*I received this book on NetGalley from an honest review* Rise of the Jumbies (#2) by Tracey Baptiste is the continuation of the previous Caribbean folktale installment. We encounter Corinne LaMer still adjusting to life after defeating the white witch, Severine. Ostracized by her island home, after they discovered she was half jumbie, Corinne attempts to continue life as normal as possible. However, when children start to go missing in mysterious ways always near water, the villagers start to turn their attention to Corinne. Eager to find her missing friends, Corinne strikes a deal with sea jumbie, Mama D’Leau and she and her remaining friends set off on an adventure of a lifetime complete with mermaids and powerful objects hidden in Ghana. This lovely novel combines Caribbean mythology with its West African roots.

Now that everyone knows Corinne is half-Jumbie she is not as accepted as she once was on her island home. Severine is gone but when children start disappearing after an earthquake Corinne wonders if she is back. She enlists the help of Mama D’Leau, queen Jumbie of the sea. Of course she has to do a favor before Mama will truly help her. The favor involves Corinne, Dru, Malik and Bouki traveling to Ghana with four mermaids to retrieve an opal. In Ghana they learn the mermaids were once locals who were kidnapped by slavers and drowned when their ship went down. They were saved by Mama D’Leau and turned into mermaids.

Back on the island with the opal, things don’t go as planned. An uproar over the missing children caused the angry villagers to burn part of the Jumbie forest. Corinne has to find the children before the island is torn apart and before Severine causes more problems. To do that Corinne has to make some hard choices.

I liked this book even more than I did the first one. Mama D’Leau and the mermaids were welcome additions to the mythology of the Jumbies. I especially loved Papa Bois though. He is the king of the forest and Mama’s opposite. I thought there meetings and interactions were fantastic! Corinne and her friends have a grand adventure and learn more about themselves and the world they inhabit. I find these stories fantastically entertaining.

I received this book from Netgalley.

I love this story and I only got a sneak preview. I can't wait to read book one and then dive right into Rise of the Jumbies.

Rise of the Jumbies an adventure fairy tale is a follow up to one the first book The Jumbies. Magic, mermaids and a brief history lesson all encompass this amazing book. This book is based on Caribbean folklore, while the first Haitian. I thoroughly enjoyed this plotline, and 15 pages in, pulled my 9-year-old to my side and read aloud with him. We spent 3 nights reading the story and he really enjoyed it. We will be reading The Jumbies very soon.

Baptiste does an amazing job at setting the scene, through descriptive writing and fantastic language. Coupled with lovable characters and an easy to follow, adventure packed story line, Rise of the Jumbies is a perfect book for those with children looking to expand their in home library with culturally diverse characters. If you have middle grades readers struggling to find something enjoyable, then this is the book you want them to read.

Rise of the Jumbies is an amazing book, as an adult I found myself wanting more. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more.

This is a suspenseful story with a courageous heroine at the centre. I loved the mythical and fairy-tale quality to the story and how the landscape and seascape become characters onto themselves. Young readers are bound to enjoy this novel.

I enjoyed this sampler which I read after having reread The Jumbies. Corinne's little village has not responded well to discovering she is a jumbie. There is a new creature lurking in the ocean and children are going missing. Naturally the neighbors become suspicious of Corrine for being half jumbie and she must embark on an adventure to clear her name. Being Trinidadian myself I love finding stories set in the Caribbean and Tracey Baptiste finds a perfect balance of different traditions and folklores to weave into her stories.

Even better than the first book! A journey full of magic, self-discovery, a buried history, and family ties.

I received a copy of this sneak peek from Algonquin Young Readers through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

This is the second book in a series, which I did not know while I was reading, although I did start to suspect as much fairly quickly. Because of this, there was definitely information that I was missing, but I didn't feel completely lost. Like I don't really know what a jumbie is, but I have surmised that they are mythical creatures of some sort that possibly prey on humans. So I spent more of my time reading this sneak peek trying to figure out some of those things than I really should have had to spend, but that's a me problem. Because of this, I would recommend that you start with The Jumbies if you have any interest in this series at all (I just one-clicked it myself so I can go back and figure some stuff out).

I feel kind of bad, because at this point, I'm not really sure what to think about this story. I mean, I'm obviously a bit intrigued because I did just buy the first book in the series, but since I was working so hard to try to figure out what jumbies even are, among other things, I didn't ever really feel invested in the story itself, and it didn't have me sucked in, which is not normal for middle grade fantasy and me. And because this was just a sneak peek, I barely even got to know the main characters. I think at this point, I'm most interested in continuing the story because Mama D'Leau seems like a rather evil character from the brief glimpse I got of her, and I worry that Corinne will not come away from their dealings unscathed.

So would I buy this book for myself? Probably, but it's going on my wishlist for now until after I've read The Jumbies, because it's possible, although not likely, that I will lose interest in Corinne and her friends during the course of the first book.

I hadn't previously read the first book in this series, but I still found this to be entirely fun and enjoyable.

I would be honest with you, I choose this book to see the quality of craftsmanship from my fellow country woman, and I am astounded, the quality of her writing is great and the intrigue in the story is just right. When I started reading I didn’t expect to be enthralled but I’m glad to say I’m, the storyline is excellent, the house on the hill above the sea hit home, I can actually see it vividly in my head. This is like a children's horror but with fun and lovable characters, Corinne had it hard but she is a tough and brave little cookie, after being ostracized by the villagers who seems to blame her for the evil Severine cause and now it’s has started all over with children going missing, she still sets out to help, imagine volunteering to speak to a sea witch the most evil and probably the strongest Mama D’Leau, how brave is that and to think the adults are afraid. Corinne is a star in my book, this preview I read has intrigue seeping through the creases, it leaves me wondering what happened next, I like this book great stuff.

An excellent sci-fi young adult/middle grade novel. It immediately grabbed the reader's attention and left you wanting more. The reader will quickly feel empathy for each of the characters and want to know what happens to all of them.
