I've always enjoyed this series and can count on Ms Coulter to give me a book I can just sit back and enjoy.
Enigma didn't disappoint. Well maybe a little, I missed having a lot of technical geeky details. I love getting into some of that and it really felt like it was tossed in later and left me with a minimal understanding of the why's instead of a fascinated I need to research and discuss this feeling...
Overall, another winner. I love the characters and still enjoy reading about them!
I love Savich and Sherlock! They are trying to solve a very strange kidnapping and looking for an escaped bank robber at the same time. When a young man, who seems deranged, forces his way into a young, pregnant woman's house, a neighbor calls Savich. The man isn't making any sense at all. He keeps saying that he is there to save the woman and her baby. The man ends up in a coma and is a very big mystery. Then the woman goes into labor. After having the baby, the baby is kidnapped. Does it have anything to do with the John Doe? An Irishman who was convicted of murder, a murder that happened while he was robbing a bank, is on his way to prison when the van is attacked and the prisoner is set free. Wittier and Cabot search for the bank robber through the forest in Kentucky and then back to Washington, D.C. The chase ends up exposing a plot that involves a staffer close to the President of the US. Lots of twists and turns.
When FBI agent stops a madman from harming a pregnant woman, he finds more questions than answers when the mystery that surrounds this man deepens as the guy goes into a coma. When the woman he rescued has her baby, Savich finds out that the mystery continues especially after her baby is kidnapped hours after birth. Now Savich and Sherlock are in a race to figure out the answers to this mystery as fellow agents, Cam Wittier & Jack Cabot, work on finding an escaped federal prisoner in Daniel Boone National Park. Who would help this killer go free and why? Is Savich’s mystery connected to the escape prisoner or is there more to the story?
Get ready to be swept away as Catherine Coulter ramps up the action in this thrilling installment in her beloved FBI Thriller series in ENIGMA. I just love this series and adore Savich and Sherlock’s relationship as well as their interactions with fellow agents and other secondary characters. From the first page to the last, the reader is thrust in two stories in ENIGMA that will leave you reeling from all the twists and turns. I just love her dual plots in her FBI series and find them totally engrossing and thrilling as I flipped the pages to see what would happen next for Savich, Sherlock, Cam and Jack. This is an author who really keeps the reader on their toes with her thrillers. The cases are intriguing and I, for one, can’t figure out until most of the way through the book who are the bad guys are and why they are doing it. That is the testament to this author’s writing prowess and each book in this series keeps the momentum going. The books are not getting stale even after twenty-one stories in the FBI Thriller series.
ENIGMA features two mysteries that may or may not be connected. Savich and Sherlock are trying to figure out why a deranged man targeted a pregnant woman and then collapsed. Plus when that woman’s new baby is kidnapped, well let’s just say the stakes rise even higher. Cam and Jack are trying to find escaped federal prisoner, Liam Hennessey (AKA Manta Ray) in Daniel Boone National Park and find more questions as well as few answers. Who helped Liam escape and why? Both these cases would be intriguing on their own but put them together with a few twists and turns I sure did not see coming, I found myself on the edge of my seat racing alongside these four agents as they tried to find the answers before the clock struck twelve. This is truly a thrilling edge of the seat ride that truly doesn’t let up even after the last page is read. I found ENIGMA to be one of those rare books that I will reread again soon just to get back to those wonderful characters.
ENIGMA is more than a typical thriller, it’s all about people and Ms. Coulter deftly created a series of characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. I am eager to see where this author goes in the series as I impatiently await more in the series. Now how long do I have to wait for the next book?
This is an objective review and not an endorsement
When FBI detective Dillon Savich saves Kara Moody from a hostage taker, little, does he know he will be in a race against time to figure out the Enigma.
Kara is in labor after the kidnapping. She remembers the words of her captor "I can't let them take me...take you! It's evil, a monstrous evil." She gives birth, and a few hours later her son Alex is missing. Detective Savich and Sherlock are not only on duty to find a kidnapper but to unravel a twisted plot of a mad scientist obsessed with finding the secrets to immortality. While the two detectives enmeshed with science, Agent Cam Witter (from Insidious #20) and former special forces agent Jack Cabot are in a cat and mouse chase in the Appellations foothills to find an escaped prisoner who was in transport to Lee Federal Penitentiary. Manta Ray, an Irish master thief, is wanted for grand theft for six security boxes. But a Russian interest also wants to capture Manta Ray and his stash that is more important than he's aware.
Enigma is a story that blends science with a thrill ride against crime. The narrative's fast pace delivers a plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. There are many moving parts to this novel, and it all works together brilliantly. The characters are well-developed, and two plots-lines are twisting seamlessly. Coulter offers palpable emotion in the characters, ambiance that puts you in center stage, and imagery that your eyes can see. Especially when the lights suddenly turn off in the parking garage, you feel the anticipation and tension. Coulter does her research when it comes to the medical system. The details of several classes of drugs, therapy, and the infrastructure of a hospital setting are on point. My only critique is a predictable nature of parts of the story, but that did not detract from the enjoyment of the novel.
Unwittingly, I picked out this book unaware of the 20 books that came before. But the story stood well on its own; characters developed well enough to retain my investment. Enigma is my first Catherine Coulter novel, and I was pleasantly surprised by intricate plots emerging in a well-written narrative. I may need to start at book #1.
Thank you, NetGalley, Gallery Books, for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Enigma by Catherine Coulter
FBI thriller with recurring characters Savich and Sherlock from this long running series. This is the 21st book and while it can stand alone a mystery, having some familiarity with the series will make it a better and richer storyline.
Since it is a series, there is a lot of name dropping in the first 50 pages as the story gets set up for the FBI team to go after the escapee. Keeping track of them all can be a bit difficult.
Chapters alternate between characters and situations.
Overall I really enjoyed the quick action, intelligent analysis, and how all the threads wove together.
Multiple epilogues wrapped up several relationships and started new directions. Don't skip these or you will miss the fun.
I received a copy of the book from NetGalley.
Four seemingly unrelated cases baffle FBI agents Sherlock and Savich in the 21st entry in the series.
A woman is held hostage in her house by a dirty and confused man who says he only wants to protect her. A killer is rescued from his initial prison transport and disappears. A newborn is kidnapped from a hospital. The son of a US Senator is suspected of murdering his girlfriend but he has no memory of the event.
There are many plot strands in Enigma that are woven together expertly. Ms. Coulter is obviously an experienced thriller writer. I particularly enjoyed the scientific aspects of the plot. There hasn’t been a good science thriller since Robin Cook and Michael Crichton died. Enigma eventually evolves into a fascinating exploration of anti-aging technology.
I would recommend Enigma to anyone who likes to read FBI procedurals or scientific thrillers. It is not necessary to read any previous entries in this series to enjoy this novel.
Thanks to the publisher, Gallery, and netgalley for the advanced review copy in exchange for my honest review. Enigma will be available September 12, 2017.
ENIGMA by Catherine Coulter
It’s that time again, where your heart races and you can barely catch a breath as you are frantically turning the pages of, yes, another Savich and Sherlock, FBI Thriller by genius author Catherine Coulter. Did I say genius? Of course, she must be a genius to be able to come up with these wonderfully intriguing tales. Tales that have you holding your breathe in anticipation of what’s coming next, to exhaling in great satisfaction at the ending of another pulse-pounding masterpiece.
This time around Special Agents Savich and Sherlock are drawn into a case where a newborn is kidnapped after his mother was saved by Savich, from a crazed man who broke into her house. Only known as “John Doe” the man falls into a coma before he can explain why he felt the need to save this young woman and her baby.
After John Doe’s blood work comes back showing a cocktail of various drugs, including a mysterious one, Savich and Sherlock find themselves face to face with a mad scientist that will stop at nothing to produce a fountain of youth serum.
We also are introduced to Special Forces Agent Jack Cabot, who is called in for his specialized tracking skills to help Special Agent Cam Wittier find international criminal, Liam “Manta Ray” Hennessey. Manta Ray, with help from unknown source, escaped custody and is hiding out in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Jack and Cam will find Hennessy’s daring escape was carried out by someone who has ties from Russia all the way to the Whitehouse.
Catherine Coulter has once again plunged me head first into the fast-paced life of my two favorite characters, Savich and Sherlock. It always amazes me by how fast I’m pulled into their story. The only complaint I have is it’s just a little too long between our adventures!
***Thanks to the publisher, Gallery Books and Net Galley for providing me
a copy of this in exchange for my honest opinion.***
I have read every one of the FBI novels by Catherine Coulter and love each one. I was so happy to be chosen to read the newest novel for Net Galley. It's a great read, as always, featuring Sherlock and Savich as well as several other FBI agents.
This book tells about two separate cases involving Sherlock & Savich. One starts with a young man trying to reach & save a single, pregnant young woman that he's never met. Save from what? That's the question. The other case starts with the well planned escape of a very dangerous man on his way to prison. Who was the mastermind and what was his motive?
Another great book by Catherine Coulter!
Twenty one books into this series and you have to feel like it would be staid and predictable. And to a certain extent, it is, but I still enjoyed this one and its twists and turns. I wasn't as surprised by the climax of it or the ending but it was a solid thriller. What I don't love about the turn that this series has taken is that the romance has dropped out from it. This used to be one of my favorite romantic suspense series but now I would just call it a thriller series because there is truly zero romance. I am sure this is by design but I long for the earlier books and the romance along with the thrill.
Enigma comes out next week on September 12, 2017, and you can purchase HERE. This made up for a few of the last books in this series that I haven't loved but still isn't comparable for the first 15 or so books in this series that I couldn't put down. You can read my review of book #20 in this series HERE.
"You really do look like a vampire in the moonlight," Cam said. "I could suggest using a tanning bed occasionally, might help keep people form trying to stake you."
This book grabbed me from the start and I read it in one day. I really like her characters, especially in re-occuring series. Her mysteries are always well crafted and keep you hanging till the end
Once again a great, quick paced read with seamless multiple storylines. Love Sherlock & Savich and can't wait for the next one!!
Two sets of crimes are being investigated by the CAU. Two newer members are chasing down an escaped bank robber known as Manta Ray while Sherlock and Savich are investigating a young man who broke into a pregnant woman's home to " save" her. He went into a coma and was hospitalized. The woman also went into labor and delivered a baby boy at the same hospital who was then stolen from it. The plot is very complex with many twists and turns and the characters, even some of the villains, are likable. The reader will get involved from the onset. Fun reading. Thanks to Net Galley and Simon and Schuster for an ARC for an honest review.
Edge of your seat thriller. I love Savich and Sherlock. These books make me feel as though I have a ring side seat while the FBI goes about its business. Very well written. Excellent character development. Absolutely loved this book.
Not bad, but the layout of the story telling annoyed me. Jumping from one team to the next after each mini cliff hanger got to be predictable and took me out of the flow of the narrative each time. The pay off in each of those scenarios was OK, but nothing that exciting. And by the end of the book things got a little preachy regarding the pros and cons of DNA use in repairing age related diseases or effects.
All in all I would give this a 5 out of 10.
Be prepared for drama and action as the FBI’s CAU division deals with a medical megalomaniac and a mastermind killer who shows no mercy. The twenty-first book in the series is just as strong, thrilling, suspenseful and intriguing as the first twenty. These villains aren’t quite as twisted as some of them have been, but they still provide you with a shiver down the spine. Coulter chose not to use Savich’s ‘special’ gift in this book and I wonder if she’s decided to move away from that angle.
I love that you almost always get multiple cases in one book and this one has two. Both are interesting, but very different and the agents involved are also different and interesting.
Case 1 provides the name for the book – Enigma. When Dillon Savich’s friend, Dr. Janice Hudson, calls him to hurry over because she thinks her friend and neighbor is in trouble, he finds a mad man holding the neighbor hostage. The man has the neighbor, Kara Moody, duct taped to a chair and he’s raving about saving her from ‘them’ and screaming that he is an enigma. The madman ends up in a coma and Kara goes into labor. When Kara’s baby is stolen from the hospital and an attempt is made on the madman’s life the FBI goes into high gear trying to find the baby and figure out the connection between the madman, Kara, and the baby. The answer will intrigue and astound you.
Case 2 has agents Cam Wittier and Jack Cabot tracking down an escaped robber and murderer, Liam Hennessey, aka Manta Ray. The escape was perfectly planned and executed, but how could the prisoner have possibly coordinated such a plan when he’d had no visitors except his lawyer? The answer to that leads you to blackmail at the highest levels of government as well as murder and intrigue. Hennessey escapes into a forest in Kentucky and then escapes the forest by helicopter. There must be someone rich and powerful helping Hennessey, but who can it be and why would they be interested in helping a robber and murderer escape?
Weaving back and forth between the two storylines, multiple intriguing characters and diverse locations will keep you turning pages as fast as you can to see what happens next. It is definitely a must read!
“I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.”
Enigma by Catherine Coulter leaves me with my usual reviewing quandary for her books. They are all superb, can't put them down page-turners. This one is no exception. They just get better and better. Sherlock and Savich entertain as always and leave us with a moral issue to ponder.
I hope the next book is on the near horizon.
Loved! This is a fast paced thriller that fans of the genre will love. This is a great story and could have been pulled from tomorrow's front page. While this has a bit of science fiction, it feels disturbingly possible and kept me turning pages just as quickly as possible.
Sherlock and Savich insert themselves after Savich helps a neighbor with an urgent problem. Unfortunately, Savich's being there put him right in the orbit of a cop that hates him and is out to make his life hell, through any means necessary - even at the risk of community safety.
These odd circumstances seem unrelated, but with Max's help (super computer), Sherlock and Savich strive to makes sense of things and solve the crimes.
Fans of the genre will love this book. While this is part of a series, this is a stand alone novel. Additionally, while it is book 21 in the series, this feels just as fresh and engaging as book 1 in the series. The author is on my must read authors' list.
This was a nicely twisty mystery that brought back favorite characters and introduced new ones too. Savich is called by a neighbor when an expectant woman named Kara's home is invaded by a man who is drugged or delirious. Savich saves her and takes both of them to the hospital where Kara delivers a baby boy and the invader is in a coma.
Meanwhile, Jack Cabot and Cam Wittier are on the track of Liam Hennessey who is a bank robber who has managed to escape from custody in disappear into the Daniel Boone National Forest with two unknowns. While they are trying to track him down, Ruth and Ollie are busy interviewing the lawyer who convinced him to take the plea deal and who was his only visitor in jail.
Sherlock and Savich are also investigating the owners of the safe deposit boxes that were emptied during the bank robbery. When tracking down one of the owners they learn that she might be a witness in a murder case. The girl friend of the president's adviser's son was murdered and the son could be a suspect.
When Kara's son Alex is kidnapped from the hospital one day after he is born, Savich and Sherlock have a new twist to their case.
There are other plot threads too which are woven into an intriguing and suspenseful mystery. This book kept me reading because I just had to know how all the different plot threads twisted together and how they would all be resolved. Fans of the Sherlock and Savich books won't want to miss this newest episode.
Dark and violent beginning. I don't need to put that into my mind. Guess I'm done with serial killers and psychopaths no matter how brilliant the law enforcement involved. Could not read.
