Annabelle is a spinster, oh you know she is already 25! Ready for the grave really. Her reputation is also on ruins after a little kiss in the gardens at 18. But who needs men! She is busy taking care of the estate she will inherit, reading her books and taking care of the people living there. A good honest woman. But there are always buts, if she does not marry before 25 she will loose the estate. Well that sucks. Better find a husband, but who wants a hubbie who can bully, take over her estate, even sell it. She would still loose everything.
Then we have Quinn, sent after by his aunt to help weed out the rotten suitors. He is a scoundrel, I mean the series title says it all, oh and the title of this one. He was also the one who ruined her at 18. Why the family never set it right I do not know, maybe they thought they would resent each other. But he is a good guy, just a scoundrel set for America.
Oh and they fancy each other pants off (since she wear pants in the fields). But the road there is long. He wants to start a new life on his terms in America. She needs to stay here and save Glenarvon. So in the beginning of the book I want to hit him over the head, and then at the end of the book I really truly want to hit her over the head with a book. Stupid girl!
Conclusion:
But it was a fun romance, and there is a baddie too. Let's just hit him over the head too, nah, we can hit him somewhere lower.
I really enjoyed the first book in the Capturing the Carlisles series, and I was pretty excited to pick up the second, Anna Harrington’s When the Scoundrel Sins. There were some shocks, some swoon, and more than enough sexy.
Annabelle Green’s reputation takes a hit when she’s caught in a compromising position with her friend and childhood rival, Quinton Carlisle. Six years later, Belle is in a pickle. To keep her childhood home, she needs to marry before her birthday. The problem? There’s no suitor in sight and her aunt has one too many plots up her sleeve.
I adore friends-to-lovers, and Belle and Quinn have a bit of bad blood that amps the tension. The chemistry took a bit to build for me, but when it did? I was pleasantly surprised by the heat level! Annabelle is super sweet, but she also won’t settle for less. She may be the innocent miss, but she’s no simpering wallflower.
Me and Quinn had a bit of a tiff going on. He just doesn’t get it for a bit too long, and it got a tad frustrating for me. I mean, Good God, Man! But I really liked the charming rogue side of him and the protective, possessive side, and the vulnerable side.
A good mix!
Add in a few twists, some hidden demons, and I had time for tears and plenty of laughter. The side characters are fabulous, and I’m really excited for Robert’s story.
If you’re looking for a solid historical with plenty of romance I’d highly recommend this series!
4 stars!
Ms. Harrington has mastered the art of seduction. She tempts by revealing the story in phases. A little back history here, a bit of romance there and a whole lot of heat is on the way. When the Scoundrel Sins is the latest of her flirty, feel good Carlisle series. A scandal has ruined any chances of Annabelle finding a match. Can a marriage of convenience give her the happily ever after she secretly craves? He means to run, she aims to give chase. What starts as a convenient arrangement becomes the stuff of fairy tales. By stories end a good time is had by all.
This is a captivating and engrossing story that is full of drama, secrets and very stubborn people. Quinton is charming, but oblivious and cold. Belle is a little vulnerable yet determined. She's smart, tough and responsible. He ruined her 6 years before, but she loves the life she has been living. And she needs him to keep that life, only he is too much of a gentleman to agree to her terms, but not so much that he doesn't want her in his bed. Temporarily. They go back and forth proposing and refusing while he tries to find any other way. He comes across as really unfeeling and selfish, like nothing in the past was his fault. He's hard to like and sympathize with, but he's not a bad person, just oblivious. Poor Belle is irresistibly drawn to him, yet doesn't want to have much to do with him. It's a brilliant story and I couldn't put it down.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. This is my voluntary and honest opinion of it.
When the Scoundrel Sins by Anna Harrington
Capturing the Carlisles #2
Annabelle Green, Ladies companion, has a scandalous situation occur during her debut year in society. Lord and Lady Ainsley were hoping for the best for Belle but it was not to be. Six years later she is in need of a husband or she will lose the property bequeathed to her by Lord Ainsley BUT only if she marries by her 25th birthday. Her dream is to own and run the estate without the encumbrance of a husband but that is not in the cards. Into this situation steps Quinton Carlisle – the person she was caught with at the ball six years before. He arrives at Lady Ainsley’s request and is asked by her to help vet men wanting to marry Belle. His plans to go to America are put on hold until the best possible future for Belle is determined. This is a fun story with an eventual HEA. I found Belle and Quinn were well suited for one another but at times wanted to tell them to do or say something that didn’t seem to come to mind on their parts. I have not read the first book in this series but as this is a standalone story had no trouble reading and enjoying it. I am interested in reading Robert’s story next and if I find Sebastian’s, book one, will read it, too.
Thank you to the author, NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but nothing about it really stuck with me after the fact. Annabelle and Quinton had a lot of the love/hate dynamic for a good portion of the story, and occasionally I just wanted to shake them both and say "you love each other!" but that would have made for a much shorter story...
Anna Harrington gives us another delightful romance in her Capturing The Carlisles series. Quinn caused Annabelle to be ruined some years prior and she has not forgiven or forgotten. Now she must find a husband so that she can claim her inheritance. Her Foster mother sends for Quinn, her nephew, to help in finding that husband. The local neighbor thinks he should be the bridegroom since her land would benefit his coffers and he seems to be a dastardly villain capable of all kinds of evils. Quinn realizes that if he is to help Annabelle he must find a way to circumvent his Uncle’s will.
Yes, there is romance. Two people so intent on not believing their true feelings for each other and sexual tension that just seems to grow more lusty. Well written with characters
Annabelle Green was taken in by the Ainsley’s as a young girl. She’s spent her entire life since at Castle Glenarvon. If she marries by her twenty-fifth birthday, she will inherit her home and run it in the way she has for years. The problem is her reputation is less than pristine and she has little time to find a suitable groom.
This is where Lady Ainsley’s nephews, Robert and Quinn Carlisle, come in to help in the search. Lady Ainsley has called upon her dear nephews before Quinn sets sail for a new life with land waiting for him in America. Quinn’s future is set in stone, yet he can’t help the feelings of lusty desire for the lovely Miss Green whom he’d stole a kiss from so many years ago. Transformed into a great beauty, Quinn is pulled into Belle’s web, but fights tooth and nail to be freed so he can meet his destiny in America.
After the first novel in the series, If the Duke Demands, I fully expected to read Robert’s story next. Harrington surprised and delighted me with turning to Quinn for the next chapter in the Carlisle saga. Although Quinn might’ve been deemed as an unrepentant rake in the first novel, Harrington brings out his true love for his family and the responsibilities he believes he is ready to undertake. Of course, Belle throws a wrench in all of his plans. Deemed close enough relatives, Lady Ainsley has Quinn and Robert step in to help find a suitable groom before it is too late. The owner of the neighboring estate, Sir Harold Bletchley, seems to be the front runner, but Belle is adamant against the match and Quinn quickly finds out Bletchley’s ulterior motives. Jealousy runs rampant over Quinn’s soul as each suitor is crossed off the list. If only he could figure out a way to become Belle’s groom, life would be simpler.
Harrington once again throws us into a whirlwind adventure of the heart as Quinn and Belle struggle with their feelings and their obligations. Another five star read for the Carlisles!
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Book two in the Capturing the Carlisles series. This book was just as good as the first one only this time we get to follow the youngest brother instead of the oldest. Annabelle was ruined in society about six years before by Quinn when a situation went wonky making things happen that was never intended. Now Annabelle has to be married by her 25th birthday or lose her inheritance. This prompts her family to invite Quinn to visit with the excuse that a male chaperone is needed as she searching for a husband amongst the treasure hunters. What neither of them know is that they were thrown together on purpose in an effort for them to realize that they really love each other before her birthday and he thinks he is moving to America. Harrington has done it again with this excellent romance novel. I found myself hooked from the first page and unable to truly stop until I was done. The details are accurate, the conversation is witty, the romance has enough ups and downs to keep me hooked, and it was impossible to not fall in love with all of the characters. The more books of hers I read the more I love her so I highly recommend this book to fans of historical romance. I really enjoyed so it gets 4/5 stars.
Ever read a book where you would just like to reach in and shake the hero for not recognizing that he is in love with the heroine? When the Scoundrel Sins is such a book. Quinn has been the bane of Annabell's existence ever since his aunt and uncle took her in as a small child. He has unmercifully teased since they were children. Unfortunately, as adults when he recognises her as a beauty, they are caught by some unscrupulous "friends" ruining her reputation and her come out season. Six years later Quinn is called to Castle Glenarvon, where Belle has taken refuse, away from the ton. His aunt has requested he help weed out fortune hunters when it is announced that she will inherit Castle Glenarvon if she marries by her twenty fifth birthday, just a few weeks away. The dowager viscountess feels he owes Belle for ruining her chances at marriage so many years ago. Or does she have an other motive? Quinn has his life planned out to make something of himself, by buying land in America where he will be more than a Duke's third son. Marriage is not in the plan. As Quinn and Belle are thrown together, will they recognize their mutual affection or will it be too late for Belle to inherit? How they solve the issue makes the story worth reading. This is the second book in the Carlisle brothers series. I am looking forward to reading Robert's story.
4.25 stars
Six years ago Annabelle Greene’s reputation was ruined now she was needs a husband-and quickly because in order to inherit the only home she's ever known Glenarvon, she must be married by her twenty-fifth birthday & that’s only a month away. Finding a suitor has been next to impossible after a reckless rogue named Quinton Carlisle seduced her into a scandalous midnight tryst all those years ago. Quinn can hardly believe that the shy bookish girl he teased as a child has grown into such a brazen beauty. The very idea of marrying Belle or his Bluebell to right the wrongs of his past is downright shocking and at the same time deliciously tempting. Too bad marriage, convenient or otherwise, is the last thing Quinn wants he’s going to America to buy a piece of land there & start a new life. Quinn & his brother Robert will help their great aunt & vet the suitors that now flock to court Belle knowing she will inherit the estate.
This was such a fun read, Belle is delightful definitely no shrinking debutante, Quinn is of course gorgeous & afraid to love as terrified of losing the one he loves, he’s seen his mother almost die from grieving. The verbal spats between the pair are so very entertaining & it’s obvious to everyone how much they care for each other just Quinn who’s blinkered. There were times when I wanted to shake Quinn, I particularly enjoyed his conversation with Robert at the ball. The pace of the story is good, no great mysteries just a straight forward case of you don’t know what you’ve got until you almost lose it. I look forward to reading Robert’s story
What’s it About? Years ago Quinton Carlisle inadvertently ruined Annabelle Greene’s reputation and she left London. Now she’s grown up and desperately needs a husband so that she can keep the only home she’s ever known. She only has weeks to find a husband and she’s desperate so she turns to Quinn and proposes a marriage of convenience. Only Quinn has his own plans and they don’t include marrying anyone, especially someone like Annabelle. But Annabelle’s guardian has roped him into helping Annabelle finding a suitable husband. All that time together has Quinn reconsidering Annabelle’s very tempting proposal.
Overall reaction to the story? I didn’t know what to expect out of Annabelle and Quinton to be honest, they had a history together that wasn’t all that pleasant (Though Quinn remembers the incident differently than Annabelle.) but the initial attraction was still there. Anna Harrington took two conflicted people with different goals, threw in an inheritance situation and created a lovely romance with a dash of teasing that made me smile throughout the whole story.
Describe the hero in five words: Playful. Stubborn. Smart. Charming. Loyal.
Did you like him? Not at first but he grew on me.
Why? At first Quinn came off as someone who didn’t take anything seriously except for the fun things in life. All he did was tease Annabelle ruthlessly and that didn’t leave any room for some serious relationship or character development. However, Annabelle’s situation sobered Quinn up enough for him to show his true colors but not too much to where he didn’t still get on Annabelle’s nerves now and again. I liked that he could be a bit of child with her but at the same time he was also kind, and a good listener. Quinn was also determined to help Annabelle find a way to keep her home without being forced to marry, something that he didn’t have to do since it didn’t affect him at all, to me that told me all I needed to know about him. He was a good guy even though he liked to make Annabelle mad.
Describe the heroine in five words: Determined. Kind. Intelligent. Loyal. Strong.
Did you like her? Yes.
Why? Annabelle’s situation would make anyone cry but not her. She was willing to tackle the situation head on instead of letting everyone around her try and solve her problems. Not that she didn’t know she needed help but for the most part, she was well informed about her situation and had several ideas going. I loved that she always tried to stay two steps ahead on the problems in her life, and never stood there like a wilting flower waiting to be saved. I liked that Quinn’s teasing didn’t send her into a swoon; she stood there and dished it out the best she could. I do love a heroine who stands her ground.
Let’s talk about the romance: Quinn and Annabelle’s romance started a few years before the present timeline in the book. He was young, stupid, and flexing his seduction skills and she was the unfortunate victim of bad timing, flimsy dress material, and gossip. The little bit of attraction between them at that point took a backseat to animosity on Annabelle’s part. Still, the attraction was still there a few years later when they meet up again it’s just that this time with Annabelle’s inheritance situation these two couldn’t get away from each other. I liked the whole I-Hate-You-But-I-Still-Think-You’re-Hot vibe that these two had going though I don’t think Quinn every hated Annabelle, he was just fascinated and frustrated by her. The romance was built on these sometimes humorous interactions but also on Quinn really seeing Annabelle as more than just a pretty face that he liked to torment. He grew to admire her and that lead to love. I liked that there was more to these two than just a physical attraction.
Click It or Skip It? Click It. Anna Harrington’s second book in the Carlisle series has more humor in it with Quinn and Annabelle’s bickering but it’s still a steamy romance with plenty to offer.

A MOST INDECENT PROPOSAL
Annabelle Green needs a husband-and quickly. To inherit the only home she's ever known, she must be married by her twenty-fifth birthday. But finding a suitor has been next to impossible after a reckless rogue named Quinton Carlisle seduced her into a scandalous midnight tryst. Her reputation in ruins, Belle now needs a rather large favor. And she knows just who to turn to . . .
Quinn can hardly believe that the shy bookish girl he teased as a child has grown into such a brazen beauty. The very idea of marrying Belle to right the wrongs of his past is downright shocking . . . and deliciously tempting. Too bad marriage, convenient or otherwise, is the last thing Quinn wants. He'll help Belle find a husband and be on his way. But if he can't control his attraction to the bride-to-be, this marriage could go up in flames-of wicked desire.
My Thoughts:
This book is an interesting twist on the friends to lovers concept.
Annabelle must marry by her 25th birthday which is not long in coming.
Quinn is set on not marrying anyone but is drawn to the beautiful young woman he remembers as a bookish girl. Another solution, he offers to help her find a husband, but finds himself jealous of any man that lays a hand on her.
Will these two who are clearly meant for each other put aside any differences and make a lasting match?
I like friends to lovers stories and found this convoluted tale well written. I gave it 4.0 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and gave it a sensual rating of 3.25 of 5.0 flames.
Most often the scenes were just heated kissing or petting but they were hot none the less.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book via NetGalley from the publisher to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Six years ago Annabelle Green and Quinn Carlisle were caught in the garden at a party. The people who had been making fun of Annabelle because she wasn’t of the peerage had even more reason to mock her. She refused to let her childhood friend, Quinn, marry her and retreated to the country.
Now she’s almost 25 years old and the inheritance that her guardian left her is about to fall through her fingertips. There is a stipulation that she much be married in order to inherit. Annabelle’s had an offer from the neighbor but he’s older than her and despite that not anyone she’d want to marry. Her guardian’s wife tries to help her by asking Quinn and his brother to come vet suitor’s as they plan to let the information out about Annabelle’s dowry.
Quinn is shocked at how womanly Annabelle is now. She’s changed considerably and he can’t stop himself from wanting her. He is leaving for America to buy land there because he knows that as a third son his actions will always fall under her Duke brother. He doesn’t want people to think he got anything without hard work. He does end up offering from Annabelle but she refuses as she knows that’s not what he wants. Falling in love with each other isn’t in the plans but it happens – too bad Quinn’s leaving will make them both miserable.
This was a cute story. It was different as the woman has to marry in order to inherit but she’s the one who wants to work the land. Yes, technically the property will be her husbands but truly it would be hers to run and finding a husband to agree to that is damned near impossible. I loved that she wouldn’t settle for just anyone and tried to find a way out of the will’s stipulations.
Quinn was a decent person for the most part. It annoyed me that he wouldn’t take responsibility for what had happened in the garden six years earlier. It was just as much his fault as Annabelle’s and he should have insisted that they marry. Instead he’d been cutting a swathe through London’s woman. Yuck. I think he had a good heart in there but it took us too many pages to find it. Annabelle was stubborn as all get out and frankly annoyed me at times. I wasn’t pleased with all of her actions and got frustrated with her a time or two, I must admit.
Overall a cute book but one I found frustrating at times. Unfortunately I didn’t like it as well as book one in the series.

I am giving a fair and honest review for this ARC. Anna Harrington writes consistently enjoyable books. She has a style of telling a tale that just keeps you into the place and time. I do wish that she were not quite so accurate about how men think. LOL
I didn't read the first book in the series, but it didn't dampen my enjoyment for this book. I loved Annabelle and Quinton--both of them stubborn, sassy and tantalizingly attracted to each other. Belle Green hasn't seen Quinton Carlisle in 6 years, not since the night he ruined her. She has retreated to the borderlands with Lady Ainsley and devotes herself to managing the estate of the late Lord Ainsley. If she wants to keep the estate, she'll have to marry and in a hurry before her 25th birthday. When Quentin shows up to help her search for a husband, the sparks fly between them.
I really enjoyed the witty banter between these two although Quinn is a bit of a cad for not acknowledging his part in her ruin all those years ago. I did figure out the villain in the story early on, but there is a great twist that I didn't see coming. Ms. Harrington writes well and her descriptions of the surrounding countryside brought the scene to life. As with most romance novels, the hero is slow to realize what he really wants. Fans of Regency romance who would like to see the story leave the stuffy ballrooms will definitely enjoy this one.
This novel is a solid follow up to If the Duke Demands. Fans of the Capturing the Carlisles series will be happy to see Quinton and Robert Carlisle return in this novel, but it is not necessary to read the first book in the series to enjoy this one. After an engaging and entertaining prologue, the novel's start was a bit slow for me. But once I got further into the book, the tension increased my interest and the novel picked up speed and finished with a surprising and exciting ending. The injustice of Annabelle's situation and Quinton's lack of acknowledgment of his part in creating the issue makes it difficult for the reader to find any reason to like Quinton, but Annabelle is a winning soul. The witty dialogue and clean writing style make this novel a joy to read.
Love…who knows when and where it will strike. Quinton is the happy-go-lucky brother from the first book but little did we know that he has an aversion to love. Not love itself, but what it does to the people you care about. His hurt really translates well in the story. He cannot give love but love will not let go of him. Annabelle tries too hard to get what she wants. She is full of kind of hare-brained ideas and does not really think things through. I kind of like that about her. Go after what you want with everything you have. But she never settles for less than love. Great characters and another fantastic story from Ms. Harrington.
Wow! This sums it all in Anna Harrington's "When the Soundrel Sins ".
This is my favorite quote " you need to be needed, Quinton..." this from his brother Robert Carlisle. Quinn has this very strong attraction to Annabelle since they were children, not as friends really but like some irritating pests towards each other.
Fast forward. Annabelle needs a husband to protect her claim to Castle Glenarvon.
Quinn is the best answer. I shall say no more but this lovely story unfolds to some exciting events and discovery of love for each other. The prose and style of Anna Harrington is a joy to read and keeps you reading. And puts you back in that time.
I received an advance reader copy from the author at no cost; my review is entirely my own views. Thanks, Anna !
I was SO EXCITED to pick this novel up that I put it to the top of my TBR pile despite the mountain of other books--and I was not disappointed.
These two had fantastic chemistry right from the start. So it was hard to watch them keep their distance when you know that they would be PERFECT together. But then again, that's the fun of this book! I had a blast watching them spare back and forth, fighting their budding feelings and denying the obvious. I love sexual tension and Harrington succeeds once again with these two.
The one disappointing aspect for me was that the plot wasn't what I wanted it to be. I found it took a back seat to the the romance (which isn't a bad thing) but it did make the wrapping up seem a little rushed just because you did forget about it a bit. I also found it to be terribly predictable which was disappointing. I suppose that aspect wasn't as engaging as I wanted it to be.
But I thoroughly enjoyed this one and had a very, very hard time putting it down. Another solid installment!
