Mr. Rich by Virna DePaul is the first book I've read by this author. I'm impressed and pleasantly surprised. The beginning of the story started out really good and I was intrigued by the characters, but towards the middle it turned into more erotica and less romance, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I just wanted more depth to the story and plot development. Overall though it was a cute little story and a light read. I appreciate the opportunity to read the book and Thank Netgalley and Loveswept for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
From the blurb I thought I would really enjoy this read. However, I just can't read any more. I'm 39% in and already skimming large sections so I'm marking this one as DNF.
The reasons it's not working for me are the characters. I can't figure out whether Julia sounds more like a stalker or an immature girl. Her internal monologues over her 'crush' are driving me insane, and that's without her stalker-ish behaviour. I mean, what sane adult does all of the things she does after just seeing someone in a shop? She sounds like a young teen who has never seen a hot guy in her life.
Unfortunately it gets worse. Kevin only adds more drama that is unnecessary as the gay best friend. He's stereotypical, over the top, and adds to the childish narrative of giggling high schoolers stalking a crush.
If all of that wasn't enough, the romance looks like it's heading in a cliched and predictable direction: two guys, jealousy, Julia has a hidden past, and Sebastian is hiding something too. Oh, and she's also the curvier type of girl who can't believe a hot guy wants to date her. I have no idea if I'm right with my assumptions, but I can't read any more to find out.
I'm sorry, but this is a relatively short book and there are too many stereotypes and cliches for me to continue. It's been a while since a book made me feel this strongly, but I really can't enjoy the writing in Mr. Rich, which is a shame because the blurb really sold it as a book I would like.
Sorry, but it's a DNF.
Very refreshing to have the rich guy hero be the vulnerable one, for once. I liked that Bastian had to chase after Julia and that he had to battle his own insecurities to do so. Bastian gave good grovel.
What I didn't like were the romance cliches. Julia's flamboyant gay BFF who drooled after Bastian and told her to chase her dreams. The other convenient man to fuel Bastian's jealousy. Julia's "secret" broken past. It felt like a lot of this was pure filter to drag out the story.
Also, I wasn't a fan of the forced humor such as the icky description of the old man using the cotton swab in the supermarket. The crude attempts at humor were pretty jarring next to Bastian's later, more tender pursuits of Julia.

Julia was likeable and I did like how she put Bastian in his place right away, I enjoyed their banter. It was an easy read and kept me interested although was a bit predictable.
Mr. Rich delivered and left me pleasantly surprised in the end. The book reached more depth than I initially anticipated and delivered some great characters and a sexy romance. Julie and Bastian's initial interactions were adorable and well written. The twist on Bastion's story was a welcome change from the norm and I found myself sucked into his story right away. Some of my favorite romances have that great push and pull throughout the whole story and this one delivered on that. I loved that Julia was unsure where she stood a lot of the time but that Bastian would come through and help reassure her of his feelings and place in his life. The author delivers some wonderfully passionate love scenes and fantastic witty banter. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more by this author.
An easy, short read. I liked it but I didn't love it. The story kept me semi entertained. But ultimately fell a little flat for me.
This author for me is a hit or miss and this book for me was a miss. Not to say someone else might not enjoy it but it just was not to my taste.
It is written very well and the plotline kept me interested. I just felt that the book centered on a topic that I would rather not read about and I was teased about prior to reading it. I also did not really understand why Julia was so terrific that Bastian wanted to date her since he met her.
This book centered on two major characters, Bastian, a rich, playboy type and who is superhot with a great butt, and Julia, a supermarket sampler girl who doesn't think she is very attractive, and is a music college drop out. Both have a big secret that has really affected and changed their lives and they don't share with the other.
Julia, just didn't seem anything but ordinary and so I had no idea why Bastian liked her and wanted to ask her out. They don't even chat until the one day he collapses at her feet. Bastian is very sick, he has Lupus. It was in remission until the day he collapses at Julia's feet.
The book is mostly about him having Lupus and how he does not want to saddle Julia with a guy that is sick. He doesn't call her when he gets an attack and she thinks he is dumping her until finally she decides to go see him.
For the first 20% of the book we don't see Bastian except for his collapse and it was kinda dreary. Julia does not lead an exciting life. So I really did not understand what Bastian saw in her. Once they meet, I understood it but before taht he lusted after her, well I did not get that.

Julia "steals" Big Sexy's wallet when Bastian collapses at her work. She returns it (after looking up his pics on line...d!ck pics) and he's jerk. Not only to her but his rock star client who thinks Julia is hot. He goes back and apologizes and asks her out. They start a relationship with many bumps in the road including a separation cause he's once again a jerk. He again apologizes, and we get a happily ever after.
Now what about his brother and the rock star. Can they both get a book?
Something in this book never clicked for me. Julia works at a grocery store handing out samples. She is crushing on a guy who is obviously rich from his suits. He passes out in the grocery store and she calls 911 to help him. In the meantime she keeps his wallet with his info.
It was an awkward beginning, and middle to me. I liked the ending (but to be honest that was a little off for me too).
Julia works in a store handing out samples, she hates it, but she needs to pay the bills. She notices this gorgeous guy and her and her best friend call him "Mr. Sexy Big". She knows she has no chance with him because he is way out of her league, but that does not stop her from fantasizing about him. Bastion, does notice Julia, and he thinks she is gorgeous, when he finally decides to meet her, he faints, because he sick. She ends up with his wallet, and when she drops it off, he is a jerk, shattering her imagination of him. Bastion feels bad, that he was a jerk, but was intrigued because she put him in his place. As they start there love affair, he breaks her heart because he does not want to hold her back. Eventually everything comes out, and they get there HEA.
