This is a good read and relevant to the times we live in. Well defined characters, a good plot and it keeps you guessing. A very believable expose of how some who are privileged in their upbringing can believe nothing they do will ever cause them regret. The women portrayed in this compelling story are very well defined and arouse empathy and understanding of the challenges they face in their relationship to the male lead.
I said if my hunch was right (at 14%) on this one I was going to give it 1 Star. I'm being generous here because it was readable . . . even if HIGHLY convoluted.
Enjoyable thriller with multiple plot layers and character perspectives. Well written and hard to put down!
I'm trying to clean up my old netgalley titles. I grabbed the audiobook for Anatomy of a Scandal from the library, but am simply not interested. I listened to 30% and am going to DNF. This has great reviews, but is simply not the best fit for me as a reader - a bit too dark and gritty.
I don't have access to the book anymore. I have been using a new email for kindle for the last year. I will focus on new books instead of digging for the old files. I apologize for the inconvenience. It's not my intention to not review like this.
I really enjoyed this book! I have had this book on my shelf for years but never got around to it for some reason. I recently heard that there is now a Netflix show based on this book so I thought that this would be the perfect time to finally pick it up. I liked this book from the start and had a hard time setting it down when life got in the way. I am so glad that I finally gave this book a try.
This book is told from several different points of view. James is a married father of two that holds a prestigious position in government. Sophie is his wife who feels that she must stand behind her husband even though he hasn’t been the best partner. Kate is the lawyer who is bringing a case against James. This book is a legal thriller with much of the book occurring around events in court. In addition to the scenes in court, we see how the key players are being impacted by the case. The book also delves into the past to really give the reader all the backstory needed to understand how things evolved the way they did.
I think that the book had a realistic feel to it. It was a story of power and privilege featuring flawed characters. James was easy to hate but Sophie and Kate seemed to be trying their best to deal with the situation that they found themselves in. There were some twists and turns in the story that I did not see coming which kept me glued to the story. I thought that this book did a great job of dealing with some difficult issues in a realistic and entertaining manner.
I thought that the cast of narrators did a great job with this story. Each narrator did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. I liked having different narrators read the various points of view since it made it very clear when the perspective had shifted. They all had very pleasant voices and were able to add just the right amount of emotion to their reading.
I would definitely recommend this book to others. I was pulled into this story right away and couldn’t wait to see how things would work out for the key players. I would not hesitate to read more of this author’s work in the future.
I received a review copy of this book from Atria Books and borrowed a copy of the audiobook.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of this book.
Everyone should read this book. It may not be the best written book or be what we call literature but his book addresses questions that are not talked about. What is the definition of rape? When does No mean No? can a man and a woman in a marriage or relationship still be raped by their partner?
The context in which these questions are asked is the trial of a charismatic junior member of Parliament who has been accused of rape by a woman he was having an affair with. He is prosecuted by a woman. He is defended by a woman. The jury has more women than men on it and we, the readers, get to listen to the internal thinking of a number of these characters including his wife.
In a time of #MeToo and #Weinstein and endless accounts of women coming forward to report on sexual assault by old white privileged men, nothing has given me the sense of really understanding and printing what it is like to be a women confronted by a man who she may care about--or not--what goes on in her head and how little knowledge and power girls and women have been given to make good decisions around their bodies and sex. This book attempts to address all that. In my opinion, it does it quite well.
A limited series of the same name has been made by Netflix. It is fairly faithful to the book and also takes the viewer on a journey of asking 'when does No mean No?' "Should I just give in cuz I want the relationship or ... what do I do?' And, of course, the victim of rape, already humiliated must proved beyond a reasonable doubt by baring her soul in front of who knows how many people, exactly what happened. Both the book and the series say that men are to believed, why would they lie? and it is up to the victim to prove otherwise. The majority of women I know don't want to be raped a second time.
This is a brave book. Read it!
Absolutely horrible book. I would never recommend this book to others. The characters were horrible. The plot was shitty and what was described in the blurb was absolutely nothing like the actual book
Anatomy of a Scandal revolves around a trial. A politician has been accused of rape by a woman who works under him. To make things more blurry, they had previously had an affair, and he's married with children. The book is written from the points of view of the politician, his wife and the prosecuting attorney. As the story goes, you learn more about each of their backstories and how they are connected. It's mostly an internal storyline. There's not much action. Your inside their heads, especially the women. The deeper you get, the more you choose to judge or sympathize with the way they feel and act. I've seen this listed as a thriller and suspense, but I would categorize it more as drama.
This was a thrilling and immersive "whodunnit" mixed with the courtroom drama. There were a lot of intriguing twists and turns. I felt it's a timely read given the world's climate in regards to sexual misconduct allegations and scandals.
How can literally every single person in this book have some dark past secret?? Maybe I am just boring but I just don't have any deep dark secrets that I am afraid might be exposed. It sounds incredibly exhausting. This book was fine but not super memorable.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed seeing different characters' perspectives throughout the story; I think it added a lot of extra dimension. The characters are all three-dimensional and compelling, which helped make the book compulsively readable. I really could not put this down. I had to see how the mystery would unfold and, of course, learn the verdict in the trial.
This was a very situationally appropriate novel to read given the atmosphere the past few years surrounding sexual assault and believing survivors. I don't want to give away too much because the less you know about what will happen the better.
All in all, I recommend this book. The writing is great and the characters well fleshed out.
I was given an advanced copy from the publisher via Netgalley for an honest review.
This novel was pretty amazing! First, I love that this is told from different point of views AND sometimes at different times, most especially that it is not really told from the viewpoint of the main male character.
This novel follows a privileged and elite British parliamentary man, James, who is accused of something that his wife, Sophie, could never imagine him doing and is convinced that he is innocent as she is trying to protect her family. Kate is the prosecutor who is seeking the truth and trying to get justice, regardless of James' rank and privilege.
As the story moves forward in present time, we flash back to early college when Sophie and James had first met and their relationship unfolded as well as Sophie's tutorial partner Holly. Although, Holly abruptly left at the end of their freshmen year and Sophie never knew why and never cared to follow up...until now when she begins to wonder about what James was really like at university and if he told lies then, is he telling lies now?
An enthralling novel that I just could not stop after I started and it is impressive as the novel unfolds. Glorious writing and I love how the story is from the multiple point of views, this is absolutely one of my favorite way to read novels now!
I was really looking forward to reading this book and had heard so many wonderful things about it. Unfortunately it was almost a DNF for me, where I basically skip read the last third of the book. I prefer not to post my review to any social media sites.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria books for providing a digital copy in return for an honest, unbiased review.
This is my first book by Sarah Vaughan and I'm so glad I listened to my gut when I read this synopsis and requested this book. I'm a fan of thrillers and suspense driven books. This book is what I'd call a slow burning thriller. It's not got a lot of "action" per se but my mind was constantly moving with all the moving parts in this book.
What a timely book this is too. Dealing with something unfortunately so prevalent in our society today. I appreciated Sophie's dedication to her husband but wowza my heart truly hurt for her as the story moved along questioning everything she knew about her life.
Bring in Kate the woman in charge of finding out what exactly happened and we've got three POV's going on as we get each of their thoughts with each page I turned. Ms. Vaughan has written a book that kept me enthralled with the story and there were times I wanted to throw my kindle across the room too because, well, you'll need to read it to find out why.
If you're looking for a suspenseful read that will have you asking all sorts of questions until the last moment, then this is the book for you!
Great page-turner, focusing on James, a fictional government minister in the UK caught up in a scandal involving an affair and then an alleged rape, told mostly from the point of view of his wife Sophie and Kate, the lawyer prosecuting his case, intercut with flashbacks to more than 20 years before of a woman named Holly, whose connection to the other characters only becomes clear over time. This book is as much a character study as it is a courtroom drama or a slight psychological thriller, but it is incredibly suspenseful - there were times I found myself almost holding my breath as I read it.
The first time I’ve read Sarah Vaughan but it won’t be the last. Can’t wait to read everything else. Completely immersive writing, you feel like you’re in the book. Psychological thriller, secrets and lies, cover ups becoming exposed, twists.
Anatomy of a Scandal kept me on the edge of my seat and weaves a story that is mind-bendingly good and with a twist you won't see coming! Highly recommended!
While this book was okay, it left a lot to be desired. The premise was interesting, but somewhere in the execution, it just fell flat. I was expecting it to be spicier and emotional, but that is not what happened. It was just very blah. There was enough in the story to keep you reading, but not enough to say that you were hooked on the story.
This was a book I had looked forward to reading. Unfortunately, for me, it was a very slow read. I found my mind wandering to other places while reading. It just couldn't keep my attention.
