When the Scoundrel Sins is the second book in Anna Harrington’s Capturing the Carlisles series of Regency-era historical romances. I was very excited about the opportunity to read this book because I enjoyed reading the first book in the series.
Six years ago, Quinn and Annabelle were discovered in a semi-compromising position. This incident proved to be her social ruination, but she has occupied herself over the subsequent years by working hard to improve the estate that she lives on. If she marries before her 25th birthday, then the estate will be hers outright- not her husband’s.
Quinn and his brother Robert are summoned to the estate to help oversee the process of finding a suitor for Annabelle. Quinn realizes that Annabelle is just as beautiful as she was the last time he kissed her, and that this is going to be a much more difficult project than he anticipated.
There’s no denying that the chemistry between Quinn and Annabelle is real, but he can’t marry her because he is supposed to leave to start a new life in America. It’s very important for Quinn to carve his own path in life and achieve things based on his own merits and not because he is the younger son of a duke.
I appreciate angsty books, but at times, there was too much angst over issues that could easily be easily solved. Quinn doesn’t want to see Annabelle marry the highly unsuitable man from the neighboring estate, but he declines her proposal several times. And despite the fact that he refuses to marry her, he does not have any problem sharing intimate moments with her. And, for that matter, it’s highly irritating that Quinn is the one who placed Annabelle in this position in the first place, rather than stepping up and marrying her all those years ago.
I would recommend When the Scoundrel Sins. Annabelle and Quinn have great chemistry, and it’s fascinating to watch them work through their issues together. She is willing to do whatever it takes to keep her beloved estate, even if it means marrying an incompatible man. Her priority has always been the estate, despite a strong attraction to Quinn. I will conclude with this thought: the level of angst was so well done that I began to doubt whether Quinn and Annabelle would get their happily ever after at the end. I am already looking forward to the next book in this series!
Sadly I was not as impressed with this novel as I have been with others by Anna Harrington. It started off very strong, but I kept getting irritated by the end.
A lot of the novel seemed to be piecemealed together instead of being consistent throughout. I think it may be because a lot of things were happening at once and it just did not come together easily. For example, while Bletchley was present in much of the novel he seemed a bit superfluous to the story. Additionally, the ending irked me. It was wrapped up very abruptly.
Aside from those issues, I did like the story enough, also it helps that it has some very well described intimate scenes.

However, he has spent his life, teasing, laughing, and calling Annabelle, Bluestocking! Is this man, who practically ruined her six years before, her last hope? He doesn't believe in love, and he is leaving for America two weeks before her birthday! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, Anna Harrington, is becoming one of my favorite Authors! I highly recommend! The most engaging story that has me not wanting go put it down. I love the heroine who does anything to save the rake. Anna's best book yet and can't wait to read the next book.
Annabelle "Belle" Green has to marry to inherit the only true home she has ever known, Glennarvon, or she will lose it forever. She has one suitor she isn't the least bit interested in so when Quintion Carlisle comes back into her life, Belle sets her sights on him. After all, it wasn't that long ago that Quinton caused a certain scandal that led to her losing almost all marriage prospects forever. He most definitely owes her!
Quinn is at a loss when he arrives at his aunt's home and is told the news about Belle's impending marriage. He is not the least bit interested in marrying, but he cannot stand the idea of Belle marrying another. Quinn must stick to his guns and help Belle or his dreams of having his own place in America will never come to fruition. But what if he could have his own place right here in his homelands... could he be just as content?! After all, Belle would be there at his side.
I have hit a gold mine in author Anna Harrington's CAPTURING THE CARLISLES series. Each book in the series so far is unique in it's own way and I have enjoyed them immensely. Honestly, I cannot say whether book one, IF THE DUKE DEMANDS, or book two, WHEN THE SCOUNDREL SINS, is my favorite. Historical romance readers... CAPTURING THE CARLISLES is a must read series! I am impatiently awaiting the next installment!
This was quite a disappointing read, all the more so because I had so enjoyed If the Duke Demands , Book 1 in the series. I kept on wanting to stop reading, probably starting around 40% or 50% in (maybe even earlier?), but I trudged through because I got it as an ARC and hate reviewing books that I don't finish. There are good aspects, but the bad ones overshadowed them severely. Writing is good, chemistry is sizzling, there are some funny scenes.
But Quinn and Annabelle drove me bonkers!!! Ugh, I could not take them, and the more they talked and breathed and existed, the more annoyed I became. I couldn't wait for it to be over, because I didn't care about them, and when you don't care about the hero and heroine of the romance you're reading, what's the point, really?
— Quinn is immature, refusing to take responsibility for the fact that his actions ruined Annabelle and not even showing any remorse or awareness about it until the way end of the book (despite Annabelle supposedly finding him super mature and insightful now, so different from before #eyeroll).
— There's insta-lust and instant attraction and although we're told they admire intellectual/emotional aspects of one another, I didn't buy it at all.
— The plot ploy is silly (Annabelle has to marry before her next birthday, in a month, in order to be able to keep the estate she lives on and takes care of), and that Quinn is called in to screen prospective husbands, pushing them all away, even though he's unwilling to marry her himself—okay, selfish much??
— Despite the fact that Quinn has no plans to stay in England, is moving to America in a few weeks and staying there, he acts so selfishly: pushing away potential suitors, putting the moves on Annabelle, trying to talk her into not marrying the available options, etc.
— Annabelle, for an apparently intelligent bluestocking strong woman, is as weak and silly as a puddle when it comes to Quinn; she falls all over herself for him, despite the fact that he ruined her in society and she's been essentially exiled since then and that he does not seem to have changed ONE IOTA in the years that have passed.
I could continue, but I'm going to save us both the trouble and just cut it off there. I found Annabelle silly and naive, selling herself short; Quinn is selfish, egotistical, and also super stupid (his objection to love is one of the lamest I have seen, and lord knows we see this issue come up QUITE a bit with our romance heroes); their relationship had no depth, the love wasn't believable, the plot was not very engaging, and they should have just gotten rid of the minor villain subplot that was forgotten about constantly and would then randomly pop up again.

Wow, another fantastic read by this author. My heart was touched at times through out the book and the emotional side of me could not get enough. I had to remove myself from reading to go and get my tissue! On the other side, what a wonderful historical romance. One with twists and life and turns and passion and all the romance you could wish for. Maybe a little heavy on the emotions for me but what a page turner! A creative and enthralling story to be lost inside of. So buy the book and just enjoy. Warning ..... make sure you have tissues with you! I was given this book in return for an honest review. Anna Harrington writes beautiful historical romance stories with strong female characters who know what they want and how they will get them. Quinn and Belle will draw you into their lives and you will be rooting for them to succeed and find love.
Annabelle and Quinton knew each other from childhood. She inherited Glenaron but she had to marry before her 25th birthday. Quinton was a scoundrel and had a horrible reputation.
The descriptions were amazing, vivid and added greatly to the story. The characters were realistic and so life like. Quinton enjoyed teasing and giving Belle a hard time, as he put it, he liked to see her fire. The plot has some twists to it and some surprises, like the barn burning and Quinton trying to run back in. The plot combined these and more parts together to make a cohesive tale. It moves smoothly and at a nice pace. I got little sleep, I had to finish it. I really loved this truly, wonderful story and hope you like it as much as I did. I received this from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed.
This was really cute! I didn't love Quentin as much as I did Sebastian though. And the first book is still my fav :) But still very enjoyable!
Loved this book....but you just have to love a good scoundrel story.
Quinton was lovable from the very beginning. Some heroes take warming up our at least warming up to. Quin was definitely not one of those. I liked him immediately.
Annabelle was smart and strong especially for a female of that time.
I won't even hint at any details of the book, but unlike some other books, the story did not taper to a predictable or slow ending.
When the Scoundrel Sins clearly shows why Anna Harrington is one of my go-to authors.
Another great story that will keep you up all night. I was allowed an advanced copy if I gave my honest review. And let me tell you this one will keep you flipping pages super fast. So glad the Carlisles are back. And they are finding women that can keep up with them.
I truly enjoyed this historical fiction. I found it well written and a flowing story line. I finished it in one sitting because I couldn't not handle not knowing what happens.
I loved this book! Harrington does such a good job of writing to your emotions. I felt bad for Annabelle because of everything she had to go through in her childhood (the parents who raised her and the lack of stability) to get to a place where she is finally happy, only to have that threatened if she doesn't marry before her twenty-fifth birthday. I could really feel the tension between Anabelle and Quinn when they are teasing each other and semi-flirting. There was enough of a plot too, that it kept my interest, with situational changes that kept the story fresh.
I received a copy of this book at no cost from the publisher.
I really loved this book and I already can't wait for the next book. The book is about Annabelle Green and she needs a husband fast to be able to inherit her home. But their is a problem when Quinton Carlisle seduced her into a scandalous tryst. I hope everyone one enjoys it as much as I did.
