Really enjoyed this series. Loved the southern aspect of the book. Can't wait to read the next book in this series.
Book received from NetGalley.
A cute quick little mystery that takes place on a hot Fourth of July in Tennessee. The book focuses on a party planner that ends up caught up in a murder mystery. I liked it but, I knew who committed the crime just a little place halfway in the book. Also, I have to admit I'm getting tired of all the murders that keep taking place in the cozy mystery genre, there are many other crimes that can be the focus of a book. so I think that made me like it a bit less. However, it was a very quick read and I do suggest reading the series if you're into cozies.
Vickie Fee goes it again! This book is laugh out loud funny and intriguing at the same time. The cast of characters continues to grow and the town with them. Definitely a five star read. Kept me up past my bedtime reading to discover whodunnit!
This books starts out with the bang of Fourth of July fireworks and discovery of a body in an unusual place. I like how bits of Liv's party planning business are interspersed and Di makes a great sidekick. Quick, entertaining read.
Another fun installment of the Liv and Di in Dixie mystery series! The characters are engaging and the small town setting is one of the things I love about cozies. In this book, Liv has her hands full trying to plan her "unique" mother's wedding but then the fiance is accused of murder. Liv and Di take it upon themselves (again) to ferret out the real killer before the nuptials end up taking place at the penitentiary! Lots off twists and turns which definitely made it hard to figure out whodunnit! I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
Liv McKay is a party planner in the small town of Dixie, Tennessee. She's very pleased with the way her Fourth of July celebration has been going - everyone seems to be having a good time, and enjoying the day. Well, almost everyone - town councilman Bubba Rowland has just been found dead in a porta-potty, shot through the rear of the receptacle, and with so many people attending the event, it seems Sheriff Dave Davidson has his work cut out for him trying to find a killer.
Liv McKay has a habit of finding bodies. Well, not really, but they sure have a habit of finding her, and this time is no different. While she didn't technically find the body of Bubba Rowland, she's thick in the middle of it, because the day after his murder, Liv's mother Virginia announces her engagement to Earl Daniels, who's been Bubba's business rival and a thorn in his side for years. When it's discovered that Bubba was killed with Earl's shotgun, which was in his locked truck, it looks as if the sheriff has the crime locked up as well. But with Liv's Mama pleading for her help to free Earl, Liv enlists the aid of her best friend Di Souther, and while the Fourth ended with a bigger bang than was what originally intended, their plan to unearth Bubba's real killer could send them both permanently underground if they're not careful...
What a delightful mystery to unravel. It appears that it's already solved, with no access to the murder weapon by anyone except Earl, and he's so forthcoming about that information that he's practically putting himself in the electric chair. But Liv believes he's innocent, and isn't about to have her mother's heart broken, so once again she enlists the help of her best friend Di to find out who got his gun and framed him for the crime.
It could have been a number of people who were attending the celebration, but sorting through the suspects isn't going to be easy, since there were so many there. And to top things off, her mama's now decided she wants Liv to plan her over-the-top wedding, complete with swans and a gondola. It also doesn't help that her sister Emma is dead-set against the wedding, and her father-in-law is acting strange to everyone. So will Liv be able to set Earl free or will Emma get her way and the wedding will be called off due to imprisonment?
What a delightful read this turned out to be. While I have enjoyed the series from the beginning, I believe this one is my favorite. The characters are rich and lively, their growth apparent as the series progresses. The interaction between them is realistic, and with just enough brass on Liv's part to be convincing without being exaggerated.
When we find out who the murderer is (because we know it just can't be Earl), it's believable and deftly done; the ending is satisfying and even a hint of the next book is given. Ms. Fee is a talented writer and in this book she serves up a real slice of southern charm, wit, and humor. I look forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended.
Party planner Liv McKay has put together a successful Fourth of July celebration in her hometown of Dixie, Tennessee. Everyone is having a good time until unpopular councilman Bubba Rowland is found shot dead in a port-a-potty. Many people hated Bubba but Sheriff Dave Davidson arrests Earl Daniels when ballistics match the fatal bullet to the rifle left in his truck. Liv and her best friend Di are forced to investigate Bubba's murder since Earl has just become engaged to Liv’s Mama. Liv tries agrees to help plan her Mama's grandiose wedding while trying to find the killer. Town gossip points to a shady real estate development linked with Bubba. This is another charming entry in the small Southern town mystery series.
I received this book for free from Netgalley and Kensington Books in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I found this rather plodding and characters not as purposes as usual
Book three in the Liv and Di in Dixie Mystery series. This is book had me laughing and shaking my head and the girls antics. At the beginning Liv's mom announces that her and Earl are now engaged. This is wonderful news until a councilmen in found murdered by Earl's rifle making him the prime suspect since they were also feuding with one another. Of course Liv has to clear his name in order to make her mama happy and for once everyone in town is encouraging her to do it instead of telling her to stop. Reading about her stumbling attempts to investigate while she also runs her party business kept me hooked until the end when the killer was revealed (which I admit I did not so coming which is pretty good). This book has strong characters, a good story line, relate able events, and finale just full of surprise which also made me anxious for book four. Great for fans of cozy mystery books that are set in the South. I really enjoyed it so it gets 4/5 stars.
This was my first encounter with Liv and Di, the two amateur sleuths in One Fête in the Grave by Vickie Fee. I really enjoyed the action, the details of the job of being a party planner, and the character interactions. Mama and her wedding plans were an absolute hoot! There was just enough humor to make me smile/laugh at just the right times. Based on this book, I have just ordered the other two books in the series.
I gratefully received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher and NetGalley, which in no way influenced my opinions, which are solely my own.
Another hit from Vickie, I love that I feel like her books can have themes specific to a season but are universal to the year. Her tips at the end draw me to wanting a party. The overall mystery is a great testament to why this author is a success, she gives the breath of life to her stories and makes them pop for the reader!
Vicky Fee's One Fete in the Grave is book three in the Liv and Di in Dixie Mystery series. This series is not the most in-depth if you are looking for the focus to be on a difficult to solve mystery. Often I like to read a book for the characters and setting with a little mystery thrown in. This book easily stands on its own. I love that it is a good Southern themed book. Friends Liv and Di are trying to solve the death of an unlikeable citizen of Dixie. The main suspect is Liv's mother's fiancee, and Liv is determined to keep the wedding plans on track. I love how Dixie and its citizens are authentically Southern. The book features plenty of sweet tea and proper Southern manners. For those reasons and more, this series remains one of my favorites!
I really enjoy cozy mysteries that are set in the south, despite the fact that I have never been to the south. This story is set in Dixie, Tennessee and focuses on a woman who runs a party planning business. The characters were all likeable with realistic quirks that made them more real. I enjoyed Liv and her family, including her mothers crazy wedding plans. The mystery in the story was believable and had enough twists to keep things interesting. The story starts off a bit slow, though that could have been because this was the first book in the series that I picked up so I was a little behind the curve. I think that someone who starts with the first book in the series will have more of a connection to the characters and be more invested to start with. The story did pick up and I found myself caring more about the characters as the book went on. I will certainly be checking out the other books in this series!
I'm sorry, I just couldn't get past the dead guy in the porta potty.
One Fete in the Grave by Vickie Fee is the third book in A Liv and Di in Dixie Mystery series. Liv McKay is enjoying the fireworks on the Fourth of July with her husband, Larry Joe when they hear a scream. Helen Maples (the screamer) is standing in front of a portable bathroom. When Sheriff Davidson and Deputy Horton run over and look inside, they find Councilman Bubba Rowland inside. Councilman Rowland is dead and looks like he perished from a shotgun wound. Liv was responsible for the town’s annual Fourth of July day long festival and is first to be questioned. Sheriff Davidson wants to know if Liv witnessed any altercations with the victim (and unsurprisingly there were a couple). On Sunday Liv and Larry Joe are invited to dinner at her mother, Virginia’s home. At the end of the meal, Virginia and her boyfriend, Earl announce that they are getting married. But the good wishes are short-lived when it is discovered that Earl’s rifle was the murder weapon. Virginia wants Liv to clear Earl’s name so they can move forward with their wedding. It turns out that many people wished Bubba harm. He was not a well-liked man and he abused his position on the city council. While narrowing down the suspect list, Liv keeps Virginia busy with wedding plans. Virginia has some over-the-top ideas for her special day (which includes swans and a Viking gondola). Will Liv find the killer or will her mother’s wedding venue be the local jail?
One Fete in the Grave is easy to read and can easily be a stand-alone. A Liv and Di in Dixie Mystery series is for readers who prefer novels that are humorous and light in content. I was a little bored by this one. The mystery was not complex and is easily solved (the clues are not subtle and killer stands out). Several things are repeated throughout the book. They include the events of the Fourth of July, Emma’s dislike of Earl, and the new development (a secondary storyline). Food descriptions seem to dominate the story. I really do not need a description of every meal Liv ingests especially since she eats from Taco Belles frequently (yes, I spelled it correctly). I give One Fete in the Grave 3 out of 5 stars. I prefer novels that have more depth, less repetition of information, and a mystery that is difficult to solve. If you prefer a light hearted, humorous cozy mystery, then pick up a copy of One Fete in the Grave.

I am new to Vickie Fee’s series, so this book was the perfect introduction: event planning a Fourth of July celebration with murder, ok that’s a great place to start. Who knew porta-potties were more than awkward and dangerous, but deadly? I didn’t feel that I was out-of-the-loop with the back story and character connections having not read the previous two books, although I am excited to do so. The story was still exciting, humorous, and kept me engaged, and I found Vickie’s characters, my favorite Di Souther, to be well developed and fun, not juvenile. The BFF status between Liv and Di is reminiscent of Lucy and Ethel, loyal, but they do get into trouble, and the relationship Liv has with her husband and the sometimes quirky of Mama and Earl are delightful. The southern setting of Dixie, Tennessee and details surrounding event planning play out in the background along with tips at the back of the book for your own Fourth of July Block Party (Invites, food with a bonus recipe for Southern Potato Salad, beverages, desserts, kids’ activities, entertainment, fireworks, and photos) and a Fabulous Baby Shower (decorations, brunch menu, bonus recipe for Cheesy Grits, games, party favors, bonus fender-reveal ideas). Martha Stewart watch out!
This was the first book I've read in this series and it was quite a lot of fun. Liv and Di are an engaging duo and the cast of characters around them make for a lot of entertainment alongside the murder investigation. Liv's party planning business is a great idea and she seems really quite competent - which isn't always a given in cozy crime stories! I had a few niggles - about how the murder was carried out mainly - but I'd be interested to read more in this series.
One Fete In The Grave is the 3rd book in the Liv And Di Mystery series. I highly recommend the entire series.
This is a delightful fun cozy read. The author has a wonderful fun way of describing the small town of Dixie Tennessee and the characters are especially humorous.
In this addition our protagonist Liv is planning a spectacular Fourth of July celebration. .During the festivities a city councilman is murdered and our trusty sleuth is on the case. It seems he had many enemies and the clues abound . Liv determines the suspect list and soon finds herself in danger.
I love the description of small town Tennessee and its unique characters. The story is both very humorous and a great sleuth. I look forward to the next in series. Thank you to the publisher for the advance reading of this wonderful series.
This is a great book; this is the third book in the Liv and Di In Dixie Mystery series written by Vickie Fee. Party planner Liv McKay has outdone herself this time. She’s put together an unforgettable Fourth of July celebration for the town of Dixie, Tennessee including breathtaking fireworks and an exciting Miss Dixie Beauty Pageant. Maybe a little too exciting. As the party is winding down, Liv s sense of triumph fizzles when the body of town councilman Bubba Rowland is discovered on the festival grounds. And now the prime suspect in his murder is Liv s mother’s fiancé, Earl, who had a flare-up recently with Bubba. To clear Earl’s name, Liv and her best friend Di burst into action to smoke out the real killer before another life is extinguished. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
I enjoyed One Fete In the Grave. One of the best things about the Liz and Di series is the southern feel that Vickie Fee gives this series and I wasn't disappointed. The story had a nice pace and the mystery had some nice twists and turns. I did not know who the killer was and was surprised by who it was. I laughed so much with the parts when Liz was with her mother and wedding plans. This book did not include Di as much as the first two, but the end makes me think the next one will have a lot of her. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great mystery and great characters. If you haven't read the first two it would be okay to read One Fete In the Grave you won't get lost. I look forward to future books in this series.
