Bianca Blythe is not afraid to tackle prejudice as she did in How to Capture a Duke. In that one she tackled the ton's nonacceptance of amputees, even though he was a war hero. In Mad About the Baron she delves into race prejudice, which unfortunately is still an issue. Ms. Blythe handles the issue very nicely. The heroine, Veronique not only half black, but also a romance writer, and an American (though born in Barbardos) trying to be accepted into English society. Although her stepbrother (the hero from How to Capture a Duke), her darker complexion and curly hair make her unacceptable. She has found a love in her Austrian baron, whom she has never met. A case of mistaken identity throws her together with the wrong baron, Miles Worthing. That is where their adventure begins, secrets are revealed, and love is found. I have not read a book by this author I did not like. I like the way she broaches serious subjects, but yet injections some humor into the storyline.

Veronique has found the perfect man to wed, but when he doesn't show up for their appointed wedding and someone else does, it all starts getting very complicated very quickly. She just doesn't have a choice, but to go and find him, with Lord Worthing in tow.

I really liked the concept of this novel. It was an interesting twist and as a result and as a result I really wanted to enjoy this novel. Though it's an easy read, it fell a little flat to me. Not only wasn't it believable, but I had a hard time taking interest in some of the characters in this novel. That didn't stop me from finishing it though, as I said, it was a very easy read. I really liked Blythe's style of writing. It flows off the page and makes for wonderful reading, hence the 3rd star.

I'd be interested to see what else the author comes up with in the future. And I would definitely suggest this novel to anyone looking for a fun and easy summer read.

I loved the story line of an English man falling for a woman of color. I have been hoping more writers would incorporate this taboo subject into more books. I thought Miles the perfect fit for Veronique. Love the book.

This was not my favorite book of Ms. Blythe's. I really wanted to like it. And I did enjoy the story of it. The book is more of a novella type story which jumps between details at times and at times goes into long detail.
I was embarrassed for our heroine. She was naive. And mistreated to the point of my being indignant on her behalf. People are horrible and judgemental in all time periods and all walks of life. This is a series subject for a short book.
The hero was arrogant and thought highly of himself, but in the end he saw the light.

I can't quite figure out why this read was just so, so for me. I really liked that Veronique was not your typical English lady. She was American and was mulatto. I was excited to see some diversity in a historical romance as that is not common. But I just couldn't get into this story. It didn't hold my interest like other books in the Matchmaking series.

Another great story to add to the series. I loved the characters and the storyline. All the obsticles they had to overcome turned out well worth it. The story reads well and is worth checking out.

'Mad about the Baron' by Bianca Blythe is book Four in the "Matchmaking for Wallflowers" series.
This is the story of Veronique Daventry and Lord Miles Worthing. This is easily a standalone book but Veronique is the stepsister to Percival Carmichael, new Duke of Alfriston who was the main hero in the First book "How to Capture a Duke" and Miles is the stepbrother of Lord Rupert Haywood who was the hero in the Third book " Runaway Wallflower".
Veronique has been writing a Baron for about two years now and they finally set a date to meet and marry. When Veronique shows up with her maid there is no Baron. Then Veronique's maid thinks she has found him and brings him to the Chapel. Miles thinks the maid works for his step-brother and follows her. Which leads him to be later to be caught kissing Veronique. But once Veronique learns he isn't the Baron she has been writing she tries to avoid any marriage to him. Miles and her family feel otherwise and try to get them to commit to marriage. But will they give in?

Mad About the Baron is a delightful, madcap, cross-country adventure of a sweet, somewhat misunderstood, young lady looking for love. There are already several great reviews indicating the way Baron Miles Worthing assists Veronique Daventry in finding Baron Braunschweig, the fiance she was supposed to have wed without ever having met. This charming story has such funny moments, you will enjoy the light-heartedness as he follows her, joins up with her, travels to London and back toward Scotland all in search of her missing baron.

All of this traveling allows Miles and Veronique to form a special, unique bond that will lead them to their HEA. There are, also, some difficult moments during their adventuress that just bring them closer in Miles defense of Veronique.

The coming and going of Miss Haskett in the book should have been a hint to the revelation near the end, but it was a surprise anyway.

Certainly, this another charming addition to the Matchmaking for Wallflowers series, but it is a standalone book, too. You can read this is one long afternoon if you would like a feel good book. Enjoy!

I will not include this in my public review, but want to note that Veronique’s nose early in the book was described as flatter and wider than most due to her ethnicity. In chapter twenty-two, Miles is described as ‘memorizing the exact shape of her upturned nose...” Those two statements do not hold with the description of Veronique. Additionally, if you can wait until 85% of the book to include the sensual connection, then you could really leave it out. Ms. Blythe you are a gifted writer who does not need to include sex to make a book great. Please do not misunderstand as most are looking for a bit of sex, but it did not make the book any better or worse.

This is a fun, jaunty historical romance read.

Veronique Daventry has grown up to be very independent, enjoying her own career as novelist, but feels like she has never completely belonged due to her ancestral heritage. After corresponding with a Baron for years, who flatters her with endearments and promises her love, she arranges to elope with him in Scotland. However, the groom never shows up, instead Veronique mistakes Lord Miles Worthing as her Baron and they are found in a compromising position. Veronique won't marry Lord Worthing, as she is convinced her Baron still wants to marry her, but was delayed for some reason. She then goes on a search to locate her true love, and is joined on the journey by Lord Worthing.

This story is essential about trying to find where you belong. While there are several instances where things occur that are hard believe, if you suspend your disbelief, the romance is very sweet.

Though the story was interesting and the couple sweet, I just couldn't connect with them. I've liked all the prior books, but not sold on this. The first one had me laughing out loud, and I've already reread it.

Publisher's Description:

A hopeless romantic...
Veronique Daventry absolutely believes in true love. When the baron she's corresponded with for years over long distance suggests they elope in Scotland, she eagerly assents. Perhaps she's never met him, but she's certain their souls are meant to be joined for eternity.

A notorious rogue...
Lord Miles Worthing is surprised when he is ushered to a chapel on a visit to Scotland and finds a beautiful woman. His happiness halts when her family discovers them in a compromising position.

A mistaken identity...
Veronique is devastated to have mistaken this stranger for her fiancé. She needs to find the correct baron at once, but the only person who can help her is the man who makes her heart race as it absolutely should not.

My Thoughts:

I have read most of this series and found this book to be the best I have read so far. There is just the right mixture of comedy, adventure and love.
Veronique is a young woman who is the daughter of an American and a mulatto woman. She is a romantic who is the secret author of books that were considered, in this time period to be scandalous reading materials.
She has been corresponding with a Baron for two years and intends to marry him as soon as possible.
Miles who has recently been given the title of Baron is mistaken for the Baron that Veronique intends to marry.
This is how our adventurous tale begins.
Will Veronique get her happily ever after. Will it be with the man she has been corresponding with for two years or the man who was recently mistaken for him?
I found this at times funny tale to have very endearing characters and well thought out storyline.
I gave it 4.25 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 3 of 5 flames.
There is only a brief physical encounter near the end of the book. This scene was the undeniable culmination of what would happen.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I have voluntarily reviewed.

A quite naive case of mistaken identity sets off this regency romance, given extra interest by the heroine's American mulatto background and the career ambitions of the lead couple to be journalists and continue to publish.

Mad About The Baron by Bianca Blythe
Matchmaking for Wallflowers #4

Hmmm… If you are looking for a historical romance that is highly unbelievable but a fun read then this book might be for you. Both hero and heroine are exaggerated in one way or another with Miles reminding me a bit of the cartoon character, Johnny Bravo. I am not sure who to liken Veronique to, though. The word that comes to mind is that she is an oxymoron in that she can seem so clever at times and yet so unwise at others. While reading I again would use the term “unbelievable” since I can’t see anyone in the early 1800’s choosing to take off as the two did in this story or to behave as they did at various time during the story. In some ways this felt a bit more like a spoof than a romance but all in all it was an entertaining read.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC – This is my honest review.

3 Stars

I enjoyed reading this book very much! It kept me on my toes and I enjoyed every single page of it. There are some twists and turns, many charming characters, a wonderful hero and an equally wonderful heroine, some not so charming characters that I would have loved to tell my mind (and a bit more) because I was so upset.

And well, there are spinsters to sedu...oh, stop, spinsters, WHO seduce, at least they try to or...well, then there are marriage-minded barons and marriage-fleeing barons and of course, there's also the loving family. Well. Some of them....let's just say that I was very very upset with the way they treated Veronique even though they love her, somehow and don't even realize what they do. Seriously, right, I know that it is a fictional character but there are so many Veroniques out there and have been in every century, every country and every social class and they have suffered this kind of someitmes even loving but always hurtful treatment due to their heritage. Why can't a beautiful woman just be a beautiful woman no matter what the color of her skin? There is no shame in being "different", the only shame is in thinking that someone is inferior just due to the circumstances of his or her birth. And Veronique, well, even though I know that she is fictional, it hurt to read that such a wonderful, loving, life-embracing, sassy, courageous and strong person grew up knowing that she was considered a problem.

Alright, I guess my rant shows that the book really got to me, I felt with the hero and the heroine and I was very worried when I wasn't sure that the heroine wouldn't make a very big mistake and, well, I loved how Miles, Lord Worthing, the other baron, the unexpected one, took her heritage for granted and loved her just because she was a wonderful person (and, well, a good looking one as well). But then there is the other baron, the one that is Veronique's fiancé....

Okay, I hope I didn't give you the impression that this book is just about Veronique and the way she was looked at due to the color of her skin because that is definitely not the case. It is a great story with amazing characters, witty and captivating with some twists and turns, that made me smile, laugh out loud, upset me and made me, well, not cry but it made my heart go out to this sweet heroine.
I really really enjoyed reading this book and will definitely read it again. It's not the first book by Bianca Blythe that I've read and it won't be the last.
