This book is a somewhat direct sequel of the previous.

Writing wise, it's a lot less messier than White Seed. It still has an assignment sheet, which is still useless.

Character wise, it's the same, only Alon seems to have changed. Also, there are only two types of girls in this book- the badasses who use the word 'fuck' in every sentence and girly girls who are really cute and must be protected at all costs.

Story wise, it has the same skeleton as the previous book and I was able to predict plenty of plot points.

Overall, I didn't like this book and wasn't even able to finish it.

This book is about a group of scientists that go to a failed colony in another planet to discover why it failed.
First of all, I have to disclaim that I didn't finish the book but, since the plot is so similar to the first one, that probably doesn't matter.
This time, the book focused on Alon, a Shinigami that is also a geologist. Aside from that, reading this book made me feel like I was reading the first one all over again. The characters were exactly the same, in the same situation, just in a different planet. The fact that it focused on Alon instead of Kai didn't make the book seem different at all. In White Seed, I struggled too but ended up giving it a reasonable rating because the concept was interesting, even though the execution wasn't. This time, I can't do it. The concept was still there, yes, that's why I'll give it 2 stars but the story and the characters were exactly the same.
I had to force myself to pick up this book and I was bored in every page I read.
Needless to say, this book was not for me.

A great follow up to White Seed. However, the one perspective narrative took away from the story. As a reader, seeing what each person's desires and reasons for being on the star ship moved the story along in a way that this one didn't. There were at times where it felt repetitive; I understand he has PTSD, it doesn't need to be reiterated every chapter. It would also have been helpful to have a small recap of the previous book to remind readers exactly where the characters are. I felt a little lost in the beginning.

All in all, I am excited to read the third book.
