I enjoyed reading this book. It was sweet book with just the right amount of drama that It intrigued the readers.
I enjoyed the vulnerability and the friendship between Cam and Vee.
Unfortunately, I am no longer interested in reviewing this book on my blog. Thank you for this opportunity.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan-Tor/Forge and Tor Teen for the advance reader copy, Love Songs and Other Lies by debut author, Lisa Pennington, in exchange for an honest review. Oh, did I love this story; I also think this awesome debut is a YA story but can also be put into the new adult genre since the characters are college age. Vee and Cam’s story was heartbreaking, breathtaking, and I rooted for them to hang in there (despite Cam’s past) and prosper as a couple. Pennington’s use of THEN and NOW as well as Cam’s or Vee’s point of view was critical in establishing what was happening (took place) in the past as well as the present for the main characters. Vee’s progression was great to read; she was an attentive granddaughter, funny, great singer and songwriter and good friend to her band members. As she becomes friends with Cam, the reader is treated to her snarkiness, wanting to just be friends with Cam, despite her growing feelings. I liked the way as time went on, she shared everything with Cam and wished her honesty led him to break down his terrifying walls of blame and self-hatred. The music element of being in a band, writing songs, and how the music moves Vee and Cam was so exciting; I loved the tour, the tightness of the band members, especially her best friend, Logan. The drama of the tour, what went down between Vee and Cam, kept me mesmerized and turning the pages. This is a great beach read, teens will love the music, band aspect, as well as the reality TV drama in this emotionally charged second chance winner!
Excited for this one! The sample was not long enough :) Music books with romance are definitely my jam.
The narrative goes back and forth from the start of Vee-and-Cam to present day. We don't know (for quite a while, actually) what happened between them but we know it must've been bad because I'm pretty sure that if Vee could straight up murder him, she would.
It's interesting to see because it started so well and ended so, SO badly. But even so, it's impossible not to root for Vee and Cam (separately and together).
This is a story that will break your heart in places but the ending? Well. You'll love that.
well this is a very sweet preview! But I'm not sure how to rate it so I'm going to say 4 stars, as I usually need the entire story to be able to my opinion of it.
"It's a tiny lie...
...Those never come back to haunt us, do they?"
I am so invested in this music-infused storyline. Told in alternating POVs that flash between the past and the present, this contemporary left me feeling hooked. I was only able to read the first 5 chapters via this excerpt, but I can't wait to get back into the story come April.
Had to buy the book so I could finish it! Wished I'd had the whole thing.
Love Songs and Other Lies is the story of Vee, her best friend Logan, and Cam her love interest. Vee and Logan have been best friends since grade school. With the exception of one summer when they tested the waters as something more before returning to being just friends. When Cam moves to town and starts school with them, he joins Logans band just to meet Vee. Although she didn’t know that.
The story is told through flashbacks that are juxtaposed against current time (a couple years later) when Logan, Cam and their band are on a tour bus being filmed in a battle of the bands type television contest. Logan asks Vee to join them but doesn’t tell her that Cam is traveling with them again. In the first few chapters we realize that Cam and Vee have a history and one that didn’t end well and they are going to hash it out on live television.
This excerpt was fantastic! I totally forgot that I was not reading the entire book and when it cut off I wanted to scream in frustration. I will definitely be looking forward to reading this entire novel when it comes out in the spring.
I was given a copy of this excerpt through NetGalley for my honest opinion and it was honest.
Such a fantastic book! The story was so well told! I fell in love with the characters and was hooked by the story straight away!
It was told in such an interesting way, moving from the past to the present and from two different POVs.
The plot was original and well thought out! I can’t wait to read more books by Jessica!
Virginia/Vee has known Anders and Logan since elementary school. Logan is Vee’s best friend. Vee had dropped everything to join a band tour with Logan for three months. The tour would also be televised. Logan’s band is calle Your Future X. When Vee gets to the buses they will be on Vee meets Reese who is the bassist. Vee has heard a lot about Reese and Logan quickly tells Reese “she is like our sister “ when he makes some come on to her comments. Logan had told Vee about the job that would save Vee from summer break with her parents. Then Vee finds out she had not really been hired but as far as the band went she was their manager. Vee almost left to go back home but didn’t want to call her parents for a return ticket and Vee decides to stay with the band. Then he comes toward her - the last person she wanted to see - Cameron. Cam. It had been almost two years since Vee had seen Cameron. Logan knows how to push Vee’s buttons. Logan and Vee had a friends with benefits thing for about two months but only making out. Vee didn’t want to go farther and decided to end that relationship before it ended up ruining their friendship. But now Vee wasn’t always sure what Logan met when he was using sarcasm, Cam had heard Ginny/Vee talking to her grandmother and then he seen her at school eventually Vee and Cam got involved with each other. Cam’s parents had died in an accident and Cam had received enough money to live on. He had been living in California but after his parents death he moved to be close to his grandmother who was in the same nursing home as Vee’s and that is how he heard her voice and wanted to meet her. Cam had wanted to start over with no baggage so why he had moved from California. Anders had advertised for needing a new guitarist and cam went to audition and joined the band. Vee had been the manager of the band Your Future X and wrote most of their songs.
I liked this book but i had very mixed feelings about this book. It just didn’t flow right for me. I don’t know maybe I missed something along the way. I liked the story yet it ended rather abruptly for me. If Cam wanted to stay out of the spotlight , why did he go with the band that was to be televised? I like they treated Vee with respect. There did seem to be unresolved business in this book. I did like all the character sin this book. But as i said I had mixed feelings about the book.
I was approved for this preview MONTHS ago on Netgalley, but I was holding off on reading it until a little bit closer to the release date. When the release date of the book was pushed back I delayed some more as who wants to read a few chapters of a book, only for it to abruptly end, then spend almost a year waiting to find out what happens?
Not me.
I can barely wait five minutes for the kettle to boil without losing my patience.
However, it's January.
The book releases in April.
I thought I'd be safe enough reading the preview now... And okay, the fact it was sitting on my Netgalley list as unread for so long was annoying me.
But I thought I really did think it'd be ok!
And I was wrong.
I was hideously, horribly, unforgivably wrong.
Waiting five minutes to read the rest of this book is five minutes too many, let along four and a half months!
What the hell was I thinking?!
I got five chapters.
Five perfect chapters that sucked me straight in and made me feel giddy.
Five chapters that presented an addictive romance and story.
Five chapters that teased me with a story I have a feeling I'm really going to love.
And that is a problem.
Want to know why?
Because it doesn't release until APRIL 24th!
Bah humbug to my first 'read' of the New Year.
Well, bah until the 24th of April and then it'll be hello my precious.
Here's hoping the rest of the book lives up to expectations and that spring comes quickly!
the initial part is very well written, captivating characters, good plot, sorry that I did not notice that it was just a sample, I get distressed when I like a book and I do not read everything.
I realized that after I requested this that I probably was not going to read it. I regret requesting it cause it did sound interesting when I read the summary.
Preview excerpts are such a tease.
As an avid reader I really try not to read teasers because once I have a taste of a good book, teasers leave a bitter flavor on my tongue. Looking forward to reading this one fully and in 1 sitting
I really enjoyed this excerpt and look forward to reading this book in it's entirety.
I absolutely loved this excerpt!! I cannot wait read the book when it is released!! It is definitely up my alley in regards to the subject matter!!
I cannot wait for this book to be released! This excerpt teaser was good and bad. Good because I loved it. The characters and story were so much fun! Bad because now I have to wait to read the entire book until April! I want it now!
It was just okay with me. But I'm looking forward to more books from this author.
Sooo good! Love the characters and the writing is wonderful. Would love to review the full book!
