Three woman. Three very different women. They have different lives, different problems and different struggles.
One is a career woman in a world dominated by men. Another is a care giver and homemaker putting on flash dinner parties. And the third a party girl heavily into drinking, cocaine and men.
As the economy crashes so do their lives.
It's an addictive read. It's one of those books that you find yourself thinking about even when you aren't reading it. For me that means it deserves the 4 stars because it had me doing just that. Also, there is a clever twist at the end. Nope not talking read it and find out for yourself.
Enjoy!
Unfortunately I had to DNF this one. I really struggled to get into it and struggled with the format.
It is worth reading to the second part of this novel. Personally, I felt the characters were not people who I could care about, perhaps I am too old or too uncool for this novel.
A gripping novel that hooks you from the beginning. Regan has the ability to draw in the reader through the intriguing plot and interesting characters. Definitely a recommended read that suspense lovers will devour!
This book tells the alternating stories of three women. Liz is a career focused woman in the world of finance, which is dominated by men. She struggles to prove herself not only in her work, but also her personal life. Betsy is the motherly figure whose time is mostly devoted to caring for her disabled mother, yet she somehow manages to host elaborate dinner parties for her friends. Ellie is the party girl, who loves cocaine and men. As the economy crashes, so do the women's lives. Are the women too far gone to turn their lives around?
This one was just OK for me. It had me in the beginning and I'll admit that I didn't see the clever twist coming. Some of the actions of the women were a little shocking, but this adds to detailing the downward spiral of their lives. For me, I found that the story dragged a bit and I almost gave up on it.
Even though the writing and characters are great I found the story a bit boring as a lot was repeatable but from different views. The great thing about this book is if you have no knowledge of the drug world then this is the book to read, from not only your friends reaction to drug abuse but the appearance of the human body and what it does to you. The ending leaves you wondering what will happen next but I guess the next book will go on to explain that.
Found the book dragged on, seemed to get the characters mixed up. I got confused over who was having an affair between them all and I am sure the names changed half way through!
I admit that it took me a little bit to get into this book, but I am SO glad I stuck to it, such a good book!
The story follows 3 main characters: Betsy, Liz and Ellie, and the way that their worlds collide basically when sh*t hits the fan. I loved the way the story was written, and I did not see that plot twist coming at all!
Highly recommend this book, and will definitely read this author again.
Thank you to NetGalley, Jenni Regan, and the publisher for providing me with a free copy of this book.
This book was incredibly difficult to put down. The twists are executed perfectly and it's excellently plotted.
Thoroughly enjoyable
Three very different women with very different lives which will become intertwinned. I was interested in this book when I read the decription and I am glad I requested it. I good story about women who we can all relate to in some way. Liz, Betsy and Ellie all their own crisis to deal with in this one. There will be twists and turns that will keep the pages turning. An enjoyable read and perfect for a nice summer day when you can let all other obligations go.
The book starts well. Intriguing, characters develop well and the plot isn't straightforward. But somewhere, the possibilities are lost and it's ultimately rather dull and not the read I was expecting.
Another reviewer describes this book as great literature. It isn't. For me, it lacks any spark, character or plot development to truly engage with. It's well written, but the plotting, despite the twists, isn't very complex. If you're expecting. Read that ranks with Tolstoy, Austen, Dickens, Hemingway or Camus, a few literary 'greats', this will disappoint. It's low lightweight and I'd hoped to b more positive. Very disappointing.
I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this book. I wanted to find out how the characters came out of their current predicaments and found happiness in their lives.
The clever narrator structure completely fooled me, right up until the 'reveal'. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and would recommend it to younger readers to help with making life choices.
First line: "<i>The best performing stocks of the past decade have largely been those exposed to Britain's unprecedented property boom.</i>"
I would first like to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read this novel. I would also like to say that the cover of this novel was really what drew me in!
As for my rating, I would actually like to give this novel 3.5 stars. Before the biggest plot twist (which I did not expect at all), I was contemplating not finishing the book, simply because there was nothing really attaching me to it. Don't get me wrong, I think that the storyline had potential to be great, or even good, but it somehow fell flat for me. I didn't have any real connection to the characters or what was going on in their lives...and I think that is what really affected my liking of this book.
All in all, it had a somewhat good storyline, that I was shocked to have unveiled, but I wasn't <i>in love</i> with the novel enough to give it a higher rating. This is probably one of the first times I've ever had the desire to rate a novel with a half star.
I had a misconception about this book - the first being who Janie actually was in relation to Betsy. This may potentially ruin the story for you, so read at your own risk! <spoiler>I was sure sure <b>sure</b> that she was the daughter of Betsy, because of the initial scenes she is included in I got the perception that she was a little girl. It made sense to me that, as the daughter, she would spend weekends or a complete week with Michael...who I was under the impression was the ex-husband of Betsy.... but then I later learn she is the mother of Betsy, who has suffered some type of medical issue and can no longer care for herself. Maybe I have been confused the whole time, I don't actually know! But then this begs the question, why does the ex-husband have to share time with Janie? Or is Michael not actually the ex-husband? 'Cause I was under the impression the only family Betsy had was living in the United States. Anyways, I was thoroughly confused by this from the get-go!</spoiler>
I also thought that the ending was a little inconclusive... I was waiting for something exciting to happen, or some type of revelation to occur....but it didn't.
Jenni Regan is a new author to me, and although I wasn't overly <i>wow</i>-ed by this novel, I would consider checking out some of her other works.
Not my favourite book of the year, but a good read nevertheless. I don't feel I can write too much without spoilers, so I will say, I enjoyed meeting the characters and I wondered how they all linked in to the central group of friends. I didn't see the twist coming, and couldn't have predicted how the story of the various characters would pan out. Betsy is the mother of the group, looking after everyone, Lucy and John a bickering married couple, Tim is Betsy's friend from their student days, and Anna, with her new partner Paul, another friend. The group meet regularly at Betsy's where she cooks wonderful meals. She is also looking after her elderly mother. Anna is about to pursue her dream and open a clothes shop, helped by her friend, business woman Liz. The final strand involves party girl Ellie, who with her friend Carla, is living a party life, visiting clubs every night, meeting different men, fuelled by cocaine. How these stories come together is explosive and will keep you reading.
First half of this book had me gripped I thought I was reading about totally different characters very clever!! In the second half you realise the characters are different sides to one person ..... Everything comes together and the story unfolds . A very well written thought provoking book!!
Sorry this book was just not that special. I couldn't get into it.
DNF - With all the manipulation and sexual harassment going on at Liz's work, I thought that was an interesting angle. But the banality of too much sex, drugs and booze... that is all this story was for me when I gave up at 82%
I can honestly say I have never read a book like this one - it is totally unique in my experience, and huge in the 'wow' factor.
Knowing this was about three women, I was puzzled in the beginning to work out which three and how their lives overlapped and intertwined. However, this was soon forgotten as I became immersed in the story. This is the type of novel which is always playing on your mind even when it's not in your hand. One character made me slightly uncomfortable at first - but isn't the point of reading to expand your knowledge and experiences?
I really don't think that it would be possible for any reader to see what's coming with this book. A totally original story with believable characters and more than a few surprises along the way. Heartfelt - and heart-wrenching at times - it is nonetheless a powerful and thought provoking read.
I really cannot recommend this novel highly enough. Author Jenni Regan deserves the highest accolade for this fantastic book which everyone should be queuing up to read.
I received an arc via NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
This is one of those books that hooks you from the beginning and keeps you reading until the very end, twisting and turning with the characters and plot until you think you have everything figured out and then ... nope. Nothing is as it seems. This is a great summer read by the pool or the beach — just remember to put on the sunscreen before you start because you won't remember to once you are a few chapters in. Without giving away any of the plotting, this is a book along the lines of Behind Closed Doors, Gone Girl and Girl on the Train — starts with a scene and backs you into it through clever use of newspaper headlines, stories and the characters themselves. Set against the run-up to the global financial meltdown of 2008-2009, this is the story of another meltdown, much more personal and, in some ways, far more destructive. This book truly will take you on a roller-coaster ride and all the sounds of the kids at the pool or beachside will fade into oblivion as you come over the last hill and come crashing into the station, breathing hard and ready to be left off the exhilarating ride. This is a very good read that should be on your summer reading list.
Great read! Looking forward to reading more by this author! Highly recommend!
