Wow, Scotsmen truly know how to protect the ones that they care for. The property that is described is close to that of an army fort, as far as the procedures that they took to make sure they were safe. Emily is so lucky that it was Iain that came along to save her and her nephew. I can't wait to read the other brothers stories now.
A brutal attack on Emily Stanton’s family has left her for dead . . . until she is found in the woods by a handsome stranger with a thick brogue who vows to protect her. There’s only one problem: As a woman with a noble English background, she has no business keeping company with such a man.
For Scotsman Iain MacEnroy, Emily’s high-tone accent is a bitter reminder of the oppressive regime he left behind. The last thing he needs is to be burdened by the needs of a beautiful, blue-eyed Englishwoman. But taking care of elegant, educated Emily begins to transform Iain in ways he never imagined. Could it be that the deep divisions from the old world no longer apply in the new—and that Iain and Emily can share a passion as lush and wild as the Scottish highlands themselves?
Iain and his brothers find Emily Stanton hiding with her nephew after they first find her sister and husband slaughtered and their house on fire. Emily had been shot so the MacEnroy brothers take them back to their homestead and heal her.
Emily knows that once she’s healed that she should leave as she’s putting the MacEnroy’s in danger but she feels so safe with them – especially with Iain – that she just can’t make herself go. Iain thinks that Emily is the most beautiful woman he’s ever met but when he finds out that she’s English gentry he grows cold. The English gentry are the ones who forced the MacEnroy’s from their home in Scotland and burned it down. He has no love for them and because of this has a hard time trusting Emily. Of course as Iain gets to know Emily he finds that she’s nothing like the woman who forced them to flee their Homeland. As Emily and Iain gets closer as time goes by they find themselves not only fighting for their lives but fighting their attraction to each other as well.
I’m not normally an American Frontier Historical romance lover but this was Hannah Howell so I needed to give it a shot. It was definitely an decent read but not one I absolutely loved.
The story is that Emily and her sister and brother-in-law fled England because their cousin was after them. He wanted the title that would go to Emily and her sister’s sons if they had any. He wanted to make sure that they never had any so that he would eventually inherit the Dukedom– yeah, the guy was nuts. I know you’re wondering about the line of succession in this book. Apparently this wasn’t a Royal Dukedom but one that was bestowed on Emily’s ancestor for some reason. That ancestor had the balls to negotiate about the line of succession and supposedly won so that it didn’t have to be a direct male line. Emily’s nephew or her own son (if there ever was one) could inherit before their cousin would.
Anyway, with Emily, and soon all of the MacEnroy’s fighting to keep Emily and little Neddy alive, tensions were running high. Because of this Iain was forced to look at Emily in a new light and realized she was nothing like the woman who had done his family wrong back in Scotland. When he finally let himself trust and love her he was a changed man. They made a cute couple.
The story itself was interesting but the book dragged in places. While I used to absolutely love Howell’s writing I’m sorry to say that I wasn’t a huge fan of it in this book. In fact, it was quite stilted in the beginning and it was a bit disconcerting. It just didn’t leave me in a good mindset for the rest of the book. Despite not loving the book I’ll probably pick up the next book in the series to see what happens with the next MacEnroy brother.

Iain MacEnroy is The Scotsman Who Saved Me. He and his brothers happen upon a burning cabin and the lifeless bodies of a young couple. While burying the couple they begin to realize there might be a child and search for the child. They locate Emily who has been shot and is hiding a little boy. Taking them home with them begins the fight to protect Emily from her cousin who wants both Emily and little Neddy dead so he can inherit a dukedom.
Iain, his parents and six brothers had been kicked off of their farm by wealthy Scottish land owners and migrated to America. Sadly, their parents passed during the trip. Iain realizes there is nobility in Emily from her speech and manners. He just does not trust her and judges her to be like others in the gentry even while fighting his feelings for her. Emily is so kindhearted and not afraid of work that she eventually wins Iain’s respect and heart.
Not very often is the setting of a romance written during the 1860’s in Arkansas. It added an unusual aspect to the dynamics of the need to hide from the devious cousin and trying to determine how he found them.
This is an action packed romance with a family of handsome men and a small community who all fall in love with Emily. His brothers begin to view her as the sister they never had. Only Iain fights his feelings for Emily for as long as possible. I hope this is a new series that has a book for each other brothers. If Ms. Howell writes them as well as this one, they will be great.
I was drawn to this book because of the location in America. I have not read too many historicals with this setting so thought I would give a try. I really loved the family vibe. Iain and his brothers are great. The story starts out with a bang and everything that can happen does happen. No shrinking violets in this story either – all the women are strong and do what needs to be done. It did lag for me a little bit but overall a nice story.
Good book.
Look forward to more from this author
The story held my attention.
I enjoyed the characters .
After being evicted from their home, Iain MacEnroy and his brothers have established a home in America, only to find themselves faced with the challenges of a new continent. After the discovery of a murdered couple near a burning cabin, Iain soon discovers their child and Emily, the heroine of the novel. She has fled, trying to protect her nephew but it soon becomes apparent that Emily has many secrets that she is trying to hide.
The author confronts the harsh realities of life in this frontier land. She presents the bias held by the English and Scottish, towards each other. However, in doing so she makes this quite a unique story. Both the character of Iain and Emily are well developed as are secondary characters such as Neddy. The backdrop for the story is vividly described, making so such an enjoyable story. I look forward to reading more about all Iain’s brothers!
This is a lovely story of two people of different classes, both who've emigrated to a young America. They came for different reasons, but each because of a need for a fresh beginning. Emily and Iain are involved in an intriguing plot that has a nasty villain and several twists. Luckily, they have several interesting, and colorful characters willing to assist them with their plight. This book has action, romance, humor, and heat. It's terrific! I highly recommend it, and am so hoping this is the beginning of a long series to come.
I received an arc of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
We meet our hero as he and his brothers come across a burning cabin. Seeing the occupants have been murdered they scavenge what supplies they can. Upon discovering a child lived in the home, our hero, Iain, sets out to find him. Knowing what it's like to lose his parents at the hands of thieves, he searches for the missing child only to discover our heroine, injured and hiding in a tree.
Emily, fled the cabin with her nephew, knowing she was leaving her sister and brother-in-law to a grim fate. Emily is grateful to the man who has offered her and her beloved nephew shelter but is reluctant to disclose any personal information as she fears her family were targeted by someone they left behind in England.
Because of injustices Iain and his family suffered at the hands of the English gentry, he is reluctant to trust Emily and desperate to fight his growing attraction. Will Emily share her secrets with the one man who could help her and will Iain overcome his prejudice for a Hea?
You will just have to read the book to find out.
This book is set in the American frontier, while I can not speak to the historical accuracy of this book, its detailed portrayal of life and death is a stark contrast to the romantic ideals often portrayed in Historical settings. The author does not shy away from the stark realities that were a part of life in the early days of the U.S.
The characters are endearing. I especially love Emily, who is not your typical society miss. She is intelligent and unafraid of hard work. Iain, what can I say, I love a Scottish brogue.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves western romances and intrigue.
A brand new series by Hannah Howell gets off to a fantastic beginning with this book.
I've read and loved every one of Hannah Howell's many romances that were set in Scotland. The author takes a slightly, but just as intriguing, path with this new series. The setting is the American Frontier and it is a sure fire attention grabber for this happy reader.
As usual, the characters endeared themselves to me with their strength, bravery, and heart. I loved Iain and Emily and how they prevailed even though the deck was stacked against them. Emily and her nephew barely survived the attack that left the rest of her family dead. Iain and his brothers rescued the pair and took them into their home and then found themselves in serious trouble from a relentless and truly evil enemy. So that wasn't all that they had to overcome either. Iain had a big chip on his shoulder when it came to the English gentry.
I really enjoyed this book and the characters. Hannah Howell always amazes me with her rich characters and lush settings. I was easily intrigued by the other MacEnroy brothers and look forward to reading each of their books.
Read numerous books by Hannah Howell and was disappointed in this one. There were so many important characters and they were well developed. It's just that at several points the book lagged. The topic of combining English, Scottish, and Arkansas history together may have been too much to bite off and at times complicated this novel.
Good start to the series. Enough brothers to make it a lot of good reading ahead.
This book was a great read a really fun and entertaining historical romance!!
When Emily Stanton is put in charge of her little nephew, solely because of the murders of her sister and brother in law, she doesn't know how she is going to protect him. Enter Iain ManEnroy, a man that carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.
A steamy read that had me rooting for Emily and Iain until the end....and I can't wait to read the other MacEnroy brothers stories!
Iain MacEnroy and his 6 brothers have moved across the ocean to start a new life after their family was evicted from their home by a member of the English Gentry and for that alone he harbors a deep resentment to anyone of that class.
Emily Staton, along with her family is on the run and in hiding from one who wants them dead. They come to America to start a new life but when the danger comes to their door she is left alone with only her nephew to protect.
This book was not what I was expecting when I saw the name MacEnroy but as I got into the story I fell in love all over again with them. Watching Iain overcome his deep seated resentment for the upper class and find the love he had been looking for brought lots of smiles and giggles. Emily proved time and time again that she was not the pampered beauty that Iain thought, but h the secrets she hid be the death of them all or would they both learn to trust enough to save each other, when the man that was trying to put an end to Emily shows up at the door.
I would definitely recommend this book the first in the new series -Seven Brides for Seven Scotsmen and can't wait for the next
I enjoyed this read. I found it to keep me captivated and want to learn what happens to the main characters throughout the story. It was somewhat predictable but I enjoyed it none the less.
This novel was a good read, but some parts dragged on a little longer than necessary. There were many characters, some more prominent than others. This novel combines English and Scottish societies, but none of that matters much in Arkansas, where you need to work hard to survive and be profitable.
Scotsman Iain MacEnroy and his brothers come upon a home burning and a couple found dead. The brothers have kind hearts and bury the deceased. However, before that, they discover there is a child and begin searching the area, where they find Emily Stanton and her nephew Neddy.
Emily took Neddy and ran when men sent by her cousin attacked them. Her cousin wants them dead so he can inherit the title. Emily is an English lady, and Iain's family was destroyed by those gentry. He limps Emily with them, but as he gets to know her, he realizes she is unlike the people who hurt his family in Scotland. Emily does not trust Iain right away and only tells him a partial truth, but eventually tells him the full truth after more attacks from her cousin.
As time passes, there attraction to each other blooms. Emily shows that she is capable of hard work, but not the king Iain has done, but he has respect for that. Emily teaches Iain and his brothers how to read and write, since none of them can, which was common for those of lower class. Iain and his brothers protect Emily and Neddy, and even get hurt from it, which has Emily feeling guilty at times since she feels this is her fight. Emily does not quite understand the feelings she has for Iain and Iain does things in reverse when he realizes he wants more from Emily. However, Emily cousin has no intentions of giving up. Will Iain and his brothers be able to keep Emily and Neddy safe or will her cousin be the victor?
good read. i liked the chemistry between the couple. it flowed well and at times lagged but picked back up. all in all great book. didn't feel like I was reading the same story over and over again.
Poor couple. But it is kind of the brothers to bury them with respect.
Claustrophobia was not a good condition to have in the wild at this time, that is for sure.
None of them know how to remove a bullet? It's the frontier!
Such a cute little boy.
So she has sleep apnea, then.
I really like Robbie.
Lucky for Iain she was there to read those papers. Who knows how many people the bank has cheated.
The lawyer should really have a proper office.
Mo' money, mo' problems.
She's confusing sex with love.
Is her uncle or grandfather the duke? I'm confused.
If her sister got hysterical talking to her about sex, I'm guessing it wasn't very good.
Maggie is to be admired. I'm liking Annabel less and less, though.
They are both too softhearted about Albert, although I agree out-and-out killing him would just put them on his scummy level.
I don't think I could eat an animal that I had raised and actually named.
Wow. Welcome to Crazytown, Population: Albert.
A silent door is all well and good in this instance, but what happens if they can't hear an intruder?
Amazing to hear the Civil War described as "the troubles".
Nuala is going to have that man wrapped around her little finger.
