Unfortunately, this book wasn't downloaded to my Kindle, therefore was unable to give it a read. However, I can believe it was most likely a wonderful read, filled with lovely characters.
I requested this book from NetGalley on a whim. There are any number of cozy series that I'm already reading and I didn't really need another. But I found one.
Maggie Doyle is a former cop. She found her husband cheating on her, reacted badly, and then accepted her aunt's offer to help run a movie theater/cafe in Ireland. Even though Maggie can't cook. Like, really can't cook. Instead of finding a relaxing life, Maggie is surrounded by her aunt's cats, she struggles not to alienate her aunt's customers while her aunt is getting surgery, and then discovers the town's evil queen dead at the local movie night. And the local garda seems eager to pin the crime on her aunt. It's up to Maggie to keep her out of jail.
There are some issues with this book, as there are many when an author is trying to build a series, but I really enjoyed Maggie and hope to read more about her.
This book came out April 12
Four stars
This is a great book; this is the first book in the Movie Club Mystery series written by Zara Keane. Maggie Doyle moved to Ireland to escape her cheating ex and crumbling career in the San Francisco PD. When the most hated woman on Whisper Island is poisoned at her aunt’s Movie Theater Café, Maggie and her rock-hard muffins are hurled into the investigation. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Dial P for Poison is a different genre for me to read written by Zara Keane but it has her same strong characterization and focus on detail that I have enjoyed in her Ballybeg Series.
I loved Maggie Doyle, her wit, her take no prisoners attitude and her insight into the other characters. She has strengths and weaknesses that make her seem human and approachable. She carries this story but there are some wonderfully quirky supporting characters to help her out. Secrets come out with twists and turns making this a first-rate mystery. Surely, Liam Reynolds will become more of an intricate part of the stories and Maggie’s life, at least I am hoping.
Not just fans of Zara Keane should jump to read this but all fans of mystery novels will enjoy it too.
Dial P for Poison by Zara Keane is a fantastic story. From the first line to the last, I was dazzled by the story and could not put it down.
Looking for a fresh start in Ireland, Maggie is anticipating some relaxation on Whisper Island.
While her aunt is having surgery, Maggie will be running the Movie Theater Café, the local hot spot in this tiny, quaint village.
Burning scones & making weak tea is the least of Maggie's problems when the local gossip queen meets her demise in the cafe.
Just because Maggie left her career behind as a police officer for the San Francisco PD, it doesn't mean she forgot how to handle an investigation.
When her aunt becomes the prime suspect, Maggie has no choice but to intervene, she refuses to let the bumbling garda handle the investigation.
In my opinion, this is a 10 Star story and I cannot wait to read more in this engaging series.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by Beaverstone Press & NetGalley.
I have read other books by this author. Usually, there is more emphasis on romance. This one was focused more on the mystery and getting to know the main character. I am looking forward to further mysteries and the potential romance with the man next door.
A new series from Zara Keane? Let me at it!
I have reading Ms Keane since I first stumbled across her with the Ballybeg series, and I have enjoyed everything I have read since, and Dial P For Poison is no exception.
I adored Maggie from when we first meet her. I like her take no prisoner, don't mess with me attitude. I love that she doesn't take any of the small town crap that is thrown at her.
There is a rag tag bunch of characters that are just a hoot. Some I just loved, some, well, let's just say I felt that may get what the deserve.
There were so many twists and turns in this whodunnit, that we are kept guessing right up until the last minute who our culprit is.
This book is just the right mix of humour, drama, mystery and suspense. There wasn't any romance in this story, which I was kind of expected. However, it looks like we are getting set up for some in the next book in the series, The Postman Always Dies Twice.
Can't wait to see what adventures Ms Keane takes us on next.
