I read this book, and while I did enjoy it I just couldn't connect with it. I just wanted more. I'm unsure if its because yes its part of a series and I haven't read all the others. I do like the authors writing, and her world creating is great.
I will definitely will be going back into the series, I am a mood reader and it could have been just that my mood.
I loved reading this book! I'm glad that I started this series when I did, because there was a bit of a wait for this book, and if I'd started the series sooner, I would've forgotten a great deal more than I did before beginning this book. So yeah! Because while it does stand by itself, it does reference the past books.
The mystery in this book involves another shade of magic and death. Having ghosts walk in dead bodies that aren't their own...yeah, that's new. And of course there were a few threads that connected to this mystery, and I enjoyed all the elements of the investigation, though the smear/bait thing that Briar did to Alex wasn't cool!
I really enjoyed having Briar back. I think it was mentioned, or maybe it's just my imagination, a spin off series with Briar. I would really like that, she's different than Alex, but she's so interesting and kick ass! I'd love to have some full time books starring Briar!
Oh, that ending! Her and Death's relationship deteriorated throughout this book. They had one or two good moments. But oh, that ending hurt! And yeah, we really need more of this series, because I couldn't stand it if it ended there!
This book was absolutely amazing, and I. Need. More!!!!
Walking corpses, crazy drama, heartbreak and family....Alex never has it easy.
Grave Ransom is a magic laced journey full of wyrd and grave magic wrapped up in necromancy- and Alex has a target on her back with a desperate necromancer trying to stop her from undoing all his work.
This book is filled with drama, action, and emotional distress (for Alex). Her eyesight keeps getting worse, her love life is a mess with a forbidden boyfriend whose name she doesn't even know and her ex boyfriend forced to be her shadow because he is charged with watching over her by the Winter Queen of Faerie. Now she stumbled into something she's never come across before- a walking corpse- and finds herself entangled in something much larger than one anomaly.
And she has her very own Faerie Castle and all that goes with it...that appeared in the mortal realm. Kinda. It straddles the two planes existing in both. But she has to keep it a secret from the outside world.
The world of Alex Craft is a mix of Laurell K Hamilton's Merry Gentry, Kim Harrison's The Hollows, and Darynda Jones's Charley Davidson books all tossed together to make something unique and totally engrossing. If you are a fan of any or all of the previously mentioned series than you'll love the Alex Craft novels.
Kalayna Price did a masterful job creating both the plot and the world in which her novel is set. I had read part of the series previously, but missed the last book. Inspite of that, I never had difficulty understanding what was happening in the novel, and this was done without a lengthy recap. This will be an excellent addition to the series both for dedicated followers as well as new readers. The story concluded without any cliffhangers, but still set up the next book. I look forward to the next installment.
Love Alex Craft and this series. It was a great installment and terribly hard to put down. I loved seeing Briar again. What a hard@$$. I was hoping for a bit more of Death and Alex, but that ended up going in a completely different direction that I guess I knew was coming but was hoping wouldn't. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
Full review to be published online in early July.
GRAVE RANSOM is a very nice entry to Kalayna Price's inventive "Alex Craft" series. Price is (so far) staying true to the tone of the previous books. The case this time...well, there's several things going on; but it starts when a young woman hires Alex to find her missing boyfriend. When Alex does find him, it's just in time to see him killed...and a female ghost pops out of his body.
Alex spends most of the book working with the magical crimes agent Briar Darque. There are lots of twists and turns as they try to get to the bottom of the mystery. There are also a lot of weird happenings that left me wondering, even as I knew it would lead back to the original case eventually. It just seemed to take an inordinately long time pulling the threads together. Still, it was all good and I enjoyed the read. It's definitely an inventive tale with very good wordbuilding.
It's taken me until this book to realize what is different about this series from other series of this type. There is really not much in the way of an overarching plotline to the series; there is just a new case to be solved each book. Sure, the gang is all there; and the vagueness of the love triangle, but these things are never deeply explored. It's just the case at hand. Not that this is a bad thing, mind you; it's just an observation. There is an event at the end that portends a change in the next book; but it's something that felt a bit tacked on to keep the reader interest.
It’s been a few days since I finished Grave Ransom, and I am still left with a little confusion on how I feel about this book. On one hand, it was great to see Alex and her magic back in the forefront of the story. The fourth left me a little wanting after such a long time away from Alex and company’s adventures. I put a lot of hope on stake for this series on Grave Ransom. It delivered for the pieces I had hoped to see come back into the central part of the story, but one particular scene has left me a little lost. Since I received this book so early, I don’t want to comment directly on the piece that I didn’t like. Instead, I will let readers reserve judgement on their own. The only comment I do wish to make is that this particular part seemed like a cop out on something that has been building for four books. The abruptness of it has left me somewhat jaded and unsure what to think going forward. Does it mean this is the last Alex Craft book for me?
No because I love this series and I want to see where it all ends just like any devoted reader. My only hope is that with the next book my questions will find absolution.
