This was a fast paced story with lots going on. Sometimes I felt like I was reading a story within a story. It became a little confusing with all the minor characters. Sunny cult like upbringing was finally explained in the last chapter but I felt it was came too late. I usually like stand alone books but the one was a little lacking.
This is a stand alone novel from the author of the Bones series. I thought it was really good. Actually. I sort of hope that she turns it into a new series because I really loved these characters. Sunday Night is former law enforcement how is contacted by an eccentric old woman to track down the people that killed her daughter and grandson and kill them, in addition to finding her granddaughter who has been missing since the tragedy. Sunnie is a kick ass female heroine and a bit of a smart ass. I loved it. I would recommend this to anyone who likes thriller / mystery novels and / or strong female leads. Again, I hope this ends up being just the first in a series.
I enjoyed the book. I did, however, have some problems with following the story at times. I thought the jumping to the chapters referring to escape were Stella, and later figuring out it must be Sunnie. The characters were interesting, but I did not get a clear picture of what they looked like, except maybe some of the bad guys. Still not clear on how the bad guys found her so quickly, but there were lots of unanswered questions. Still, it was a good book, and I enjoyed Kathy going for a standalone.
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I will not be able to review this book. I have deleted it from my system and will buy the book if I decide to read it on my own.
Thank you
Ruby
When I read that Kathy Reichs was starting a new series I wondered if she could pull it off if it wasn't a character involved in forensic anthropology. But boy did she, and she did a great job. The two Night twins, Sunday and Gus Night, are a great duo and will make an exciting crime partnership into the future! Bring on the next novel please.
This is a standalone book. It could possibly be the start to a new series, but we will have to see. The main character, Sunday Night, is not fully fleshed out, and more could be written about her.
Sunday is a very damaged person. As the book progresses, we learn that Sunday and her twin brother, Gus, were raised in a cult as children. It was not pleasant for either of them, but Sunday had it especially hard. Upon leaving the cult, they lived with Beau, a police man who agreed to foster them. Beau gave them the only stability they had ever know.
As an adult, Sunday first goes into the military, and then the police force. An incident causes Sunday to lose her job and now she is living as a recluse on a remote island. Beau, worried for her, convinces her to look into a year old case of a kidnapped teen. Sunday reluctantly agrees and soon finds herself investigating a strange cult that may be responsible for the kidnapping and more.
The book moves along at a fast pace and is interesting. I liked Sunday, even though she had many personality flaws. Her brother Gus is a charming counterpoint to her antisocial nature. The exploration into the dark side of cults was fascinating. I enjoyed reading this.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I have read and enjoyed all of the Temperance books and I was excited at the idea of a stand alone with a new character.
Sunnie was a tough character to like. She's had quite a rough life and it's made her hardened and bitter. Of course that's understandable, but it also made her hard to root for. Gus was delightful and the banter between them added a bit of much needed levity.
Plot wise, it was an interesting set up and wanting to know how it played out is the only thing that kept me going. The story was monotonous and boring: a lot of tailing people and moving hotels. Seriously, that's pretty much all that happens until the last 50 pages.
Overall, it was a clever idea with some things I didn't see coming, but the piecemeal reveals and long passages without dialogue had me skimming. If Sunnie becomes a series, I will not be reading.
**Huge thanks to Bantam Books for providing the arc free of charge**
Heart stopping and left me breathless! Another well written book by this author introducing a new heroine.
I received a free copy from NetGalley. Without the Kathy Reichs on the title page, I wouldn't know she had been the author. Sunday Night is very different from her usual characters. Then again, she's had a difficult childhood and works with law enforcement, so maybe she isn't all that different after all. Ms. Night gets persuaded to step outside her comfort zone and go looking for a missing girl, who we learn may be going through something much like Ms. Night did herself as a child. A page turner, I look forward to others in the series.
Sunday Night is one tough lady. The events of her life have shaped her into a woman who likes to stand-alone and who likes to stand away from the rest of life. When her mentor Beau comes calling with a case that needs her help, she is pulled out of her hermits existence and back into the real work.
There are two stories that are being told side-by-side. The primary one involves the case Sunday is working on (with assistance from her twin brother Gus) while the other is a more nebulous story. Both are riveting.
There's violence and chase – definitely not a book for young children. What was interesting to me was I suddenly realized that if Sunday were a man, much of the story would fit into my preconceived notions of a thriller. As a woman, the character was constantly surprising to me. I could not put the book down until I finished it and once I finished it, I wanted another book to follow Sunday as she rejoins the land of the living.
I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher via Netgalley.
I'm a long-time fan of Reichs' Temperance Brennan series, so when I saw that she had a new stand-alone novel coming out, I just had to read it.
The main character, Sunday "Sunnie'' Night is a recluse, living on an island off the SC coast by choice, following a severe injury that ended her law enforcement career. Her foster father is worried about her, so he recommends she take a case looking for a woman's missing granddaughter. The case is a lot more complex than just a missing teenager. The girl's mother and brother were killed in a bombing attack on a Jewish school. The missing girl was with them that day, but disappeared. Their grandmother is a wealthy and powerful woman....she wants to know who killed her daughter and grandson and where her granddaughter is. Sunnie takes the case, not for the money, but to help the teenage girl. The case quickly heats up....Sunnie is followed, shot and attacked multiple times as she starts her investigation. Is the missing girl, Stella, alive? Dead? Who took her and why?
I have mixed emotions about this book.
On the one hand, I love a good action-thriller story. The premise is exciting and there were some great action sections to the plot. The main character, Sunnie, is gritty, intelligent and capable. Her military and police training keep her in top form as she uncovers clues that this could be a much more involved case than she first thought.
But....there were times when I feel the plot was just a bit too much. Over-done. Not believable. Overly dramatic. Sunnie has so many demons from her past that I never really found a connection with her. Maybe if more details about her issues had been provided earlier in the story I might have understood her a bit more? That portion of the plot was just too slow to develop, and comes in fits and starts. A bit here. A bit there. More development of her character and information on her past earlier in the story and I might have been a bit more into it.
As it is, this is a departure from the typical Reichs' novel. It is a gritty, action-filled PI story. The book is well-written, as are all Reichs' books. I just think maybe it isn't a good fit for me. Sunnie Night just didn't grab my attention and emotions. I did enjoy the book. The basic plot was interesting and I wanted to find out what happened to Stella. But, I just really don't like the main character. I'm not sure if Reichs intends to make this a series....but, if so, it isn't one I'm going to pursue.
But, I do recommend that readers who enjoy PI thriller novels give this one a try! It's not my cup of tea....but it just might be the perfect summer thriller for someone else! Interesting plot. Great action scenes. And thrilling conclusion!

I have never read any of the Temperance Brennan books by Kathy Reichs before so I can’t compare this to her other books. I have a feeling though that Two Nights is a completely different departure for Reichs. Thrillers are also not my usual go to books either but sometimes I like to read something different. For fans of the thriller genre this has the usual requirements: former loner cop with a past and a tough exterior, action, a sidekick, guns, and bad guys. I liked Sunnie and thought she had a hard edge but also a soft side. The books was fast paced and engaging. Reichs does a good job throughout the book explaining Sunnie’s traumatic childhood. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good thriller and fans of thrillers in general will enjoy this book as well.
Sunday Night is damaged but not totally broken. Former military and former cop and survivor of a horrific childhood Sunnie knows about nightmares. Now she is being asked to find a young woman whose plight she can relate to. But will the memories destroy her before she can save the girl?
Two Nights by Kathy Reichs is a well written intriguing tale of pain, survival and facing your deepest fears. In events that could’ve been ripped straight from the headlines this story brings you darkness and light and all the shades of gray in between. This is an incredible story that will keep you thinking long past the last page.
In this book, Kathy Reichs has given us a great new heroine. Sunday Night is enigmatic. She is tough. She is stubborn. She is sarcastic. She says she is damaged and has a temper that is her own worst enemy. She lives alone on a tiny island near Charleston, SC with no phone or internet. Her contact with the world is Beau, the ex-cop who raised her after something terrible happened to her as a child. He convinces her to take try to find a young girl who was kidnapped. After an attempt on her life she calls in her twin brother August “Gus” Night who is as different from her as he can be. How they track the bad guys and figure out what they are planning leads to a fast paced exciting story that winds down nicely from the climax and explains some things about Sunnie’s past. I loved this book and I love Sunnie. I hope we hear from her again.
A thriller packed with action. Kathy Reich's is a wonderful write. You can never go wrong with her books.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Author and forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs has created an explosive mystery (pun intended) with an interesting and very current-times-relevant case. You may know of her from her Temperance Brennan series (you know, the one that Fox's longest-running hit series Bones was loosely based on), but if you haven't read any by her, this one is a great place to dip your toes in the water.
You've got an interesting protagonist: Sunday Night... in a weird way, she's a heroine you want to root for -- even if she's more of an anti-hero loner with a very dark and complicated history, not to mention the great name!
You've got an interesting hook: in a bombing outside a school, a visiting family loses two of the three members in the explosion, and the other goes missing... and leaves a grieving grandmother with money to spare looking for answers.
You've got some highly entertaining side characters: specifically Gus, but also Bob! :)
Overall, I enjoyed this romp across the country in search of a group of bombers and a missing young girl. I actually enjoyed it so much that I'd be thrilled if Reichs decided to write another Sunday Night novel. :)
This is such a different story. Sunday is a very odd and tortured character. I really liked her for her determination and tenacity. Sunday has a lot of demons and that is why she took the job to look for the bombers. She also felt that Stella was still alive. She is met with so many twists and turns to the mystery.
First of all many thanks to Random House Publishing-Ballantine and Netgalley for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review. This is a standalone thriller from Kathy Reichs and a totally different book than her usual. Sunni Night is a PI that was ex-military serving in Afghanistan and an ex-cop who left that job after getting injured and left with one eye and scaring on her face. After that and her tragic past she's living on a small island as a recluse until the man that raised her talks her into searching for a missing girl. Sunni meets with the rich socialite that wants her to search for her missing granddaughter and she's willing to pay really well. The granddaughter's mother and young brother were killed in a bomb explosion and the granddaughter disappeared. Sunni travels all over chasing clues about the kidnappers. I got confused a few times trying to keep up with who , what and where . I would loved to hear about Sunni's history about her family. This was a very fast paced mystery. Will be leaving a review on Netgalley, Goodreads, Twitter, Instagram and Amazon.
Sunnie is an ex-troubled kid, an ex-Army vet, an ex-cop and not the most pleasant to be around. But, when she is dragged in to a case, she takes it strongly and personally. There is a child, kidnapped and who-knows-what for the purposes of a fringe radical group. It’s up to Sunnie, her twin brother, and the police on the job to find the child and stop the madness. Only Sunnie’s constant anxiety keeps her alive. Can she save the child? Should she?
This is a fast-paced thriller with the interspersed vignettes that make little sense until you near the end of the book. What is happening to the child? Is it the vignettes? Is it something else?
I had not read a novel by Kathy Reichs before and this certainly kept me on the edge of my seat. While I’m now in high school, I don’t think I’ll purchase it simply because I’m not seeing those sort of thrillers moving in the checkout area. I will be sure to recommend that students go down the block to the local library if its in their interest areas.

Wow and OMG and Whoa. How else could I describe this book. It is engaging from the first to the last page. You seriously do not want to put it down because you are scared you will miss something. It is so well written you just want more. I know the book had to end but I did not want it too.
Reich's famous for her Temperance Brennan novels is now branching out into stand-alone novels. In style I might add. Reich introduces a character Sunday Night a former marine and cop. Yes she has issues but takes on the job because it is similar to her own story. Reich's even explains the unusual name. Sunday is a strong female character with a strong sense of humor, and her sarcasm is at a level of true dedication. It all adds to the story and who Sunday is.
Reich's develops the story at a nice steady pace and there are many twists and turns along the way, I have to admit I did not see the whole ending coming. Parts became obvious over the course of the book but I did not expect the leader to be who it turned put to be. Reich's deserves praise for that alone. I love a good mystery and she fooled me.
This book is very well written and I can see many having reservations about it because there is no Bones. My advice is read it ignoring all you know about the author and I think maybe your perception will change.
Would I recommend this book? Definitely YES.
