This is my first novel by Ms. Reichs. All I can say is 'AWESOME!!!!' The characters were deep and elusive. I had a slow moment. What I thought was a side story for one character, turned out to be totally for another character. What a twist.
Sunny and her brother Gus will take you on and adventure to find a missing girl. While theme may seem a little over used, Ms. Reichs throws the read on a ride of twist, turns and trap doors.
I would recommend Ms Reichs to anyone who enjoys the Thriller genre. Kathy brought her A game to this novel.
A real page turner couldn't put it down characters are well developed
Sunday Night is more like Stephanie Plum or Kinsey Millhone than Temperance Brennan, not only because they are PI's and not forensic anthropologists, but because of her self-deprecating yet strong character. As in the Brennan series, Kathy Reichs has a way with words that consistently surprised me, so much that I paused to react fully on several occasions. The Two Nights investigation takes Sunday to a number of locations in a short period of time, searching for a girl, reflecting on her own existence and the life that created the tough person she has become. It's a good opening for a new female PI who is close enough to others already on the pages of novels, but different enough that I remember more than simply the scar on her face.
This is a completely new style for the author, and a very different read to the Bones series. As a detective style thriller, it does a good job and tells a very descriptive story so well you'll have every little detail there in your mind as you read it. The only let downs are the slightly inevitable predictable nature of the story, a common flaw with this type of book, and the way conversations are portrayed; they tend to be a bit short and curt and are a little sharp in contrast to the heavy descriptive storytelling surrounding them.
Sunday Night used to work as a police officer but left after an incident on the job left her injured. She takes a private job working for a woman who is searching for her grand daughter who disappeared after the rest of her family was killed in a terrorist attack.
This was the first book I have read by Kathy Reichs and I couldn’t wait to dive into it. The story is fast paced and suspenseful. I did find myself wanting to learn a bit more about Sunday than we were told but I still enjoyed the story.
This book was a little different than the authors usual books, at times I found it a little confusing. A lot of words were wasted describing things like surveillance and in one instance outwaiting a suspect in a hotel hallway. I finished the book and didn't dislike it completely but I believe that if this was the first book I read by this author it would probably be the last.
Having read and loved most of Kathy Reich's other books, I was delighted to have a chance to read this new standalone novel.
While it is a perfectly good book and well written, it just did not engage me as much as Reichs' other writing has done so left me a bit disappointed. Having said that I did finish it in just a few days (around work!) so clearly was better than many other books I have read.
If more Sunnie Night books are written I would definitely give them a go, but this one was not a must-read for me.
This new series from Reichs features a new to us heroine who is smart, tough, and talented in things a "average" woman isn't and whose desire for thruth and justice, comes from her own dark past.
Meet Sunday Night, she is a woman with physical and psychological scars, and a killer instinct, who is out to catch a group of killers and bring revenge and satisfaction, for herself and those who pay her to find a missing girl. She has gone missing, lost in the chaos of a bomb explosion, and the family needs Sunnie’s help.
Is the bombing a ruse, to hide a secret group of jihadists or something else.
Reichs really went all out with this one. I highly recommend giving it a go, it's a changes from Tempe, and could be a new start to a new series about Sunnie.
I have never read this author before even though she has written a popular series. I did not find this book very interesting. The plot was rather meager, the character development lacking, and the attempted use of humor not very humorous. With her degree of popularity, I would assume her other books do not have these issues.
Kathy Reichs continues to provide high quality writing that keeps the reader engaged until the end. Sunday Night, the main character is intriguing and mysterious. Hopefully this is just the beginning of many many more adventures for her and brother Gus. The back story is just as intriguing and fodder for much more character development. I am hoping the author is already hard at work on the next book.
The writing style was awful, so very different from the Temperance Brennan series. I didn't particularly enjoy the story and had no interest in any of the characters. Disappointing!
This was not a Brennan book in any way. Sunday Night, the protagonist is a PI who is a very troubled individual. I will not go into why because of spoilers, but it is fully explained in the novel. Her cohort, Gus, is also her twin. The story begins with a bomb going off on the north side of Chicago. Among those killed are a woman and her son. Her young daughter has disappeared. Sunnie is hired by their Grandmother to "get" the people who set off the bomb and find her granddaughter. Her investigation takes you from Charlotte to Chicago to Los Angeles to Louisville. Lots of action and mayhem throughout the novel. It was excellent weekend reading and I hope the author writes more of Sunnie and Gus' adventures. Thanks to Net Galley and Bantam Books for an ARC for an honest review.
This is a stand alone book which I hope continues with the characters. A big change without having Brennan involved in the plot. Loved how the story moved. Lots of action but really would like to know more about the main character.
Used to read all of Kathy Reichs books but I got bored with Temperance Brennan. Sunday Night is so refreshing! Fantastic read and will definately read any other books with this character.
The characters are flawed but believable and I enjoyed the turns and twists.
Would definately recommend to read.
New characters but still the high level of quality thrillage. looking forward to more.
I've always meant to read a Kathy Reichs book since I was curious about her Temperance Brennan series after watching Bones on TV. I still haven't gotten around to it, doh! But then this book came along. It's described as a standalone novel with a protagonist named Sunday Night. (Great name haha, kind of made me think of an old school noir crime story with a hard boiled detective, Sunday Night. Or maybe fond memories of watching Mathnet on that kid's show Square One where they had characters named Monday and Tuesday lol. But I digress.)
It took me a while to warm up to Sunday. Maybe bc even being inside her mind, there was a standoffish quality to her just like the characters she interacted with in the book took a while to warm up to her (if they even did). Things picked up a bit when Gus entered the book, making her more likable. That's also when the action really started picking up and I started plowing through the book more quickly.
The chapters that are titled as a countdown to something confused me at first. I wasn't sure whose point of view it was, and it wasn't quite what I expected but I think it worked.
There were segments that felt a bit too detailed such as when all the streets Sunday was navigating through were listed. I felt like that specificity was unnecessary and a little boring to read, but then again if I were a Chicago native, I would prolly be quite excited about all that detail, esp since I could really picture them. (Which I kind of could bc I've visited Chicago twice in the past couple of years and recognized a couple of the neighborhoods mentioned.)
While overall I thought this book was just ok for me and while this book is described as standalone, of Reichs were to right a second book featuring Sunday and Gus, I would prolly give it a read to see if there's improvement. Sunday and Gus were likable enough as a duo that I'd be interested in following them on another case, and I think there's still more to say on Sunday's backstory.
Thanks to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, and Kathy Reichs for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. :o)
Wow, this was such a great mystery/ thriller! I wasn't sure what to expect after reading most of the Temperance Brennan series, but Sunday Night proves to be an awesome protagonist. She has a serious past which add a big chip on her shoulder, making her the perfect person to be hired as a private investigator to find a missing girl possibly kidnapped by terrorists. I loved that the protagonist is flawed, adding her to credibility. And I LOVED Gus! I wish there was more of him... hopefully the author decides to make this a series including more of Gus (hint, hint!). This was a very satisfying read, I highly recommend it.

Two Nights is the latest story from Kathy Reichs and a departure from her "Bones" characters. From the very beginning Two Nights intrigues the reader and quickly becomes a page turner which at times has you at the edge of your seat. I hope this is the beginning of a new series. I was given an early copy to review.

it was amazing
bookshelves: currently-reading.
This is the FIRST Kathy Reichs book I've read ... I was looking for a new writer to follow... and I've found her .. This is a riveting thriller that I devoured in 2 sittings ... The narrative and prose rockets you along to the exhilarating conclusion. Hopefully, this is not the last we hear of Sunday "Sunnie" Night her new protagonist.
Sunnie is a former Marine & Cop ... living in Charleston, South Carolina on remote "Goat Island" ... visited frequently by "Bob" ... who happens to be a squirrel, and sometimes by her foster father: "Beau" Beaumonde. Her withdrawal from society is a result of a "justifed" shoot of an unarmed man while on the job.
Beau in an attempt to rekindle her re-entry to life tries to engage her in a "cold" case investigation. She listens to the case as presented by a wealthy, well-connected Southern matron: Opaline Drucker . A Jewish girl's school was bombed resulting in the death of her daughter and grandson ...however, her 15 year old granddaughter "Stella" is missing ... probably kidnaped and murdered ... but, maybe not . The photo of Stella reminds "Sunnie" of her at that age ... especially the long and fiery red hair.
Along the way, we learn bits and pieces of "Sunnie's" dark past .... and her attempt to extricate herself from a seemingly impossible situation.
She initially returns to Chicago... the site of the bombing ... and is quickly drawn into the terrorists network ... attempts are made on her life ... and she, hopscotches across the US chasing clues and terrorists.... from Chicago to Los Angeles , to Washington , D.C and the climax culminating in Louisville at the Kentucky Derby. She enlists the aid of her "twin" Gus to help her through this savy , high tech thriller.
I would like to thank Net Galley for providing me with an ARC of this thrilling novel .. in exchange for an honest review. I look forward to more adventures with the "Two Nights" ... Sunnie and Gus.
