Kaylee Ramay leaves the table at a dinner party to find a bathroom and instead discovers a gruesome scene. She barely escapes the house. The same man who helped Jules, from book one, escape, sends Kaylee (now Grace) to hide with Jules.
K9 Officer Hugh Murdoch is still recovering from the gunshot wound to his thigh. He and his K9, Lexi, are bored, so they are driving his partners crazy showing up around town when he hears something going down on his police scanner. When he meets Grace, he immediately knows she’s lying about who she is, not to mention being attracted to her. He’s found something new to focus on. Hugh is funny, snarky, intelligent, easy going and has a big heart.
Kaylee/Grace grew up poor, cold, and wearing thrift store clothing in a basement apartment. She currently works for a college in development and fundraising. She has a condo that lets in lots of light, has an excessive amount of clothes and shoes and loves her job. Forced to go on the run, moved to an extremely small Colorado town, with only the clothes on her back, in a falling down house with 5 other people, she’s feeling lost and scared. Grace was a bit whiny at times, and it took awhile, but she came around.
Hugh begins stalking Grace, and not very subtly. The banter between these two is pretty entertaining. When a sniper takes a shot at the two of them, Grace spills her story to Hugh and Theo thinking she’s been found.
Theo goes caveman over Jules and the kids after hearing Grace’s story and moves Grace out of their house. Theo remains as gruff and unchatty as ever, except around Jules and the kids. He still doesn’t know their history but we do find out Jules’s reasons for continuing to keep him in the dark.
I still want to hug Sam.
I liked this book better than the first. Lots going on, but it flows well, holds your interest and goes at a good pace. While you probably could read this as a standalone, it will be a much better read if you read them in order.
Otto remains the last man of mystery and we are given a small blurb into the next book. I’m looking forward to his story. He seems to have a few secrets he’s keeping.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher.

After witnessing a horrible crime and fleeing her old life, Kaylee finds herself living in some small town in Colorado and going by the name Grace. The man who helped her escape her old life has put her up in some rundown house with another woman and four kids. Oh, and her new job is shoveling poop at the town’s dog kennel. “Grace” is not thrilled with her new digs, however, she can’t complain since she’s still alive. The only problem with her plan to lay low is that the local police officer has his eyes set on her and not in a good way. He knows she’s hiding something, and is relentless in figuring it out.
The story pretty much just focuses on Grace as she tries to settle in to her new life. She had to ditch her college degree, her job, her friends, and ultimately start over again. So, it goes without saying that she’s a little bitter by her circumstance. She’s very prideful and isn’t too thrilled with her new identity or the fact that she went from having a college degree to a GED. However, she doesn’t really get to dwell on it for too long, what with the nosy cop and the multiple attempts on her life. Someone is out for Grace and it would appear that they may have found her. Cars are blowing up, balconies are collapsing, and she’s dodging bullets left and right. Pretty soon that nosy cop is the only person that makes her feel safe. Every time there’s an attack, he’s always there to save her. Which, doesn’t make his partners or his LT very happy with him. Especially since he’s on medical leave for getting shot in the previous book. Regardless of the amount of times he ends up in the hospital though, he’s always got a smile and something smart-ass to say.
I really liked that the story didn’t just focus on Hugh and Grace though. We got to see Jules and the kids a lot in this book since Grace is living with them. And with Jules and the kids comes the surly officer Theo. It was really great getting to see everyone. Jules has gone from the newbie in town, to taking Grace under her wing like a champ. It wasn’t that long ago that she was in Grace’s shoes. So, it was great getting to see her and the kids step up and help someone in need. We also got to see a bit more of Otto, Theo and Hugh’s friend/co-worker. He pops into the kennel to check in on and work with a dog there. We still don’t know much about him, or the dog, but I’m really hoping that they are the next two up to bat.
On The Chase is a good solid read. I enjoyed Hugh’s easy banter and the fact that he could make those around him loosen up with his annoying ways of pestering. I did find myself getting a little bored about three quarters of the way through. Maybe it was because it seemed like every time we turned around something was blowing up or someone was shooting at Hugh and Grace. I don’t know. I still found the story enjoyable and will continue on in the series. Like I said, I’m really hoping that Otto is next and I can’t wait to see what the dog’s story is and why it’s in the kennel.

Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series book two picks up right where the first one left off. The first couple of chapters following Kaylee and how she ended up needing to go into hiding. Kaylee went from thrift stores to Rodeo Dr. is finally living the life she always dreamed of living as a child with a job she loves and now a Disney Prince perfect boyfriend, until she sees something she's not suppose to and has to go into hiding to save her live. Hugh still recovering from his gunshot wound from the last book is on medical leave and it is driving him crazy with boredom. He starts to get a funny feeling like someone is watching him but before he can talk it over with Theo he meets Grace. Grace is a high school friend of Jules visiting, only Hugh knows that just about everything that comes out of her mouth is lie, and he's determined to find out why.
Kaylee, or Grace as she is now called, hates that this is what has become of her life her college degrees, her job, her nice new clothes are all gone to her and she is now sharing a house with one bathroom with five other people and back to wearing thrift store clothes; but she's alive and she doesn't know who she can trust. Grace not trusting Hugh and vise versa leads them into some kind of silly arguments and with Hugh's sense of humor he can get annoying, but all that just hides the attraction that both of them are trying hard to ignore. But then Hugh's truck blows up and when Hugh and Grace finally do kiss they get shot at. That's when Grace comes clean about who she is and why she's hiding, she's afraid that he found her. Hugh also has problems it's not her they are after a drug lord who runs drugs through the town has put a hit out on Hugh and Grace is just caught in the crossfire. Between Kaylee's issues, the drug lord, and the drug running MC going through town causing problems it is an action filled, romantic, and sometimes funny (because Hugh's humor is meant to annoy and he succeeds) book.
Overall, this was another win for me. I like how Kaylee is making the relationship go at a normal pace. Lexi, Hugh's Belgian Malinois and K-9 partner, has a personality all her own and it was fun to see what mess Jules' twin brothers would get into next. Kaylee does have some personal growth that the kids and Hugh help her with so she's not as shallow at the end of the book. I love Kaylee and Hugh together with his sense of humor she can take it and give back just as hard.

On the Chase provides a stellar follow-up to Run to Ground, making Ruggle's Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series one that's not to be missed.
After Kaylee witnesses a crime, she goes on the run and becomes Grace. She finds sanctuary with Jules, heroine of book 1. And while Jules's storyline isn't advanced with this book, that doesn't matter because it allows the focus to stay on Grace and Hugh.
Recovering from an injury, Hugh is antsy and itching for something (anything) to do. When mysterious Grace rolls into town, he can't help himself from investigating. (Or talking. Or pushing someone's buttons.)
Nonstop action and lots of fun tension make On the Chase unputdownable.

Intrigue in the first few pages draws us into this story and keeps us invested in seeing the outcome. I had trouble connecting with Grace & Hugh at first because they almost seemed to be having a childish "I know you are, but what am I" back and forth bickering between them, but after they truly started having feelings for each other, the chemistry between them became believable and drew me in. Looking forward to more in the series!
Kaylee Ramay can't believe what her life has become! Because of witnessing something she wasn't supposed to see, she's now on the run for her life in hopes that the bad guys won't track her down and silence her for good. Now Grace Robinson, she is trying to keep a low profile as a kennel employee, but one particular guy isn't giving up on getting to know who she really is!
K-9 Officer Hugh Murdoch might be on mandatory leave after an act of heroism got him injured, but that doesn't stop him from zeroing in on the suspicious stranger in town ... and it doesn't hurt that she's gorgeous! When incidents start happening, Grace is left with no option but the spill her secrets to Hugh in hopes that he can keep everyone safe ... but when more is going on than meets the eye, they could all be in for the run of their life!

My Review: I have really been loving Katie Ruggle's books this year and have anxiously been awaiting On the Chase. The beginning of this book when we met Kaylee was a little intense, my heart was definitely pounding. Even with that frightening introduction, I didn't really connect with Kaylee. Hugh on the other hand was a fun character, even with his quirks and flaws. The banter and arguments between the characters kept up a nice flow throughout the book and really broke up the action in this one. And there was a lot of action, the life threatening moments almost never let up so the pages kept turning quickly. I am still really partial to Theo, Jules and the kids so I am glad that they were in this book quite a bit as well. It was a fast read that will have your heart racing with the danger and tension but will also have you laughing at the banter.
My Rating: I didn't connect with this book quite as much as the previous book but it was still a page turner and entertaining read. I give this one a rating of Three Paws and a Stump Wag.

On The Chase is a suspenseful, slow burning romance with main characters who would be charming and sexy one moment, and whiny and annoying the next. Kind of like real live people often are. They each have reasons for the annoying and whiny parts though as you’ll soon learn in their story. To be fair, it’s often easy to mistake whining in one’s head dialogue for simply trying to grasp the reality of a situation that is basically unbelievable to the logical part of our brains. That was my chosen way of seeing Grace aka Kaylee. She saw something she wasn’t supposed to see, she’d been attacked, escaped and now is living in fear of being found with a new name, new life and simply scared at every turn. When you look at Grace that way, it’s easier to be forgiving of her attitude at times.
Hugh knows Grace is lying her sweet butt off on just about everything she says. It’s obvious that she’s either in trouble or bringing trouble to their doorstep. He might be on desk duty right now, but his brain still works just fine. He’ll get to the bottom of the mystery that is Grace – and if he’s attracted to her as well, bonus points to find out she’s not going to bring harm to anyone he cares about.
One gunshot will change everything. And what they believe is obvious might just be the death of them if they don’t look at all possibilities.
I enjoyed On The Chase. It’s full of snark, charm, danger and questions. Plus it’s always enjoyable to run into people we know from other books or series once again. Hugh and Grace spend a lot of time denying their attraction. Because of that avoidance the teasing, snarky comments and pokes are flying fast and furiously. Once I got a handle on why Grace acted as she did I enjoyed her character. Hugh was a charming man if a bit nosy and overbearing at times.
Overall I got caught up in this story and if you enjoy Romantic Suspense then I believe you would enjoy this one too.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

Kaylee’s life is turned upside down in one night when she stumbles upon a gruesome scene. Afraid for her life she flees California with the help of Mr. Espinosa, the mysterious character who helped Jules (from book one) in the last book. Kaylee takes on the identity of Grace Robinson, posing as Jules’ old high-school friend. She attempts to stay low, but that’s easier said than done in the small town of Monroe, Colorado. Especially, when nosey cop Hugh takes an avid interest in her. He teases, and annoys, but he also makes Grace laugh and forget the seriously scary situation she’s landed in.
On the Chase was a non-stop thrill-ride! I felt like once Grace and Hugh escaped a close brush with death, another would be upon the them. It’s a mystery whether the threat comes from someone after Grace or Hugh, either is possible. Hugh wants Grace and Grace (begrudgingly) wants Hugh so of course, they stick together to figure it out. Their bickering was pretty funny, you can’t help but laugh when Hugh’s around. Even better, their banter would often turn heated: as in sparks flying, hungry kisses, and more! Loving this series!

After a wrong turn trying to find the restroom at her boyfriend’s uncle’s house, Kaylee stumbles upon three tortured men tied to chairs. After cutting them free and escaping the mansion, she goes into hiding in a small Colorado town. Her housemate’s boyfriend, Theo, makes her uneasy because he’s a police officer, but it’s his partner, Hugh, who seems to want to learn all of her secrets, that she really needs to watch out for.
The advance copy I read of this book is my first work by this author and it definitely won’t be my last! The plot was well thought out and the storyline immediately captured my attention and kept me engaged. The characters are so realistic and larger than life, they’ll easily have you invested in their story and outcome. This one starts off with a bang, then Ms. Ruggle really turns up the intensity! On The Chase is a suspenseful, adrenaline inducing thrill ride from beginning to end. You’ll be on the edge of your seat with your eyes glued to the pages as you feverishly swipe from the first page until the last. By turns sweet and comical then intense and anxious, this fast paced, riveting book is a definite must read!

I read this on a rainy day . I started reading at lunchtime and i just couldn't put the book down..
I loved the story and loved all the main characters. Unfortunetely this is book 2 in the series and even though it can read as a standalone I wish I would have read the first book but I will as soon as I get the chance and I will get my hands on the 3rd book in the series as soon as it is out.
I do highly recommend

I love Katie Ruggle’s stories, the characters are fun and realistic no matter what situation they’re in. Hugh is, of course, handsome, and he has a sense of humor that is not over the top. I wasn’t sure about Kaylee at first, but she grew on me fast. Together they made a fun couple to read about. It was a fast-paced, action filled suspense, with enough romantic tension to keep me turning the pages for more. I’m liking this new series.

On The Chase is a book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series, and the very existence of a unit containing three police dogs and their handlers in a town small enough to have only one diner honestly had me questioning the whole premise from the get-go. As did the idea of a girl who'd moved to California because she loves the warmth and sunshine happily settling down in a back-of-beyond Colorado snow town.
If you can get past those unlikely issues, though, there's a lot to enjoy in this book. Hugh and Grace have great chemistry, bouncing off each other with wit and snark, at cross-purposes until a looming threat forces them to trust each other. From that moment on, they get ever closer, fighting on the same team. Lexi, Hugh's K-9 partner, was adorable and deserved a lot more of her own storyline in the book.
Overall, an enjoyably escapist read. Four stars.

Just when you thought things had quieted down in small-town Monroe, Colorado...
Injured and trying to handle not being on duty, Hugh comes across a new woman in town, Grace (aka Kaylee) and knows there's a bigger secret behind he innocent eyes. But when the bullets literally fly around them the minute they get close...he's got a bit more skepticism than he thought.
Kaylee, now Grace, is in hiding from something she never thought she'd witness. Now the small town cop, Hugh, seems to be sticking by her side and she fears he's going to find out her secrets. Can she trust him, when she trust no one else?
Kaylee is a surprisingly strong character after her escape from a seemingly psychotic man. Throughout this story she sees so many different sides to Hugh that make her trust him more and more. Hugh isn't your typical romance hero; he's sweet alright but he's got this inability to be his own comedic relief. Amidst all the action you'll find yourself laughing at his sense of humor and then being swept off your feet when he rescues Grace over and over.
With help from Theo and Jules from Run to Ground, there's more to this story than just what Grace is trying to run from. Even sweet-talking Hugh can have someone after him...Can't wait for more!

Katie Ruggle's K9 crew is back and this time things are about to get a whole lot crazier. Kate Ruggle's newest book will keep you on your toes and have you wondering what will happen next and who is really up to all of the trouble that is going on in the small town of Monroe, Colorado. One minute you will be thinking that Kaylee's past has found her and she is the cause of everything but at the same time it seems like maybe not everything is adding up. Join the K9 crew as they welcome a new person into their small town and figure out what to do next.
Kaylee thought she met her Prince Charming, little did she know that her Prince Charming's uncle is up to no good. When she unexpectedly walks into something she has no business finding, she knows she needs a way out. And when she tries to get help from the police she finds out that you can't trust anyone. When she calls her friend Penny for help, Kaylee finds herself in the middle of nowhere, Monroe Colorado.
Hugh and his K9 Lexi are itching to get back into the field, but his leg injury is keeping he out for a few more weeks. But when Kaylee comes to town posing as Jules friend from school, Grace, he can't help but feel like she is hiding something. As he digs into her past, strange things keep happening to him and what he doesn't know if who ever is putting his life in danger is after him or Grace.
Grace can't help but notice Hugh and the sexual tension between them is electric, but is she willing to give him a chance? Or are the strange things happening around them running her scared? And if her life ever gets straighten out, is she willing to give up her old life just to give Hugh a chance?

A woman on the run, a cop on the mend, a story that engaged but didn't grab me - "On the Chase" delivered all that and more.
We met Hugh in the first book, "Run to Ground", and he was stern, hard-assed, and not easy to talk to. In this book he's occasionally charming, occasionally funny, frequently rude, frequently grumpy, and sometimes a stalker. He's recovering from injuries sustained in the first book and he's bored, bored, bored. The arrival of Grace provides him with both entertainment and a puzzle. Who is she really and why is she in Monroe?
Grace is on the run from a man who wants her dead. She saw something she shouldn't have and can't trust the local police so she takes off and ends up staying with Jules and her siblings. She's spends a lot of time feeling sorry for herself and the turn her life has taken. That's understandable, she did give up everything to stay alive, but it got old in short order.
I was disappointed that Grace gave Hugh a pass for his stalker behavior. She called him on it, but then turned it into a joke and let him get away with it. Now, if a guy picks the lock and enters my house uninvited, I'm not going to let him charm me out of reporting him. The fact that he's a cop makes his behavior worse, not better. Later he uses his lock-picking skills to break into a public restroom to talk to Grace. Again, she teases him about it and lets him get away with it. Hugh is also good at avoiding questions and deflecting which quickly became repetitive and annoying. Neither Grace nor Hugh are perfect but Hugh annoyed me more. His stalking behavior, his blase attitude about it, his refusal to take responsibility for his behavior all frustrated and bothered me. If he'd acknowledged his behavior, and been genuinely remorseful, I could have forgiven him. But as it was, I had trouble seeing him as the romantic hero. He was a hero in other respects, saving lives at risk to himself, and defending Grace when she was in danger. In most respects, he was a good guy. I just couldn't get past the stalking.
Grace, though she complained a lot, did suck it up and set about making a new life for herself. She becomes attached to Jules and the kids and makes friends with some of the local cops. She too was heroic, and reacted quickly in an emergency. She did have a habit of making assumptions, I wanted to smack her a time or two, but she was smart most of the time. She and Hugh generated a fair amount of heat but I had trouble buying the romance since I had issues with Hugh's behavior. I would have loved a good apology, maybe even a little grovel.
"On the Chase" had lots of action, poor Grace hardly had a chance to catch her breath. Both she and Hugh have targets on their backs and it's hard at first to know just who's responsible. One of the story lines seemed highly implausible though its intersection with the other story line was expected and a bit cliched. I liked the action, I held my breath several times, and the interactions with Jules and her siblings were enjoyable and believable. Theo's reaction to Grace was spot on and made me smile. I'm curious about the elusive Mr. Espina; I'd love to know more about him.
"On the Chase" had a disappointing hero, but had other engaging characters, was action-packed, and kept me reading. There were some twists and turns but for me the draw was the characters and their interactions. They were realistic, detailed, and stood by each other, no matter their feelings. I'm looking forward to the next book and hoping that out hero won't be a jerk.

Kaylee is on the run and ends up in Monroe, Colorado, a sleepy mountain town that had its own but of trouble. As she assumes her new identity, Grace Robinson, she's just trying not to draw attention. Hugh Murdoch is the local K9 officer who finds all the trouble. Being shot isn't going to keep him down and he's determined to figure out what Grace is hiding. Can they get through all the heat and near death experiences to come through stronger together?
This is the second book in the series, definitely spoilers to the first book, so if you're a must read series in order don't read this first.

2.65 stars
I really really want to like this book as I loved Hugh in Run to Ground. The opening pages are quite promising; what had the heroine run for her life. Although regrettably - as the story goes - I don't really like Grace's character. Even taking into account the shock and ordeal she's been through, her POV sounds too whiny and flippant, which is not so sympathetic. Added to that her constant giggling just grated on my nerve.
Now, I'm not saying no to a bit of humor. After all, Hugh has been the source of amusement since the first installment of the series. But it's just the trying-so-hard-to-be droll on Hugh part in this book that give the impression he's being the clown cop who just have to be funny. Every. Single. Time. Not too mention his stalking of the town's newcomer (Yes, Hugh. Whatever protest you sprouts, what you do is stalking. Cop's instinct or - even worse - sexual attraction or whatever).
As glad as I am that Hugh find someone to love and cuddle-up with, their courtship is way too rushed and unconvincing. Say, being the joint target from some evil group speed-up the bonding. But I just don't buy their sudden attachment to each other.
Oh, there's plenty of actions happening in this book, with fast-paced sequence that had Hugh and Grace understandably paranoid with their surrounding. But the sense of danger feels circumstantial and coincidental. Also, after the opening and the number of attempts on our MCs, it's just eye-rolling how the supposedly big bad villains are folding in one by one just like that. So easily.
The power for On the Chase is on the supporting characters; Lexi for sure. Her presence made reading about the heroine giggling and whining more bearable. The children from previous books - Jules' siblings - are fun to read, too. And then there's Hugh's other (human) teammates. Theo is still okay here and I'm hoping Otto's story will be more acceptable than this (and finger-crossed Hugh would tone-down his clownish antics).
Advanced copy of this book is kindly provided by the author/publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was pretty entertaining. I really enjoy books that have good banter between the main couple. It's more of the frustration, flirty banter if that makes sense. It had me laughing a lot.
In book one, Jules needed to save her siblings from her evil stepmom. She kidnaps them and has a "guy" create a whole new identity for them all and moves them to a new location where she falls in love with Theo, a cop. Theo and his partner, Hugh know Jules is hiding something, but Theo is so in love with her, he decides to not look into her past. At the end of book 1, Jules gets a phone call from the "guy" to let her know he's sending a woman to her who needs a new start.
In this second book, we get Grace, aka Kaylee's story. She has found out the guy she's dating is related to a very evil man and she has to run fast and far away for her safety. This brings her to Colorado living with Jules and her 4 younger siblings.
Theo and Hugh take one look at Grace and know she is hiding something as well, only this time Theo wants to know what it is in fear of her bringing danger to Jules and the kids. When Hugh suggest looking into her, Theo agrees.
This is where it got very entertaining. Hugh practically stalks Grace and interrogates her but he tries to do it subtly. It wasn't so subtle and Graces reactions were comical. When someone shoots at Hugh and Grace, she fears her past has found her and confides to Hugh and Theo about her past, but they soon learn it's Hugh who is in danger.
There is a lot going on in this book, between Jules and Theo's continued story, Hugh and Grace's story and the danger that seem to be stalking them around every corner. Instead of overwhelming the reader, it made for a pretty fast pace with enough romance and laughable moments to keep me entertained. I liked book one, but I liked this one even more. I'm looking forward to book 3! ARC provided by NetGalley.

Laugh out loud funny, "On the Chase" is arguably Katie Ruggle's best romantic thriller to date! Don't worry, her signature fast-paced plot continues to raise your pulse. But, expect to laugh aloud a lot also.
Ruggle demonstrated her wicked sense of humor in "Gone Too Deep," but in "On the Chase" she has gone full throttle to the point that I had to stop reading at times to wipe tears from my eyes. The exchanges between Hugh and Kaylee a.k.a. Grace are so hilarious I just cannot stop giggling.
Still, this is romantic suspense, so there are so many plot twists and hair-raising scenes. Gripping - that's the adjective that sums it all up.
Mixing comedy and drama for this thriller, Katie Ruggle showed mastery of her craft. She kept her light touch all throughout. As she brought her readers from scene to scene, Ruggle kept a tight storyline. She never lost a thread and tied them all up at the end while opening a new one for the next book.
A must-read! If you are going to read only one book this fall, then "On the Chase" should be it. The book is Rated M for Mature due to violence and sexual content.
