This romance didn't have an especially romantic feel to it. A strange thing to say, I know, but true. It was just one of many things I didn't like. Some others:

Emily has dropped so many hints about her family's Big Secret that the entire thing has been revealed by the 40% mark.

*MILD SPOILER* She loses her virginity to Iain halfway through the book. Several okay sex scenes come after that, and there's the usual soul-searching (on her part, of course, heroes don't soul search about these things in romance novels), but nothing new or different.

After these two events, the whole second half of the book feels like filler, with sex scenes and wooing and predictable attempted killings just as predictably repelled by the swoony hero.

Perhaps this is a minor point, but it was annoying that Iain's brogue kept slipping into contemporary English; even the ye's were inconsistent.

Although I'm grateful for the opportunity to read The Scotsman, I don't expect to check out Howell's other books.

Again Ms. Howell pens a fast paced riveting Scottish-Western Romance that will blow readers away! - Barb Massabrook (Tartan Book Reviews)

Arkansas Ozarks, 1860

The swoon worthy hero, Iain MacEnroy, is the eldest of seven handsome Scottish brothers. He and his brother’s smell smoke. They knew their was no evidence of Indians, no arrows as Iain felt they were driven away with no sign of the natives returning. Yet there were lawless dangerous scoundrels sneaking about these hills. They did as they pleased and none of it good.

They soon find a simmering cabin with a deceased man and woman's body. They were brutally murdered, both horrifically disfigured, plus the woman had also been raped and the man tortured. This was a brutal murder and it was personal as they didn't rob them leaving their gold wedding bands. Plus the woman had a gold pendant with miniatures of herself, husband and their bairn. There was no evidence of the baby plus Iain was not certain how old the miniatures were. They bury the dead, as that is the Christian and right thing to do. As these are honorable men. They would not allow this unfortunate dead couple be allowed to have their bodies be eaten by the animals or harmed by the elements.

Soon they notice a blood trail that leaves them to find the dead woman's sister Emily Stranton and her three year old nephew Neddy. A beautiful English woman the problem is the english accent reminds him of the hated English and the cruel authority and government back in Scotland. Plus he knew he was beneath her in social status as well. As Emily is the granddaughter of a Duke. Neddy is now the the heir of Duke. Their villainous evil cousin Albert want to kill them both To inherit. He has killed everyone who has tried to protect Emily and her now deceased sister. The reason they came to the new world to hide.

After Emily passes out, Iain makes the decision to bring her to his home to heal, even with his hatred toward nobility. After she begins to heal she proves to Iain she is not some spoiled wealthy noble and can work as hard as any other. As Iain he had an attitude toward the titled as his Laird’s wife treated them like garbage and threw them off their clans land. She being a noblewomen and they being illiterate and uneducated not being able to read or write. A status Emily changes as she teaches them which is such a heartfelt moment.

They soon open their hearts and sparks ignite. To find true love but not without a price. As her evil cousin is upto his evil treachery and wants Emily and Neddy dead! As Iain finally opens his eyes to the woman he has fallen for. Will Iain be able to save them or is it too little too late? Does Iain even initiate a search and rescue attempt? You must read this marvelous book for the answer one I am certain any reader would enjoy!

Another breathtaking, heart tugging emotional read that you can't help but love. As Ms. Howell again delivers another riveting, non stop action story. It is filled with adventure, suspense, mystery, heartbreak, treachery, betrayal, hatred, prejudice, passion and love. Another Hannah Howell novel readers won't be able to put down.

I highly recommend as I absolutely loved The Scotman Who Saved me. The first in Hannah Howell’s brand new series Seven Brides/Seven Scotman.

In the early 80s, I watch a program “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” which was made in 1954. The movie was a musical but that was okay, for I loved that movie.
In 1850, backwoodsman Adam Pontipee comes into a town in the Oregon Territory to search for a bride. Met with ridicule by some locals, he comes upon the local tavern where he meets Milly. Convinced of her worth by the quality of her cooking and her insistence on finishing her chores before she would leave with him, he proposes and she accepts despite knowing each other for only a few hours.

Well, welcome to Hannah Howel take on the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. But in Emily Stanton’s story, her life was anything but cheerful and she certainly didn’t have anything to sing about. On the run with her orphan nephew when her older sister and husband was slaughtered. It was up to her to keep them alive. Until Ian MacEnroy along with his brother come along, to take them under their wings.

Iain MacEnroy has a long standing of protecting those who need it. When his family was run out of Scotland by an Englishwoman, and his mother and father died along the way. It was up to Iain to keep his younger brother safe.

The Scotsman who Saved Me was an excellent book. For a historical romance, you can’t get anything better than intrigue and mayhem. You will fall in love with all the brothers, and just like the movie, this one is classic.

In thanks for being given this ARC, I have promised to give a fair and honest review. A family of Scots brothers with reason to despise the British upper echelons, a widow with 3 children, the survivors of an aristocratic family who were murdered and a mad heir all on the same American soil. All of this makes for an epic tale. That is all i am going to divulge, you will need to read it to see how it all plays out.

The Scotsman Who Saved Me by Hannah Howell

⭐️

I don't think Hannah Howell's writing is for me. This is the second or third title of hers I've tried and couldn't finish.

Based on the blurb, I expected a novel with a lot of action. Instead I got one that was crawling along with very little happening. I was forcing myself to read because there wasn't really anything bringing me back to the book.

The tone was also a bit weird to me. Emily got sick of Iain's constant kissing her and then being cold and so did I.

Not sure if I'll be trying the next book or not.

I really loved the idea of Hannah Howell's The Scotsman Who Saved Me. A transplanted Scot and a transplanted Englishwoman in historical America.

Emily Stanton is left as the sole caretaker for her nephew when her sister and her husband are murdered. It's Scot, Iain MacEnroy who comes upon the wreckage and takes Emily under his wing. Iain, however, doesn't trust her, especially as her background comes into the light.

But what happens when despite your best intentions, you start to fall for someone you shouldn't?

This one started off pretty good. It's a lot of mystery right off the bat, and I really enjoyed watching all of these brothers work together. Emily has a lot against her as well, and I admired her fortitude. I just wasn't feeling the connection between the two mains at all. The story dragged in places, felt choppy in others, and overall, I just wasn't able to give the couple the full consideration they deserve.

Because it wasn't quite to my tastes, I'm just going to say that there's a lot of potential here. I mean seven Scot brothers coming up! I just don't think there's enough interest on my part that I'll continue on with the series. Lovers of historical fiction, however, should definitely give it a try. It might be just what you're looking for.

I received a copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Emily and her nephew Neddy are all that survives after an attack, killing Neddy's parents/Emily's sister and brother in law. They escaped through a tunnel and are currently hiding in a hollowed tree trunk.

Ian and his brothers are returning home when they smell smoke. When they arrive they find the body's of a young couple, Upon their investigation they find the root cellar with the tunnel and see blood. After they bury the body's they follow the trail and find Emily and Neddy and Emily has been shot.

Emily tells Ian and his family whatever she can about the attack which isn't much because she was told to leave with Neddy when the attack started. Ian tells her she and Neddy will come home with him and his brothers, which she doesn't want to do because she doesn't want to answer his questions. She then passes out from her gunshot wound.

Three days later she awakens. She doesn't want to stay there because of the danger to Ian and his brothers but knows she must recover first. She tells Ian about an Uncle trying to Neddy because then he will be heir to the family fortune once her grandfather dies.

Ian and his family were thrown off their land in Scotland by a woman who thought sheep would be more profitable. He is bitter of English gentry. He and his brothers have worked hard for what they have in America.

Then an attack happens, men who are trying to kill Emily and Neddy. Ian and his family save her once again. Ian and Emily have started to develop feelings for one another and Emily is unsure of his feelings toward her. All she knows is how she feels. Ian has no intentions of letting her go.

Can Ian keep her and Neddy safe? Will he manage to stop the man after them? What will Ian's feelings be when he learns just how high Emily's family is in the tier of England?

I have read many, many books by this author and this new series is definitely different from her other books. Many of her stories are set in Midevil Scotland and this one is set in America when people were emigrating to the new country.

Ian and his brothers are such hard working men and then there is Mrs. O'Neal, who takes care of the boys...cooking and cleaning. She was a widow with small children when they took her in, they eventually built her and her kids a cabin of their own and they are now part of the family.

I loved their pride in what they had and what they would build. There is some sexual content in this book but it is not really explicit.

I look forward to the rest of the brothers!

So I was excited to read this book, as i read everything my Hannah Howell. I was a little surprised however when i opened the first page and realized it takes place in Arkansas. I usually don't like historicals that take place in america, but since I really like this author i decided to take a chance. Im glad that i did. It was pretty good, I liked Ian and his brothers a great deal, and really liked the little boy Neddy. Emily was okay, but not my favorite heroine. I like her better by the end of the book. I look forward to reading about the other brothers in the future, and seeing what happens to Ian and Neddy end up in the future.

This was a good start to a new series, it has all the elements needed to make it an exciting and interesting read. It has likable characters combined with an unusual setting and a steamy love story - what's not to like?

Iain MacEnroy is the oldest of the seven MacEnroy brothers, they are a family of displaced Scots that moved to America when their Laird's wife threw them off their land. The incident has given the brothers a deep hatred/distrust for the gentry. They fled to America hoping to start a new life, but on the way to Arkansas Territory, their parents where killed and Iain was left to raise the brothers. Through hard work and sheer determination, they have succeeded in building a home and establishing themselves. Iain meets Emily Stanton when he comes upon her burning home and finds the bodies of her sister and brother in law. They bury the dead and realize that there were others in the house and follow the trail of blood to Emily and her young nephew.

Emily Stanton is on the run for her life and the life of her three year old nephew - she is the granddaughter of a Duke and by an unusual condition bestowed by Queen Elizabeth, the dukedom may be passed the son of daughter, making Neddy (the nephew) the heir to the duke. However, a distant cousin is determined to get rid of Emily and her nephew to ensure he inherits - he has already killed her parents and several other family members that tried to protect Emily and her sister, forcing them to flee England. But it seems that Albert has found them. Emily's sister begged her to take Neddy and run when the attack began, the attack that killed them and left Emily grievously wounded. When Iain finds her, she knows that her family is dead and she has no place to go. When she passes out, Iain makes the decision to take them back to his home, even knowing that she is English.

Emily slowly heals and is grateful to the MacEnroy's, she is not sure what will become of her and Neddy, but she feels safe for the first time in years. Iain knows there is more to Emily's story than she is telling and he is torn between his growing attraction and admiration of her with his distain for the English/gentry. As they grow closer, Iain runs hot and cold with her, but when her life is threaten again, he does not hesitate to protect her.

The story is non-stop from the first page to the last, but it is on the violent side (the villain is relentless) and personally I found the final confrontation with the villain a bit underwhelming. I loved all the characters, the love scenes where steamy, the story flowed well and it focused entirely on Iain and Emily (vs. using this book to set up the series). It is an action-packed, emotional read that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next.

I would happily recommend this book and look forward to reading the other brother's stories.

I loved Iain and Emily's story. The plot seemed a little slow in places and kind of dragged on but the couple was delightful. I lined the extended family and over all a book that will not disappoint.

The book starts off with a gut wrenching chapter that grips you in the story. The characters are intriguing and with mysterious pasts. I liked the romance in between Emily and Iain. My only complaint is that with such a fast paced beginning, the story lost its momentum about sixty percent into the book and became really slow moving and redundant.

* I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review*

Thanks NetGalley for a copy of this book. I did enjoy it. Expected a typical regency romance which it most definitely was not: not set in Scotland or England and the hero was not titled. Made a pleasant change to read something a bit different.

Rated 3.5!

Iain MacEnroy is on his way home when he and his brothers come across a house burning. They stop to give any aid if needed only to discover a couple dead. Realizing the couple had a child, Iain sets off to find the missing boy. Not only does Iain discover the lad, but he also finds his wounded aunt. Iain being the good man he is, takes them both to his home for safekeeping.

Emily Stanton must do everything in her power to protect her nephew, Neddy. Her murderous uncle wants everything Neddy will inherit one day and isn't above killing to get it, as he proved by hiring the men who killed Emily's sister and brother-in-law, Neddy's parents. Emily has no one she can trust until kind and generous Scotsman, Iaian comes to her rescue.

Iain has hated the English ever since his family was burned out of their home and forced to leave it behind. He just wants to help Emily and send her on her way, but when danger strikes at every turn, Iain realizes that he is the only one who can protect her and Neddy. Try as he may, he cannot deny his attraction to Emily. Can Iain let go of the past and have a chance at something more with Emily?!

How can I not like the SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN SCOTSMEN series by author Hannah Howell with it's play on the movie title SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS?! Did I mention that is one of my absolute favorite movies! The series starts of well with eldest brother, Iain's story, THE SCOTSMAN WHO SAVED ME. Iain is a strong-willed man but Emily manages to slip past all his defenses. Is it any wonder a protector like him could fall for a beautiful young woman in need. I loved the adventure and excitement of THE SCOTSMAN WHO SAVED ME. I cannot wait to read the next book in Ms. Howell's latest series.

The first book pof the 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers´starts when the heroine, Emily, runs from the cabing she shares with her sister and her brother-in-law while it's under attack. She's taking her little nephew with her but she could not save his parents. She hides in the woods and has a serious wound she could die for, but fortunately for her and the child, she's rescued by Iain MacEnroy and his brothers who take them to their land and heal her, thus starting a protector & lady in distress kind of love story. Because the child happens to be the heir of a dukedom and someone is not too pleased about him being alive.

Despite both coming form the same part of the world (he's Scottish and she's English) Iain and Emily belong to two entirely different realms. He's the eldest son of a land working family that was thrown out of their home and she is a lady. But in the wild colonial America they are the same, man and woman, both surviving the odds and trying to make a living in the New World. They bump into eachother and although they don't want to like eachother for many reasons, they cannot help falling in love. And this love story is a sweet one, it's not an instant love, it is a slow one. They build their trust first and then they share a few stares, the little boy takes a liking to Iain, which also helps warming her heart, and they finally get toghether until they meet their happily ever after. In the meantime they find some stones on their way, mainly due to the need to protect little Neddy.

What I liked the most about this novel were the characters. The main characters are easy to love, especially Iain, but the side characters are loveable too; Iain's brothers and most especially Mrs O'Neal. Although I loved Emily and Iain's relationship, I loved Iain's relationship with little Neddy even more. That little child, to me, is the best character in the novel, I am not used to having little children being so important in a romance novel, they're usually at the end of them, of course, being the couple's children. But Neddy is likely to be the core of the story, everything that happens is because of him, and he's so sweet and easygoing that the reader cannot help loving him from the very beginning.

All of the above are reasons why I liked this novel so much. However there were a few things that I didn't like, for one, the constant repetition of certain aspects of the plot, or even a scene in the novel which got me confused because I thought there was some mistake with the ebook, perhaps a glitch or something. Emily keeps repeating the reasons why she thought her sister did wrong, or what motivations the man after Neddy had, or that her cousin back in England was an idiot. Also I expected that there would be a plot twist or that something unexpected would change the course of events but no. The man she had suspicions of at the beginning was the man who was guilty, there was no question, no wondering, no other possibilities to it. I would have liked a little bit more of a chanllenge there. But as I said, I liked the story very much.

I am looking forward to reading the next novel of the series!

From first blush, this story takes you into the heart of a beautiful New world or at least the one that these Scottish noble men find when they come to America. At the beginning, you are witness to the attack on a young English woman's family, which leaves her in the helping arms of a stranger. The stranger hears her familiar accent and knows she's from the very place he was trying to escape. With a hint of mystery and the heart of a beautifully written historical novel, this tome begins a series that has the potential for greatness.,

Iain MacEnroy and his brothers stumble across a terrifying scene in the Arkansas Ozarks in 1860. They find a cabin burning with a woman and man dead in the yard. As they continue to search the grounds, they find Emily Stanton and her nephew, Neddy. Iain brings the two to his home and Emily is nursed back to health by Mrs. O'Neal, their housekeeper and neighbor. The same people who killed Emily's sister and her husband continue to track Emily and try to kill Neddy. Iain and Emily are attracted to each other, overcoming their stations in life. I think that this series will be a great addition to historical romance. I really enjoyed the vivid, lovable characters and the sweet story. This is also a wonderful beginning to the new series, "Seven Brides for Seven Scotsmen."

The Scotsman Who Saved Me by Hannah Howell will be available September 26, 2017 by Zebra, an imprint of Kensington Books. An egalley of this book was made available by the publisher in exchange for a honest review.

Whats not to love a clever alpha male Scotsman and a damsel who is cleaver, works hard and doesn't whine. Hannah Howell historical romance books are always crowd pleases.

This book was not my favorite Hannah Howell book--maybe because it was set in the American frontier. Being set in America, I think it loses the wonderful setting of the Scottish Highlands. Iain MacEnroy is definitely a standup guy who has taken care of his seven brothers and built a new life for them all in the Ozarks. When he comes across a burnt out cabin, he finds Emily Stanton and her 3 year old nephew hiding in the woods. Too honorable to leave an injured woman alone, he takes Emily and Neddy to his home. He soon learns why the cabin was destroyed and why her sister and husband murdered. Can he protect Emily and Neddy without endangering his own family?

Ms. Howell is a talented author who knows how to built the heat between the hero and heroine, but I just didn't feel the spark between Iain and Emily. I kept turning the pages hoping to find it and although there is kissing, it didn't move me at all. I guess I like the Scottish Highlanders story better and will stick to those stories by Ms. Howell in the future.

I haven't read much historical romance set on the American frontier so the concept of The Scotsman Who Saved Me intrigued me. Additionally, I enjoyed reading author Hannah Howell's Wherlocke series so I thought I'd start reading her newest series right from the start. However, The Scotsman Who Saved Me did not quite meet my expectations of this author.

Emily and Mrs. O'Neal are strong female characters and Iain and his brothers are very engaging. The overall plot is creative and very different from other historical romance that I have read. However, I found the narrative too repetitive at times, with Emily's oft-repeated description of her fears of Albert (while very real) a bit monotonous and too whiny. I usually finish reading romances within 48 hours but this one took me much longer to get into the story. Nevertheless, the last third of the novel snared my interest and I read it straight through to learn what would happen with Albert's nefarious plans and to discover how Iain and Emily reach their HEA.

All-in-all, I am sufficiently intrigued with the MacEnroy brothers that I would read more books in this series to discover their adventures and their romantic interests.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
