Loved this book! Like a Scooby Doo episode in a book --for adults. I was absolutely hooked from the first page. I love stories about friends. Throw in a murder and I'm ecstatic! I had figured out a small part of the plot near the end but a few different twists kept me flipping pages way too late at night. One of the best books that I've read this summer so far and I've already read a few. I loved the location, the plot was unique and it was fun. I enjoyed the ghost story aspect of it too. Great book! I will certainly be recommending this over and over!
That Last Weekend was gripping and exciting! I loved the book and couldn't put it down!
For me, this book was very slow and I could not get interested in the story line. Too much going back and forth to rehash the story line.
Think Christopher Pike meets a cozy mystery and you'll have an idea of what this book is like:)
Laurel and 4 college friends reunite for a "girls weekend" at their favorite spot, Chateau du Cygne Noir. Not everyone is feeling great about it, though, as a tragic accident crippling one of them occurred the last time they were all together there. Because of what happened, it has been nearly 10 years since they have had a reunion. Bad feelings and accusations abound. As weird things begin to happen, the fright sets in. Who pushed Evangeline all those years ago? Are they looking to hurt someone else? Is Vangie out for revenge? Or could it even be someone else altogether? It was a fun, suspenseful mystery read, with details of the ladies' past being revealed a little at a time. It almost had a feel to it that it could have a sequel or even become a series. I enjoyed my time spent reading it, and would read more by this author!
PS--I love the cover!!
**Many thanks to NetGalley and Midnight Ink for an ARC for honest review purposes**
The first quarter of this book I found slow and dragging, it did not hold my interest. I was going to give up on it until I read a review that said it picked up about halfway through. The last half of the book was better than the first, although I didn't really find it suspenseful.
A decade after a tragic girls weekend away at their favourite place to stay, Laurel, Dawn, Ellie and Geneva all receive an invitation for a ‘reunion’ of sorts at Chateau dy Cyne, the place of the ill fated weekend away. All four reluctantly return to the Chateau, wanting a bit of closure and to stop questioning what happened back in the day.
Alongside Detective Boone who questioned the foursome for the earlier tragedy, they are joined by the innkeepers and the maid. After two murders in the Chateau leave them distraught and reaching for answers, the novel turns very Agatha Christie-ish. I did like the twists and turns toward the back end of the book and even more so, my mind switching between who did it the whole time. The reason I’m giving it 3.5 stars is purely due to the fact it took so long to get into to. Probably around 40% it started building up. That and the fact the start chopped and changed between characters so quickly I had to keep checking who I was reading about at the time as we were only just getting to know them.
4.5⭐️- a modern Christiesque novel. About a group of college students set ten years in the past and today! Who pushed Evangeline? Who crippled her? The police didn't find out ten years ago! But ten years later- they're back at the castle and this time it's a murder investigation- lots of twists and plenty of atmosphere. Great writing, tight pacing altogether an almost perfect mystery!
An enjoyable weekend mystery read for those who enjoy locked room cozies and murder mysteries. Fair warning there are some graphic descriptions of the murder victims, but otherwise it is a tame read.
5 college friends frequent a gothic bed and breakfast every year. Each of the women has a history with one friend in particular, Evangeline. One year Vangie is pushed off the fifth floor balcony and survives only to become a paraplegic. No one was arrested for the crime and the friends drift apart, divided by suspicion. Ten years later Vangie invites the women to come together, again, at the b&b to rekindle their tradition. The first night, however, ends in her death - someone finished the job they started ten years before.
Each character lends her voice to the mystery, gradually piecing together past betrayals and throwing in a few red herrings along the way.
I enjoyed this mystery because the reader can solve it if they pay attention to provided clues.
Fairly predictable but enjoyable none the less, a great beach read.
Thank you to Laura DiSilverio, Midnight Ink, and Netgalley for the advanced reader copy of this suspenseful book! Here is my unbiased review of it.
I am a fan of Agatha Christie mysteries, and "That Last Weekend" reminded me of an updated version of Christie's works (in absolutely the best way possible). A group of women who went college together have regularly celebrated women's getaways at a beautiful and haunting old castle. Ten years ago, their getaway trip turned nearly deadly when one of the women pushed her friend off the balcony, paralyzing her friend, Evangeline, for the rest of her life. The police investigate but are unable to determine which of the friends pushed Evangeline.
The novel picks up ten years after this horrendous event. The women receive an anonymous invitation for another weekend at the castle, and all feel torn about returning to a place with such emotional baggage. Reluctantly, they all show up at the castle, only to find that they are once again suspects in what is now a murder investigation.
I loved this book's twists and turns. I also liked that any one of the women there had reason to hate Evangeline, which kept me reading until the very last page. I loved the ambiance and setting of the book, too; the castle had a mysterious, dated quality to it, and the author's descriptions of the setting made the book and its atmosphere come to life for me.
In short, a fun, quick mystery that will keep you turning the pages!
AN interesting story about Laurel and her friends who met in college and are having a reunion at the old Hotel they used to visit. Mystery surrounds them as one of the friends met with a bad fate the last time they met and things quickly go wrong as someone is poisoned, some one else killed, things stolen etc. I enjoyed reading about each of the friends' lives and their relationships with each other.
Laurel Muir is returning to the Chateau du Cygne Noir for the first time since the tragedy. Once upon a time, the Chateau was where Laurel and her college friends would meet once a year for a weekend reminiscing about their college days. Laurel and her friends may be hoping to put the past behind them, but after a murder is committed, the friends have to admit that there is a killer at the chateau, is it another guest, or someone much closer than they can imagine? An atmospheric, moody Gothic that I loved
