THE AWAKENED WOMAN by Tererai Trent is a book with which I honestly want (and need) to spend more time. Trent was born in Zimbabwe, married at eighteen and a mother of four before she was able to realize her dream of an education. Amazingly, she now has a PhD and has built schools for girls in Zimbabwe. Her story is certainly inspirational and empowering. Her new book, THE AWAKENED WOMAN, as the publisher explains, encourages "women to pursue their sacred dreams through nine essential lessons brought forth from ancient African wisdom." In various chapters, Trent advocates for reclaiming your voice, for being your own storyteller and being courageous, not silent. These essentials are summarized near the end of the text and followed by several pages of recommended resources and further reading. Many of our girls' homeroom advisories are currently reading Dear Ijeawele by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and it could be very interesting for them to explore these ideas, too.
