While I thoroughly enjoyed Austenland and then the best comfort-rewatch rom-com that it birthed, I had trouble getting into MIDNIGHTS IN AUSTENLAND and finishing. Hale hasn't quite unlocked the formula with this book set in the same world that could have birthed a series of stories all centered around Austenland the location. While I was happy to cheer Jane on as she regained her self-worth amongst the perfectly set-up romances in Austenland, I wasn't as invested in Charlotte's story.
Going through my netgalley account and just found the section of books titled Archived, not downloaded. I apparently requested and was approved for this book but I never DLd it and so did not read it. I appreciate the approval and while still interested in the title I am not sure when I will get to read it. If/when I do I will be sure to post a review on Instagram, goodreads, storygraph, and Amazon.
I loved the first Austenland and this one is a just successor.
After a painful divorce, Charlotte attends a two-week vacation at Pembrook Park, an Austen role-plaing bed and breakfast. The other participants are welcoming yet strange, and a Northanger Abby-type gothic plot emerges with tales of ghosts in the manor. Fun book.
What a fun read! Midnight in Austenland by Shannon Hale is a witty romp through a middle-aged woman's vacation at the Regency period Pembroke Park, meant to replicate life during Jane Austen's time. The recently divorced mother of two laces up her corset and tries to let herself enjoy the atmosphere, but self-doubt and mitigating circumstances make that a challenge. While romance is not my favorite genre, I love Hale's young adult books and couldn't resist reading this. Her writing flows and she captures her characters' personalities well. She deftly weaves mystery into the plot and provides just the right amount of plot twists and turns for a light read. I liked this better than its predecessor, Austenland. I primarily work with teens and this may appeal to some of the older girls, but I will especially recommend it to their moms! Sometimes it's nice to escape to a world where problems get resolved and things turn out just right.
