Love Savich & Sherlock and team. Enigma was page-turning and full of exciting entertainment and mystery. Very interesting how two stories became one. Enigma is one of the best by far in the FBI thrillers cannot wait to see if the next tops it. An exciting read for sure. Hats off to one of my favorite authors!
I have not read a book by this author that I did not immediately like and this one was no exception. A lot of the action (Pennington Gap, VA, Corbin and London, KY) takes place near where I was born and raised and still have family residing so it was even more interesting. As always the action is nearly non stop. As the story progresses it switches between locales but is done so seamlessly and you never lose track of the plot or the various characters (both good and bad). The overall theme of the evil plot is credible and will leave you scratching your head and wondering if research is being, or will be, done in this area of medical science.
I have rated this book 5 stars. I was so caught up in this book that I read it in one day.
I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review.
In Catherine Coulter's 21st in the FBI Thriller series, Enigma (Gallery Books/Simon & Schuster 2017) FBI Agents and husband-and-wife Savitch and Sherlock find themselves trying to unravel a mysterious attack on a pregnant woman by a man who seems demented, claiming he is an 'enigma'. When the woman goes into labor right after the attack is thwarted and delivers her baby, the infant is immediately kidnapped and the man who attacked her ends up in a coma and barely escapes being killed in his hospital bed. A surprise twist binds the new mother and the attacker together and it's up to Savitch and Sherlock to find her child and unravel the mystery that surrounds him. All this is going on while another part of Savitch's team is chasing an escaped prisoner who is vicious and remorseless.
As with all the books in this series, Enigma is a tightly-plotted, fast-moving winner of a read. Definitely recommended to thriller lovers, as is the rest of the series.

This book actually has two stories that are very loosely connected. In the first, a man, who appears deranged, enters the home of a pregnant single soon-to-be-mother, trying to abduct her, to protect remove her from the premises to protect her and her unborn child from who knows what. Special Agent Dillon Savich, called by a neighbor who has known him forever, intervenes, saving the woman and shooting the man. The woman goes into labor, delivers a baby boy, Alex, who is then shortly abducted from the hospital. Meanwhile her would-be kidnapper lies in the same hospital, totally unresponsive, in a coma. Dillon cannot make much sense of what has happened, and he and his wife, Special Agent Sherlock, along with his team of agents, begin trying to figure out what is going on. At the same time, in the second story, Dillon has the escape of a robber from prison on his radar. This con has escaped during transport between two prisons, with obvious help from outside. Dillon dispatches two new agents, both of who have pretty good outdoor skills, to assist in tracking the con through a dense federally owned park. They continue to track this con into a wealthy area in Virginia, At that point the loose connection between the stories begins to come more into focus. These two stories continue throughout the book, as Dillon Savich and his team work to solve these puzzles. Are they somehow connected? Can Special Agent Savich and his team figure out the clues and end this puzzling madness and bring things together? The book follows these stories through a myriad of clues and events to an interesting conclusion. Both stories, as I said, are only loosely connected.
Enigma was a fast-moving story once you got past the first half, where the author is setting the stage with characters, history and events to bring out the stories. I found the first chapters slow and a bit difficult to get through. There was a lot to cover, and, though the author did it all well, it still just did not grab me all that much. However, once this was past, the story became quite interesting and fascinating, as I watched the agents sift through clues and events to figure out what was going on and to reach a conclusion. I do not understand why the author had two story lines going at the same time, as I think the book would have been okay with just one. I also do not think it was all tied together all that well in the end. However, as with the other books in the series (and I have read them all), I enjoyed reading about the latest goings on with Dillon and his wife Sherlock and their ever resourceful and astute team. I think anyone who enjoys this series will enjoy this book. It is a bit long, but, as I said, once you get into it, it reads well and quickly. This is definitely a solid cop and robber story, with two plots that make the reader feel right at home in this genre. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
I have been reading Catherine Coulter books for many years and she is consistently good. If you like romantic suspense, she is a great author to check out!
Absolutely Fantastic. This book is Intense, full of action, and will hold your attention. As always Catherine Coulter wrote an outstanding book. I highly recommend reading this book.
The threat of our ability outreaching our wisdom is not a new concern. This book looks at what happens when we move forward in science because we can and not because we should. The author presents the truths of both sides in this fast moving novel. It isn't pretentious but does provoke a bit of thought here and there. All in all a read I can confidently recommend,
Enigma by Catherine Coulter is a fast-paced mystery/thriller with enough plot twists and turns and unexpected connections to make a person's head spin. The book centers on a number of FBI agents, who are trying to work through who the mysterious man is, who broke into a young woman's home muttering about keeping her safe, while also binding her to a chair, they then are quickly thrown into uncovering a new mystery that involves this same young woman. Meanwhile, one of the biggest prison breaks of all times occurs, and a notorious criminal seems to disappear from his transport van. Do these incidents have connections? It certainly does not appear to be the case...but you would have to read the book to see where Coulter was heading with all of these different story line. While I found it a bit difficult to keep the various characters straight, the plot kept moving and I was eventually able to make sense out of what was happening and with whom. The story moved quickly and takes the reader on quite a ride. Despite this, Enigma, was not my most favorite book of the year. It's is not a bad story at all, but it did take a bit to get into the story, because I had a challenging time with following all the different characters. It also felt a bit like it all came together too easily in the end. Regardless, it was still a good book, that kept my interest once it grabbed it, and gripped it till the end.
Catherine Coulter is a brilliant writer who can keep readers turning pages as fast as they can. This story is no different! Savich and Sherlock have two mysteries on their hands but they are equal to the task.
The pace of this book was a little slower than I usually like, it was interesting enough that I did get through it.
I wasn't especially pleased with the lack of character development. I like to know the player in the drama, I don't feel the author did enough in this regard.
WOW talk about starting off a book with a BANG! I was glued to my kindle, I am telling you Enigma is jammed pack with chaos! Catherine Coulter writes an amazing thriller and she is truly my go to writer!
Agent Dillion Savich is amazing! He is dealing with a scientist who is trying to live forever and is targeting people to use for his "experiments". Enigma is truly a race against time for Agent Savich. He needs to stop the mad sciences and save his victims! Those few sentences were painfully hard to write as I do not want to give away anything! Catherine Coulter is an amazing writer and in Enigma she does not disappoint!
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. This is another aweybook by Catherine Coulter in the FBI series! I have to say that I have yet to read a book on this series that I haven't liked. In this one, they meet again, Manta Ray and once again he thinks that he is smarter than anyone else. They also meet a man who has been kidnapped and had medical expimenents done on him. They also meet a woman who is pregnant and doesn't know how she got that way. Welcome to the world of Enigma. This is another great and wonderful thriller by Catherine Coulter involving Sherlock and Savich and the wonderful world of MAX.
Agents Savich and Sherlock are on the trail of an escaped convict and an mad research scientist. The two stories keep you guessing with so many twists and turns you need a score card! Love this series and it does not disappoint.
I am a longtime fan of Catherine Coulter I love all of her books. My favorites though are these FBI thrillers. At first I was a little unsure, I read the description and thought sounds a little out there, but the world is a scary place right now and I guess anything is possible. I really did like this book a lot. A lot of my favorite characters were in this, and a couple new ones. Even if you have not read all of the FBI thrilers you can pick this book up and enjoy the book. Might even make you go back and read the others ! Enjoy the book !
From the first word of the prologue you are thrown into the madness. And then it ends abruptly and the first chapter starts and the chaos begins again. This quickly-paced thriller flashes among a number of locations as we watch various individuals in their quests to follow the multiple investigative threads. Part Robin Cook medical future-medicine intrigue and part Tom Clancy techno-thriller (hmmmm--not really much military, though), author Catherine Coulter drives and flies us around the nation's capitol and its beautiful suburbs and up into Baltimore with a side trip to Kentucky. Enjoy your travelogue! Meanwhile the FBI is hot on the trail of murderers and kidnappers and foreign spies in a ripped-from-the-headlines intrigue. There is even time for a bit of cooking and a hint of romance. I wonder whom they will ask to play the President in the movie version?
I hadn't read any of Ms Coulter's books but had heard of her (well, duh, I read and she writes--famously) and thought I'd see what the fuss was about. The blurb tells me this is #21 in a series but aside from recognizing many of the characters had deeper backstories with which I was unfamiliar, this book stands quite well on its own. So thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for making it available for me to enjoy!
Mysterious attacks, a kidnapped infant, friends who aren't friends, escaped convicts, and FBI agents come together to make an interesting, engaging thriller. I haven't visited with Savich and Sherlock in a while, and it was nice to see them again. The whiplash-fast point-of-view changes were sometimes a bit unsettling, but they also kept me reading, eager to get back to pov characters I most wanted to follow. The ending felt a little to fairy-tale-ish to me, and the "moral of the story" Author's Note was a bit heavy-handed. But overall, it was a good story and a fast-paced read.
The publisher's description is more than a little misleading. While this novel may contain the potential to reach those heights, the reality is a pleasant enough read, but not overly insightful or intriguing. It feels more like a TV episode of NCIS or something along those lines. Enjoyable yet forgettable.
I love this series because sometimes it's a normal mystery, sometimes it's logical, and sometimes it's off-the-wall crazy psycho mysteries. I just never know what I'm going to pick up. I just know, I'm going to love the characters and the writing. I'd imagine it's a bit how people in the line of duty feel each time they walk out the door for work.
As for Enigma, it's absolutely a story I'll read again. It's interesting and even though I didn't like several of the characters the story was compelling and I wanted to know what would happen. The mystery was scientifically chilling even as the pieces came together.
4.5 Stars
Catherine Coulter’s Enigma is the latest release in her FBI thriller series. The book does a great job of pulling together several plots that include a baby snatching, a dramatic prisoner escape, and powerful Russian financiers who are personae non-gratae in the US. These plots are connected by the FBI agents who work the high-profile cases and their interrelationships.
Enigma is the first book I’ve read in the FBI series for several years. I admit that it took me a couple pages to get all the team members straight in my head, but it isn’t difficult. They all fall into place quickly. There are relationships that I didn’t know. However, it is easy to catch up even though I don’t have all the history. The focus of the story is the FBI procedural, not the relationships. There is a new relationship brewing that is promising and makes me want to follow them in the future.
What you get in Enigma is multiple murders, a couple unexpected twists, and deceptions that made me continually turn the page. Since this story focus is the mystery, it is explained and laid out interestingly. I often feel like I’m a member of the team getting a firsthand briefing on the status of the crimes and riding along on the takedown.
I enjoyed this book. I’m reminded how much I like Ms. Coulter’s writing and how far behind I am on the relationships, both personal and professional. This is an outstanding read. The characters—both the primary characters and the villains—add a lot to my reading enjoyment. The tenderness and empathy of the FBI team are touching at times. The intricate plot is well developed and kept me guessing at times. I am ready to catch up with the books I missed in this series. I highly recommend this book to any thriller/suspense fans. You won’t regret it.
As always, Coulter brings a great story to the reader. I have developed a great fondness for Sherlock and Savin over the years and this seems to be send-off as we meet. Cam and Jack. I look forward to following their story in books to come.
