the smiles in a story that didn't miss a step. The menagerie of house guests and subsequent obstacles they posed for the comical duo were amusing, leaving the characters reeling, with often heartfelt and tempestuous outcomes. Arabella and Nashes characters were likeable from their introductions in the story and did not waver in a read that managed to steal this readers heart. The story also contained within some noticeable mentions of Hutton's characters from previous stories adding to what was an already favoured read.

I enjoyed this novel. The plot contains romance and about accepting a person for who they are and not trying to change them.
Lady Arabella Danvers cares for injured animals, a "hobby" that is not ladies of the ton. Her mother needs Arabella to marry immediately, but does not tell her why and keeps having older men court her.
Nash, the Earl of Clarendon, has decided to take a wife that follows society's rules. He also needs money to fund his estates. At the time, he does not know why his estates are not providing income.
They meet when Arabella is chasing a cat and asks Nash to get the cat down from the tree. They meet again at a ball. When Arabella receives a note from her mother to meet her in the library, she discovers Nash there. Her mother storms in and sees them in a "compromising" position. However, her mother had someone else in mind for her daughter, but Nash proposes marriage. Arabella tries to get Nash to cry off since they would never suit. They marry quickly to avoid the gossips.
Nash is not happy with Arabella's "hobby" and wants her to act like a proper countess. Arabella was raised to be a proper lady but enjoys helping hurt animals. This causes arguments between them. When Arabella leaves a dinner party to help an injured animal, Nash sends her away. He feels he cannot have a wife who defies society and make others, especially those in Parliament, question him. Will Arabella forgive Nash for sending her away? Will they both realize they love each other and be able to accept each other for who they are?
This book is typical of its genre. No surprises, but a good, relaxing read. Just the right length. The hero and heroine have a series of misadventures including a very amusing introduction through a pet, I would recommend this book to any fan of regency romances and will certainly look out for other books by the same author.
