Oh, I love these movies! It was such a pleasure to read about the making of the films. I just finished As You Wish about the making of The Princess Bride (which I also loved!) The three movies this book writes about are just timeless! Although the You Have Mail may date it a bit! But who cares! Wonderful chick flicks that our grand daughters will love as much as us!
Carlson reconstructs the process by which Ephron, who had grown up with Hollywood screenwriter parents who catered to debonair and suave Cary Grant characters, and who had taken on a significant edgy and cynical life view after her marriage to Carl Bernstein and its public reveal in Heartburn, teamed up with Rob Reiner and Gary and Penny Marshall to reinvent romantic comedy--finding Tom Hanks as a leading man and making Meg Ryan into an adorkable heroine.
Reading this book was a delight. It is retelling the story of how Nora Ephron got involved in her three most iconic movies: When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail. I love reading movie trivia so this book is just full of all the details that brought to life these great movies. Yes, I do consider them great because they have endured throughout the years and still today they are true to their goal: showing (not telling) the makings of falling in love. When I say, “going into the details” I really mean it. The book describes how the actors were chosen, the locations, the make-up, even the lighting. It also delves a little into the love life of the people that participated in these movies. So, if you like any of these movies or anything from the following list: Nora Ephron, Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, old movies, baseball, bookstores, old music, New York, coffee, bouquets of sharpened pencils, or tiramisu, you absolutely must read I’ll Have What She’s Having.
A charming and entertaining book which gave me a glimpse backstage into the world of movie making and a deeper appreciation of the life and work of Nora Ephron. This book is a must read for all fans of romantic comedies.
Reading I'll Have What She's Having was just as satisfying as watching one of the three movies featured in the book (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You've Got Mail). I loved falling into the real world behind the movies. All the sass and wit and complexity that made the films timeless were infused in the book.
Erin Carlson's respect for Nora Ephron was clear in the meticulous research and thorough notes. Her love for the subject matter was reflected in the warmth of her tone.
I read I'll Have What She's Having in one day - It was that engaging. This book is perfect for anyone who believes in the power of love on film, in writing, and in life.
