An inheritance of curses by Dee. J. Holmes.
The Four Houses: Book 1.
Driven by a lust for powerful blood, the first LeFey plunged the Four Houses of Magic into a century of conflict. Survivors of the Great War, desperate to repair their tattered worlds, signed a treaty banning any contact between the Houses of fae, werewolf, vampire and witch. And for over a thousand years that treaty has held strong...
Haunted by the dark talents she once embraced, Rose LeFey is determined to confront her manipulative aunt and prove she’s finished with blood magic. Instead, she finds a basement full of prisoners and a false-mate bond with an insanely attractive, and utterly forbidden, werewolf.
As lust tears into her hard-earned self-control, Rose realizes the werewolf was bait. Her aunt wants to unleash war on the magical Houses and humans alike—with Rose at her side. To stop that from happening, Rose must deny both her own deadly powers and the temptation to turn the false mate-bond real.
An ok read. Likeable story and characters. 3*.

This was a very interesting story with an unpredictable cast of characters. Vampires, witches, face and werewolves come together in this story to take down an evil witch hell bent on power. I was wrapped up in the story from the first moment rose entered the shop and found them all trapped in a witches evil web. I was not expecting the love that blossomed between a witch and a wolf. Nor was i expecting their to be an adventure as they went against everything they been told about the four houses. This is a unique story and one that i will be sure to pick up the rest of the series for as i want to see what happens next. The one con i did find is their a lot of action but the descriptions of the world were vague and i would of like to have more descriptions so I could really picture in my head where the story was going.

DJ Holmes spins a novel of magic, war, and intrigue. Rose is running. Running for the dark talents that cling to her like burs on wool. What she doesn't expect is to fall into a totally different type of dark: werewolves.

I admit, I didn't have much hope for this one. I mean, you've read one werewolf book, you've read them all. I've read Samantha Young, Suzanne Wright, and multiple other werewolf novels, I get the gist. There's your: sexy alpha werewolf who is determined to never find a mate and somehow finds some wild feisty girl that everyone is love with. ya? Thankfully, An inheritance of curses IS NOT that. Rose doesn't find some alpha-licious mate, oh no. What she finds is BAIT, and she's the unfortunate sucker. Who set the bait? Why werewolves? What does this mean? Falsities, deception and harsh truths play out in an intriguing story of the dark.

Rose was a witch who had strong powers and talented in blood magic but she refused to use them because of her past. She also suffered from self doubt. Rose has a lot of inner monologues and this showed her personality. Dar is a werewolf who is trying to do better than the expectations given to him by the pack on being the next possible alpha. But his local store keep likes him and imports speciality foods just so he gets a taste of the world beyond his territory. Raina is a princess of the fae and will do anything for her family. Sebastian is a smart butt vampire. Her aunt Sorcha wants her to embrace her powers and join Sorcha in her quest for power. Her aunt kidnaps Dar, Raina and Sebastian and has them chained up down in her cellar. Rose goes down in the cellar and finds Dar,Sebastian, and raina chained up and Rise releases them. They all decide to try together to stop Sorcha before she hurts even more people. Dar and Rose are put under a spell that binds them. The bond is caused by the spell and not naturally. .Also Jullian is causes conflict for Dar and Rose romance.
I enjoyed this book. I liked the paranormal aspect of this. I also liked the plot and the fast pace. This had my attention all through the book. But I also was confused at times. This book had: suspense, action, adventure, mystery, intrigue, vampires. witches, werewolves, fairies, a power hungry witch, a spell, blood magic and so much more. Reading this was almost like being on a rollercoaster ride. I did feel there were unanswered questions still after the book had ended and I didn’t like that. The repetition in this annoyed me at times. I would have liked more backstory om Rose and her family. I really liked how Rose gradually grew and came to accept her magic. I liked the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I recommend.

The story is about fairies and the main character's name is Rose LeFey. That probably tells you what you need to know about this book. I admittedly did not finish it, but I did not find anything unexpected, un trope-y, or unusual to distinguish it from the many other YAish urban fantasy books about the chosen one who is given a lot of authority, needs to prove herself, and also has several hot guys to choose from. YMMV.

I am so glad that my first review back from my hiatus was this book! From start to finish there was always something happening that it kept me engrossed in the story the entire time! I really like the characters and surprisingly there wasn't one I didn't dislike, except for the bad guy but you kinda have to dislike them so its okay. The writing was easy and the story with it's fast progression was never confusing or disorienting. Never once did I have to go back any pages to make sure I didn't miss anything. I like Holmes's writing, she makes you want to root the main characters on and the world she has created with the 4 houses (Fae, Werewolf, Witch, and Vampire) is enthralling.

So far the use of magic (blood magic in particular) was what I always thought magic to be so while it was fantasy it was realistic to me, well realistic a story set in modern times with magical creatures can be. The book left me wanting more and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel.

While I really like the book there are a couple of things stopping me from completely falling in love with it. First the beginning was slightly confusing as it treated the main character, Rose, like we should have known what was going one. We eventually got the backstory as the story progressed but it was a bit weird for me. Second, while yes Rose and Dar had this spell that bonded them together the horniness was a bit too much sometimes. Like really Rose, do you need to stare at Dar's butt and comment on it while this really important matter is happening? Lastly, The final battle and ending were a bit on the lackluster side and abrupt. Here we have this big baddie and it's just over after spending the entire book traveling and seeing the chaos she can do. Plus, what's happening at the end? While we get a tiny little hint about what's coming in the second book, I just expected something more. Maybe it's just me not wanting the story to end.

Well, whatever it was I can't wait until the sequel is out.

I've started and stopped this book more than a dozen times and I just cannot get into it. It's not bad, it's just not capturing my attention at all.

A fast paced read from start to finish! I barely had time to catch my breath. There was no let up as it was one crisis after another. The story was well fleshed out, however I thought that Rose's backstory could have played a bigger part. What happened in the past to sully the LeFay name? What exactly happened with Carlos? What did Julian have to cover up? The evolution of Rose was a thing of beauty, by the end of the book she was a different person. One who had finally comes to terms with her magic, was respectful of it, and was no longer scared of it. I am also very interested in seeing where the romance goes between darrius and Rose. They were attracted to each other before the binding, I'm sure of it. I can't wait to see what happens. Great book.

Fell in love with this book after the first two chapters. The characters had a great chemistry with each other. Sebastian was wonderfully obvious and Rose quirky enough that I found myself laughing out loud. The story moves at an steady pace, is well written and has an interesting plot. I look forward to the next book in the series, and am placing this one on my favorites shelf.
