Hope's Peak is a small town that is not immune from controversy. Their supposedly corrupt Police Captain is gunned down in his own front yard. Shortly after, a retired detective is gunned down in a grocery store parking lot.
Jane Harper, our lead protagonist, sees the second shooting, but the new Captain wants nothing to do with Harper's "infavorable" ways of investigating. Working from behind the scenes, with her friend (and local physic) Ida Lane, Harper is taken down a road of police corruption.

I did not read the first one, as this was an ARC I randomly got accepted for. I may have had a better understanding of the characters if I did, but due to Ida's visions you got a pretty clear scoop on the background.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advance copy of Storm's Edge, the second novel in the Harper and Lane series, set in the fictional small American town Hope's Peak.

Hope's Peak Police Department is still reeling from the death of serial killer Lester Simmons and the discovery of rampant police corruption when first Captain Frank Morelli is gunned down outside his house then Detective Jane Harper sees ex Detective Bill Marshall assassinated the same way. Put on leave for her unorthodox investigative practices Jane is determined to pursue the killer and enlists psychic Ida Lane to help her.

I enjoyed Storm's Edge as something a bit different from my usual fare. The plot gallops along at a fast clip and thus holds the reader's interest. As it is a fairly short novel it doesn't have time to develop much depth so it's more action and psychic visions than anything else. I don't in this case see that as a negative as it's well done with a fast pace.

I have not read the first novel in the series, Hope's Peak, and I think this was a mistake as Storm's Edge is very much a sequel. I would have got much more from the read if I had and there now doesn't seem much point in going back to it now as so much is summarised here.

I'm not normally big on psychics as I have trouble giving them any credence but Ida's visions which mostly involve connecting with the dead and living rather than foreseeing the future (just as well as she gets into danger) are a useful plot device which allow the author to expand his characters in an unusual and interesting way. It works very well.

Storm's Edge is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.
