Charlotte Hubbard and the Promise Loge series are totally new to me, and while this new order of Amish seemed to be more liberal than the Old Order books I have read before, it certainly did not stop me from enjoying the story.
I give full credit to the author for introducing mental health issues into the book, as it seems like one of the subjects that Anish Romance tends to stay away from. I also really enjoyed the spin of Bishop Monroe Burkholder (and main love interest) having secrets, it gives this book that thrilling little morsel that we all want to read in a romance book. The idea of Monroe and Christine fall in love with each other (basically) at first sight is also a wonderful breath of fresh air, and I loved it.
This book really surprised me as I tend to be more traditional in my Christian fiction, but if you only read one Amish romance this year, I totally recommend Weddings at Promise Lodge.
I give Wedding at Promise Lodge 4 stars.
Christine and her sisters Mattie and Rosetta sold their farms to but Promise Lodge and start a new community, a community that spousal abuse wasn’t tolerated and peace was the promise of living there. Christine was at her sister Mattie’s wedding and Christine was happy for Maddie especially with getting a second chance at love with her husband. Christine was very attracted to Bishop Monroe Burkholder and she hoped he was just as attracted to her. Christine s a widow with two daughters who were young women. Christine was Amish as were all the people at Promise Lodge. Monroe asked Christine if he could spend the day with her and he had some important decisions he wanted to discuss with Christine. Monroe’s preachers for hsi people were Eli and Amos who was now Christine's brother in law. But Amos had some doubts about the new Bishop and after awhile Monroe would go to Amos about his doubts. Christine was a widow for two years and two daughters who were now young women- Laura and Phoebe.
I couldn’t really get into this book. I usually love a good Amish novel. I just couldn’t connect with the characters. This didn’t hold my interest like most Amish novels do. I am sure others will love this. It just wasn’t for me.
I enjoyed this book. It was a good story, I enjoyed the nice clean story line and the suspense that was included. but I also felt like this is a series that needs to be read in order. There were times when I wondered what they were talking about because i had not read the previous titles, although I will go back and read them.
I recommend this book to all readers it is a nice clean read that keeps you wondering what could go wrong next.
Thank you Netgalley and Kensington, Zebra books for allowing me to read this title for an honest review.
Interesting and Entertaining
When you find a novel by Charlotte Hubbard, you know you’ve found a fun treat. Such was the case when I happened upon her latest release, Weddings at Promise Lodge. It’s a great little novel to end the summer.
Weddings at Promise Lodge takes readers back to Promise Lodge and its famous Bender sisters. Christine is smitten with a widowed newcomer, Bishop Monroe Burkholder. But when a woman from his old church shows up at Promise Lodge claiming that Monroe “ruined” her, the drama begins.
I was given Weddings at Promise Lodge in exchange for my honest review. While it can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading them in order as many storylines, including how Promise Lodge came into being, are established in previous novels. I thoroughly enjoyed the sweet romances made at Promise Lodge, but was caught a bit off guard by the unconventional ways of the Promise Lodge church. The characters were openly amorous with one another, and even a bit suggestive. I would say this is more of a Christian fiction novel, rather than an Amish genre novel. That being said, I found the storylines interesting and entertaining.
I absolutely love reading Charlotte's books. She hooks the reader from the start and did not disappoint with this book.
A nice read. This title is an easy one to recommend to older patrons.
I received an arc copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I did not read the other books in the series so I did have a little trouble following some parts but I do love Amish stories!
Weddings at Promise Lodge by Charlotte Hubbard is the third book in the Promise Lodge series. Promise Lodge is growing with new families and businesses arriving. Amos Troyer’s twin daughters along with their husbands are moving to Promise Lodge to live and open a nursery and greenhouses. Mattie Bender and Amos Troyer are finally getting married (it is about time). The newly arrived Bishop Monroe Burkholder is presiding over the ceremony. Christine Bender found herself attracted to Monroe and is looking forward to spending more time with him. Amos is wary of Monroe because he feels that their new bishop is hiding something (a feeling). Everyone is at Roman and Mary Kate’s wedding when an unexpected arrival interrupts the festivities. A young woman, Leola Duff bursts into the lodge declaring that Monroe “ruined her” and that they must marry. The male leaders in the community want answers, but Monroe is being evasive. Christine does not doubt that there is a logical explanation for Leola’s remarks and that Monroe will tell all when the time is right (in God’s own perfect timing, not theirs). But will the community understand and still accept Monroe when he enlightens them? Come to Promise Lodge in Weddings at Promise Lodge to visit with old friends, meet the newcomers, and catch up on the gossip
Weddings at Promise Lodge contains good writing. Ms. Hubbard’s writing style makes for a novel that is pleasurable to read. I thought the novel had a good pace and a beautiful setting. There are a significant number of characters that can be hard to keep straight. It gets easier the further you get into the story. The book contains lovely, Christian characters. I am amazed at how they welcome strangers into their community and the depth of their compassion, kindness and patience (something I lack). Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone was so accepting and welcoming in real life? I was not a fan of Leola Duff. I do not know how the community dealt with her antics. I would have sent her packing within twenty-four hours. I rate Weddings at Promise Lodge 4 out of 5 stars. While Weddings at Promise Lodge can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading the books in order. You will understand why the Bender sisters and Amos Troyer decided to start their own community. It will also provide you with the background details on the main characters. I like the Promise Lodge community because it is not as strict as Amish districts in Amish novels. They are receptive to all Christians. While Weddings at Promise Lodge has some predictability, there are some unexpected surprises. At the end of the story, we are left wondering what will happen next time. Weddings at Promise Lodge is a little racy compared to normal Amish/Christian novels. There is some kissing and intimate innuendos which is not the norm in an Amish book (just giving you a heads up). I liked the lessons of holding a person accountable for their actions, importance of communication, and appearances can be deceiving. There are recipes at the end of Weddings at Promise Lodge and a preview of A Simple Wish.
Weddings at Promise Lodge is book number 3 in the Promise Lodge series. Even though I haven't read the other 2 books in the series I had no problem following along and picking up the story. This is one of my favorite Amish authors, Charlotte Hubbard. She writes books that are fun, entertaining and full of understanding compassion.I look forward to reading many more books by her.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third book in a series and the first book of the series that I've read. It can stand alone, but it would read better if the previous books had been in my reading list.
Three sisters have bought what used to be a church camp and a few other plain folk have bought land around it to make a new settlement.
Mattie and Christine are widowed sisters, and Rosette is older, but never married. Mattie ties her knot first with Amos, one of the preachers. Christine and Rosette both have beaux lined up for their own nuptials. Christine is going to marry Munroe--the new bishop, and Rosette is going to marry Truman--a Mennonite.
The only problem is a couple of flies in the ointment--Leola thinks she's in love with Munroe, and Maria has known Truman for most of her life, and both women interrupt the road to true love for Christine and Rosette.
Charlotte Hubbard has put quite a bit of humor and misadventure in the Weddings at Promise Lodge. She uses the humor to keep the reader involved in the story and to keep the reader entertained, and she does it with aplomb. I truly enjoyed this book and hated to see it end. I wish now I'd read the previous ones.
Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a wedding pie
My thanks to Kensington/Zebra publishing for allowing me to read and review this boo
Weddings at Promise Lodge is the 3rd book in the Promise Lodge series. This is also the 3rd book I have read. Charlotte Hubbard has done an amazing job with this series. You feel like you at at Promise Lodge. The characters in the book feel like friends at this point. You take a deep look into the lives of this little group of people. It's hard to believe that this book and these people are fiction. Charlotte makes them seem so real. This is my favorite book so far in the series, but I also said that after I finished book 1 and again after book to so when book 4 comes along I am sure I will say it again. The strange part is this is not usually the type of story I read, but I am hooked.
In Weddings at Promise Lodge the book starts out with Mattie and Preacher Amos finally getting married. Christine and the new Bishop's relationship is really kicking into overdrive. Rosetta and Truman are still plugging along and talk to the Bishop about marrying them, even though she will be marrying out of their religion. Truman is a Mennonite.
All sounds good and happy until new people and problems show up at Promise Lodge. Preacher Amos is a bit skeptical about the new Bishop already but when a young woman Leola shows up pronouncing she is to marry him and that he has ruined her, the questions and doubts really start flying from Preacher Amos, but Christine stays steadfast in her loyalty to Bishop Monroe Burkholder and knows things will work out for them. There is something wrong with Leola though and everyone can see it but Amos. She has run away from home without her medication. So the Bender sisters band together to take care of Leola until her family can be reached and she be returned home.
Then a beautiful blond girl Maria shows up. She wants to rent one of the apartments and bring her bakery building to Promise Lodge. Immediately Rosetta gets a bad feeling, especially when she sees how chummy Truman is with her.
This book really runs the gambit of emotions, more so then with the other 2 books. There is love, loss, jealousy, happiness, sadness and so much more. It is a real rollercoaster, that I would love to ride again. I cannot wait for the 4th book.
One of the things that I've liked about this series are the unconventional characters.
I've absolutely loved the three Bender sisters, Mattie, Christine and Rosetta. Their dreams of starting a new colony, with the help and spiritual guidance from Preacher Amos have become a reality with more people moving to Promise Lodge and starting new businesses.
They are warm and welcoming to everyone and have formed friendships with most of the new arrivals.
I found newcomer, Bishop Monroe Burkholder kind of off putting at first, but after a few chapters I liked that he was a lot less stuffy than I'd expected a bishop to be and enjoyed his flirtation with Christine.
The arrival of Leola and Maria creates quite a bit of friction in and around the lodge as relationships are tested, but with faith and prayer things will work out the way they're meant to.
There's a busyness that I love at the lodge, wedding planning, wedding ceremonies, cooking, building homes and businesses and anything else that's needed to turn dreams into reality.
I've been a longtime fan of the authors work so I'm not surprised that I've liked this series so much and I think other readers of Amish fiction will, too.
Don't forget to check out the recipes included at the end of the book.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Netgalley and have given my honest opinion.
We again visit the sisters at Promise Lodge. I love Mattie, Christine, and Rosetta. Promise Lodge and all of it's inhabitants have become family to not only one another but to myself as well.
This book begins with the wedding of Mattie and Amos. Christine and Monroe really want to be next, however, due to an unexpected visitor, their romance is in jeopardy. Will Monroe be able to clear the air? Meanwhile, Rosetta and Truman want to marry. Will the new Bishop object? The reader visits old friends, finds some new, and says goodbye to some we love. You will not be disappointed.
I received a copy through Netgalley. The review is done completely on my own since I love this story.
Could Promise Lodge sound any more perfect? Do they have problems? Yes, but the perfect part of it is they solve it as a neighborhood family.
Christine Bender, one of the founding sisters of Promise Lodge has fell in love with the new Bishop. Until, Leola, a young woman from Bishop Monroe's home community comes to live at Promise Lodge. She claims she loves him and he has to marry her since "he ruined her". No one can put their finger on it but something seems very off with Leola and her claims. Will the truth come out and set Bishop Monroe free to marry Christine?
I enjoyed this Amish novel for the different aspect it provided. Most Amish novels I have read frown up a Mennonite and Amish furthering their relationship to possible marriage and this one did not. The people of Promise Lodge let Mennonite and Amish live within the same community. Very well done. Acceptance at its finest.
I have not read the previous two novels in this series but that did not slow me down one bit. I was able to follow along and understand who was who. You can bet I will be running to the library to get the first two as soon as I can. This series has piqued my interest big time. I am already looking forward to the next one and this one has yet to publish.
Charlotte Hubbard has provided peace and feelings of acceptance with the Promise Lodge community. Sometimes we all just need a little of that in our lives.
Thank you to NetGalley and Zebra (Kensington Books) for an ARC of this book. Any and all opinions are my own.
Weddings at Promise Lodge is a well written book. I enjoyed the plot and cast of characters.
Weddings at Promise Lodge is the third book in n the Promise Lodge series written by Charlotte Hubbard. I have not read the other two but did not have an issue picking this one up as a stand-alone.
The characters are very welcoming and it is easy to follow their story. Bishop Monroe who is calm and open to the changes the community wants to take is introduced in this book. He is calm, understanding, and not afraid to encourage his community to make changes.
The story opens with a wedding and there are others that are paired up facing marriage before the book ends. There is some added mystery plots that put a bump in the road for one couple when a mystery girl, Leola, shows up with a story that Amos must discover the truth behind.
I received an advance reader copy of this book from netgalley in return for my honest opinion of the book.
Outstanding book, I love this series. Love all the characters in it..I got lost in the story and finished it with in one day. If you was looking forward to u have a right to be. The description were right on . You will love this story..I recommend this book I will talk about it with others.
Weddings at Promise Lodge is ranking right up there as one of my favorite books so far this year! It is such a treat to re visit Christine, Mattie and Rosetta and to see how their new lives and community in Promise Lodge is expanding. And, this time around, to read about Christine and her blossoming relationship with the new bishop, Monroe. Christine, a widow with two young adult daughters, and Monroe, a widower, shared an instant attraction and connection to each other upon his arrival at Promise Lodge. However, this connection is potentially threatened by the arrival of a young lady from Monroe's former community- unless Monroe can bring everyone, especially Amos, one of the preachers, to the understanding that nothing possibly could have happened between him and Leola. We also re visit Amos and Mattie in their relationship and their new marriage, and Rosetta and Truman as they hope to plan their marriage with Monroes' blessing. There are so many special and meaningful relationships that develop and strengthen in this story. Charlotte Hubbard is a truly gifted writer, and as always, I cannot wait to see what she writes next!
