A stunning look at the natural beauty of the
coastal island
The Photographs in this book are beautiful and really capture the beauty of the island. You can tell the author has a real love for the island and the inhabitants. There is some text but the photographs are the highlight. This book will make you want to visit. Enjoy this armchair travel.
Absolutely stunning photographs in this book. The pictures are so vivid it almost makes you feel like you are seeing all the wildlife and nature in person. i would love to go the Assateague Island and see all the wonder of this place in person. Mark Hendricks has done an amazing job of introducing readers to the beauty with is stunning photos. I also enjoyed the short stories he added throughout the book. I never knew this Island used to be part of the mainland as part of Ocean City Maryland until a storm in 1933.
This is a fabulous book. Everyone who loves nature and wildlife should have a copy of this as part of their library.
I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.
Natural Wonders of Assateague Island by Mark Hendricks is a wonderful collection of photography and information which is currently scheduled for release on June 28 2017. Assateague Island, primarily known for its population of wild horses and pristine beaches, is a magical place. Yet few people have experienced all of its natural wonders. Noted wildlife photographer Mark Hendricks has spent years exploring the barrier island and shares his passion for the area's incredible biodiversity in this stunning collection of more than 190 color pictures. Through his lens and words, he captures truly rare moments with some elusive creatures, including a river otter, snowy owl, black stallion, and the threatened piping plover. From the windswept beaches to inland forests and through all seasons, this personal journey is relatable to all who have visited, or wish to visit, this enchanted island off the coasts of both Maryland and Virginia.
Natural Wonders of Assateague Island is a visually and intellectually stunning work. I love nature and learning new things about places I thought I knew, and places I never even knew existed. This book told me so much about somewhere I have never seen and only heard about once or twice in passing. The photography is stunning and the book is worth looking over just for the images collected here. I really enjoyed that amount of information that was included, some in large block other in single sentences unobtrusively included in the corners of the related images. This is a book that I will go back and revisit both for the images and information- and be able to share with my animal and nature obsessed daughter.
Glorious book, the photography is beautiful -what a superb island. I must admit that I had very little knowledge of where was Assateague Island - now I would really love to go there.
Not only are there many beautiful photos in this book, but there is quite a bit of interesting information. For me it is mostly about the photos, the light, the wildlife and the scenery - this is a book that anyone interested in art or photography will really enjoy.
This is a very interesting book about a location I've never heard of and I'm sure many haven't heard of either. It is filled with some really beautiful photographs of the animals that you might find on the Island as well as locations. Especially loved one of the photos of a deer, the silhouette of a wild horse at sunset and fog through the trees.
It is evident in this book that the photographer truly appreciates and loves Assateague Island. The narrative expresses a quiet acknowledgement that this is a place to be treasured. Sadly, most of us cannot visit even once but through this book we can glimpse the rare beauty of nature and wildlife on the island that must be protected. Whether you have visited or not you can find a hint of the peaceful sanctuary of the island by viewing the pictures and reading the words in this book, Natural Wonders of Assateague Island by Mark Hendricks.
This lovely book by a noted wildlife photographer is a testament to all the beauty that is Assateague Island. From a tiny, almost invisible grasshopper to rarely seen birds and mammals, Hendricks has beautiful pictures of them all.
While the horses are the most well-known animals in this magical place, the author shows us what an incredible variety of species of animals and plants live here. His text and pictures made me long to visit again.
It's a must-have book for lovers of the place.
The majority of the photographs are beautiful. The history of Assateague is fascinating. To see the only paved road is intriguing.
What an absolutely gorgeous book! The pictures are astounding. Colors are vibrant and rich. The photographer captures the essence of his subject. I get a clear image of Assateague island from all the pictures in this book. It is truly a work of art. The narrative is also great. So much interesting information is presented in an easy to understand manner. History, culture, interesting tidbits, geography etc are all included. In addition, the reader gets a glimpse into the mind of a photographer. I can read what he was thinking and why he does what he does. I can imagine what it is like to be chasing after the illusive subject... hours and hours of waiting. This book is beautiful. Great for a coffee table.

Assateague owes it fame to ponies, perhaps mostly to Misty and her family. There is, however, far more diverse wildlife on the island then simply horses. Marc Hendricks book on the island showcases this quite well. According to his text, Hendricks has made a study of Assateague for a great many years. And while there are beautiful photos of the ponies, there are a great many beautiful photos that details the Sika, birds, and water life of the island.
The books chapters are photographer’s journey – in regards to various animals. Hendricks is able to connect the reader to the capture of the photography. And yes, one of the journeys does detail a pony, a black stallion to be more exact.
The true selling point of the book is the photo, and these are quite lovely. If you love nature, the ponies, or have been to Assateague, this is an ideal book.
Being a shameless West Coaster, I saw the title "Natural Wonders of Assateague Island" and immediately thought: where's that now? Never heard of this place. I had to Google it - apparently it's an Island off Maryland. Maybe I should learn more East Coast geography, but hey, I live in Oregon, so....Anyway, I'd never heard of this place, so I was fascinated - an island with horses, yucca, box turtles and sea otters?! Why have I never heard of this place, it's beautiful! I kind of want to go there now, which I'm sure was the book's intention, but hey, it worked for me. I know so little about the East Coast and I've never been there. The photographs are absolutely lovely.
