I ordered this book for the Portsmouth Public Library. It was well received with the patrons there. The graphics and images really made it stand out on the shelf.
This is a good guide for your use of essential oils. Well laid out and easy to read. It's also easy to find what you're looking for. As the mom of a toddler, I wish there was more information about using essentials on and around children. Especially the contraindications! Otherwise a wonderful resource.
Great entry level book on essential oils. Most of the info could be found by doing a simple a Google search but if you want it in book form, this is a good option.
Like all of DK's books, this one is full of clearly written factual information and beautiful illustrations. It was helpful to me, as a beginner with essential oils, to learn what each of the essential oils can do and how to properly use them.

Beautiful cover! Wonderfully illustrated and well-organized. As a Holistic Health Coach, I am fascinated with essential oils! This is a tremendous resource for anyone wanting to incorporate oils into their life. Everything is broken down and explained. It makes a great coffee table book as well. The pictures are vivid and the format pleasing to the eye. The book itself exudes positivity!
I've always been interested in essential oils, but other than the lavender oil I add haphazardly to homemade bath bombs, I know absolutely nothing. So when I saw this book on Netgalley, I jumped at the chance to review it.
First of all, it's gorgeous AND comprehensive! There's a great introduction to what essential oils are, how they're collected, and the difference between organic and synthetic. Each oil is then given a page or more to their personal qualities (medicinal, therapeutic, etc), and how to use them safely. The last third of the book contains recipes for essential oil blends, lotions, and bath bombs/tonics/melts.
I feel that I have a better understanding of essential oils in general, and which ones I'd personally like to try. I'm also definitely going to try out of some of the bath recipes! My only (small) complaint is the section on heart health and stress is located in the Men's Health reference section. Heart disease and heart health is not a gendered medical issue, and in fact currently affects 1 in 4 women in the US.
Thank you to DK and Netgalley for an ARC.
I received a PDF from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I am new to essential oils and this book has peaked my interest. As we have come to expect from Dorling Kindersley, it contains visual pictures and the page layouts are very well done too. This makes it a very pleasurable experience to read.
The book is very comprehensive as it contains info about what essential oils are, how they are extracted and how they work and how to use them. The book also gives you guidelines also how to select essential oils when buying. Furthermore, the book contains a part that list the profile of over 80 essential oils. Each page is like an info card of the respective oil providing info of the plant's origin and it's uses. The oils are listed alphabetically by their botanical names. instead of by common names This may lead to frustration for the reader as they will need to use the index to find the oil they want to read about.
All in all, it is great reference and a great book for beginners and intermediate alike. This book will be useful for many years to come.
I highly recommend this book.
I have always been interested in aromatherapy and essential oils. Lots of great information and some fun looking recipes to keep busy for a while here! Thank you!
Essential Oils is a beautiful book. We can't keep it in stock.
The information in this book is amazing and the illustrations are beautiful.
It is a must have if you are in the market for making your own oils.
Stunning, in-depth resource guide for all. A definite addition to a health and beauty collection.
This is by far the best book I've ever read about essential oils! The book is engaging, informative, and practical for beginner essential oil users. The photos are beautiful, the format is very user-friendly, the recipes are simple enough, and the description/usage of each oil is thoroughly beneficial. Thank you to Netgalley and DK for allowing me to preview a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I plan to purchase a print copy of this book for our library and for my home use.
Beautiful book with loads of good information on the use of essential oils, The book was organized in an easy to use manner and was written in a very understandable way.
The sections discussing what are essential oils, use of, storage of and safety with essential oils were all concise and useful The large A-Z of Essential Oils guide is a great reference. An essential book for anyone interested in essential oils.
This is exactly the kind of book I need to get me started on my essential oils journey. While I know there's so much free information on the web, it also comes with strings attached (MLMs! Scary opinions!). This book shares the information in a way that is easy for me to reference as needed. Additionally, it's a great resource to have as I explore the multitude of uses for essentials oils, including the why and how.
First off, this book or GORGEOUS - beautiful full-color illustrations make reading useful information about the various flora extremely enjoyable. I've always loved using essential oils so I was mesmerized by the in-depth explanations and instructions for creating your own mixtures, safely and successfully. This will definitely be my new go-to reference for all things essential oils.
This is a definitive guide to essential oils. Everything you need to know is here and more. I enjoyed the descriptions of uses of each oil, its origins and many properties. A excellent guide that I will refer to time and time again to make my essential oil products. Very well done. Excellent helpful guide.
5*
I love essential oils and have been using them for more years then I care to count. When I saw this book listed on Netgalley.com I had to apply for it. Essential Oils are so much more then a bottle of stuff that smells good. The oils can be using for so many different things from beauty, to illness, to cleaning your house, and yes to smell good. There is also several ways they can also be turned into poison like Cats should not be around Tea Tree oil it can make them very sick or even kill them. Some oils are fine for taking internally. You need to make sure the oil is food grade though, some oils will also turn to poison if taken internally so you should really know what you are doing before you do it when it comes to Essential oils.
Although I do know a lot about Essential Oils and their uses there is always room for more knowledge and new recipes. This book if filled with everything Essential Oils. It tells you how to use the different ones safely and effectively. There are recipes for making new smells, and for adding to cosmetics, shampoos, healing rubs and more. The book tells you the best way to use each oil, what its main purposes are and even tells you where the oils come from.
This book is a wealth of information. I am so glad I ran across it and even more glad I read it. This book should be used as a reference book. Don't just read it once and shelve it. You will want to pull this book out time and time again. With all the information in it reading it once I guarantee you will not remember everything the book teaches.
A super handy little book! I only just recently started getting into the essential oil craze so I wasn't sure where to begin but this really helped! Tons of "recipes" for what to mix for what ailment. Loved it'
I'm a huge fan of Dorling Kindersley or DK books from way back to when my son was little. They produce books with the best pictures and the most fascinating information. I've never really read an adult DK book before Essential Oils: All-natural remedies and recipes for your mind, body, and home.
This book is published in the UK. What that means is that it is not compliant with what the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) says that oil producers in the USA can claim that an oil does. That isn't a bad thing though. The FDA hasn't made any rules about the medical claims of essential oils ever. Why? It could be that big pharma in the US doesn't want their profits to be usurped by the alternative health industry. It could also be that the FDA would be completely overwhelmed by the number of essential oil companies out there. Most of which aren't producing a quality product. There are probably only less than a handful that you could trust and even so I would be very careful.
This is a 257-page book that is chock-full of fabulous information. It starts out explaining what essential oils are and how they work. If you're going to use them therapeutically, you should understand that they can be very powerful and can effect people differently. You should also understand that not all oils are what they are labeled. Some are cut with chemicals and contain very little actual essential oil. This is why it's important to know your source. The book continues on with information on how the oils are extracted and where they come from. I understood extraction methods but I loved the illustration showing where most of the oils come from all over the world.
The next section of the book contains 88 profiles of individual essential oils. I have heard of many of them but there were others that I wasn't familiar with. The profile describes where the oil is extracted from and some information about the plant in general. Then the maladies that it's good for and the best way to use the oil to help those maladies. I like that there are warnings on the oils that might not be good for a pregnant or breastfeeding woman or someone who has seizures. There is a little picture key at the top of each description that lets you know what the recipes for that oil are. For example, yarrow has recipes for a massage oil and steam inhalation on the page so the illustration at the top of the page lets me know that.
The next section is labeled Base Oils but we call them Carrier Oils in the US. This section explains the (fatty not essential) oils that can be used to dilute the potency of the essential oils. These are oils like coconut oil, shea butter, almond oil, and cocoa butter. There are carrier oils that I'd not heard of before and I'm not even sure that they are available in the US but they would be worth looking into. Some carrier oils have their own healing properties. Coconut oil is antibacterial so you might want to use it for certain recipes.
The final sections include information on how to blend for fragrances and beauty as well as recipes for listed medical conditions. Again, this book isn't FDA-compliant in the US but that doesn't mean that the information isn't good. I made one of the recipes for a medical condition that I was dealing with and it appears to be doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Plants and oils have been used for centuries to heal. There is an extensive Glossary and Index to help you find what you're looking for if the Table of Contents doesn't help you.
I highly recommend purchasing Essential Oils: All-natural remedies and recipes for your mind, body, and home to keep in your oily arsenal. It's a fabulous reference tool and I will continue to use it with my essential oils.
Brilliant book. I started learning about essential oils and can't get enough. This book is very practical.
