4.5 stars.
I was excited to review this as "Pull me Close" (Panic #1) was such a hit with me and the teaser for this one at the end of book one already had me hooked.
This book was clearly such a different book from the first one but I really liked the different spin the author added to it.
Matt and June/April's story was split into 2 parts with a year in between. Not wanting to add any spoilers to this review but suffice to say that the woman Matt knows as June suddenly disappears on him with no warning and no trace. All his attempts to find her fail until she finally resurfaces as April and from there it is a story that generates a lot of emotion. It is a love story based on lies and deception and as everything unravels there is a lot of hurt and pain involved.
I really enjoyed this book and I am becoming such a fan of the hugely talented Sidney Halston. I can't wait to see what the next book " Kiss me Back" has in store for her readers.
ARC received from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This story starts with a prologue that leaves me confused and wondering what is going on, that is until PART 1 starts. Matt! His story begins 18 months earlier where he first meets June. They have a whirlwind relationship that has some beautiful and gut wrenching moments. Their chemistry is undeniable but something is not just right and we find that out at the end of the Part 1. You'll have to read it to find out the middle workings of this amazing book. I don't want to ruin it for you. Part 2 starts out at the present time with April AKA June. This is where everything gets turned upside down and everything you thought you knew isn't exactly as it seemed but yet you read it and feel the emotions with them. You know something doesn't add up from part 1 that leads to part 2 so you'll have to sit back take the ride on a wild roller coaster of emotions. I can honestly say this the first book I've read by Sidney Halston and it won't be my last. I started it and couldn't put is down. I was so caught up in the leads story and the secondary characters where great additions. I can't wait to see what is in store for us next with Fox and Lola. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. I can't be more happy that I did. I'm grateful to Random House and NetGalley for giving me this opportunity.
Thrilled to read Matt and April's story early thanks to NetGalley.
You really should read Pull Me Close, book 1 of this series, prior to reading Make Me Stay to get a good grasp on what is going down in Miami and at Panic nightclub. I loved Katie and Nick (Nico) in book 1 and they were so easy to fall in love with due to Katie's illness and Nico taking care of her. As for Matt and April (June), it's a rocky road that is a journey of their love/hate/love relationship. I was thankful for this book being broken into two sections giving us the June/Matt love story, kinda sorta, and then the fallout and recovery of April/Matt.
April works undercover as "June" and is involved in the operation to take down Matt's nightclub and his father. June gets to know Matt and it is a intriguing because you know she undercover and you know they are falling in love in the middle of a huge catastrophe. Lose/lose situation.
Matt is heartbroken at the loss of June and spends months in search for the woman who simply disappeared when it all went bad. Never in his wildest dreams would Matt be ready to face WHY June left. Beyond heartbroken, Matt is furious, filled with hate and allowing it to spew from him.
When April is faced with the hate she is devastated. Finding herself in a situation reliant upon the one who hates her, April is eager to understand Matt and his feelings for various reasons. (Don't want to spoil it here!)
These two literally go through it together- from the highest highs to the lowest of lows- is there anything left to keep them together beyond shear hate? How does on get over the betrayal you feel? Will soul searching show that betrayal may not be a lie like you think rather an act of saving you all along?
There are not enough stars available for how wonderful this book was! I absolutely LOVED it and read it straight through in one sitting. The writing was witty and heart wrenching. The characters were complex and perfectly developed. The minute I got done reading this book I wanted to flip back to the beginning and start again. April (June) and Matt leaped off the pages and into my heart. I loved the struggle and dynamics to their relationship.and their passion was off the charts hot. Sidney Halston is right up with all of the great romance writers who know how to spin a fantastic tale and also write some the most passionate and sexy love scenes around. One of my favorite elements of this book was that the "secret" wasn't dragged through the entire story only to have it be the only thing that drives them apart in the end. I loved that things came out at a natural progression and that a surprising twist of the story line took place in the second half of the book. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book and know that I will be re-reading it over and over. Fantastic work!
I was so anxious for this book and Matt's story! We are left at the end of Pull Me Close with that WTF moment and I couldn't wait to see it all play out.
It's hard to tell you much without spoilers, but put it like this April is not who Matt knew her to be. We get the background of them coming together in the beginning of this book. And then she disappears with no warning, no note, nothing.
Jump ahead a year or so and things are way different. I loved the last half of this book! I did not see the little twist that would bring Matt to her. With all of his resentment, betrayal, and hate that had built up, I felt for him. I don't know how he got past it honestly.
I did love the book, but Pull Me Close has a special place in my heart. It was great to have Katie and Nick as part of this book. I must add that the covers of both books are stunning!
This book takes place in Miami, Florida. It centers around a bar called Panic and has been an iconic place for the wealthy and famous to be seen. It's owned by Matt Moreno, his brother Nick and their dad Victor.
Matt never wanted to run the nightclub so he's a successful lawyer during the week and then he helps his family out on the weekends. But Matt becomes more interested in the bar after meeting June Simpson. There's instant chemistry but June travels a lot for work so they spend what little time they have together not just having great sex but getting to really know one another.
But not all is as it seems. June disappears out of Matts life and he's devistated! He searches for her for over a year. But when she suddenly reappears she brings shocking news that will change his families lives forever.
This book is character driven. As I've come to expect from Sidney Halston she weaves an intriguing story that left me unable to put the book down! There is love, suspense, betrayal and the desire for forgiveness.
I highly recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Was so thrilled to have the opportunity to read this next in series book, While I enjoyed this book, it was not as intense as the first one, but a great addition to the new series.
Abandoned. The main character using cocaine habitually is a turn off.
Make Me Stay is the story of Matt and and April, aka June, and it's not an easy one. Split into two parts, this book introduces of to these characters when they're first getting to know one another as Matt and June. And then Part 2 comes and gives us Matt and April, and we get to see them discover each other all over again.
I'm usually not a big fan of books that have different Parts from different time periods but in this book it made a lot of sense why there was that time jump so I actually loved it. I was instantly captivated by Matt falling for April and thought there relationship was a pretty strong one, even though it all started as a lie. Their connection was just really evident and seeing them together had me smiling almost the entire time I was reading.
The second part of the story brought a little angst, and a lot more intrigue. It also brought on a twist that I did not see coming. I really wasn't sure where Sidney was going with it either, but then once it was all worked out I loved that she put it in the story. Vague enough for you?
Overall. I adored this couple and their story and I highly recommend reading it. I really don't want to say more than I already have because I think it's a book that's better if you go into with little to no idea of the plot. But seriously, read this book!
Told in both past and present tense, Make Me Stay is the second book in the Panic Series and follows the story of April and Matt. Everyone has secrets they're not proud of and wish like hell they could share. Truer words couldn't be spoken for April. Working undercover is one tough job. April loves putting the bad guys away, but the one thing she never planned on was Matt. Deceiving him and having to walk away was one of the hardest things April has ever had to do. But, now that the job is almost done, April is left hoping that she hasn't totally blown things with Matt. When the truth comes out, will Matt understand? Will Matt be able to forgive?? There is only one woman who has ever gotten under Matt's skin. Some might even say that Matt fell in love. However, Matt's life is about to be turned upside down. You see, the night everything falls apart at his club, well, that is the same night that "June" disappears without a trace. Months and months pass with no word from June, but Matt doesn't give up. He can't. And when fate makes their paths cross one more time, Matt will soon learn that there is more to June than meets the eye. Will Matt be able to forgive and forget the past? They say the truth will set you free, but in some cases, the truth only does more damage....
I have to tell you, when I first stumbled upon this book, I just knew I had to read it. I fell in love with the beautiful colors on the cover and could not be more intrigued by the synopsis. And let me tell you, I am so thrilled that I decided to pick up this book. From the moment our main characters were introduced, I couldn't help but be intrigued. Their story fascinated me and the chemistry from our two main characters had me dying to know what went wrong. Now, I will be first to admit that the first part of the book is paced a bit slower than I would like. There is a lot going on, and a lot of set up and explanation that needs to happen. However, that being said, the pace does pick up with you get to part two. From that point on, the story is fast paced and will leave you guessing.
Overall, I though this book was a great read. I enjoyed the characters and their story. I was intrigued by the plot and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I thought this book had some great romance and suspense. I loved all the secrets and lies and twists and turns. I though this story was a fun read with just the right amount of drama and sexy romance. This is my first book by this author and I look forward to checking out more from her in the future.
Make Me Stay by Sidney Halston, was a heartwarming exceptional second chance love story. Your heart will bleed for these characters, tears will fall down your cheeks, and Ms. Halston will be there to pick up the pieces.
With Matt and June, everything was based on a lie. Their love was chaotic, and ended with a bang. Now Matt want's answers. Why did April lie on who she really is, what is she hiding.......
These twists and turns left me shell shocked! I was gripping my kindle so hard my hands went numb. The road to forgiveness is a long one, but a happy one.
Sidney Halston has done it again!! In the first book in The Panic series (Pull Me Close) we got Nick's story, I was so excited in Make Me Stay to Matt's story (Nick's twin brother)!!! Make Me Stay is an addictive read that kept me up waaaaaay past my bedtime because I just couldn't put it down!!
Matt was completely head over heels in love with his girlfriend, June! That is until she vanished. He searched for her and it was like she never existed!! A year after his heart was crushed, Matt hears June's voice at the local coffee shop!! Knowing that voice, Matt ran and found her. Only she had red hair and dressed completely different, but her crystal blue eyes were still the same!! Seeing the petrified look in her eyes, Matt backed off. Quickly Matt learns a major fact about June she never shared...she's an undercover detective!! June's real name is April and as much as she didn't want to leave Matt, she had to do it for her job! When she left, April broke both their hearts! I love the crazy and unexpected ride Sidney Halston had planned for this couple!!!!!
I loved the premise of this book, it's a unique spin on second chance romance!! Sidney Halston combines suspense and romance brilliantly, but what I wasn't counting on was how deep she went with Matt and April! I think this is the 3rd or 4th novel I've read from Ms. Halston and I have loved every one-- most definitely an automatic 1-click author for me!! Make Me Stay is a 5 star book that is MUST read!! I cannot wait for the next installment in this amazing series!!
The review for ‘Make Me Stay’ is a hard one to write for sure; not because it’s a bad read (far from it), but because it’s so far from what I thought it would be that it has put me at a loss for words. Split into 2 parts, the first is the predictable flashback, a long, detailed recounting of the days after Matt Moreno meets June Simpson and how they fell for each other, even though June really isn’t who she seems.
Part 2, however, turned the entire book around with events that I didn’t see coming at all. But I was sorely disappointed not to see that same kickass cop I was hoping to see—this time coming into things in a blaze of glory—as the twist in the plot meant that the strong, take-no-prisoners detective had morphed into a broken, defeated woman who barely knew what she was doing. It was hard to reconcile this woman with the one we saw in the first part, but I had to constantly remind myself that this was contemporary romance rather than action or suspense. It’s an adjustment that takes for work for me, but reading about April (formerly known as June) and Matt rebuilding their relationship almost accidentally was engrossing to say the least, particularly so when they were now doing it for once, when no secrets were between them.
April and Matt were by and large likeable characters as well, which, in my opinion, made the book. Matt’s loyalty was indisputable, as was April’s own personal sense of justice and Sidney Halston writes both of them so flawed in a way that you can’t help but want them to succeed, even though the journey is an angsty one and paved with tears, anger and so much love. Even the epilogue doesn’t quite guarantee the perfect sunset, but it’s a realistic acknowledgement that the road to forgiveness is a rocky one, written with just the right glimmer of hope for the both of them.
I was given an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and independent review.
It's a pleasant change to read a romantic suspense novel which is not entirely predictable. I really liked the storyline. Interesting characters, lots of passion and romance and lots of angst.
