Cat About Town is the debut novel in Cate Conte’s A Cat Café Mystery series. The storyline is well plotted and this book has a great cast of characters who are well developed and affable. This steadily paced book has lots of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and there is no shortage of suspects. The reveal in this clean read came as a surprise to me.
Madalyn ‘Maddie’ James lives in San Francisco, where she is a co-owner of Goin’ Green, a successful organic juice bar. Her grandmother has been living in a full care facility for six months and Maddie has returned home to Daybreak Island, a fictional island off the coast of Massachusetts to spend time with her before she passes. She meets an orange tabby who she later names JJ, at the cemetery and they quickly bond. After her grandmother’s funeral, Maddie’s grandfather, Leopold “Leo” Mancini, shares his financial concerns with her. When Maddie learns Frank O’Malley is trying to coerce her grandfather into selling his home, she confronts and threatens him. Just before the local Food Stroll begins, JJ runs away and when Maddie catches up with him in Jade Moon’s vendor tent, they soon discover Frank with an ice pick in his back. Both Maddie and her grandfather become suspects even though Officer Craig Tomlin, her old boyfriend, knows they aren’t murderers. With the help of her friend and local newspaper editor, Becky Walsh, Maddie begins to investigate, learns Frank wasn’t very well liked, and uncovers secrets about multiple people. She also discovers she and Craig still have feelings for each other and she and Lucas Davenport, a new to the area business owner, are attracted to each other.

Cat About Town by Cate Conte is a purr-fect book.
I felt a connection with the main character, Maddie James right from the start.
With the story opening at a funeral and her grandfather asking for help, I was intrigued from the beginning.
Some prominent people in this quaint New England town are being killed. When Maddie's grandpa becomes a suspect, she begins to sort the pieces of the mystery, putting the puzzle together swiftly and accurately.
The ending was fantastic and I absolutely love J.J.
As a cat lover it's always fun to read about the animals and all their quirky antics.
I definitely give this book 5 paws up.
