I'm always looking out for books to incorporate into my homeschool curriculum. Sometimes the same old gets boring day in and out. This was just the thing to spice it up and open new conversations. I love diving in to learning rabbit holes, and this book made the perfect doorway for that! Entertaining facts lead to discussions which lead to research.
On its own, this was also an entertaining read to flip through for an adult as well!
i know these illustrated facts are meant to be random, but a little context would go a long way in this comic collection.
it's a fun little book to flip through. i did learn some curious pieces of trivia, and i enjoyed lowery's choice of subjects. but so many of the "facts" are completely unspecific (i.e. "a man from x once did y"). i want details!! gimme the specifics!!
the knowledge lowery illustrates would feel much more substantial if each lil comic had a half-paragraph explanation below it. without context, all this information is pure fluff.
Thank you to NetGalley and Workman Publishing Company for providing me with a copy of this book in return for an honest (and belated) review.
This was the fun, interesting book I didn’t know I needed! Random Illustrated Facts is just what it says it is, a book with illustrations, and facts! All in all this isn’t a life hanging novel (nor is it trying to be), but Lowery does what he’s trying to achieve well. This would be a great book to have on your coffee table for when guests are over. So many facts that would be great conversation starters - plus the illustrations are interesting to look at. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed this book!
I love books like these. It's full of fun facts and is such a varied and wide assortment that it really helps you interested and intrigued, and you become that person at parties or work who just spouts random facts, like Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds. I don't mind that a bit.
I enjoyed the graphic novel a lot!
I would like to thank the publisher for giving me a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'm a random and weird facts, along with learning new and knowledgable facts. This book provides random facts in the most visually engaging and humorous way. Facts like folks in 1910 "buying anti-comet pills because they were afraid of being gassed by the tails of Hailey's comet," are quite surprising in some ways, and learning that "a sheep, a duck, and a rooster were the first passengers on a hot air balloon," are fascinating, and some are shocking, some sad, and some just flat-out hilarious. These illustrated facts are great insight into the human psyche over the years also.
This book is a fast read and enjoyable, especially if you're inspired to continued by reading with tons of visual illustrations. Learn something new or refresh your factual memories today!
What a fun book! I would definitely know some patrons that would be into this. I will know who to recommend this too.
'Random Illustrated Facts: A Collection of Curious, Weird, and Totally Not Boring Things to Know' by Mike Lowery is a 208 page book stuffed with facts.
In a brief forward, the author talks about creating a journal with illustrations of different facts. He talks about how his art improved over time. The book is divided into facts about history, animals, food, science, and everyday things. I learned about the patch of velcro inside an astronaut's helmet so they can scratch their nose. I learned that there is a museum in Osaka dedicated to ramen. There are lots of wacky facts in this collection.
The art is fun, and the facts are interesting. It's a pretty fast read, so it might be better as a gift book for a friend. As a kid, I loved reading Ripley's Believe It Or Not paperbacks, and this probably falls into the kind of thing I would have liked as a young reader curious about the world around me.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Workman Publishing Company and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
I think it’s safe to say that Mike Lowery had a blast researching and illustrating this book. Each and every illustration was cute and colorful. The facts were fun and many were really obscure. Broken down into several different sections, this book covers weird facts about history, animals, foods, laws, etc. It’s a fast read and great conversation starter.
Five stars!
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for giving me this review opportunity.
Nothing is more fun than random trivia and beautiful illustrations put together.
I was really drawn to this book and knew my family would be too because we love trivia and learning crazy facts. As we read the book, we enjoyed the random facts that were shared. Many of the facts are now added to our fun facts to know. It was really helpful that the book was set in different areas of interest. There are many favorites for everyone. Parental Caution: Personally we found some of the facts not kid-friendly.

This is an absolutely fun book with funny little doodles combined with out of this world facts. I enjoyed this a bite at a time though it would be easy to plow through it in a very short time if one wanted. I think a very wide range of people could love this book as much as I did. It’s a joy to look at and very entertaining too. I’m starting a list of gifts to give to people that you don’t know what to buy… and this is going on that list.
So many of the facts were so incredible that I wanted to fact check them. I didn’t check every one, but from what I did I didn’t find any that seemed incorrect. Consider this book if you need a little break in your reading. I certainly enjoyed it.
Random Illustrated Facts is a collection of random facts the author has collected throughout the years. Not only facts though- the author also illustrated it. It become kind of a routine for him to wake up and illustrate every morning. The facts are divided into 5 parts here: history, animal, food, science, and random daily things. The illustrations are definitely gorgeous and eye-catching; they are filled with cute images and bursting with colors. However, some of the facts are hard to read because the font is too “unique”. I also think it might be because I read it in e-book version, so physical copy might be better and more fun to flip through😊
This book is so much fun!
Brimming with interesting, unusual, funny, and captivating little facts this is a really great collection of all things intriguing. Lowery has a way with his humorous presentation, the way the facts are presented, the illustrations, the quirks. This book is all round enjoyable.
There were some facts that I wish may have been more explicit, further explained, or perhaps given a source. But this didn't take away from all the arbitrary facts I now know and can share with friends and family (to there amusement or annoyance I can not say).
And most importantly don't forget: there is a patch of velcro inside astronauts' helmets so they can scratch their noses.
Mike Lowery is one of my favorite artists on Instagram and a great illustrator who has worked on some really awesome kids’ books. When I heard he was coming out with a new book I was super stoked. After reading it, I can honestly say that Random Illustrated Facts is one of the funnest art books we’ve come across all year. It perfectly highlights Lowery’s unique brand of humor blended with outrageous facts and incredible doodles.
Random Illustrated Facts is such a fun book that it’s perfect for pretty much every reader. It covers such a wide variety of topics that anyone is sure to find at least one page of randomness that intrigues them. Once you get started with these short little whacky tidbits it’s hard to stop. Lowery offers up facts on any number of people, animals, history, and more.
Don’t care about Napoleon? Flip a few pages ahead and read some random facts about frogs! Or coffee! Or mushrooms! There’s even a page about a town in Honduras where it rains fish. You can discover any number of things from this book. Even if you were already aware of a particular outlandish fact you’ll enjoy seeing it supplemented with one of Lowery’s adorable little doodles.
Facts are presented on their own and together, sometimes with a single drawing and sometimes with numerous drawings. But in every case they stick to their own, single page. Lowery explains his methodology in a short but fun introduction that not only introduces readers to the book but to where he got the idea from in the first place. Having enjoyed his artwork for a while now without knowing much about it, it’s a cool little start to a book that’s really just about having fun.
If you’re looking for a Christmas gift for someone this holiday season, this is a really great choice. Random Illustrated Facts is the sort of ‘coffee table book’ you want to leave out for everyone to discover. Whether or not all the facts are actually true is something I cannot confirm. But I can confirm that they’re all fun to read through and anyone who picks up Mike Lowery’s Random Illustrated Facts is bound to have some fun with it!
You can check out more of Lowery’s work on Instagram. If you want a better idea of what the book is like, the image below comes straight from the book. Of course, you can just check out Random Illustrated Facts for yourself, too!

So saw this book and thought it looked interesting...I love trivia (my mind is full of trivial things) ...and it is..interesting ...many of the facts I already knew but the intro explaining how the author got started was cool and the drawings...while silly ...completely add to the fun...a quick read that I really enjoyed...would recommend it to those who like to know obscure facts and like to find out in a fun way...
I loved this! I tend to collect strange facts in my head and repeat them at weird times. I feel like this book really understood me. LOL I have purchased a copy of this for my son for his upcoming birthday (he is a fact lover too). Great fun read with excellent illustrations!
I really enjoyed this book! This is exactly the kind of book i would buy for myself. I loved how clear the layout was and how the information was presented. I would definitely pick up other works by the author especially if it was like this.
What a great, fun book. I really enjoy this type of book. It had so many different kinds of knowledge, all bundled into one book. You could read a little bit, then come back later for more, and not need to worry about what you already read. I learned a lot of little bits of knowledge and enjoyed it as I read it. Great read!
This book was a super quick & extremely entertaining read. I have always loved gaining knowledge about random things and I completely adored this book. It was divided into sections for facts about different topics and I thought I’d read it in parts but once I started reading, I went through it all in a couple hours. It had super engaging facts & very creative & cute hand-drawn illustrations that were super funny and will have you laughing!
This book would also make a perfect gift for young teens & any person who is absolutely impossible to buy for.
Definitely recommend this to everyone who loves learning about random, weird things.
