I wasn't planning on giving feedback on this because it's just a sample and I wanted to read the whole book. But now that I've read it I will! I really liked this one a lot, the setting and premise were really interesting. The desert aspect was so cool because I just don't read about that type of environment a lot. Plus, I really enjoyed the dystopian magical element. Honestly, I wasn't too invested in the main characters, but I stuck around for the great writing and wonderful world and didn't regret it!
Sarah Jac Crow and James Holt have fallen in love working in the endless fields that span a bone-dry Southwest in the near future—a land that’s a little bit magical, deeply dangerous, and bursting with secrets. To protect themselves, they’ve learned to work hard and, above all, keep their love hidden from the people who might use it against them. Then, just when Sarah Jac and James have settled in and begun saving money for the home they dream of near the coast, a horrible accident sends them on the run. With no choice but to start over on a new, possibly cursed ranch, the delicate balance of their lives begins to give way—and they may have to pay a frighteningly high price for their love.
The book was decent. The plot was not bad. I liked both main characters.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
The writing for All the Wind in the World was beautiful, intense, and compelling. Unfortunately, its just no the type of story that I fall in love with.
BUT for those of you who love, mystery, thrillers, and darker themes, I think they would love it. It was able to hook the reader early on, and the intensity of the romance was great.
Thanks!
Loved this one. But my copy cut off way too soon! I need the rest of it!

Title: All the Wind in the World
Author: Samantha Mabry
Genre: YA/Fantasy/Romance
Rating: ****
Review: In the opening part of all the wind of the world we meet Sarah and James as they work during the maguey harvest. Both James and Sarah are orphans travelling from ranch to ranch, working to earn their keep but there seems to be more to their relationships that just being cousins. After an innocent accident in one of the field during a dust storm that leaves a foreman seriously injured or dead, Sarah and James must flee to somewhere new although they must leave everything behind other than what they have on them.
As the hop aboard a train heading the Real Marvellous ranch in Texas, Sarah is scared as another worker told her the fields were cursed and the owner hexes his worker if they do not meet his expectations. It turns out that there is more to their relationship as they are lovers as well as cousins and they are happy to head to their new location with their lives and each other.
As the start at the new ranch and start all over again, we learn that the pair’s relationship isn’t accepted, and they are constantly having to hide behind and sacrifice others to maintain their secrecy. For the opening few chapters of a novel it is quite depressing, but I have to admit I am very intrigued by what is going on and I will definitely be picking up the full novel as soon as I can.
All the Wind in the World by Samantha Mabry
I was sucked in from the first page, immediately felt myself perk up from my long book slump. On a recent podcast I heard someone say that they want to read the first chapter before bed and ended up staying up the whole night finishing the whole book in one sitting. That's what I'm sure that I would end up doing, if I had a full arc and not just a sampler. Will picking this up as soon as I can, because I’m still thinking about how intriguing it was. Which is honestly the highest praise I can give!
**Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing with a sampler in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own**
I got to read the sneak peak of All the Wind in the World by Samantha Mabry, and might I say, I'm hooked! The story was well written and had me pulled in from the very first page. I really like the main characters Sarah Jac & James so far, the story is told through Sarah's point of view. From what I"ve read, I was hoping for more information on the world building and how the earth became desert like and dry.
All in all, I found the story line quite interesting, thoroughly enjoyed how it kept me continuously turning the page to see what happened next, would definitely recommend others to check it out!
The sneak peek is a page-turner, narrated in the first person by teenaged Sarah, who is vagabonding the migrant workers' trail with her friend James. They are maguey cutters in a post-apocalyptic world somewhere in America's southwest, where water sometimes holds more value than gold. When they find themselves hired at The Real Marvelous ranch, readers will likely realize that not all is Marvelous, but that Sarah and James probably have the grit and gumption necessary to survive whatever challenges they face. It would be interesting to assign this along with GRAPES OF WRATH. Has been nominated for a 2017 National Book Award.
This is an excerpt of the novel "All the Wind in the World" by Samantha Mabry.
It only includes three chapters but it will give you a feel of the story and the author's style. The main characters are Jacqueline and James, they work in the fields and have fallen in love but must keep it secret. They are both brave and dream of a better future. However, until then, they must hide their feelings for each other. The plot seems very promising.
Thanks to the publisher for this sampler, I cannot wait to get a hold of the entire book.
The book is off to an excellent start and since I read the sneak peek, I have been raving to all my friends about it.
So far, I'm not sure, if the setting is a dystopian landscape or simply a very hot and dry area somewhere in the southwest of the USA.
Our two main characters work as farm laborers/harvesters and the two seem to have a romance going between them, but keep it a secret because they are cousins and it's frowned upon between workers anyway.
An incident right at the start, (the girl tries to help one of their fellow workers with dire consequences) has them on the run and on the train they meet this intriguing guy (tall, dark, handsome?), who could very well cause some trouble for their relationship/friendship.
All three are heading for this mysterious farm, where they hope to find work and the sample ends once they have arrived there and are seperated into different camps, with the idea to start work the next day.
All the Wind in the World has the potential to take the bookshelves in a strom.
I really can't wait to read the rest of the book. It's just my type of book and it's on all my wishlists now.
I read the first three chapters and I can't wait to finish this book as soon as it comes out. It's kind of a dystopian world with romance and many, many secrets! I am curious about the world the author created and to know what will happen with the characters.
The maguey harvest. Sarah and her lover James and responsible for part of the labor only telling time by the sounds of train whistles throughout the day. Moving down endless rows of agave plants harvesting the hearts for things like tequila. James and Sarah must keep their relationship a secret, frequently calling each other cousins but why? They travel from plantation to plantation harvesting in the grueling desert conditions of a futuristic United States. The lies they keep only intensify their already stressful situation building mystery and intrigue. They escape a blightful situation on a train to Texas for survival to a place that is supposedly cursed hoping for a new start.
I'm looking forward to further character and story development and learning more about this futuristic era of mysticism in the full-length novel.
ARC of the first couple chapters.
After reading a sneak peek of All the Wind in the World I cannot wait to read the rest of the story.
Sarah Jac and James are field workers in a future were water is scarce and the planet turning into a desert. To make their dreams come true they work on a maguey field to gain money but an incident soon makes them flee. The train they catch leads them to another camp. Rumor has it that the camp is cursed but Sarah Jac und James start to work there. The couple does not reveal their relationship to anyone and pretends to be cousins. The only information on why they act this way is that love is considered a weakness since people would do anything for their loved ones.
The writing style is utterly captivating. I did not look once how many pages where left. They just flew buy and I was kind of sad that it ended so soon. I definetly want to continue the story.
So I was lucky to receive the first three chapters of this book! I have to honestly say I think I'll need the whole book to give a full honest reviews. The first three chapters are very descriptive and beautiful. They paint a picture perfectly and I am getting to know the characters, however it is leaving me with questions. So we shall see once I read the whole book!!
This review is of a few, sneak peek sample chapters.
All The Wind In The World promises to be an evocative and powerful novel. After reading just a few chapters I want to know more about the characters and their colourful, detailed world. Why do the characters hide their romance, why is their world so dangerous, what made them leave Chicago to work in the dusty fields of the south? The mix of superstitions and magical realism contrast with the harsh and dusty landscape. There is so much more to learn about their story and I look forward to reading the full book.
The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
I received a copy of this sneak peek from Algonquin Young Readers through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
I hate that all I had for this was a sneak peek! I still have so many questions about what the heck is even going on in the world portrayed in this story. To me, it seems to be a near-future dystopian (basically everything west of the Mississippi is desert apparently), but the feel of society is a bit like during the Great Depression as portrayed in East of Eden by John Steinbeck. So maybe it's not a dystopian at all and is actually set in the not so distant past. I'm just not sure and haven't seen enough of the story to make a final conclusion.
Then there is the relationship between Sarah and James. I would apparently have understood it better had I read the blurb before starting the sneak peek (one of these days I'll learn my lesson, I really will). It seemed like they were a couple, but they kept telling us that they're cousins, so that confused me. Based on the blurb, they clearly really are a couple and for some reason it's important for everyone else to think that they're cousins, which makes no sense to me at this point in the story (and is one of the biggest reasons why I wish I had the whole thing).
In the sneak peek they had just gotten to the Real Marvelous ranch and because I have a decent understanding of foreshadowing and what it typically means for the future of a story, I know that stuff is going to get bad for them at Real Marvelous, like really bad, and probably really strange and almost unexplainable. And all of that worries me because these are kids and I don't want bad things to happen to them, and I need to know that they are okay.
So, I'm going to have to buy this book at some point to make sure that Sarah and James ultimately survive and find their happy for now at the very least, because that is what I hope for them.
I really enjoyed Mabry's first book, so I was excited to read the sneak peek of All the Wind in the World. I was immediately intrigued by the premise, and being from Texas, I love that I've discovered an author from Texas who writes in the genre I most enjoy. Mabry has a lyrical way of weaving a story that is refreshing and satisfying. I will definitely pick this one up to read!
This is certainly interesting. The comparisons to Wink Poppy Midnight intrigued me. What an intriguing start!
Really sad this was just a sneak peak! Great start to a masterpiece on paper!
