I love this series! It's my comfort reading for when I'm travelling: the short length makes me feel like I can get stuck into a story even if I don't have much time, the chattiness is comforting, and it's an easy (though not dumb) read.
The characters, from my favourite to least favourite:
Michelle, a book editor who's just getting into BDSM after a divorce. She feels real to me, and deals with her problems like an adult. She gets into difficult situations through no fault of her own, and while often her hands are tied (no pun intended) and things don't go as she wants them to, she's not a pushover.
Taneesha, who works as a games company and ends up dealing with all kinds of Male Bullshit including getting doxed. I don't usually like descriptions of characters' clothing and hairstyles, but she's a badass black woman and I liked when she got dolled up.
Aditi, an author whose debut novel is about to be published. I thought I'd identify with Aditi most as she's a writer, but she frustrated me. She's such a brat, and whines whenever Michelle (her editor) asks her how her second novel is going because whhhhhyyyy should she have to write? (Because you're a writer, bitch. Get it done.)
Christina, a PA to a Hollywood movie star. She doesn't feel real to me, and neither does her boss/lover, Vivi.
Elli, a cosplayer. If I didn't know better, I'd think Elli was 12 years old. I couldn't relate to her at all and found her childish and annoying.
The books are a nice mix of all the characters, and towards the end I feel like they focused more on Michelle and Taneesha, which suited me because they were the best characters. I hope there's a season 2.
While I definitely enjoyed my experience reading this book, there are some issues with pacing and character development in the middle that left me wanting just a bit more.
For the first time I notice the characters are on the cover, but I can’t tell who’s who yet.
This episode was more sad than the others. Everyone’s life gets worse, though not everyone is in it.
A great quick read, that's feminist and true-to-life. We're all hiding secrets and struggles, but great friends can help us get through even the worst storms!
I reaaally wanted to like these but they just did not work for me. Too light, too vapid.
Moving into episode 3, Boss Battles, we go a little deeper into the lives of Taneesha, Aditi, and Elli. Every time we pull back a layer on Aditi, I wonder when we will get to the bottom of all she's holding as a person. We also learn that while Elli's methods might be a little untraditional, she gets the job done. Too bad society hasn't figured out a way to hone in on creative people who don't fit the mold.
Boss Battles brings on the family and relationships. Taneesha's brother is playing matchmaker, Aditi and her spouse get to juggle in-laws who don't quite understand them, and Elli's parents put their foot down regarding her non-cosplay work ethic. Still fun and flirty, with lots of build up for adventures coming soon.
This was my favorite "episode" so far. I loved seeing more of Aditi's and Taneesha's life. As with the other two - found myself reaching the end far too quickly. Would like to be a little longer!
First off I have to say if you identify yourself as a Geek Girl, then this is the series for you as it covers all aspects and even better if you find you don't have much time to read, each book is a quick read. In Boss Battles, it's time to spend some quality time and get to know the character's families. Taneesha who is still going through a hard time with her job is out and about with her brother and checking out a local gaming store. Her brother decides to give it a shot and set Taneesha up with the hot store owner Diego. Will this be the excitement that Taneesha needs to take her mind off her job? Elli has quit yet another job and is busy making her costume for her latest convention, except this time her parents are pulling out the big guns and threatening to cut her off if she doesn't start to take the adult world seriously and get a real job. Arditi we had seen from the first book that she was cheating on her husband and I wondered if they were swingers but turns out her husband who is her best friend is a closet gay. What will happen when her husband's parents come to stay, and Arditi must pretend to be the perfect and dutiful wife? We read a little bit of Melissa's side with her one night stand after her ex-husband Ted shows up with some new arm candy and Melissa feeling intimidated ends up in another man's arms and of course, there is growing tension between Melissa and Arditi with the release of her new book which is slowly getting there. I am enjoying this serial and look forward to reading more in the Geek Actually series and seeing how the characters develop over time.
Current story of females in today's world. Super fast read that will keep your attention.
Here we learn more about Elli and her lack of "adulting". I love she is a cosplayer (a little sad she's a bit of the stereotypical loser nerd...I hope this changes).I am looking forward to learning more about these chic geeks!
Again, this is a fun series but for some reason it's just not entirely clicking with me. I think partially because the only characters I really like are Taneesha and sometimes Aditi. When I'm reading Michelle's bits I'm always like she needs to relax and Christina and Elli need to grow up. I know that's on purpose, like their characters are supposed to be like that, and it's good that women are allowed to be portrayed as having flaws and you know, being human, but also they remind me of people that I know in real life who drive me up the wall so it's not very enjoyable reading about them. I don't know, I might continue this series if they do some kind of bundle sale when it's all finished, but I'm not a huge fan of the serial format and for me paying $2 for 35ish pages is kind of ridiculous, you would end up paying $26 for what essentially amounts to two shortish books by the end of it. Anyway, definitely a cool idea and there are some good parts, but I'm just not feeling it in this case.
I really thought these books would be right up my alley, but I just didn't care for them. Not sure if it was the switching between characters, or the voices in general, but I just couldn't really get into them. I found myself bored.
This episode was beyond hilarious! Strong character development makes it easy to relate to these complex women. As they navigate interesting tensions, their friendship remains an anchor.
The very short novella continues in Episode 3. I still feel like i am missing some character development but that could come. I do like how this one does focus a little on one specific character. Maybe these types of short stories are not for me. Might be best if there was one character per episode with their chat story in the middle.
