I really liked the premise of the book. Fae in an urban setting? Love it! This story ended up feeling like the later Ania Blake, Vampire Hunter novels though. The ones where romance and sex overtake actual plot... That did detract from it for me :(
I adore urban fantasy novels, and I loved the mix with the detective-noir like setting. The pacing of the story was a little up and down (I have a tendency to skim if my interest isn’t kept), and while I loved Cassandra, I’m on the fence about Roan. I feel like some of his reactions weren’t quite in keeping with his personality. Some of the conflict seemed inserted just to keep the plot going rather than happen naturally, but the sexual tension is A+. Overall, I think this is a decent start to a series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
This book will grab you from the get go and drag you into a world beyond the one that we see every day. Your heart will pound as you track a serial killer with an FBI profiler who happens to be a bit magical herself. I can't wait for the next book!
So I had heard about this book from several authors' newsletters, but at some point I apparently decided not to add it to my TBR. Fast forward a month or so and I see it on NetGalley and decide 'why not, it's free'. Famous last words, should have stuck by my original decision.
The low rating for this book isn't because it's poorly written, but because of what I feel to be an overall lack of interesting plot and several tropes that I just cannot stand. If you've been following my updates as I've been reading this you'll see that this book and I did not get off on the right foot, and it actually went downhill from there.
I'm not going to put the following under a spoiler cut because in my opinion they aren't plot spoilers, as they have nothing to do with the murders or who is the murderer [but then again, neither does most of the book].
The book basically starts with the main character getting attacked and almost raped in an alley. Luckily for her a tall dark brooding mysterious possibly evil stranger is there to rescue her! Ugh. As the book continues Cass almost gets raped two more times, because apparently women almost getting raped is a great way to drive the plot forward. It wouldn't be as annoying if she at least got herself out of these situations but 2 out of 3 times she's saved by Roan [aka Mr. Brooding and Possibly Evil]. Speaking of, she spends most of the rest of her time lusting after Roan and leaning in really close to him so her nipples brush across his chest. Seriously, that exact sentence is in this book at least 4 to 5 times. I spent a lot of my time rolling my eyes and skimming.
And then as an afterthought she catches a serial killer I guess. The actual murder investigation takes up maybe like a fourth of the actual page space. Basically this sounded like a promising concept but I wanted urban fantasy, not paranormal romance. And this had way too much 'romance'. If that doesn't bother you then this might be for you but I just found it entirely lacking in substance.
This had all kinds of things going on - murder, romance, fantasy - that kept me engaged throughout the book! When one part seemed to become dull, a new and exciting dimension of the book was introduced to reel me back in. I could definitely tell there were multiple authors, due to the many colourful facets to the story.
Agent Cassandra Liddell has been sent to London to assist them in catching a Jack the Ripper copycat. Working as a forensic psychologist, she profiles criminals, and this type of killer is one for the books. However, when she is suddenly attacked by unnaturally strong men and rescued by an equally mysterious stranger, her job becomes a lot more complicated. Because Cassandra isn't completely human, and neither is Roan Taranis, the man who is seemingly both a hero and a villain.
Due to the multiple layers in this book, it took me a bit longer to get into than I would have expected. In general, I am usually most easily engaged by fantasy books, particularly those where the heroine is pulled into another world. In this case, I was probably more engaged with the crime fiction aspect of the book than the otherworldly beings or the awkward love connection between Cassandra and Roan. I didn't get a great sense of their chemistry, beyond the idea that he only lusted after her because of what she was. So while I enjoyed the book, I do feel some parts could have been more fleshed out to allow for maximum enjoyment. Nevertheless, it kept me reading, and it definitely left me wanting to read the next book now.
I'm not sure when the next book comes out, but I will definitely be in line to get it! This doesn't end on a cliffhanger too badly, though there are some major aspects of the story left unresolved. Hopefully the next installment will be available soon!
Thank you to NetGalley, Weapenry Co-Op and the authors for allowing me to read and review this book. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
I really enjoyed this story as it combines two of my favourite genres – fantasy and thriller.
If you like the popular FBI profiling TV shows, you will enjoy reading this book.
FBI agent and profiler, Cassandra Liddell is sent on assignment to London to help with an investigation into a series of Jack the Ripper copycat killings.
Things, however, aren’t as they seem. Cassandra starts seeing things that she can’t explain and she becomes aware that something supernatural is involved in these killings but how can she explain this to the local police without coming off as being crazy?
On her first night in London, Cassandra is attacked by two men, who definitely don’t appear to be human and is rescued by a lethally alluring fae. She cannot decide if he is a main suspect in the murders or if he is trying to help her. Does he have his own agenda? What does he want from her? Cassandra doesn’t know who to trust when the tables are turned and the police start to suspect her of being involved.
In her attempts to clear her name and find the real killer, Cassandra finds out that she isn’t all human. Her world is turned upside down and she has to fight for her life.
This is an exciting roller-coaster read that will hook you from the beginning and keep you enthralled until the end.
This fab writing duo of Crawford and Rivers works seamlessly to provide an entertaining and thrilling story. Agent of Enchantment is a great start to the Dark Fae FBI series and I can’t wait to read the next book. I found the characters riveting; the plot was very intriguing and left me wanting to read more. This is definitely a series I will be following as it is full of fresh ideas and interesting characters.
Agent of Enchantment deserves an entertaining 4.5 stars.
FBI agent and profiler, Cassandra Liddell is sent on assignment to London to help with an investigation into a series of Jack the Ripper copycat killings. Entering London, Cassandra soon discovers that the myths of the fae might be more real than she once believed because there is something behind these killings screaming supernatural.
The storytelling has one of those TV shows that are based on FBI profilers feel to it with a definite supernatural twist.
The team writing really works for Crawford and Rivers. Agent of Enchantment is a great start to the Dark Fae FBI series. I found the characters and plot solid with the authors leaving me wanting more. This is definitely a series I will be following.

I really enjoyed this book and I liked the flow of the characters. Looking forward to the next one and finding out more background. I also didn't notice that this was a collaboration, which is unusual.
Agent of Enchantment is the first book in this genre I've read in a while and I enjoyed getting back into the urban fantasy vibe again after a bit of a break from such tales. The story and characters caught my interest from the opening scene and held it until the end. In fact, several nights I read for longer than I should have, wanting to see what would happen next, and I'm feeling tired as I now write this review! The world building is great--I particularly appreciated all the snippets of London history--and the procedural elements came across well too. Yes, it does follow many of the classic urban fantasy tropes, but if you're a fan of this genre, that's what you'll be craving anyway, so I don't think that's an issue as there are sufficient twists to keep the reader's attention. Overall, this is a thrilling start to a new series and I, for one, would be keen to read more of Cassandra and Roan's exploits.
***ARC received in exchange of an honest opinion***
This book was a pleasant surprise. After a row of not very successful reads from Netgalley, I was so happy when I started reading this one, because it immediately grabbed my attention.
The story is different and also the Fae aspects in it. It's different than any other Fae books I've read. The style reminded me a but of the Fever series, but unlike the Fever books, the stoey in Agent of Enchantment actually moves forward in a good pace.
I'll definitely keep my eyes out for the next book in this series!
I had been eyeing this book for awhile and was excited to see it up for review on NetGalley. I immediately jumped on the chance. Cassandra has been called across the ocean from the US to help in London on a serial killer case. She works as a profiler for the FBI, and her expertise is just what they need. While helping them, Cassandra learns many things about herself and her past. But, will it all be too late to stop a killer? I wasn’t sure what to expect when I read this book, but I definitely got more than I bargained for. I loved this book. The writing was great, the storyline was interesting and kept me entertained from start to finish, and I loved the characters. I didn’t even figure out who the killer was until right before the big reveal. Was it perfect? No. There was one point where all one character had to do was blow out the flame to stop the bad guy (I don’t want to spoil a part of the book), and I have to say why did they have to call in someone from the US? However, the flaws were very minor, and I can’t wait until the next one of the series. I will definitely check out more books by these authors. Highly recommend! Thanks to NetGalley and Weapenry Co-op/C.N. Crawford-Alex Rivers for the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed. This exact review will be posted on both Amazon and Goodreads.
