Shauna is doing all she can to stay a float after the death of her husband. When it seems that someone might be after her, it seems the only person she can turn to is the one person she blames for her husbands death and the one person she can't stand to be around. Can she get to the bottom of whats going on and protect herself and her son or will all become to much?
Zach has enough guilt over his best friends death. His life changed in just a tiny moment and all he wants to do is protect Shauna and her son and try and make peace with the past. Will he be up for all thats thrown at him or will it finally be to much for him?
Where to begin with this book. This book was so amazing and I can't wait for more from this series. This book will not disappoint it will keep on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end. I really enjoyed the message of forgiveness in this book, that no matter what can go wrong we need to find the forgiveness for each other. I really loved that this book was a good clean read and that it was perfect for all ages. (teens through adults). You really can't go wrong with this book you will think you have it all figured out when the author throws a wrench into the mix only to keep you guessing.
As I read The View from Rainshadow Bay, I could smell the lavender. Colleen Coble is a great writer of suspense. Following Shauna's story gave me goosebumps at times. Shauna's character is a strong woman, who can take care of herself. But her journey to the truth reveals who she really needs to lean on. This is also a book about redemption with secondary characters taking center stage at times. If you enjoy suspense and adventure, you'll want to read this first book of the Lavender Tides series.
I didn't enjoy this book very much. It was very difficult for me to even pick up the pace for the first couple of chapters and I had to start over many times. The main problem was the number of new characters that were introduced in the first 20 pages: Shauna, Zach, Clarence, Stuart, Lucy, Alex, Marilyn, Jack, Nora, Karl, Everett. Considering that only a few people are protagonists, side characters should be written in slowly and only when they serve a purpose.
Also, the book starts with a mysterious bombing and it puts everything in motion right away. I felt that this didn't give me time to even care about the death and the threat to our main characters.
I was really looking forward to reading this title, but I couldn't manage to the final chapters.
The View From Rainshadow Bay is a mystery with some romance thrown in. There are Christian undertones to it as well. I had some issues with the consistency of the characters, the story, and some things that seemed pretty far-fetched.
As for the characters, I felt like the killer was not consistent. The killer goes from gleefully killing certain people to not wanting to kill others, and uses a different method for every single killing. Also one of the staged accidents would have been near impossible to stage. How would the killer have known exactly where they would be or exactly when to lie in wait?
There are other things like one person tying three men up while holding them at gunpoint with a rifle. There is no way one person could do that and still keep the rifle on the men. The three men could have overpowered that person and gotten away pretty easily.
As for the inconsistencies in the story, one example would be this: there is a package that has something in it that the killer wants, but the killer did not know the sheriff had the items that were in the package, so the killer goes after two different people in the book believed to have those items. But later on suddenly the killer knows the sheriff has these items, but gave one of them back to the main character? That doesn't make sense. Things like this just really annoyed me about this book. And don't get me started on guns being able to shoot off locks and silencers making guns completely noiseless, which is also included in the book. There were just too many inconsistencies and implausibilities in this book for me to completely enjoy it.
This is the second Colleen Coble book I've read. The other was Haven of Swans. I liked it better than this one, and I did not catch the same types of inconsistencies and implausibilities in that one. Other than those issues, so far I feel like her books are a little slow and just not compelling enough for me, especially for a series. Plus this one was very predictable and it was very easy to figure out who the killer was. This is the first book in a series, but I don't see a need for this to be a series, since everything is wrapped up in the end, and it works fine as a stand-alone, so I'm going to leave it at that.
I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher Thomas Nelson for giving me a copy of this book for review.
The View the Rainshadow Bay was my first Colleen Coble book and first in a new series. I always had heard about Coble's books, but always ended up picking up one in the middle of a series. The plot is way more complex. It starts when grieving window Shauna visits a friend who asks her to mail a package. As she drives away, the friend's house explodes and is engulfed in flames. The mystery begins, and Coble weaves a complex tale that will keep the reader guessing until the final pages. The "shaking"scientific invention was far fetched and almost ruined the book.
I’ve read numerous books written by Colleen Coble. She has a gift for storytelling and a special knack for romantic suspense. She’s on my ‘favorites’ list, and I have 18 of her books. As you may know, I’m initially drawn to a book by its cover. This one, by far, has the most eye-catching cover art.
The View from Rainshadow Bay is a suspenseful read with themes of forgiveness and desire to love again, and has just the right amount of romance. I was drawn into the characters and moved through the story with a few surprises. The scenic descriptions are vivid, but not overdone, and the mystery is plausible.
I enjoy stories where the characters are overcoming a painful or traumatic past. Shauna and Zach have gone through a lot, and have many matters to sift through. I liked the buildup of their relationship, and the twists and turns they encountered.
The pacing was good in some of the more suspenseful parts, but a little slow in others. Overall this story kept my interest.

First Lines (Chapter 1): She never got tired of this panoramic view. Shauna McDade dipped her helicopter, a six-passenger Airbus, low over the tops of the trees lining Puget Sound and saluted The Mountain that stood sentinel over Seattle, Mount Rainier.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley.
This first book in a new series by Coble was excellent! I am not really sure about the title since the plot really didn’t have much to do with Rainshadow Bay. I was rooting for Shauna and Zach to overcome their differences and get together. The mystery was good—just felt a little contrived at times. Coble did throw in several twists that kept things interesting. I figured out the “villain”, but not really any motivation other than greed for all his “dastardly deeds.” I would recommend this novel (and pretty much anything else that Colleen Coble writes) to anyone looking for a gentle love story with some suspense thrown in.
I absolutely love Colleen Coble books! A well written suspenseful story. I was drawn into the story and characters immediately. Colleen incorporates love, forgiveness, commitment to God, and a powerful ending that left me on the edge of my seat. An engaging page-turner that keeps you glued to the book until the last page. I’m now anxiously waiting for the next book in this series. 😊
Wow, wow, wow! That is the first thing I thought after I finished The View from Rainshadow Bay. This novel was a fantastic first novel in this series for Colleen Coble. I cannot wait to read her next book in this series! This book is filled with suspense, romance, and entertainment. The story of Shauna and Zach pulls the reader in to want to read more and more. The suspense filled scenes make the reader wonder who is behind everything that is occurring and what is going to happen next. If you have never read Ms. Coble, you will not be disappointed. If you have read her books, I think you will find this to be a great addition to your collection. One aspect of Ms. Coble’s books that I enjoy is that they are clean and filled with Christian themes. Ms. Coble shows how God works in her characters’ lives. I HIGHLY recommend this book.
***I was given a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest opinion. Even though I received this copy free, I have purchased her books before.
The author knows how to write a classic who-dun-it mystery. It is so good it just pulls in the reader and next things you know you are at the end of the book just wanting more. This book is so real, it is filled with just enough tension and sweet romance mixed in you feel like you are right there with these characters. I love the setting and it just sounds so lovely there in the mountains with the lavender fields and the bay, it just sounds like the perfect place and just a beautiful setting for this book. I hope there are more books to this series.
A beautiful cover. A mystery book with some romance. The story was slow.
I don't know how she does it, but Colleen Coble has an incredible gift for writing books that keep me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I love how she expertly weaves Shauna and Zach's story together in the midst of lots of mystery. Also, I am a huge fan of this cover!!! Gorgeous.
3.5 stars from this reader.
This multi faceted novel by Coble was my first by this author. Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review the ARC. I found the protagonists easy to relate to and very likable and realistic. The prologue itself grips you from the get go ratcheting up the suspense as it opens with a woman being chased through fields of lavender in this Pacific Northwest setting, which happens to be one of my favorites. The cover of the book is lovely, but In my humble opinion, the title of the novel does not do it justice. It is a murder/mystery romantic suspense. A snappier title than "The View...." would have more of a draw for mystery fans..
Protagonist Shauna McDade is a helicopter pilot, with a 5 year old son, Alex. Having been widowed about a year, Shauna is still reeling from the loss of her husband Jack after a tragic accident took his life while he was on a daring climb with his best friend, Zach Bannister. They were all very close at one time, but since her husband death, she can't even bare to look at Zach and holds him responsible for what happened on that climb. Zach has felt guilty for it himself, as his daredevil life-style was the catalyst for the accident.
Circumstances bring Shauna and Zach reluctantly together as bodies start falling in this small town. There are several twists and turns in this mystery that keep the reader engaged and in suspense while trying to figure out who is killing who and why. When some evidence is uncovered in present tense, it has Shauna and Zach wondering if Jack's "accident" a year prior may not have been an accident after all. The character development is fleshed out adequately, the setting vividly described, and the emotions believable.
This author is known for her Christian fiction and mysteries. The religious aspect is not overdone and preachy. Just a frank thankfulness to God for his help and guidance through hard times for many of the characters in this novel. No bad language or tasteless sexual innuendos here, but fine and original story telling. Recommended reading for any mystery/suspense fan. To be released in January, 2018.
Excellent storyline keeps you in suspence a real page turner
The View from Rainshadow Bay by Colleen Coble is the introduction to her newest and latest series set in Washington state. With Coble being so established in the Christian romantic suspense genre, I knew what to expect before even starting the novel. Coble does a good job at creating characters who jump from the page and intermingle with the plot.
A good romantic suspense novel with have the same amount of romance and suspense in the story. The romance or the suspense doesn't overshadow the other parts of the story. They both deepened as the story progresses bringing depth to the characters as individuals and as a whole. Coble does a good job at this.
In The View from Rainshadow Bay, Coble invites me into the life of Shauna and Zach. I see their dark moment in their past, which affects who they are as we meet them on the page. Shauna and Zach learn how to move on with their lives and learn to accept love into their heart. Both Shauna and Zach change and transform by the end of the novel into better people, which I really enjoy seeing.
As for the suspense, Coble does a good job at creating conflict that isn't what every other suspense writer has done, she does keep you guessing and surprised when something happens to the character. I finished the book in a day. It was interesting and held my attention.
Overall, The View from Rainshadow Bay by Colleen Coble features transformative characters caught up in moving on from their past hurts and staying alive as the truth from the past comes forward in their lives. I enjoyed this novel and recommend it to fans of Irene Hannon, DiAnn Mills, Dee Henderson, Katy Herman, Christy Barritt, and Brandilyn Collins.
I received a complimentary copy of The View from Rainshadow Bay by Colleen Coble from Thomas Nelson Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for a copy of this book. Not a book I'd normally have chosen to read, I picked it up to give it a go - and couldn't put it down. A great story with lots of good ingredients: friendship, family, romance, thriller, animals. Would highly recommend it. Look forward to finding more boeoks by this author.
This book had me right at the beginning. It was a good easy read. One you do not want to put down. The characters are easy to relate to. The story was very entertaining and I liked the twist and turns. This book was a good page turner. It had good lessons without being preachy.
I would be interested in reading more books from this author
Good mystery and strong characters. Some of the story seemed a bit simplistic - at times things happened a bit too easily or unrealistically, but overall the story was very good. Lots of suspense, good relationship development and interaction between characters, and a love story as well. I have read most of Colleen Coble's books and am always eager for a new one. This book is the start of a new series and I'm eager to read the next book in the Lavender Tides series.
Another Colleen Coble novel that kept me in suspense until the last page! If you enjoy mystery and suspense, look no further than Colleen Coble. She weaves the characters and story line to ensure that you keep guessing and then second guessing.
