I have read all of Ms. Ruggles' books and I have to say this was my favorite. Why - the characters. Grace(previously known as Kaylee) and Hugh. I totally enjoy the interaction between these two leads. They are fun and frivolous with each other, and seem to really enjoy playing with each other. I have noticed in some reviews that some called this childish and silly. Well, I have been married for a long time, and we are still this silly with each other. It's called having fun and enjoying each other. When people are in stressful situations this is how some people act. That being said - the characters seemed "real" to me, and I really enjoyed them.
The plot was a bit all over and not as tight as some of her previous novels. But, as stated above, this was more of a character driven novel. There is still enough suspense to make anyone happy, and the plot does move in the right direction, it just meanders a bit along the way. The secondary characters are definitely present and Lexie, Hugh's K-9 is an important part of the story.
I will definitely continue to read this series, and hope for many more.
Received as an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

On the Chase combines 2 things I love: dogs and damsels in distress! Grace witnessed something she shouldn't have and is now on the run with a new identity. She gets a job working at the kennel where she meets Hugh, a local cop and his K9 Lexi. She is obviously skittish, but Hugh is pretty determined. And then they get shot at...
Hugh is immediately suspicious of Grace because he knows she is lying. Once bullets start flying though, Grace comes clean about why she is in Monroe, Colorado for fear that she has been discovered. But, there is a LOT more than bullets trying to take her out. Hugh, Theo, and Otto quickly realize that its not Grace being targeted at all, but Hugh. I liked Hugh as a hero. He has a bit of that boyish charm mixed with the badass cop vibe. It totally worked. Grace mourned her old life, and while she was a bit vapid before, I understand her struggle to adapt to her new reality. To go from having a great job, a Masters degree, and a beautiful condo to having a GED, a job mucking kennel stalls, and living with 6 other people allows a person a bit of despair about their situation. So, I didn't find Grace annoying because frankly I would have felt the same sense of overwhelming frustration.
I loved seeing the brotherhood between Theo, Otto, and Hugh and their K9 companions. They are a great team and have an odd twist of a bromance. They kind of mother hen each other and its a little adorable. While I enjoyed book 1, I liked On the Chase much more! There was a lot of action and danger which kept me flipping pages, and Grace and Hugh were adorable!

While Kaylee was dating a Disney prince, fancying herself falling for him, she encountered three tortured men in his uncle’s basement, helped them escape, was also forcefully detained by said uncle, escaped herself, ran from the police, and got a new identity and a new location.
Unfortunately that new location comes with a sexy, but nosy cop without nothing better to do, since he’s on sick leave thanks to a hole in his leg, but poke his nose into her business. Then someone tries to blow the cop away, someone takes a shot at them as they’re locking lips...And Grace, as she’s named nowadays, knows the torture-prone uncle with a Slavic (can you say trope?) last name has found her.
Reading this one wasn’t very pleasant. The heroine swung between two extremes—she either whined (mostly in her head, which made the reading of her “scenes” a special kind of torture) and bemoaned her fate (instead of feeling lucky about actually being still alive) or she acted like a demented teenager thanks to the teasing and/or banter from Hugh.
Hugh that I actually liked quite a bit in the previous book, but in this one turned out to be almost as annoying as the heroine. Hyper, obnoxious, and as far from funny or fun (although I guess Ms Ruggle wanted to portray him as such so he could take the heroine’s mind off her predicament) as he could get.
The romance was lukewarm at best and not-there at worst, I didn’t understand what exactly drove these two together except for looks. And the suspense was so convoluted, with yet another villain coming out of the woodwork, just to mix things up, I guess, keep the supposed mystery going, and keep the page-count high.
Everything was rather convoluted, there was too much going on with the two separate suspense sub-plots (one coming out of thin air, the second not actually having a satisfying run or resolution), and I disliked both the main characters.
Definitely not a pleasant reading experience.

Wow! Loved this book. The snarky banter between Hugh and Grace made me chuckle, even while they were dodging bullets and bombs. This is the second book in the series, and sadly I missed reading the first one, but was not lost. In fact, now I am more eager than ever to read the first one, and await the next one coming. Between drug running and mafia types, this book has a lot of action, plus the snoopy cops who are always underfoot, and their lovable dogs. Highly recommend this book, series and author. I have read several of her books before, and have not read a bad one yet. Enjoy this read!

This is the 2nd book in this series and I recommend reading the first one so you understand some of the things that are said and referred to from the previous book. This one covers the partner of Theo from first book, Hugh and Kaylee (who is referred to at the end of the first book). I really liked Hugh from the first one and couldn't wait to read his book. And I have to say this book didn't disappoint! Hugh is still recovering after being hurt previously and is bored out of his mind. Enter "Grace", who has just come to town to stay with Jules (from the first book-this is why I say read the first one LOL!). She needs to hide out after witnessing something absolutely horrific. This book had me hooked from the first. It made me laugh at so many parts reading the way they go back and forth. Hugh is protective, and just an all around nice guy. Kaylee needs that in her life, especially now! And then you throw the kids into that mix? I loved every bit of this book. It kept me completely interested from start to finish! I can't wait to read Otto's story!! Along with hoping Jules (and her family) can someday stop looking over their shoulders!

Charming, Cute, Fun, Action, Feisty story romance readers and mystery readers will love.
One the Chase is a cute fast pace romance with a great chemistry between the two leads that will have readers laugh.
Katie Ruggle was able to create a wonderful sexual chemistry between two characters using witty banter that seemed natural to the characters. At first Kaylee seems a little worldly but the author makes her grow up fast but also keeping true to the character. I romance and I love you are rushed but the authors give readers a chance enjoy the humor that comes with the romance.
The story moves along at a great pace keeping readers engaged but as a reader I could have used one less someone almost dies again. It was almost as if the author had them in danger so she could write certain scenes where the two leaders banter back and forth driving up their chemistry,
The ending was perfect because it shows you that even in world wind romance you still need time to get to know each other.
The kids from the first story are in the book and readers will enjoy the fun they bring with the story.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Sourcebooks Casablanca for the advance copy.
I can't wait to see who will be arriving on the doorstep next?

I enjoyed this story of Kaylee and Hugh. They were characters I really liked. I really felt badly for all that Kaylee had been through and was still going through. I liked the way she and Hugh were able to help one another overcome some pretty heavy baggage. The storyline was definitely an interesting one and I liked the quick pace of the story. The balance of romance and suspense was perfect. This was a good followup to the first book of the series.

Maybe getting shot at and being nearly blown up about four times within a week is a bit over the top. However, it really keeps you to the edge of your seat. So that works for me! Katie has done a great job in putting together a very fast paced story with a hunky cop (alias: Hugh) and a very scared girl, living under a false name to avoid being found by her boyfriend's mafioso uncle (Grace aka Kaylee).
Enter a cute K9-dog, a lovely family who provides shelter for Grace and a lot of bickering and banter between Hugh and Grace and we have the best combination for a great book.
If you've ever seen the Disney movie Aladdin, you probably recognize the scene, in which Aladdin and Yasmine are nearly caught by the guards. They turn to each other and say simultaneously: "They are after me... They are after you???"
This story kind of has the same feeling: both Hugh and Grace are being sought and someone wants to have them to keep quiet. When they are targeted multiple times, at an alarming rate, it is hard for them (and for you as reader) to understand who is after them. It keeps you want to read on and on, until you know who is the bad guy.
I will not spoil your read, by telling you who is after them. But of course Noah's creepy uncle has something to do with it.
Four out of five stars from me. And a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc in exchange of an honest review.

Katie Ruggle is on my auto-buy list, but this was not a favorite. I miss the most small town feel of her Search and Rescue series, and the feistiness of her S&R heroines. But most of all, I miss the stalwart alpha S&R guys.
Kaylee is running for her life but she, just like Jules from Run to Ground (book 1), gets sidetracked by a good looking K9 police officer. On the run from a shady businessman who viciously tortures people, Kaylee-now-Grace had to give up her identity and creature comforts for a ramshackle house and minimum wage job. Terrified, Grace literally trusts no one, but somehow fails so hard for Hugh that she reveals her secret in order to protect him.
For me, I just couldn't see an attraction to Hugh great enough to make me forget or even expose me to the nasty murderous bad guys. Sure, Hugh is good looking, loyal to his cop buddies, and has a dog. But he's also a nosy, pushy stalker to Grace - Hugh questions her to the point of tears, breaks into her house with the intent of going through her things, and even picks the lock to the women's bathroom because she was taking too long. I didn't find this charming and couldn't believe Grace decided to reveal herself when the cops were trying to figure out if an unknown assassin was targeting Hugh.
That said, I like just about everything and everyone else. Jules and the kids are adorable, and so is sequel bait Otto. Hopefully, his book will give some closure to Jules and the kids.
3.75 stars

You are always guaranteed a fantastic story by this brilliant author and this one doesn't disappointed at all. Wow what a book. Don't what to give anything away about this story but go and get this book. It's all what you want in a fantastic book and more. This author deserves more than 5 stars for this book but unfortunately It only lets me do that. Just stunning and very hard to put down.

OK, y’all know that I’m not totally in love with romantic suspense. But this book was on NetGalley and it has a dog on the cover. A dog! How am I supposed to resist that?
Well, Lexie the dog was FANTASTIC. Loved her to death. Just wish the rest of the story was as awesome as she was…
So, there’s plenty of stuff here that’s good. The pacing is great, the sexual tension between Hugh (quick aside: every time I read the hero’s name, I mentally pictured Hugh Jackman, which IS NOT a bad thing in my opinion) and Grace was fabulous, and the dialogue was fun and snappy. But…
Here’s what didn’t work for me:
1. I find it really hard to believe that a really bad guy keeps prisoners he’s torturing in his house. And even if he does, why would he invite company over? And even if he did keep people he was torturing in his house and invited company over, why would he ever let Grace wander around to find the bathroom on her own? I’d be like, “Oh, no, you can’t wander off to the bathroom on your own, sweetheart. Can’t have you stumbling into the pit where I’m keeping my enemies, now can I?” (You know...or something along those lines. Probably not those exact words. But I digress…)
2. I also find it hard to believe that a woman would abandon her life and assume a new identify (basically placing herself in her own kind of witness protection program) without first trying to find help in law enforcement. Sure, she went to one police station and ran into the bad guy’s relative, but why not try another police station? The FBI? Nope. Not Grace. She ran into one associate of the bad guy at the police station and decided to assume a new identity. Seems a little hasty and extreme to me.
3. Hugh’s behavior after meeting Grace was stalkery. I know it was supposed to be “cute” because he’s hot, but prying into a woman’s life when she’s asked you to leave her alone, letting yourself into her home, and picking the bathroom stall lock when she’s in there trying to get away from you is not endearing, guys. In the real world, any of these behaviors are likely to result in a knee to the groin, or pepper spray in the face. Just sayin’.
4. The tone of the book doesn’t match the blurb at all. The blurb makes this sound like a serious book. It was really more a rom-com romantic suspense. I kind of felt misled a little, as I’ve never read any of the author’s other books, and had no idea what to expect.
5. For a book about a K9 cop with a dog on the cover, the dog sure didn’t play a huge part in the story. She was there and she was awesome, but I would’ve expected more.
All in all, this one was a little “meh” for me. But don’t let that dissuade you, fans of romantic suspense. Everyone knows I’m a grumpy bitch about romantic suspense, so I’m probably not the best source of recommendations in this subcategory.
Full disclosure: We received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

So much promise - the blurb sounded intriguing but I just couldn't really get into this one. The beginning started out very fast paced but then the story started to drag - I felt like I was being told the same thing too many times in just slightly different ways. For example, Kaylee (who becomes Grace) has to give up her identity, education and standard of living when she is relocated to a small town in Colorado for her own safety. That's very tough - but she's constantly dwelling on that, complaining to the point that she seems ungrateful for the help she's getting from those around her, mainly Jules (who has taken her in, initially). This pattern of repeatedly telling the reader something more than once became distracting.
Other things that bothered me: why is Hugh (police officer with a K-9 partner) immediately suspicious of Grace from the first time he meets her? Hard to believe he's THAT good at reading someone he's just met. And why does he act like his friend Jules is making a bad choice in helping Grace? His character/reactions just seemed off. The dynamics and dialogue between Grace and Hugh just felt off and stilted too - especially in the latter part of the book.
And both of the MC's are in danger from unrelated circumstances? What are the odds of that? Seemed like a stretch.
So maybe it's me, but I just couldn't get excited about this one.
Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

I am seriously addicted to this latest series by Katie Ruggle. On The Chase is her latest and let me tell you it was some kind of awesome. I couldn't put it down !
The author hooked me from the first few pages when Kaylee's dream of finding her Disney prince landed her in some hot water. Bless her heart she did the right thing and then had to face one catastrophe after another for doing a good deed that left her on the run for her life. The good part was that it landed her in just the right place with a bunch of great people. She ended up in a small podunk town in the Rocky Mountains and immediately caught the eye of a suspicious but hunky cop. I remembered Hugh from the previous book. He was one of Theo's cop pals ; always quick with a joke and suspicious of everyone. Sparks flew between these two right away just not always the good kind. Hugh saw right through Kaylee's lies but it didn't stop him from being drawn to her. Their quick witted banter and antics provided more than a few laughs in this super suspenseful book. Trouble was chasing both of them as the author wove more than one big twist into the action packed plot.
I really liked this book. The characters were amazing, the plot was rich, and the excitement never ended. The author left off with an intriguing promise of the next book.

I loved, On the Chase. And can not wait for the third book in the series.
Kaylee aka Grace, is so lucky to have the easy going Hugh as her protector. A little less life threatening situations would have been nice though. His witty character is what keeps him from getting in trouble with his friends. I would guess that half the time they want to brain him. I know the Kaylee has fantasized doing just that. Between his annoying behavior, lock picking skills and his need to ferret out the truth. But then again those are also the things that drew her to him also. Go figure.

Totally got lost in this action packed romance. I enjoyed it much more than book 1. Stands alone.

I made the mistake of starting this book at 10 in the evening and then I was awake late into the night since I couldn’t put it down.
While this has the standard plot of heroine escaping a dangerous past by hiding out in a small town where a macho guy protects her while they fall in love, it was much more beyond that plot. Kaylee has fled a dangerous drug lord, the uncle of the guy she thought was her “Disney prince,” when she inadvertently discovered what a monster he was.
Well, Disney princes are fantasies. The reality is Hugh, a K-9 policeman in the tiny Colorado town. At first he is suspicious of her and knows that she is lying about who she is. She has to deal with having to flee a life that she enjoys and the success she had made of herself to hide out without money while fearing for her life. She doesn’t need some charming hunk of a cop investigating her.
What makes this book so fun is the relationship that develops between Hugh and Kaylee (or Grace as she is now known). She’s not helpless and, when danger threatens, she is as likely as he is to help herself.
And there is a lot of danger since, for some mysterious reason, a lot of people are trying to kill Hugh. So they’re stuck trying to figure out who is the real target and how to protect themselves and those who have befriended them. There is suspense and tension, but the developing relationship and snarky dialogue between Hugh and Kaylee is worth the ride and the missed sleep.

As this one opened I didn't think I would like it. Kaylee was a bit of a vapid, vain person, one who believed a bit too much in fairy tales. Then when she was on the run I didn't think she would make it, it seemed like she was mourning her old life and not thinking of how to deal with the life she had. Hugh wasn't much better, too much of a stick in the mud. I didn't like how he didn't believe Grace or trust that Jules wouldn't let a bad person in her life. Then there was his stalker like behavior, always picking locks to get closer to Grace.
It was only as bad things happened to Hugh and Grace was around that things started to pick up. It seemed like Grace handled things better than Hugh. I liked that in these crazy moments Grace managed to laugh. Grace even seemed to get along better with Jules and her siblings, making her seem more real and not a fake person. They all needed to stick together, proven when everyone was fleeing from Otto's house. Loved how Grace dealt with bad guy with a little help from one of the twins.
It was nice that everything was resolved, that Truman was caught, that Kaylee's troubles were taken care of and that Hugh and Grace have a bright future.

Well, there certainly wasn't ever a dull moment in this one. I enjoyed it, but didn't really connect with the characters. I liked them, but didn't feel like I knew much about them for some reason.
There also was a bit of an overload going on with both character. They were both being targeted and their lives in danger--for different reasons and by different people. I think it was a bit much.
I liked it. I just didn't love it.

Kaylee is dating a guy she thinks could be her prince. Her friend Penny has reservations. At a dinner party at her dates family home she sees something that forces her to run for her life. She ends up in a small town with another family in hiding. She attracts the attention of a super sexy cop who knows there is more to her story. Kaylee is ready to run but has no place to go. She finds Hugh, the cop, highly annoying but is still attracted to him.
I enjoyed the banter between Hugh and Kaylee, aka Grace. He was annoying in a charming way. There was danger and suspense, enough to keep you interested. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy of this book.
