Officer Miranda Rader called to the scene of a murder and as she investigates finds links to her past.
Her name was "Randi" then, and she escaped an abduction but no one believed her.
I enjoyed the read but didn't feel the adrenaline-pumping tension that would have made it great.
There was action and suspense but nothing to get the anxiety up. The characters were well developed, with realistic dialogue. Would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a calm and relaxing read.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of The Other Girl in exchange for my honest review.
This is the first book I have read by Erica Spindler and although I found the synopsis interesting, the plot and characters fell flat for me. I enjoyed the narration switching back in forth in time with current day detective Miranda and teenage Randi. However the twists and ending were predictable and contrived. I was bothered by the silly mistakes Miranda made as an allegedly "ten year veteran" "best in the department" police officer. This book would be a good quick read maybe more for someone new to the mystery genre.
4 stars! This was a gripping and addictive page-turner!
This was my first experience reading an Erica Spindler book and it definitely won’t be my last - her writing had me addicted to this novel from the very first chapter. I was completely drawn into the story and hanging on every word to find out what was going to happen next. I really liked the main character, Miranda Rader, a small-town police officer with a past she thought was behind her. The shifting of writing in past and present was done very well – just enough information given within each segment to keep me hungrily reading for more details.
It was refreshing reading such a fast paced, well written thriller after having read some heavier family and historical dramas lately. It’s nice to change it up sometimes and I’m so glad I tried this book out considering it is not my usual genre. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast-paced, police drama.
A big thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Erica Spindler for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Officer Miranda Rader of the Hammond PD is an honest cop with integrity but when she's called in to process the murder scene of a university professor, the past she thought was behind her is now back. Miranda has to investigate the murder of the professor however her integrity is being questioned and a small town is shaken. During the investigation, Miranda discovers a piece of evidence that will cause her to change direction which leads her down a path of pain, sorrow, and forgiveness. On her journey, another murder takes place which creates more trouble for Miranda, a lot of doubt and the question, why is she being targeted?
This is the first book I've ever read by Erica Spindler and it will not be the last. I read this book in less than 24 hours and I was on the edge of my seat a few times. It didn't take long for me to get into the story and it was hard to put it down. I was so wrapped up in the book I could feel Miranda's pain and I just wanted to be a friend who believed in her. This was a very good read and I would recommend it to anyone.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book. I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this latest Erica Spindler novel and found it to have a touch of everything good in a book, suspense, twists, excitement and even a touch of romance.
The novel features Officer Miranda Rader of the Hammond PD in Louisiana who is known for her honesty, integrity, and steady hand in a crisis, but that was not always the case. She has tried hard to change from the young troubled girl and earn respect in her position as an officer.
When Miranda and her partner are called to investigate the murder of one of the town’s most beloved college professors, they’re unprepared for the scene. This murder is unlike any they’ve ever investigated, and just when Miranda thinks she’s seen the worst of it, she finds a piece of evidence that chills her to the core, a faded newspaper clipping about a terrible night from her long-buried past. Then another man turns up dead, this one a retired cop, and not just any cop, Clint Wheeler, the cop who took her statement that night. Two murders, two very different men, two killings that on the surface had nothing in common, except Miranda. 15 years ago.
A very good read that flew by due to the excitement and eagerness to learn the truth.
I would like to thank Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book I have read by Erica Spindler and although it was interesting, it wasn't my favorite. I really enjoy thrillers and suspense, but I am not really a fan of police based thrillers. But the synopsis sounded interesting, so I decided to read it.
Our main character Miranda Radar is an officer in Louisiana, but she came from a very small town where she had a rather rough and traumatic past. Miranda and her partner are called to the murder of one of the town's most loved and well respected college professors, where she finds a piece of evidence linking her traumatic past to the murder.
The book is filled with action and suspense, I just personally didn't really like the police story line. I felt like I was reading an episode of Law and Order or a similar show. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just not really my style. Miranda as a character is a fairly strong and likeable woman, as are most of the other characters, who are mostly other detectives and police officers. I enjoyed the author's writing and the plot does move along at a fairly steady pace, although slightly predictable at times. I am sure that fans of Spindler and/or police/detective books will really like this book.
Thank you to the publisher for sending me an ARC.
This was a fast paced, and well put together "whodunit" kind of thriller that will keep you glued to the pages and guessing at every turn! I loved these characters, even if I did find myself occasionally wanting to shake Miranda for not following proper police procedure and rushing head-long into things (which as you know typically does not end well).
There were times when I thought I had everything figured out, only to have my suppositions shattered within the next few pages. There were several good twists and turns that make this story well worth the read. Usually I find stories that jump between past and present events hard to follow, however thankfully, that was not the case with this one. The author presented it in such a way that not only made it easy to follow, but also that helped add detail to the "present" story.
Overall, I am sure this story will definitely appeal to those who enjoy a good thriller novel, and I would read more from this author!

This was my first read by this Author, I was impressed and wondering why I have never read one of her previous books. I certainly will be taking a dive into the world of Erica Spindler from now on. It was hard to put down and got through it super quickly.
Review will post on The Dew on release date. http://dewonthekudzu.com
I came across this author's books a few years back and she has become one of my favorite authors. She doesn't disappoint in her new book, The Other Girl, Her writing is fast paced and engrossing. Once you start reading you don't want to put down because you want to find out what comes next.
Randi and her partner are called in to investigate the murder of a college professor in town. They are from a small town with a small police force. The professor who was murdered comes from a prestigious family and the way he was murdered led them to believe he was into something sexual. As the story unfolds more Randi remembers something that happened to her as a teen and why she became a cop. Suspenseful twists keep you turning the pages. Loved this story.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I must say that I LOVE Erica Spindler, so I was thrilled to be able to read and review this one. It did not disappoint. The plot is intriguing with just the right amount of murder, mystery and suspense. I did figure out the murderer, but I had no idea how the plot would unfold. Great read!
This was the first book by Erica Spindler that I have read and I can't understand how I could have missed her previously. This was a very, very fast read I could not put the book down, I started reading it last night and a few hours later I was finished. I loved Miranda as well as the other characters. I also loved Erica's writing style and how she pulls you into the pages.
This was a great thriller that I would recommend to all the thriller readers out there.
A big thanks to St. Martin’s Press via Netgalley for the copy, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to read more of Erica Spindler in the future.
Erica is one of my favorite authors and I love the way that she writes books. The Other Girl was no exception. I was caught up from the time I opened the first page. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. WOW
An entertaining crime novel with some unexpected twists and enough character development to keep the reader interested. Not great literature but a compelling distraction.
I am an Erica Spindler fan and really enjoy her novels. The Other Girl is no exception. Miranda, a police detective in the small town of Harmony, Louisiana, is called to a murder scene. And it is particularly brutal. A college professor has been murdered in his own home and after just a bit of initial investigation, the list of suspects grows long - including Miranda. The stirs goes back and forth between the parent day and the past, when Miranda was on the opposite side of the law and a teen in trouble. It all comes together as town-and-gown politics force the investigation in one direction, Miranda's ethics are tested and the murders mount it is a good read and the characters drive the story. There are enough plot twists to keep readers guessing to the end. Well worth the investment.
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It's very well written and the story is easy to follow. But the characters are all over the place. The "good guys" break police procedure as often as the bad. The plot is basically the lead character being hysterical. It was good enough to finish the book but not enough to want to buy it.
With an engaging opening and my kind of crime (creepy, ritualistic murder), this should be catnip. Unfortunately, I found the characters paper-thin and unrealistic. I only made it 1/3 of the way through.
