You Will pay is a standalone novel by the popular mystery/thriller author Lisa Jackson. The story revolves around the disappearance of 3 people at a Christian summer camp and a prison escapee who has gotten away nearby.
The story was intriguing and intricately woven. I didn't have a clue what happened to the missing girls, or the camp employee, and the turns the book took near the end were ones I never would have expected.
My biggest complaint about the book was all the cursing--especially the words that dishonor God. I also didn't care for the sex scenes--I didn't think they added anything to the book, and I often wonder if anyone who isn't actively searching for erotica books, appreciates them.
I got about 50% of the way through the book and gave up. Literally, nothing happened. It was halfway through the book and the characters were still not back into the town they had been asked to go back to after the bones on the beach were found. It waffled between past and present in multiple perspectives. It was confusing whose perspective I was getting. I wanted to love this one, but I couldn't take it any more.
Another terrific thriller from the prolific Lisa Jackson. She never disappoints!! Non-stop action, engaging characters and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. I read this in one sitting! Can't give away any spoilers, but let's just say she had me at every turn. You will love it.
The opening scenes in Lisa Jackson’s latest novel ‘You Will Pay’ are gripping! A distraught female, a stormy night, a cliff edge; Elle, a teen counsellor at the religious summer camp based at Camp Horseshoe looks down into the foaming sea below. Pregnant and terrified she is about to end her life in a scene so vividly described it was like watching it played out in all its cinematic glory!
Fast forward twenty years…a human skull is found buried in the sand and police officer Lucas Dalton, former resident at Camp Horseshoe, is forced to revisit the mysterious events of the past that led to the end of Camp Horseshoe; a summer that turned into a missing persons investigation – of not just one, but four people!
So the story unfolds through a series of flashbacks between that fateful summer and the present day. The plot is a complicated one involving numerous characters and sub-plots, and Lisa Jackson does a sterling job of holding it all together; however, in the effort of masterminding the plot, the story for me loses some of its dynamism and the pull of the opening scene fizzles out.
In my (humble) opinion, the story was little overlong, but that said, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was very intrigued to find out what had happened at Camp Horseshoe.
I rate this 3 out of 5 stars.
I thought this was a dark and suspenseful story. Twenty plus years ago, two girls went missing from a camp run by an overzealous religious character. The story POV alternates between each camp counselor during the time of the disappearances and now in the present and that includes the detective Lucas Dalton who worked there at the time. BTW his father was the preacher who owned the camp. Some of the story is soap opera like, lots of bed hopping going on years ago, and I am tired of "all the religious leaders are no good trope". But still, I loved the twists and turns in the story and seeing which characters developed and matured and which ones stayed the mean girls they were in the past. It was fast paced and it kept me guessing with plenty of red herrings.
I mostly enjoyed this book. I found some of the characters a bit OTT (step mother sleeping with step son, her son watching) however these insights enabled the reader to understand how twisted these characters were. I found some of the things that happened a bit hard to believe, and this did take from my enjoyment of the storyline. At times I found it long and drawn out, and I did skim read these parts.
This book is full of adventure, lies, sex and secrets. The story jumps back & forth between the main characters being teenage counselors at a summer camp to 20 years later (present day).
The story revolves around the teenagers at the camp, sneaking out to meet up at night, secret romances until 2 counselors end up missing. In the present, a human skull is found. One of the childhood campers, all grown up and now a reporter, decides to solve the mystery of what happened at Camp Horseshoe so many years ago. As everyone gathers, secrets from the past are revealed.
There are plenty of crimes and twists in this book. Definitely worth reading.
Soooo good! Pulls you in from the start and keeps your attention. Switching characters from the past and to the present keeps the reader entertained and curious as to what's happening. I love the twists and surprises toward the end. I'm never able to figure it out. Ms. Jackson is one author who is always on my must-buy list. Her writing is outstanding and always gives me chills. It's the perfect bedtime reading for me.
Not quite as good as her normal books. Pace is unsteady and the plot seems reptitive which isn't like the twists and turns that I'm used to with her. Having said that, the character dynamic entertained me and kept me reading. Their development is well done, but I missed out on her creepy adventures.
I didn't enjoy this as much as I have enjoyed Jackson's other novels. It is darker than I like or maybe I just needed something lighter this week which isn't the author's fault. Intense.
After years of reading Lisa Jackson's stories, it never gets old. You will pay takes you on a roller coaster ride right until the very end.
Once I got started in on this story it became obvious I needed to take good notes. I love a good mystery and this story was turning out to be a big one. ***picture may contain mild spoilers***
Playing like something out of Crystal Lake (but no hockey mask or psycho to go with it) a Christen camp is terrorized. The counselors reeling for disappearances and injuries alike.
Ms. Jackson keeps the reader on their toes. Letting you think that you've gotten close, but then adding another tidbit that throws you onto another course entirely.
I have to say that this is one of my favorite books by this author. All stories have a place in my heart, but there are certain ones that are meant to stand out. This is one of those books.
Having read a lot of Lisa Jackson's novels I was really looking forward to this one. But it took me quite some time to 'get into' the 'now & then', however once I got past about 10% it was a great read.
It was just a little too long and drawn out at the end. But the beginning and middle saved it. 3 out of 5 stars.
I received a copy from NetGalley for an honest opinion.
I did not expect to see this story go the way it did as far as killers go. I thought I had it in the bag towards the beginning but I was oh so wrong, and I liked that.
We got back and forth between characters and what happened 20 years ago at Camp Horseshoe to the present. Crushes will never be forgotten along with the secrets that went along with it all from that camp.
It seems that everyone has a secret that they don't want to let out so how far will anyone go to protect their secret? This is suppose to be a church camp, but these teens were far from doing church things if you know what I mean.
When 4 people go missing 20 years before no one knows what happened because nothing ever showed up. So when a skull appears out of no where Lucas who is a detective but once a camp counselor wonders if it could be the girl who he broke up with so many years ago. His partner decides that she will need to call everyone in for interviews because something sounds fishy with the females story. What could they be hiding? There will be love found, love lost, a secret that no one ever thought of will come to life.
Now I love the way the author wrote about the camp and it being in Oregon I have never been there but I have always imagined it to be beautiful with the trees and ocean view it just screams to be used in a story. I did like how the author went back and forth between the present and past because it really put everything together and I think she did a good job.
Another thing I thought she did good at was building us up to figuring out who was the killer. It wasn't someone I would have expected it to be, and when I got to the part I was just like oh wow never saw that one coming!
I love this author's writing style and I plan on reading more from her. I think she can tell a story and keep you turning the pages.
Unputdownable.....Lucas Dalton investigates a 20 year old crime. Murder at a summer camp that is very personal.
Kensington Books and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of You Will Pay. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Lucas Dalton was just a teenager, working at his father's camp, when two female counselors go missing. 20 years later, Lucas is a detective with the Sheriff's Department, investigating some bones that were found on site at the camp. Coming back to town after all of these years, the remaining counselors reunite and reaffirm the pledge to stay silent about what they know. When murders start to happen, will Lucas and the police figure out the perpetrator in time?
I find it really hard to believe that, stemming from the small, temporary community of Camp Horseshoe, there would be that many individuals with personal secrets to hide. There was just too much going on, with numerous side plots within the same central story. Additionally, the plot was very transparent and the characters lacked both depth and dimension. The author never quite captures the feeling of I Know What You Did Last Summer or Friday the 13th, although the premise and the setting were very similar to both of those movies. That being said, You Will Pay is a good beach read for those who like mystery thrillers.
I was a little cautious when I started this book because the last couple by this author were real misses for me. It's been in my TBR pile for awhile and I finally bit the bullet and dove in.
I'm so glad that I did! It's a refreshing change of pace from her previous books that I've ready and I really enjoyed the plot (the fact that it was "fresh" to me was also a plus, I haven't read one with this kind of plot action)
Years ago, there was a religious summer camp set in the woods of Oregon where 8 camp counselors kept many secrets, from each other AND the police. It seems that 2 people went missing, one was thought to have committed suicide, and the other was thought to have been murdered by someone who escaped the nearby prison. Fast forward to present day, and human remains have been discovered in the cove they all used at camp. All the counselors are back as part of the investigation, when they all start receiving texts and messages saying YOU WILL PAY. It all has to come to a head? Doesn't it?
It's a fast, engaging, and entertaining read. I connected with the characters and I identified with their teen years, most anyone would. Worthy of picking up, especially if you want a quick weekend read.
Thank you Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
