Frontier troubles

The story begins in the Arkansas Ozarks in 1860. The MacEnroy brothers come across a burnt cabin, dead bodies and two survivors Lady Emily Stanton and her nephew Ned, hidden in a tunnel in the root cellar. The events go on from here.
There were some amusing parts. Iain's wooing attempts of Emily for one. The 'shagging' discussion was particularly noteable. (I did investigate to see if that word was in use in these times and apparently it was. Check the Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
I liked Iain MacEnroy, I Emily Stanton. There's a batch of interesting secondary characters in this story who stand out. I really liked Mrs. O’Neal and Mabel who was happy to shoot a nasty character if Emily wanted her too.
There's a dastardly cousin Albert hunting down Emily and her nephew Ned. There's a nefarious Bank Manager trying to take the MacEnroy's down, and then the canny lawyer who assists Iain.
The playfulness of the series title referencing Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was truly clever.
I am a huge fan of Hannah Howell's. I adore her Wherlocke and The Murray's series and have read them all.
By comparison, The Scotsman Who Saved Me just doesn't have the same intrigue, suspense and wonderful characters that I expected. Which is sad because I so-o was looking forward to reading this new Howell offering. It could be that I just don't really enjoy historical westerns, even when handsome Scots are part of the scene. This is not my preferred historical genre. Obviously others really enjoyed this novel. So I think I have to put my response down to personal preference.
All in all though, an easy and enjoyable read after my head got around the brogue usage.

The Scotsman Who Saved Me is a story I was a bit nervous about, and I have no clue why because it was really great!! Hannah Howell has always written highlander themed romances so I must not have read the blurb enough before reading this book because I shocked to discover that a highlander romance with a passel of western fun was thrown into the mix. Now this series I can tell will be really fun. Its based on seven brothers, who are all Scots and had to leave Scotland when their parents were killed. They settle in Arkansas and man that was really different. The story, however, starts off pretty intense and dramatic and man I was bawling in the first chapter. So basically what happens is that the brothers with our lead hero Iain, discover a cabin that has been attacked. With a man and a woman being tortured and killed, but signs that there was a child that is missing. So they go in search of the child, and find him with an injured young woman who has been shot and very protective of her three-year-old nephew. They take her to their place to protect her and the child. Emily is in a dangerous situation. Her parents were murdered by a cousin and she and her sister with her sister’s husband went to America to find refuge and safety knowing that they would be next. Now it’s up to her to protect the living heir to a Dukedom, and she refuses to let her three-year-old nephew be murdered because of the greed of one man especially when his parents sacrificed their lives for them.

This was a wonderful and thrilling story and I just couldn’t get enough of this book. Now it’s not one of those books that will keep you up all night, but I was always going back to this book because I was enthralled by the developments of the plot. We also see the differences in views from a Scots perspective and an English perspective. Both Emily and Iain are on opposite sides of the fence. But we also see how much they have in common. How devoted they are to the ones they love and how hard they are willing to work. For being raised an English Lady, Emily adapts to life in America very well actually. And the relationship between the brothers was simply awesome!! I mean they were a riot and so entertaining. They love to tease each other horrible especially when the lead brother is trying to court his woman…yeah they are pretty horrible in their teasing of him, but I just had a blast seeing their closeness and brotherhood.

How they don’t even think twice about protecting a lone woman a child from danger even at the cost of their own lives. (no worries….no one but villains are killed in this book). The romance that develops between Emily and Iain was very charming. Its a slow built up of course. They do have some powerful chemistry from the beginning. But the emotional side to their relationship builds more slowly which I really liked how Howell handled it and seeing the way Iain goes about courting Emily, and Emily doesn’t even realize it most of the time LOL. Which in some ways I didn’t fully understand how she couldn’t see the depth of feeling Iain had for her especially with how they shared their nights together. But we see how distracted she really is, especially in trying to keep calm when her enemies are trying to kill her. Now the villain of the story is really CRAZY. I mean he is really mentally insane, which makes him pretty dangerous.

Overall The Scotsman Who Saved Me was an exciting beginning to a new series that just gets me so excited and book two comes out in December!! 🙂 A thrilling and sensual tale to curl your toes and crave more love in the hills of Arkansas!! BREATHTAKING

I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review. The storyline was a good read and keeps your attention. Emily and Iain are from two different backgrounds but they come together when he, along with his brothers, saves her life along with her nephew. A cousin is trying to murder all who are on his way to inherit a duke's title along with all its wealth, in the end he fails. There is a HEA for Emily and Iain but there is a lot of adventure and danger along the way. This is a good read and I would recommend it.

Book one in a series called Seven Brides for Seven Scotsman. Well this book is sure different from anything else by Hannah that I have read. To begin with it is set in the United States. Arkansas of all places to be exact and the time frame is pretty much just as the Civil War is getting started. Who have a group of seven brothers that originate from Scotland that have settled here making a home for themselves with land that they can actually own (this is where the series name comes from of course). The oldest Iain stumbles across a women hiding with a young boy. She just happens to be injured and falls unconscious for days so he takes them both home. She hides what really happened for awhile but when troubles shows up anyways she has to tell the truth. Instead of kicking her out he decides to protect her instead and what follows is a comical romance that goes in a backwards direction from most though I have to admit he does try. I liked the building of the setting as it was quite detailed telling me how they really live. The addition of the British aristocracy as well as the war details makes for a nicely layered book that will keep the reader interested until the last page. I highly recommend it to fans of historical romance giving it 4/5 stars since I really enjoyed it.

Enjoyable. I felt their interactions a bit awkward and the arrival of the family member a bit predictable. With that being said I did like it very much and hope all the brothers get a story!!

An interesting story along side this romance. A bit different immigration story along with the intrigue of England. Great characters that readers will want a happy ending.

Scotsman Iain MacEnroy and his six brothers are now living in Arkansas where they come across a burning house that brings back to many memories for the seven brothers. Their home in Scotland was burned and they barely escaped alive. Emily and her nephew Neddy are the only survivors of the attack, Iain can tell right away Emily is from England by her high tones bitter accent and at first Iain wants nothing to do with her, but there’s little Neddy to look after. Emily learns who’s after them and she fears for Iain and his brothers. Emily and Ian develop a friendship and feelings deepen. Iain begins to see Emily has a strong women, but he knows Emily and Needy won’t be safe with until the people out to hurt them are handled so they can have their HEA!
This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.

Iain MacEnroy and Emily Stanton were brought together by fate albeit cruel circumstances. In the wilds of 1860 Arkansas Ozarks, Iaian and six brothers discovered the dead bodies of a couple and also found Emily wounded with her 3-year-old nephew Neddy. They took Emily and Neddy home.

The MacEnroys fled Scotland when they were forced out of their home by a member of aristocracy. They managed to re-build their lives in harsh Arkansas.

Emily has all the bearings of a gently-bred lady. The brothers' bitterness towards the gentry was triggered. They didn't trust her in the beginning.

Lady Emily Stanton was lucky to be alive, her sister and brother-in-law were not as fortunate. She's now the guardian of her nephew, the heir to a dukedom in England.

The MacEnroys have protected and saved Emily from her family member who were murdering everyone who has access to the Stanton Dukedom.

Iain and Emily found love with each other after all the life-threatening situations they've gone through.

This is full of Scots in action. The characters are interesting. Emily and Iain elicit just the right amount of steam when they are together.

I received an eGalley arc from the publisher. This is my impartial review.

I admit I love Hannah Howell’s books and this one did not disappoint. Iain recues Emily and her nephew after an attack. He decides to take them to his home but he resents the fact that she is English. Emily is hiding a secret that may endanger Iain’s family. As their attraction grows will Emily tell Iain the truth? Great historical read with plenty of drama, suspense and steam. I loved it!

'The Scotsman Who Saved Me' by Hannah Howell is the First Book in The Series called "Seven Brides for Seven Scotsmen". This is the story of Emily Stanton and Iain MacEnroy.
Emily and her nephew Neddy were left for dead after their family was attacked. Iain and his brother happen upon them and help to save them. Although the brothers feel resentment toward Emily's heritage they feel the need to help her. Iain and Emily end up forming a friendship that leads to a deep love. But Emily and Needy wont be safe with until the people out to hurt them are handled.
Loved their story and can't wait for more books in this series!

Ohhhh, I loved this book! Admittedly, it was a bit irritating at first to find my Scotsmen living (and loving) in America but as the setting was amazingly well done, a perfect blend of Scottishness and, well, the stories of America in the time after the highland clearances.

Yup and that's exactly why we find this bunch of Scots in America as well, but those clearances are not the reason why Emily Stanton and her family found their way to it. In contrast to our Scots, Emily's family as English nobles represents everything Iain MacEnroy and his brothers have learned to hate.
When Emily fled England with her sister and her brother-in-law, she hoped to be able to keep them safe. You can't keep someone safe who doesn't really understand what - or rather who he is fleeing from...

Finding an English noblewoman in the middle of nowhere, wasn't exactly what Iain had planned to do but when he and his brother come across some murdered settlers, they stop by to find out whether there is someone left who needs help. Despite being severely wounded, Emily recovers under the care of Iain's (expanded and rather large) family.
When those that are responsible for the murder of her family come back to finish what they have started, will Iain be able to protect this sassy and courageous woman who has somehow managed to catch his heart?

This is by far not the first book by Hannah Howell that I've read and it definitely won't be the last! I can't wait to find out a bit more about Iain's brothers and of course, there are also some other books of hers left that I haven't read - yet.
I love the atmosphere and the characters in her books as much as the wonderfully plotted stories and the captivating style. "The Scotsman who saved me" is another brilliant example of it and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

What can one say this is a book you can't put down thoroughly enjoyed it. The storyline is great, Iain the eldest of seven brothers, Emily left to fight for her nephew and a wicked cousin out to kill just about everyone and does Hannah know how to mix it all up and make for a great read yes. I do recommend this book and can't wait for the next brother to have his story told...

surprise! the scotsman who save me isn't a highland romance. it doesn't even take place in england. instead it's set on the american frontier. where a group of scottish brothers have set up a virtual fortress that allows them to protect the young woman and child they just saved from a brutally violent attack on their home.

when emily stanton first meets iain macenroy she's so relieved to see a friendly face that she is finally able to pass out from blood loss. holding her in his arms, iain isn't sure how he feels about this english woman who represents everything that forced them to leave scotland behind. he knows she's their social better. he hates that she's one of the gentry but can't keep away either.

all emily feels is guilt that she's wrapped the macenroy family in her troubles. once she realizes that she can trust them with her entire truth she lets them help her. even though she frets the entire time about the added danger they are accepting into their lives by welcoming her into their home. iain wouldn't have it any other way. even as iain struggles with his own prejudices, his heart knows that emily is the one for him. and she is equally smitten.

there were a couple of scenes that were repetitive, but i think i had access to a way early version of the manuscript that still needed some polishing. errors and all, i think this one was a solid story worth reading.

This is only my second time reading this author and finding her writing isn't for me.

A slow and methodical pacing as the story unfolds and characters slowly develop.

The hero Ian and his brothers are returning home when they come upon cabin that is burning and couple that has been murdered. They believe there were others, after burying the couple, they search for them and find the heroine and her nephew. The heroine, Emily was shot and faints.

They take the two into their home and nurse Emily back to health. The brothers try to find out what happened and why. Emily wants to protect her nephew, Neddy, who she believes is in danger. She also fears for Ian and his brothers.

As the story progresses we find Ian comes from Scotland and was thrown off his land (this takes place in Arkansas). We find Emily and Neddy aren't safe and need continued protection. Emily and Ian develop a friendship and feelings deepen. Emily teaches Ian and his brothers to read and write. We learn who's after Neddy. Ian see's a strong and capable woman in Emily and her strength. Ian begins to see a future for them. Emily falls in love with Ian and believes in their HEA.

I have to say the pacing was too slow for me as well as the story line being pretty average/basic. Characters were likable. Just not as engaging a story as I had hoped.

I love this unique story that has a pair of English Aristocracy sisters fleeing to America. One sister, Annabelle had married a Blacksmith, who loved her very much. They had a son named Ned, or Neddy, too precious. Her unmarried sister is Emily, they had all fled England, after their parents had been murdered! Emily, firmly believes it is her male cousin who wants them dead. I can't tell you why, without spoiling the plot. The family is attacked by killers, who have been paid by someone from England. There are a family of seven brothers, whose parents were also killed , by the English Aristocracy, during the Clearances of Scotland! The oldest, most admirable hero is Ian. He has become head of the family, and will do anything to protect his brothers, and anyone else he loves. He ,and his brothers have literally built a fortress around the home they have made, all of it by hand! He is determined to keep them safe! They come across a burned out home, with two dead bodies, they follow some blood until they find Emily, and little Ned, hiding. She is wounded, but ready to kill to protect her nephew! Ian takes them to their home, she needs medical attention, and Need is in shock. I absolutely love this story, yes, there are very minor flaws, however, I truly loved this unique look at immigrants during this time period. I highly recommend Today! Thanks! Enjoy!

I love Ms Howells's books and writing, but I just couldn't finish this book. The writing and feeling of the story seemed stilted and cold. I made it to 27% of the book and the heroine's sister and brother-in-law had been killed, they had given their lives so that Emily could get their son away to safety. There were a few tears but nothing more for their sacrifice. She immediately trusted Ian and his whole family with her nephew that she was so protective over knowing someone was out to kill him. Also, Neddy is 3 years old, born and raised on the frontier, yet has perfect English manners that would be found on someone double his age or older. Ian has a hatred for the English gentry because of what was done to his family and knows Emily is from that grouping due to her accent and manners, so immediately hates Emily as well because she belongs to that sect. Then, out of the blue, starts the kissing and the lusting. I have yet to see or feel any passion or feelings between anyone except glimpses of Neddy's feelings for Emily. I've loved all the other books written by this author, but I couldn't finish this one.
I received an ARC from NetGalley.

The Scotsman Who Saved Me by Hannah Howell
Seven Brides for Seven Scotsmen #1

Well written introduction to a new series in which Scottish men who have immigrated to America will each have the story of how they find their brides told. In this book each brother is met and a bit is told about him but this is the story of the eldest, Iain McEnroy, and the woman he finds to settle down with.

When Iain and some of his brothers come across the owners of a homestead they pass by have been slaughtered they bury them then realize someone may have escaped, been wounded and need help. They search till they find Emily Stanton and her young nephew Neddy and then take them home to tend to Emily’s wounds. Once Emily is better some of her secrets come out, some of Iain’s prejudices are exposed, a romance with wooing ensues and many evil men are dealt with until the person with evil intentions toward Emily and Neddy is firmly and finally dealt with. In spite of the class differences between Iain and Emily they do manage to find common ground and a HEA.

I found this book to be an okay read with a plot similar to many I have read but the characters were enjoyable and entertaining and I did care enough at the end of the book to want to read the next book in the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books-Zebra for the ARC – This is my honest review.

3-4 Stars

If you like a slow paced American western type theme with a damsel in distress heroine someone wants dead complete with some “shooting the bad guys” scenes, you might enjoy this one, folks. Sure, Iain and his large posse of brothers touted guns along with their Scottish brogue, but they felt more like cowboys/farmers than anything else.

Though I liked both of them, I just couldn’t see where the attraction between the main couple at first sprouted from. It felt like they barely knew each other, then Iain was kissing her out of the blue just because, and she let him…apparently just because. If a strong connection between the main couple is missing so is my interest. Emily’s disappointment in Iain not proclaiming words of love during or after their first intimate encounter had me thinking this girl at least soon realized she likely mistakenly put the cart before the horse. You could tell she wanted to take back giving away her virgin body so easily, folks. Good news is they eventually did bond as a couple.

Speaking of Iain. Him mentioning The Trading Post in town, which obviously sold much more than just fabric and food, had me quite concerned for Emily and his health, as well. You see, that is also where there is an attached saloon/brothel he and all the local men went to pay for female companionship by the hour, since women folk were few and far in between. It had me worried about how many ladies of the night he had slept with previously, not that any were flaunted in our faces thankfully.

Even when Iain realizes he needs to woo his girl and not just keep getting smexy with her, I found my interest definitely starting to wane and had to talk myself out of pulling the plug around the 62% mark. However, I pushed on and was rewarded with a steadfast, protective alpha hero who would do anything to keep his woman safe. By then, you could also tell they both had genuine feelings for each other. Unfortunately, the writing at times was not particularly engaging and the storyline felt overly drawn out to the point I fast forwarded through large parts of it. Overall, it was a good storyline but, again, parts of it did not hold my attention.

Here’s to hoping others really enjoy it. Ultimately, it was just an average western read for this NetGalley reviewer.

Title: The Scotsman Who Saved Me, Series: Seven Brides for Seven Scotsman (Book 1), Author: Hannah Howell, Pages: 352, some violence, eventually very steamy, virgin heroine, evil villain, American western theme, no cheating, no love triangle, no OW/OM drama, graphic disturbing opening scene revealed violence and rape of a sub-character, no thought given to possible pregnancy occurring.

Book 1 - The Scotsman Who Saved Me (Iain & Emily), 9/26/17, Pages: 352
Book 2 - When You Love a Scotsman (Abigail & Matthew), 12/26/17, Pages: 352

I enjoyed this book very much. Iain MacEnroy and his family left Scotland for a new life in America. While some of his brothers and he are out, they come across a burned cabin and 2 tortured bodies. They realize this was not a robbery as their jewelry and household items were not taken. After burying the bodies, they start to gather the food and supplies and discover a tunnel. Following the tunnel, they discover an injured woman, Emily, and her young nephew Ned. Iain knows she needs medical care and takes them to his home where his housekeeper/cook can care for Emily.

Iain realizes Emily is not a commoner and is unsure about her. Emily tells him some of her history, but not all. She feels Ned is safe as Iain’s home is really a stockade. While protecting them, Iain falls in love and marries Emily. There is a welcome surprise guest at their wedding. I don’t like to ruin a very good story, so I hope this is enough to entice you to read this wonderful book.

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. Release date is September 26th.
