I really enjoyed "Good Sam" by Dete Meserve! Loveable, relatable, ambitious characters come together a mysterious "giver". Amazing love story, struggles, and build up! Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher for the review copy. All opinions are my own.
I liked this story but it was slow at times. The premise and the ending were all good with a few twists and turns that made me curious. I rate this book a 3.4
A look at a person who decides to be a good Samaritan and a journalist goes on a discovery to find out who.
This was an easy at a go kind of a read. Storyline was definitely different, giving an altruistic slant to the read with a dash of mystery and investigation. The entire story is ideally about finding out the identity of 'Good Sam,' the Good Samaritan
There are few niggles; the romance felt a bit off and I didn't care too much about the characters or writing.
Overall, an okay read..
Unfortunately I couldn’t connect with this one and didn’t finish it so I can’t honestly review it. This one just isn’t for me but I truly appreciate the opportunity and I thank you kindly!
This is a very good read. Not excellent, but I was very much entertained from the start. I thought the story, written from Kate’s first hand point-of-view, flowed well. I wasn’t bored, I had no trouble following her pace, and was actually annoyed when reality interrupted me. And I was also anxious to find out how it all would play out.
What made this book less than a stellar read was I could see where the story was headed. I could feel before the Good Sam reveal, that we had the wrong guy. I could see the motives behind all the characters actions and there wasn’t much to surprise me about how it would all end.
What saved the story for me was it was so easy to read and entertaining that I didn’t mind one bit. As a sucker for romance and a happy ever after, I was happy with spending the day relaxing with this (slightly) suspenseful romance.
A very entertaining mystery/romance! Kate's instincts about the identity of the person leaving $100k on doorstops around Los Angeles - does she trust them, does she not? This is a very clever little tale- nicely written and well plotted, with good characters in Kate and Eric (as well as in boo-hiss Jack) as well as nice vignettes of the people Sam helps. I very much enjoyed this quick read and thank Netgalley for the ARC. I'm looking for the next book in the series.
A very exciting read ! i rated this book 5 stars for its masterful writing and great plot. This is a exciting read !
A stranger has left 100,000 on the front step of ten strangers. No one knows who left the money or why. A local reporter, Kate Bradley wants to find out a who the good Samaritan is and begins to investigate.. As she delves into the recipients, commonalities and clues, she finds that good does exist in the world .
This is a well developed enjoyable read that captured my attention from page one. It is the perfect summer read and very uplifting.
Thank you for the ARC that did not influence my review. A excellent book.
Kate has worked all kinds of tragedies throughout the years working for an LA tv station. A good Samaritan has given out 10 different families 100,000 dollars. Kate starts investigating who the Good Sam is. A person comes forward but Kate doesn't believe the person who comes forward is truthful so Kate keeps investigating. This was a fun, exciting story with lots of secrets. Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a riveting read that kept me on the edge of my seat at the turn of each page!
I liked this book. I really did, but I just didn't love it. I love a story that has good versus evil and this story definitely did. I think that I really wanted it to be more about the good sam and the good works than about the love story.
Okay, so needless to say, I loved part of the story. The love story portion was far to predictable to me. I had it figured out right away. Characters were good, half of the plot was great, the other so-so. I just wanted more, a less obvious storyline.
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I first read one of Dete’s books, Perfectly Good Crime, when I won it in a giveaway. She sent it to me with a lovely note and I was won over! After reading all about Kate Bradley and her adventures, I realized I had to read Good Sam! By the end of the weekend, I had finished Good Sam!
I absolutely loved that Kate Bradley’s stories were about people doing good things! You can probably agree that usually when you turn on the news, there’s a story of someone getting robbed, shot, or attacked and it’s hard to watch. Although Perfectly Good Crime had actual robberies involved, it still led to something positive.
Kate Bradley is a TV news reporter who usually reports on tragedy- car accidents, robberies, warehouse fires- breaking, hard news. She is an amazing, determined woman, who at times puts her life at risk in order to get the best story she can. The details of her job were well described and it made me feel like I was on this expedition alongside her. The characters were well developed and I loved the modern romance intertwined within both stories. Both books have gripping storylines that just make you feel lighter when you’re done. If you are looking for a story unlike any other with mystery and romance, you will not be disappointed. Meserve has absolutely nailed it with these intriguing, thought-provoking novels and they will leave a lasting imprint on both your mind and your heart.
Good Sam: I enjoyed going on this journey with Kate and finding out who the anonymous donor was. I was a bit skeptical at first and then aggravated- you’ll find out when you read it. I thought I had it all figured out, but then PLOT TWIST!!! As the story continued, I was relieved to find that things aren’t always as they seem. P.S. I’m Team Eric!
Perfectly Good Crime: was so glad to hear more from Kate and see that Eric was still in her life! Perfectly Good Crime is another well- written Kate Bradley mystery that keeps the readers on their toes! I loved the Robin Hood aspect of the story- giving to the poor from the pockets of the rich. The expectations Kate’s father has of her are more pronounced in PGC and there is some serious tension from her boss, yet Kate stays true to her viewers and to herself throughout the entire process. The ones who benefited from the crime are thankful and hope Robin Hood continues his spree to help them receive help making ends meet. When the man behind it all is finally revealed, it is a twist I didn’t see coming and helps me believe that, at least in this story, good will always prevail.
Kate a news reporter for the bummer stories in LA is given a feel good story instead of her regular stories. I loved the concept of the story as we need some feel good stories in our lives right now. I really enjoyed Kate's character but there were times that I wanted to yell at her when she was being manipulated by her ex-fiance; Jack. The author did a great job portraying Jack's character and I hope I wasn't the only one who didn't like the guy. Kate meets Eric by chance and the story begins to have some twists and turns. You'll find love, loss, deception and a lot of other emotions in this book. At one point in the book I thought I had figured out who the Good Sam was but turned out to be someone else. That's the fun of mysteries is trying to read between the lines. I loved the book and can't wait for the follow up story. I received this book through Netgalley for an honest review.
I liked this book and I can easily see it becoming a Hallmark movie. I was eager to find out who Good Sam was and the reason for giving. It is a pleasant read and a nice summer choice for a book club or to toss in for quick read while traveling. This is one of those books that are nice to purchase and jsut leave somewhere for another reader to pick up and enjoy. will be reading the next in this series A Perfectly Good Crime which is currently available for an amazing price on Amazon.
Some elements of a mystery, some of a romance. This book features a main character that somehow manages to be naive and cynical at the same time. I did find the storyline of Good Sam very interesting, but the romance was just too much, too quickly for me. I guess I'm just not a romance kind of girl! This would be a good book to bring along on the beach. Relatively short and easy to digest, it should be a light enjoyable read that many will be able to finish in one sitting.
Kate is used to covering the "bummer beat" for her station. She's who you see on TV when disaster strikes. It's what she's good at. When her boss lobs more of a feel good story her way, she's dismayed. She doesn't think this is the kind of story that'll lead. She can't deny that she finds it intriguing though... local residents have found bags of 100,000 dollars on their porch. Gifted anonymously, no one has any ideas where they came from or why. As more lives are changed for the better, the story explodes. The person dubbed "Good Sam" is famous without anyone knowing who he is!
As expected, some people are eager to claim that the money came from them. They're all disproved, random people looking for praise and attention... until someone who actually has the means to gift large amounts of money comes forward. He even has proof.
As for the romance... there's a couple of contenders for Kate's heart. She wrote off her ex months ago, but she's starting to look at him in a new light... which throws a wrench in her promising new flirtation with a handsome firefighter. Neither will stop her from pursuing this story.
I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Lake Union Publishing, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.
I liked this story. It didn't knock my socks off but it was a good romance/intrigue. When Kate is given the assignment to cover a story of people finding money on their porches she thinks it's a punishment since she usually has the top hot stories. What starts out as a fluff story evolves into a political crisis and human love and interaction. This is book 1 of a potential series. As a debut novel this is a good start to hopefully a long writing career.
This was a fabulous story! I enjoyed the twists and road the characters took. I highly recommend you read this book!

Thank you to NetGalley.com for the opportunity to read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
So, this is a thinly disguised mystery that’s really a romance novel. Kudos for an original plot, a red herring, a little drama, and a predictable ending. Unfortunately, the book just doesn’t know what it wants to be and that’s where its weak. Since it is not a mystery, there’s no real suspense as to who the Good Sam is. Since its not a romance, you don’t really get into Kate’s emotional bank to find any backstory. How about a flashback scene to finding out at your engagement party? Then maybe I’d care.
What I loved: A book based in L.A. has my heart since its my hometown. Okay so the Westside is my hometown and I probably have never been to any of the places mentioned (outside of Griffith Observatory – I’ve been there..once), I still love L.A. Maybe the author should have chosen a different station identification number though. Channel 11 is Fox LA and they are usually 4th in the news ratings…
What I didn’t love: Outside of no emotional connection to the heroine, there wasn’t much I didn’t love about the book.
What I learned: How to survive a raging river for when we get more than 3 hours of rainfall.
Overall Grade: B-

Good Sam is a very well written book. I loved the plot of an anonymous benefactor who leaves $100,000.00 on people's doorsteps. A really good feel good book.
Good Sam is an easy to read clean mystery/ romance written by author Dete Meserve. Thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the advance copy.
