My Fair Lover by Nicole Jordan was a good book. I’m really ashamed of how long it took me to read it. But that’s not the book’s fault, that’s all on me. I didn’t choose the right time to start it as I was really busy. And I regret it because I’m sure that’s the kind of book I could have read in one go.
♥ The story ♥
My Fair Lover tells the story of Lady Katherine and Brandon Deverill. Six years ago, Brandon broke Kathy’s heart by leaving her to go at war against the English, her own countrymen. Today he’s back and she needs his help to recover lost family treasures. In exchange, she offers him to help him find a bride. She then starts to teach him how to properly woo a Lady but Deverill has more interesting lessons to teach Lady Katherine, those of passion and love.
♥ What I liked ♥
The start is fabulous and intriguing. And after that I was never bored.
The characters are strong and honest, their banter is fun and sweet and the intimate scenes are hot and passionate.
I loved the story, I felt like there were two parts but then maybe that’s because of how I read it.
There was no unnecessary drama so I’m really glad, I got to enjoy every scene immensely.
♥ What I liked less ♥
The down parts (hence my rating) is I felt there was something missing from a certain point. Things were a bit rushed from there.
Nonetheless, it still is another great historical romance and I recommend for lovers of the genre. I’m definitely interesting in reading other books from this series and this author.
My Fair Lover is Nicole Jordan at her best. While it is a series book, it stands alone beautifully and makes me want to move all the previous books to the top of my tbr pile. Lady Katherine Wilde is the family matchmaker, yet her heart belongs to the one man who turned her away. Brandon Deverill, after returning from war and inheriting a title needs a wife and sets his sights on Kate, while she is determined to turn him into a perfect match, for someone else.
Second chance romance with a lovely twist, a rake with morals.
When, after a long day of sick kids, I sat down thinking I'd read just for a little bit before going to bed, I didn't expect to be sucked into an enjoyable story that kept me up for hours, unable to put the book (ok, phone) down. I have to admit, it had been quite a while since I had read earlier books in the Legendary Lovers series, and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Ms. Jordan's storytelling. Strong heroes and heroines, a good story and likeable cast of characters. It's definitely helpful to have read earlier books in the series to have some of the backstory, but I would say not necessary.
Action, adventure, and a love story! I enjoyed the story, although sone parts were a bit implausible. 3 stars.
I normally adore Nicole Jordan books, and I did enjoy the book, but I felt like there were almost two very different books smashed together. The beginning of the book, as Kate is trying to introduce Brandon to his potential wives and teach him to be a civilized part of the aristocracy was completely necessary and not even valid as the second part of the book has him acting as a heroic adventurer. Had the book started on their journey with their treasure hunt, I would have given this book four stars. The characters are well done (as is all her characters), and the chemistry and development into love is fabulous. I had to knock off another story for the ridiculous and unneeded sub-plot of matching up a friend with an obviously abusive lover (and the villain of the second half the story).
4.5 Stars!
My Fair Lover had an amazing romance with fantastic characters and was definitely my favorite book in the Legendary Lovers series.
When Lady Katherine Wilde agrees to help Brandon Deverill find a bride after he rejected her six years ago, she believes all feelings she had for him are gone. Her agreement to help, however, comes with the condition that he escorts her to France and protects her from pirates while helping her discover where her parents’ ship sank. When Deverill kisses her to finalize their arrangement, Kate begins to question if her feelings are truly in the past. Now that Brandon has inherited a title, he knows Kate is the one he wants for a bride, he simply doesn’t know how to convince her of that. When their journey in France becomes dangerous, Kate and Brandon will have to decide what they’re willing to risk for the possibility of the love of a lifetime.
Kate is the reason her family embarked on their quests to find true love by emulating legendary lovers of history. After helping her family find their mates, she more than any of them believes in true love and won't accept anything less in her own match. I admired how much Kate stuck to her beliefs and didn't let her attraction to Brandon lead her astray. Kate is definitely a strong and opinionated lady which definitely makes her stand out in all of her scenes.
Brandon has a very cynical outlook when it comes to love, but he still wishes to marry Kate. He feels they're very compatible and believes they would make a good match and could have a comfortable life. Brandon is definitely a take charge kind of guy and has a massive protective instinct when it comes to Kate. The situation they find themselves in definitely plays into his alpha male personality.
Kate and Brandon have incredible chemistry from the get-go and I enjoyed how much banter there was in their conversations. These two love to antagonize each other and tend to be very playful. Their physical chemistry was off the charts and when that aspect of their relationship is expanded on, I was loving it. These two simply click in their bedroom scenes and I definitely bought into their romance very quickly.
The pacing in this book is definitely the best in the series and the plot moves fairly quickly. My favorite parts of the book were after the characters went to France to begin the search for her parents' sunken ship. I mean who doesn't love pirates and searches for treasure with the hint of danger at every turn? Plus, Brandon being connected to the pirates in France was a nice twist.
My Fair Lover did inspire me to look into the myth of Pygmalion, which I was unaware of prior to starting this book. I love when books inspire me to learn more about something in the book. Overall, I definitely recommend checking out this book and the rest of the series if you're looking for a great historical romance series.
I love the story legendary lovers. I've been waiting for Katherine to finally get her own story. Watching her play matchmaker to all her family I knew she was going to struggle to find her legendary lover.
Katherine humiliated herself has a seventeen year old in love with Deverill by sneaking onto his bed. Only to rejected by Deverill because he didn't want to take advantage of her and leave to return to America.
Katherine decided to wait until she found her true love before getting married. She all her family find their true love match. She knew she won't settle for less.
Deverill inherited his uncle's estate and moved back to England. He knew Katherine was the woman he wanted to marry. Struggling with his nightmares from serving in war he didn't believe he could love and find happiness. He was willing to settle for a marriage of convenience.
Katherine's aunt decided Katherine was the perfect person to help Deverill find his way into English society and help find a wife.
In exchange for helping Deverill she needed his help going to France to locate her parents shipwreck and give her family closure and her parents a proper burial.
Kate planned for him to meet the right lady. Deverill only wanted to find a way to convince Kate they were meant to be together.
They ended up temporary engaged and went to find her parent shipwreck. They decided to get to each other better. Deverill was determined to honorable and keep Kate at a distance. But Kate was determined to find out it this romance was worth keeping.
While traveling to France and searching for the shipwreck Deverill and Kate fall in love but both were to weary of being hurt.
During find the shipwreck Deverill and Kate were put in dangerous. They had to fight to survive and finally realized love was more important then hanging on to fears.
Thanks Netgallery for ARC of My Fair Lover. (le
Very good historical romance. It does follow a predictable story line, but it was a good way to pass the time.
Holy hotness! Did you look at the cover? Well hello, Deverill.
Nicole Jordan is one of my favorite authors. And with My Fair Lover is it any wonder?
I liked Deverill and Kate from the first pages. Things were so good between them that I actually held my breath waiting for disaster to strike. They were perfect for each other and so much fun. They're both smart and funny with great love to give those fortunate to be in their circle.
I loved the whole story. There wasn't a slow part anywhere and no skimming at all on my part. Do yourself a favor and read My Fair Lover as well as the rest of Nicole Jordan.
There's enough tragedy and drama in real life right now, that I'm having a hard time reading about it in my spare time. I know I'm not the only one who could use a good historical romance that will make me fall a little bit in love with a fictional Baron/ship captain. My Fair Lover is the perfect fix.
Lady Katherine Wilde has a huge success rate as a matchmaker for everyone but herself. She hadn't been able to get over that night six years ago when Brandon Deverill found her naked in his bed and then summarily kicked her out of it without explanation. Now Deverill is back with a new title and searching for a new bride. Will Kate let her defenses down again, or will she instead find a new match for the man she has always loved?
My Fair Lover is super sexy, swoony, and all around a fun read.
Thank you for the chance to read and review this book. I loved the premise and while I enjoyed Kate and Brandon, something was missing for me.
Thanks Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and netgalley for this ARC.
This is a push and pull, fighting against each other, before giving in kinda romance. Quick, passionate, and good
Having read Nicole's earlier books I found this one hard going in the beginning, it took longer to read than normal, although I liked the characters I thought the storyline slow.
Lady Katherine “Kate” Wilde sneaks into Brandon Deverill’s room dressed as a footman the last time she had done this she had tried to seduce him which he rebuffed her denying her advances. This time she had something to prove to herself that she doesn’t care for Brandon and to turn Bandon into a proper English Baron since he inherited the title. Kate figured she could put some distance between her and Brandon besides it was six years ago when she was in love with Brandon her heart is no longer broken and her promise to help Brandon find a bride will not go unheeded. Kate is a matchmaker and will find Brandon the perfect English bride then do everything to forget the hurt that lingers there and the attraction for Brandon she has attempted to smother but still is there. Unfortunately Brandon might have plans to find an English bride but also wants Kate for himself. Of course Kate wants Brandon but has decided to marry for love.
I was pretty shocked that I would enjoy this book by Ms. Nicole Jordan as much as I did. Yes I did harbor some apprehension in reading the story since Ms. Jordan is a new author for me and the story seems pretty simple following a basic formula there was just a little bit more to it than that it still enchanted me nonetheless. I liked the idea of the protagonist’s past and liked the sizzling sexual tension between the two. Ms. Jordan also appears to write quite well spinning a wonderful tale filled with adventure, family, pirates, matchmaking, an American attempting to become a stuffy English lord and lastly love.
I really liked Kate despite her resolve for love. Yes her heart is broken by Brandon but she tries not to let it consume her even though she can’t help it. Kate even though can’t find love herself finds it for others which seemed really nice but I did start to feel a little sorry for her. Yes she was strong but many times I just wanted her to throw caution to the wind and give up this idea of love because it seemed love was more trouble than it was worth. I wanted to tell her that sometimes relationships are just sex and there is nothing wrong with that but I can understand her wanting it but I think in Brandon’s case you might just want to just keep as a bedmate. Of course this didn’t make me really care for Brandon that despite his rakish never do well attitude I had a hard time connecting with him. I think he really cared for Kate just was lousy at showing his emotions except when it came to sleeping a lot with Kate. Still he wasn’t a bad guy I just wanted to like him a little bit better. I did feel as though the ending was a little rushed especially concerning the animosity Brandon felt for the pirate and I really felt bad for Daphne I do hope she finds someone because she really didn’t get anything. I do hope Ms. Jordan will give her a happy ending someday. I do plan on reading more from Ms. Jordan however no matter the story.
My Fair Lover is loosely modelled on Pygmalion, the twist being that it is our heroine who is moulding the hero into a proper English gentleman. Set in England and France around 1816, this story features romance (of course), a spot of intrigue and pirates. I liked Kate and Brandon and I liked many of the supporting characters. They were well developed and believable. For the most part I liked the plot though it sagged a little here and there and I felt the story was tied up a little too neatly at the end. I also felt the pacing could have been better. There were times when the story seemed to stand still. Despite these issues, the characters carried the story and ensured I was entertained.
My Fair Lover is intended to be a gender-reversed, Regency version of Pygmalion. Lady Katherine Wilde is a darling of the ton, and just the woman Brandon Deverill, newly minted Earl and former American privateer, needs to teach him to fit into the ways of London high society.
The problem is that they have History. Six years ago, Kate had such a huge crush on Deverill she attempted to seduce him by putting herself naked in his bed. Knowing that he had to leave for the Americas, Deverill did the honourable thing and refused her.
As far as I can tell, that was his first and last honourable act, because throughout this entire book, he behaves like a complete and utter boor. He asks Kate for her advice and doesn't listen to her about anything. He flat out lies to her face any number of times, asking her to help him find a bride while scheming behind her back with her family. He decides that he's going to marry Kate despite knowing that she wants to marry for love, knowing that he doesn't love her and believing himself not capable of it.
Honestly, by this time, I've seen the 'my parents didn't love each other so I don't know How To Love!" hero so many times I could predict the plot as soon as I read that line. (Funny how it's never the heroine from an abusive family who thinks she's incapable of love, isn't it? But I digress.)
For a supposedly strong-willed, independent, wealthy and beautiful woman who has been out in society for a number of years, Kate behaves like a complete ninny. Surely by this time she's learned to recognize when a man is intent on seduction? But again and again she lets Deverill do whatever he wants with her, so overwhelmed by her attraction to him that she apparently forgets all her common sense.
It was all just so predictable. I found myself skimming whole chunks with 'blah blah' running through my head. Nicole Jordan is a top-notch writer, but this seriously felt like she grabbed a bunch of tropes, mixed them up in a blender, and wrote to order whatever came out. Unexpectedly inherited title? Check! Strong sassy heroine who can't help herself when it comes to the hero? Check! He's a pirate too? Check! Don't forget the Other Pirate With A Grudge Over A Woman! Check!
Blah. Blah. Blah.
When you're one of the top writers in the field of Regency Romance, your readers expect better than getting to the end of the book with a feeling of relief that it's finally over.
Two stars.
There wasn't a ton of polishing ala My Fair Lady, but there was plenty of romance. Katherine and Brandon had quite the history, and everything came to fruition between their adventure to France and their visits to the ballrooms and drawing rooms of the ton.
Entertaining historical romance but I wanted a little more angst. The HEA came too easy for me especially after what Brandon put Kate through.
