This time, it's not just Milo Weaver in the hot seat...

The third-in-series continues to bring the action, but it spreads the story around among the characters a bit more - which I enjoyed, although Milo remains (BY FAR) my favorite focal point. I wasn't sure if I was going to like the way it was organized, once I realized how it worked: basically you run through a stretch of time with a focus on one character's perspective and the things they knew. In the next section you shift focus to another character, with backtracking, time-overlap, and time moving forward. It was a novel way of filling in the gaps and a touch confusing at first but by the time I reached the final section I realized I really liked it because it made the revelations trickle in and the deceptions and secrets and lies and half-truths all the more compelling for their slow reveal...

The conspiracies, deception, and behind-the-scenes-battle-waging were even more intensely interwoven this time - which was no small feat, given the first two books. There were definitely things I didn't see coming, and the while the action may have been less intense, the emotional impact of the decisions being made by the major players certainly was not. This one ended a lot more abruptly than I normally like, and if it weren't for the fact that I know the next book is coming out in six months, I'd have been very irritated by the ending - particularly if I read this one when it was originally released in 2012. It stops, rather than ends, with a ton of things left unfinished as though they were interrupted, mid-sentence. It's an odd way to end the book and then wait 7 years to write the next installment...

Still, new readers like me don't have to wait that long, which is excellent news. This is a fantastic series - gritty and snarky and full of crosses, double-crosses, and triple-crosses. It reads like Cold War spy thrillers in the classic Nelson deMille vein - which is one of my highest compliments in espionage stories. I cannot WAIT for the fourth book to come out next spring!

I didn't like this book as much as the first two. It is very complicated and convoluted. It moves between many different perspectives of people so it is hard to follow what's happening and to who. I didn't like the ending as it was open-ended and didn't finish anything. #An American Spy #NetGalley

An American Spy is the third in the series by Steinhauer featuring super spy Milo Weaver. Thanks to St. Martin’s/Minotaur Press, I received a copy in exchange for my honest review. I’m truly unclear why I wanted to try this third one…I read the first two, and in my review for the second one, I said it “I just wanted it to be OVER. sort of like the movie “Raising Arizona”– couldn’t stand to stop without finding out what happened but god was I glad when it was over.”

So, here goes Milo again. The department of the CIA known as the Tourists (trained assassins) has been nearly completely obliterated, Milo has been shot in the gut, and although Milo wants to try to make a normal life post-spy biz, his former boss Alan Drummond takes over one of Milo’s former aliases, heads off for London, then disappears. So of course Milo has to go after him, and he is back in the spy biz once again. It’s sort of like Godfather Part 3: Michael Corleone says “just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” And, just like Godfather Part 3, this one was meh — it just didn’t do it for me. At all. Two stars. (I will likely read #4 of the Milo Weaver series, if there is one, just because Steinhauer is a good writer, but I won’t be super excited at the prospect)

This is the second book in this series. In this installment, it seems the whole world is out to get Milo. I’m glad I found this series of books because so far, I am really enjoying them. On to book 3 ...

This is the third book I have read with Milo Weaver as a central character. Milo is truly amazing in the spy world. He does find himself in the craziest schemes. I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next adventure with Milo.

Thanks to NET GALLEY I got this ARC

Xin Zhu, is the fat man of fear fro the Chinese and an intriguing character. However this is a MILO book and I read it for MILO; the flawed but favored MILO. I think he was maybe in a fourth of the book..

I have never read a book by Olen Steinhauer but this is a great spy thriller! So very fast moving and believable. There was never a dull moment with all the twists and turns in it. Thanks for the great read!

Another timely adventure by one of my favorite authors, Olen Steinhauer.
His latest, An American Spy, is right up there with other "just one more chapter" books.
This one is a rerelease. Just as good the second time around.

I was not able to get interested in this book, but I think that is primarily because I had not read the first two Milo Weaver books. I’m sure if I were more familiar with the series, I would’ve enjoyed this more. Thanks to Netgalley, Olen Steinhauer and Minotaur Books for providing me with an advance copy to review.

Very good series! I started the first book in the series, and finished all three books in one week. Characters are well developed, and the plot is action packed!

The author provides a strong foundation and plenty of detail to support the characters and the story line. The book moves at a good pace. I f you like this genre then you should like this book.

A pretty solid thriller. Not great, but not bad. It's a bit convoluted at times, and has the classic elements of a spy thriller. There are a lot of existing reviews, so check those out for more details.

I really appreciate the copy for review!!

Olen Steinhauer has taken a road less traveled, barely allowing his main character, the flawed, often depressed and disturbed spy/assassin, Milo Weaver, who risked everything for a master who didn’t care.

AN AMERICAN SPY is not a tingling spy thriller, it is an often convoluted tale with a varied cast that crosses continents, borders, agendas and really do not have that level of likeability or a cause that truly hit me as realistic or riveting.

Round and round we go, a murder here, a murder there, then we re-examine said murders, instead of moving on. Here’s hoping Milo recovers fully from his gut shot and perhaps he will play a bigger role in the series named for him.

I really, really wanted to like this one, I wanted to agree with others who say this is a great read, but, maybe Milo and I are never meant to besties.

I was invited to read and review the first three books in the Milo Weaver series by Minotaur Books! This is my honest and voluntary review.

This was an enjoyable read,it still had a great plot and the characters I've come to know in the previous two. I thought it was a good read.

An American Spy is the third novel in the Milo Weaver espionage series. Milo thinks he's out of the spy business, but you're never really out. There's always someone or something dragging you back in. And, Milo learns the hard way about balancing work with family life. There are a lot of moving parts to this one and it's not quite as successful as the first two books, often leaving the reader with the sense that things are just spiraling out of control without the ethical quandaries that gave weight to the first two books. Still, however, looking forward to book four, which is coming out soon.

Another great continuation in the series by Steinhauer. As engaging as The Tourist and the other entries in the series!

3 1\2 stars
This is the first in this series I have read and I wish I had read the first two books to get a better understand on the characters and the direction the author was or is trying to take them. Many times readers will feel lost and wonder what the connections the characters have to each other. The first half of the book is about Xin Zhu and his world. While the author is able to create a interesting world at times things felt slow and in need of better pacing.
The author has too many characters to keep up with. The many many different points of view can work but not in this story.

As a Reader I wish I had read the first 2 books to better understand the Milo and the different characters.
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of Olen Steinhauer An American Spy
