It was a short preview that started out with instalove and I wasn't happy. It got more interesting after that, but then ended. Guess that's the point of a preview though.
Well guys, I just finished a preview of Roar's first four chapters and decided it probably won't be for me. Even though the storm magic sounds cool, 80% of this excerpt focuses on sexual tension between the narrators. And they keep being allowed these ridiculous liberties, such as throwing knives at each other in the practice yards, even though they're both royalty. Would any royal guard worth his salt allow that to happen?
For another example: the girl's mother lets the guy into her room! At night! ALONE! That's just not how medieval royalty treated their unmarried heiresses. And a chaperone attended the pair earlier in the book, so this unlikely scenario jarred me right out of the romance.
So, I mean, there's one good obstacle between the narrators, but I'm sure love will find a way. Meanwhile, I prefer to skip the endless physical descriptions of our chaste heroine and the brooding hero. I like more true conflict--and more of an actual fantasy adventure--to make things interesting. I'm just bored, unfortunately :/
However, I just may not be the target audience, here--I think readers who enjoy romance or NA Fantasy like SJM's ACOTAR might really enjoy this one.
Thanks to Cora Carmack, Tor and Netgalley for the free eARC!
The opinions I share are completely my own and in no way compensated for by publishers or authors. If you liked this review, you can read more of my speculative fiction reviews on my blog.
I just loved this excerpt and can't wait to read more.
At first I didn't thought that Cora Carmack, who I know as a New Adult writer, would be able to write YA Fantasy, but from what I read so far I simply loved it.
I really want to read more from this story and hope to be able to read the whole book soon.
This review is for an excerpt/preview only. I CAN'T WAIT TO READ THIS BOOK! From to get-go, Aurora is a heroine worthy of my time reading. I can't wait to find out if she's brave enough to take on what she needs to in order to steal magic and avoid an arranged marriage.
I didn't realize this was a preview excerpt. I was hoping to read the entire book, so I won't be reading this. My apologies for the confusion.
I didn't realize that it was only an excerpt. I asked for the whole book. Thank you.
Wow this excerpt has me twice as excited for the full book! I'm so glad Cora has started writing YA because her story telling is amazing.
I received this preview from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
I am so excited about this book!! I almost screamed and threw my beloved kindle when the preview ended. I want more!!! This book has a ton of potential and even in the short view I recieved it had so much emotions and situations tied up into it....
I think this will be one of the greats for my year in books!
Interesting, and genuinely enough to whet my appetite. I believe this will be coming in the June Fairyloot box so I'll happily read this one!
I wish this would have been more than the excerpt. It was good and just enough to drag you in and wanting more, but without the whole book, I can't give this a fully honest review or a fully honest answer on if I would recommend this or not, but this was right up my alley and that cover is gorgeous.
There will be a link for a compilation wrap up on Monday May 8th 2017. But that was a small disappointment with the awful male stereotype that felt a bit offensive. But the magic seems interesting. Full mini review to come with the link.
"She had hoped. And hope broke more hearts than any man ever could."
I read an excerpt of this book provided by NetGalley, and I want to read the rest of this story! What an interesting, and unique concept! It seems like, from what I read, it may be geared towards an older, YA, or perhaps even adult audience? We shall see.
Book Preview
Title: Roar
Author: Cora Carmack
Genre: Fantasy/Action/Romance
Rating: ****
Review: This preview to Roar which will be released on June 13th of this year was brilliant and very gripping. In the prologue we are introduced to the land of Caelira whose people were gifted the power of the tempest by the goddess Rezna and these people were known as Stormlings. We meet Aurora Pavan who its the heir of One of the strongest Stormling families who has been arranged to marry a Stormling prince from another kingdom. Aurora its different though desire coming from a strong Stormling family she has no storm magic at all and will go to any lengths to keep this secret with her mother's aid.
When she meets her soon to be husband Cassius Locke she is immediately fascinated and terrified by him and the amount of power he is able to wield. Aurora despite being trapped in an arranged marriage with Cassius is extremely attracted to him and holds out hope for their marriage while Cassius is also surprised by her he still sees her as a way out of his father's control. After an accident between the pair during training Cassius bribes a palace maid to feed him information about Aurora`s "well-being". One night when following Cassius Aurora discovers an underground illegal market where magic is bought and sold and she immediately sees a way to gain what she had always lacked; storm magic.
This preview was great it really hooks the reader with amazing characters, an interesting plot and a unique magic system which I personally haven't seen before. I can't wait for the book to come out in the summer so I can continue reading this story as soon as I can.
Ok, I've been following Cora Carmack on social media for several years now. Found her through a twitter contest I was participating in with one of my own books. I was excited to finally read something of hers and it wasn't disappointing.
The preview took me through the first 70 pages or so, and it leaves you on a cliffhanger. There is romance and magic all packed into a short amount of time and the characters are wonderful. I've requested the rest of the book from the publisher, so we will see if they approve me or not. Hopefully they do.
I'm not sure I'm very partial here, considering I've read everything cora has ever written and would read her grocery list if she'd let me....
But this was amazing and I'm really looking forward to reading the entire book!
I'm so frustrated right now, I want more.
This sampler has me desperately wanting to read Roar as soon as possible!
The author managed to pack in a lot of information in the first four chapters, but it didn't feel like 'information overload'. I am fascinated by the Stormhearts and want to know more about this world and how the magic system works. Also, Aurora is definitely an interesting character and quite different than I was expecting.
I'm excited to see where this story goes and will be checking out the full book ASAP.
This preview included the first four chapters of Cora Carmack's "Roar" - and they hooked me. I can't wait to read the rest of the book when it comes out. Full of magic, mystery, unique ideas, and compelling characters.
WOW, what an enchanting start.
It definitely had me wanting MORE!
I loved the writing, it was beautifully vibrant, descriptive and detailed. The world building was excellent, layered and enchanting.
I adored Aurora, she was such a strong and quick-witted female. I admire that in a heroine. She was also very likable and not at all what I expected in a princess. Rora was very much someone that even so she agreed to marry for the future of her people, she will not go down without a fight. She was strong willed and willing to go the extra mile to make her wish come true.
Cassius was a truly interesting character, and even so Aurora doesn't seem too interested in him, he sounded fabulous to me. I'm extremely interested in finding out more about Locke - and it's killing me that I'll have to wait until release day to find out who she is going to end up with.
Since this was an excerpt review, I will not publish it on my blog, rather wait until I can read the entire book.
I only read the 4 chapter preview but it was really good. Now I want to read the whole book.
Cora Carmack's Roar is churning with intriguing danger and crackling electricity like the storms it seeks to conquer in its pages. The idea of a world so wrought with storms that they must be challenged to be defeated, and that there are humans capable of wielding their power has a great promise for action and magic. Aurora, who comes from a long line of Stormlings, and yet has no magic of her own, has a world of exploring to do outside of the confines of her crown. Rora must decide who can be trusted and how she can find her own power away from her mother and betrothed. This world immediately had me tangled into it's effortless dialogue, beautiful world-building and strained relationships. I cannot wait to see how the rest of Carmack's new fantasy series unfolds!
