I received a free copy of this book on NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*
I just want to start out by saying that I am IN LOVE with this book! I was kind of in a reading slump, but this book has rekindled my love for reading and totally brought me out of that slump!
This book took me a long time to read, but that's because I had just gotten done with a few other NetGalley books that I just wasn't into and I went into this book being in the wrong mindset and I just really wasn't enjoying it at first. I gave myself about a three week break and I came back to it and it was like I was reading a completely new book and I immediately fell in love with the book and its characters.
I think that the cover of the book is very simple, but it's also very fitting for the book and if you read the book, it doesn't need an explanation.
I absolutely love the characters in this book. I think that the characters are very well fleshed out and the reader will instantly fall in love with them.
The cover lured me and the story hooked me and reeled me in. A unique story with a believable cast of characters. The Convergence is a story that should not be missed. I'm grateful for the opportunity to read and enjoy this book.
The Convergence is a magical, paranormal, romantic story that tells the story of Desiree Morgan. She hides her real self and her apparent physical abilities of everyone, nobody really understand or knows who she really is because the physical powers (strength, speed) come with the price of her being scared of not being normal. That is until a new face in town comes sweeping her off her feet, Blake Thomas.
Blake has many secrets on his own and as Desiree finds out she is adopted and they start falling in love with each other, the secrets get harder to keep. Secrets that involve Desiree in more way than one.
As Blake tells her that she is part of an elite group of people that have abilities to turn their emotions into physical powers called the convergers. Her biological father was one as well. They set Blake up to look for her and other convergers. However, Blake doesn't want Desiree to join as he fears the group would probably enjoy her power and decide to use her for bad or worse decide to terminate. This is why he sets to leave and leaves Desiree behind with a broken heart and a new found truth about herself. However, the whirlwind of the story doesn't end there. As Desiree desires to find answers about her biological dad she finds herself in the group Blake didn't want her to meet. They set her up for a bunch of testing and she realizes that the group, specially its leader, is more dangerous as she thinks.
The story is filled with unmoving action and a romance that in my opinion could have been prolonged and explored a little longer. I didn't enjoy the fact that their relationship went from they not admitting to what they really felt, to them ignoring each other, and to Blake blurting out in the middle of a trial how she loved her. It was a cute way of admitting their love for each other, but it happened too sudden and it left me no real sense of their relationship. Apart from that I enjoyed that the author was able to add to the story both the high school side of Desiree, keeping her kind of childish and innocent and yet she was able to change the mood mid book to a more mature and action filled book.
The cliffhanger left my heart aching for more and I can't wait to read the next one!
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This title was a Did Not Finish. Unfortunately, I was unable to connect with it whether it be for characters, story-line or writing style.
Thank you for providing me with a copy.
I was given the opportunity to read an electronic copy of The Convergence via NetGalley. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Desiree Morgan is not following the path that she laid out with her friends Kyle and Nichole. Instead of going to Arizona State, Dezi is going to travel the world. In order to make some money for the trip, Dezi teaches riding lessons to an annoying new student. When Dezi inadvertently reveals one of her secret abilities, will Blake's questioning looks and suspicious nature cause issues for Desiree? When she is told a truth that rocks her world, to whom will she be able to turn?
I found aspects of the plot to remind me of other dystopian stories. Convergence includes a strong female character with secret abilities, being used as a pawn in a deadly game. It seemed strange to me that Desiree's friends and family accepted Blake so quickly and pushed Dezi to do so as well. This was a fast paced story with non-stop action, but the character development was a bit lacking. There was just too much that the author wanted the reader to accept at face value, but there were too many missing pieces to make it a cohesive story.
I loved the plot! Converting powerful emotions into physical power. How original!
I think many people are going to give this one a well deserved five stars.
I didn't quite work for me. I believe it's an "all me" problem, not the book's.
Where it fell a little short for me was in the development of the relationship between Blake and Desiree.
At 50%, I still wasn't sure how or why they developed feelings for each other when the entire time they'd been frenemies. I needed to hear more of Dezi's thoughts when she was falling for him. I needed to read about her confused feelings, especially the ones that were more tender towards him instead of only the ones where she didn't really like him.
Blake Thomas was hard for me to like. He seemed sneaky and made me suspicious of everything he said and did. He's 20 years old yet seems at least twice that old. The problem is that I didn't trust or believe him even when I was supposed to.
At 70% I was still so disconnected from this story. I just didn't get what the big deal was with the convergence group.
By 75% I was actually getting mad. So many of the decisions made by the MCs were strange to me. I didn't understand their reasoning.
At 83% it became a struggle to even finish the book. The action went from bad to horrible and I couldn't find the "feel good" I wanted from the story.
Bottom line is that I believe this is a good YA paranormal romance plot, but I personally couldn't buy into the MCs. I felt detached and confused by them the whole time.
This is book 1 in a series. It doesn't necessarily end in a cliffhanger, but romance readers will be screaming for the next book.
I'm going to edge this into my 2.5 star category.
The Convergence has all the elements any reader would want. It's straight in with the action, there's a little mystery, some special abilities (which are really cool and relatively limitless) and the plot is interesting. However, there are also some elements which are a little predictable, like beautiful characters - maybe I'm weird, but I like my characters a little crooked; a little more real life, a little less supermodel. I guess what was missing for me was just the complexity of the characters though, because the rest, well I shamelessly liked it a whole lot!
Desiree doesn't really like Blake all that much, but she tolerates him in a "keeping an eye on him" kind of way. Because there is something a bit off about him. And it's not just the constant and slightly suspicious number of questions he keeps firing at her. In fact, Desiree has learned to keep people like Blake at arms length, because she has a few secrets of her own - super human strength can be difficult to hide, especially around the accident prone!
The story progresses quickly, as Desiree's secrets unfold around her and she digs up more about others like her. I really liked the concept of a converter (someone with crazy abilities we all wish we had!), and the scope for loads of development with that idea; these kinds of worlds are always super interesting to me.
This series has so much potential to be explosive in terms of characters, their various abilities and the way the plot could unravel. I would have liked to see less typical characters with a little more fire, because complex characters, and their relationships actually, are more interesting when they are unexpected. This story does strike a little of "special girl meets special boy". But with so much potential, this story really could go anywhere and that's exciting!
This was actually an interesting book and one of the things I liked about it was the pulse racing story line with a wonderful cliffhanger being clean enough I could recommend it to middle school age kids though it comes under the YA genre. Librarians and teachers could easily have this on their reading lists or in their rooms without causing an uproar. The action scenes should appeal to a wide range of people along with the suspense and sci fi themes. The twists will keep you hooked through to the end and leave you wanting to check out the next book in the series.
Tenille Berezay writes well and keeps the pace moving as she develops her characters through this interesting and unique plot. Despite it being a sci fi novel she embedded enough realism in her characters they and their actions seemed plausible even the relationship between Desiree and Blake flowed with the story instead of taking you out of it. It did start off a bit slow but if you stick with it the payoff makes it worth it.
The author did a great job with this book. It has just the right amount of Sci Fi/Fantasy that almost anyone would enjoy it. Also, the plot of the story held it's own and felt original. The relationships in the story felt authentic and not hurried like they do in most young adult books.
Almost every chapter ended in a cliff hanger that pulled you through and made me want to keep reading. It was a quick read for that reason but it did not lack in details. You are given a clear view of what everything looks like and how the character is feeling but it never bogged down the story.
Unlike most young adult books, the parents of the main characters are actually good parents. Desiree is not portrayed as being perfect. She has flaws and weaknesses mixed in with her strengths which made her realistic and likeable. The relationship that blossoms for Desiree is not insta-love and is built on trust and respect.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone that likes young adult books.
