I’ve been reading this series out of order, so I know there were things mentioned that I didn’t fully understand, but it is written in such a way that a reader is still able to enjoy the story even if they have missed something along the way.

While there is magic in this book, the author adds his own spin to how it works and what it is capable of doing. As far as the magic goes, there are without a doubt things that I missed by not reading the books in order. Part of that includes what Anna’s grandmother was doing. I got the gist of it, but I will need to read the books in order to understand that.

All of the characters seemed to have backstories that intertwined at points and really helped explain some of their actions. There were not many side characters, so the reader is able to focus on the connections between everyone and see the characters develop as the book progresses.

I hadn't read the other books in this series, but I still loved every second of this book! Can't wait to read the whole series.
