This book is a great new way to explore the world of Stranger Things while waiting for the next season to be released. Any fan of the show would love to have this as a part of their collection!

Terrible. Badly researched with notes pulled from what seems like glossy magazines, trashy mags and z list celebrities and "journalists". Nothing to add for fans.

This is a fun companion to the two seasons of Stranger Things so far, with notes on the casting process, all the 80s references, character development, Winona Ryder's insistence on a Karen Silkwood haircut, Eggos and how to work with child actors.

Notes from the Upside Down is an unofficial guide to the hit Netflix Show, Stranger Things. (Season 1). The book talks about how the show came about and there is a chapter per episode where it talks about things that happened in each episode. There is also a quiz for champions of the show - which I totally sucked at, I guess I should watch the series a few more times and try again! There is also a lot of talk about the connections to Stephen King, Spielberg, John Carpenter and a lot of the 80s throwbacks. There are bios on the characters as well as a list of 80s movies that you should watch. I thought this was a great companion piece for the show, definitely read it as or after you have finished the first season!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

If you're a fan of Stranger Things (And if you're not, why not?) then you're going to enjoy this book. It was really interesting looking into different aspects of the show and the things which influenced certain parts. I liked the way the book was laid out, looking at one episode at a time, with footnotes, homework and a bunch of fun stuff. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

More Stranger Things before the show comes out with Season two?! Yes, please!

The synopsis explains this book as the ability to fill the demagogue whole in your heart that Stranger Things left when season one ended. I think this is a pretty adequate way of describing this book.

First off, I love Stranger Things for many reasons. I’m a Halloween fanatic, I think that happened to most of us that grew up in the 80’s. I love all things 80’s, so watching Stranger Things was like taking me back to a movie like Evil Dead, but Stranger Things was also able to make its very own mark. Not an easy thing to do when you’re up against so many power shows and movies that the 80’s gave us. This book explains, in lots of fabulous detail and witty, hilarious, and sometimes facetious side remarks, how they were able to create this show. With all the fantastic nostalgia and bloody goodness, that took us back to the 80’s and gave us a story that was similar but different enough to be exciting.

This book is all about how the writers brought this to us. The entirety of the book explains the detail behind how the show was created, what influenced the writers, the music, the movies, the books, etc. But it also goes through episode by episode and delves into the plot of the show.

Side note: I am a little sad to agree about Nancy but I liked the debate and insight into that character and what she did for the show.

To be completely honest, I am not sure which part I liked best. I wanted to devour the book, but I also wanted to read while watching the show, and knowing Notes was publishing soon, I had to read a bit faster than I would have liked, especially since it is chock full of information. Don’t get me wrong, this in no way reads like a manual. It dissects the show, line by line, and gives readers a taste of why the writers are writing the way they are.

Not that fans need more reasons to love this show, but I did not realize how many 80’s references were in this! At the end of the book is a small list of some of the references they used. This was the only disappointing part! I wanted the entire list but I think Guy Adams cut it dramatically. There is a ton of homework throughout, shows and movies to watch, music to listen to, it’s extensive! So, I am just going to go back through the book and write down the list and enjoy this homework!

Guy Adams also has a lot of extras added in, his own thoughts straight to the reader, which I loved. I’m a sarcastic person so every time he mentioned something that was a bit tongue in cheek, I just had to laugh. There are also quizzes throughout. I have to admit, with having only watched this once, I didn’t even try the quizzes. They’re tough! But, still the book is exquisitely fun to read and made me want to re-watch season one. Not that I needed an excuse. And afterwards, I’m attacking those quizzes!

In short: This is going to be fabulous for fans of 80’s and newbies to it, alike. I cannot wait to get this for all of my friends and family that loved Stranger Things as much as I did.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for this review copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really, really fell in love with this show when it debuted and since then I've always looked for a book like this. I'm a casual fan but enjoy the little tiny backstories and what not from tv shows. Overall a great edition to companion books with a really bright and catchy cover.
